Empty Trains looks at the notion of spaces altering to accommodate changes introduced during the pandemic. While avoiding the pitfalls of Covid poetry, Sandifer-Smith deftly traces the poetics of space into a contemporary setting. Empty Trains does more than offer a frame through which to view such spaces: it challenges us to look at the spaces in which we live, work, and think with fresh eyes.
These poems seem to have nothing to do with lockdown or pandemic etiquette but they do. Fancy a Summer Christmas? The last band before it all went quiet? Arranging to meet friends at a distance in car parks. The weird distortion of life, the odd minimalistic things noticed. The poet winkles out the unusual marvellous and presents it to us in as if we were remembering what we never knew we’d forgotten.
