✄┈ In The Gilded Cage, Kiva finally leaves the brutal prison of Zalindov and enters the royal palace, but freedom isn’t as simple as she imagined. Surrounded by secrets, political tension, and her own conflicted loyalties, Kiva struggles to decide where she truly belongs—between her family and the people she has grown to care about. As hidden truths begin to surface and dangerous plans unfold, Kiva is forced to face choices that could change not only her life, but the fate of the entire kingdom. 🗡️💚
This book made me so angry my blood was literally boiling. 🔥 I started it feeling excited because after the ending of the first book, I thought we were finally going to see Kiva wanting revenge. That twist shocked me and I did NOT expect it, so I jumped straight into this book hoping we would get Kiva’s revenge arc. But… none of that happened. Instead, we got Kiva being hesitant from the first page to the very last page
The middle of the book was honestly very slow. Not much was happening besides a lot of dialogue. I kept waiting for something big, something intense, but most of the time it just felt like the story was dragging.
Kiva is honestly such a pick-me and incredibly stupid character in this book. I genuinely don’t understand how she managed to survive ten years in prison before this. What I noticed the most was how different her personality felt compared to the first book. She keeps convincing herself that certain secrets are “not important,” so it’s fine to tell her siblings. But… they are still secrets that were hidden for a very obvious reason. 😑 And honestly, she might be one of the weakest FMCs I’ve read in a while. Why does she need to be saved every single time? On top of that she’s constantly crying or throwing up every day. By the end of the book, I was just so tired of her.
Jaren… another not-so-bright character in this book. How does he keep casually sharing extremely dangerous secrets with Kiva? He’s the heir to a kingdom—his first responsibility should be protecting his kingdom no matter what. But instead he basically told Kiva everything, just to show how much he trusts her. 😅 And honestly? He didn’t even have a strong presence in this book. It felt like he was just… there.
The relationship between Kiva and Jaren had some cute moments—especially the forehead kisses, which I liked. But I can’t go on praising Jaren and saying “that man” because honestly… he was completely blind. He should have separated his romantic feelings from his responsibilities as a prince. So in my opinion… he kind of deserved what happened to him.
Caldon was honestly better than Jaren in this book. I liked him more. But the big question is: why didn’t he warn his cousin at least? At first I admired him because he seemed like someone who knew everything and was always one step ahead. But in the end… he also turned out to be another foolish character.
As for Zuleeka, it was obvious that she was hiding more than she showed and that she was extremely ruthless. But I have to say… I really liked Torell.
Honestly, the only truly smart person in this entire story is Kiva’s grandmother. 🤷🏻♀️
As for the plot, like I said earlier, the pacing in the middle was slow. I was waiting for a huge plot twist, but the twists we got were mostly predictable or average.
The ending was… harsh, especially for Kiva. She basically goes back to square one. But honestly? That might actually be good for her. Maybe now she’ll finally grow a brain and start using it to make decisions and see the obvious truth right in front of her.
Overall: this book left me frustrated, angry, and disappointed. The slow pacing, the questionable decisions, and especially Kiva’s behavior made this a very exhausting read. But despite all my rage… I’m still curious enough to see what happens next. 😤
