Falling Sky #3

Wind and Chaos: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller

Rate this book
Dangerous storms and monster tornados. A gamble that might ruin everything. A family caught in the middle.

Welcome to Falling Skies. Do you have what it takes to survive?

Six weeks after an asteroid turned America upside down, Caleb Machert is barely hanging on. With a bullet wound to the thigh and a shoulder that might never work again, he’s more liability than hero. If he can’t protect his family, they may not last much longer.

Elizabeth doesn’t know if she’s cut out for this new world. Her daughter is more stone cold killer than teenage girl, her husband is a walking cripple, and she’s never been good at taking charge. But when her daughter is threatened, Elizabeth finds out just how strong she really is.

Lana knows she’s got to be strong; her father is seriously wounded and her mother is, well, soft. When she miscalculates her ability, she puts all their lives at risk. The entire family must come together to escape not only a group of zealous survivors, but the latest round of mother nature’s chaos.

It’s a race against the clock for the Macherts to escape before a super tornado tears them apart.

Wind and Chaos is book three in Falling Skies, a post-apocalyptic thriller series following ordinary people struggling to survive when a meteor strike plunges the United States into chaos.

Left me a little flat

Caleb and his family are together and have Derek going with them as they trek west. But book 2 was not kind to Caleb and he is left injured to the point that he is slowing the family down. They need wheels. Lana has become a badass fighter and convinces Caleb and Liz that she and Derek should reconnoiter a town not too far away for a vehicle. They find a compound of people who have some vehicles and convince dad that Lana and Derek should sneak in a steal a car. Unfortunately, the compound is run by a religious fanatic who fancies himself the new Noha. So, yes the kids get caught and the parents are forced to surrender, or else their daughter would be killed. Unfortunately, Mr. Noha needs a new wife and Lana fits the bill. What follows is another case of being held captive and trying to find a way out.

We find out that Liz had an abusive life as a child at the hands of a religious nutjob. Watching her daughter in a similar peril puts Liz into hyper-protective mom mode (don't come between a mama bear and her cub). There are a few situations in the book that cause Liz to wonder if there may actually be some divine intervention at play.

The book was well-written and action-packed. But it is a very short book. I had just finished a chapter and as I was thinking about what might happen next when I found myself reading the epilog. The book wasn't exactly a cliffhanger but there are many things yet to resolve, not the least of which is the world going to survive all this. Advancement of the US Government sub-plot took place in the epilog (an afterthought to hook us into another book?). We find out a bit more about Lerlaine who took off in book 2 from her abusive husband Roy (who got killed in book 2) but only in the last pages of the book.

This book felt like going to your favorite restaurant for a meal only to discover they cut the portions in half. What you tasted was great but you leave still hungry and thinking you won't come back again. Book 3 left me unsatisfied and if/when book 4 comes out, I may just decide not to come back to read it.

Weaker than its predecessors, but still a good time

I've been loving this series so for (more or less) and this entry is a decent enough contender. It still carries all the traits I've come to appreciate, such as a quick pace and numerous thrilling moments. I particularly liked the character development here too, namely for Elizabeth. Lana is developing more too, except her journey is a bit rougher around the edges. But hey, development is development. Doesn't mean it's gonna always be pretty. I'm glad to see Derek's addition to the core family group and actually sorta wish his narration can be included along with theirs. But alas, that's wishful thinking.

The main reason this book fell short was pretty much my own distaste for the direction it went, plot wise. Our core group has been on the road for a little over a week from Horse Creek base, which has reaped havoc on Caleb's healing process. My memory is fuzzy as to why they opted to leave so soon, especially after the base was no longer a danger to them. Needless to say, the decision ends up being a costly one since the group is forced to make compromising decisions that deliver them into the hands of a new threat that mirrors the previous one, except with religious cultists rather than soldiers. And eh, that just wasn't my cup of tea.

Still, I must reiterate that the character development amidst the meh plot was fantastic. We get some more revelations about Elizabeth's past, and I love how she's coming a bit more into her own. Lana is of course STILL evolving into a little spitfire, but one whose actions have consequences she isn't considering. Fortunately, Derek is a great balance and is often a voice of reason for everyone. Character moments were pretty much my favorite features of this entire book, which is what kept it at the 3-star rating. I just wish it went a different direction.

Anyway, onward!

This was generally a good book, well-written and decently edited, but it felt like a re-tread of Horse Creek except with religious nuts. One minor error was talking about Liz as being Sister Naamah, when she was Rachel (Lana was Naamah). The religious compound was the same formula, slightly different scenario as the military compound in earlier books. There is too much religious overtone with the main characters, especially Liz. I get that in a stressful situation like this apocalyptic asteroid strike and crazy weather, people would cling to some religious faith, but there is too much emphasis on praying and signs. It is dangerous when they start to treat those perceived signs as meaningful and take a course of action based on that. I'm not sure I like the new president, but she has a point that you don't send emissaries to a potentially problematic camp on US soil; you send people with the authority to sort out what is happening and to align it with whatever reasonable goals exist for helping people.

Excellent book in the Series

My only complaint in the last books was that Liz was too weak and her family had to carry the load for her. In this book the mamma bear was awakened when Lana was in danger and Caleb and Derek were not there to protect Liz and Lana. Liz became a warrior to save her daughter and now the entire group is much stronger as they head into the west. I see many battles in their future as the US Government decides to put Martial Law into effect rather than helping communities save as many as they can from the disasters that continue to plague the country after the astroids fell. I look forward to more books in this exciting series

Beginning to lose its way

This 3rd book in the series felt like the overall story began to wander aimlessly. The characters are good but moving from one issue to another without any progression in the overall story made this part of the series a bit disappointing. Will give the next book a chance but am feeling like this could become a series without purpose,.

Wind and Chaos indeed!

Taken by a cult, the Machert family tries to break free and be together. This entry in the series shows the cold strength of Lana, the temporary weakness of Caleb with his injuries and Dereck’s vow to save Lana. Elizabeth gets to show some strength but I’d like to see more from her. On to the next in the series.

Better than #2

I almost didn't continue after volume 2, but volume 3 is stronger. I'll continue for now in the hope that the next volume will provide some insight into the changes and natural recovery of the planet. Another point was that for once the story isn't entirely ignoring the potential problems associated with nuclear power plants whose failsafe systems fail to work.

Good Series

Harley Tate never disappoints. This series has great characters and an interesting story. Characters are believeable and you have enough background for their story. Plot moves along fast, lots of action, with twists and turns. Nothing is easy for the main characters. They are regular people trust into a violent environment.

It is always bad when you venture out

It is not only the disaster to watch out for, but also certain types of people. Americans do not take well to being told what to do by a President or someone who feels like theirs is the on look way. Resist always.

Book 3

This series is hard for me to get through.
It does not make sense that they would have left the bunker with the dad still being a liability of not being able to walk or shot. Get the books and you decide. Then leave your reviews.

Good read

I enjoyed this book, the 3rd in the series. The characters are well written and interesting. I enjoyed books 1 and 2 more. This one is going down the cliché road. Evil preacher, overbearing government starting up. I thought books 1 and 2 were more original.

Great story with understandable characters

Good dystopian tale. Can’t wait to read more in book number four! Things do not seem to be getting better for the characters in spite of what they have had to endure a meteor, acid rain, huge tornados, ash storms, not to mention their fellow man.
