The Walshes #7

Preservation

Rate this book
Riley Walsh doesn’t want a fake girlfriend but he needs one.

It’s the only thing he can do to deal with an ex who doesn’t believe it’s over and years of pining for the most off-limits woman in his world—his sister-in-law.

Alexandra Emmerling can’t catch a break.

She’s left picking up the pieces of her ex’s humiliating lies and manipulations, rendering her reputation in her ultra-competitive surgical residency program seems beyond repair.

A simple arrangement.

Two months. Four dates. Five at the most. But possibly six. Definitely no more than six. Only the appearance of a romantic relationship is required. No other benefits involved in this agreement.

One weekend to unravel the entire plan.

After waking up in bed together—very naked, very hungover—the terms and conditions of their arrangement no longer apply. But that doesn’t mean they’re finished with each other.

This book starts out with page after page of an EXPLICIT sex dream the hero has with his brothers wife (heroine from book #1).

I'm talking explicit sexual detail about his fantasy of fucking, loving, and impregnating her in some illicit affair he dreams about often.

Here's part of his dream with his brothers wife:

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? I mean are you fucking kidding me?!

I don't give a damn that it's just a dream. Why on earth would I ever fucking want to read a romance where the hero has had explicit fantasies of fucking another woman, let alone his brothers wife? Not only that, but of how he would "thrust into her, and the primitive, seed-spreading part of my brain kicked into gear. I wanted to fuck her until she was filled with proof of my possession, and then fuck her again for good measure.”

You know what that means to me? It means whoever is the pathetic loser that ends up with him isn't his first love. Whoever she is and whenever he ends up wanting to "spread his seed" into her, it won't mean shit to me because he's already fantasized about doing that to his brothers wife.

This author has betrayed me for the last time. I'll never touch her books again.

Perfection! 5 huge stars!

Like all other Walsh fans, I have been eagerly anticipating this book, and I am absolutely thrilled because Kate Canterbary has smashed it out of the park! From the moment I picked it up I was sucked into the story, and I loved every moment of it! I was highlighting constantly the whole time I read - the funny, emotional, the sexy, the swoony and the profound (so please excuse my gushy, quote-whorey review). This book was everything that I was hoping for, and I absolutely loved it!

There’s always a fear that comes with reading a long-awaited book about a favourite character in an ongoing book series. Will it live up to expectations? Will this gloriously complex, hilarious and goofy character be strong enough to carry his own book? Will the story do him justice? And I am so relieved and overjoyed to say yes. Yes to all of it! Preservation is a wonderful exploration of all that is Riley Walsh. His humour, his wit, his determination to succeed, his damaged heart and his need for love. Riley, I didn't think I could love you more, but you just completely wrecked me for all other book boyfriends. Sweet, sensitive, funny and romantic... and that filthy mouth! Who knew?

Like his siblings, Riley experienced a traumatic childhood, but unlike most of them he went and did his own thing. His rebellion came in the form of shunning his siblings’ path of attending a prestigious college and then entering the family’s architectural business, instead he went to RISD (spawning his nickname) and living large and loud until returning to the family business and working his ass off to prove himself to his siblings. After being the butt of jokes and familial ribbing, he has made a success of himself, but his love life is heartbreakingly complicated and I’ve been desperate for him to get his happy ending.

Riley’s heroine has been a hotly-debated topic among the Walsh fans, and I’m not going to disclose anything here. I will admit that at the beginning of this book I was sceptical how things were going to work out but as the story progressed, it turned out to be just perfect. She is unique and well-developed, and absolutely perfect for the youngest of the Walsh brothers.

She was straight out of the Tracy Flick and Hermione Granger School for Smarty Pantsing.

He had a Batman tramp stamp, for fuck’s sake. There was no quicker way of announcing one’s man-child status than that.

Very different but wildly attracted to each other, when he and his heroine agree to a fake relationship to help them both out of sticky situations, I was rubbing my hands together in glee at the shenanigans to come. Kate Canterbary writes sensational banter, and she’s done a fantastic job with these two! Funny, smart and sarcastic with just the right amount of flirting and innuendo, every interaction (both in person and over text) is gold.

Riley: I have to ask you something.
Heroine: Shoot…
Riley: Bear with me. I can’t believe that we haven’t discussed this yet so I’m a little nervous.
Heroine: Now I’m nervous.
Riley: You have nothing to worry about. Your life will continue just fine. It’s mine that might come crashing down here.
Riley: How do you feel about comics and superheroes?
Heroine: DC or Marvel?
Heroine: Nevermind, that’s a terrible question. I’d never want to choose. I love the ensembles. The Avengers, the X-Men, the Justice League.
Heroine: But I haven’t read any in 20 years. I’ve caught up with the movies as they’ve been released, though. Most of them have been really good.
Heroine: Are you still with me?
Riley: Yes. Sorry. I just spontaneously orgasmed.
Heroine: What?
Riley: Nothing. But I’ll talk to you later. Something just popped up.

This is a deliciously slow-burning relationship that gradually shifts from unlikely allies to friends to lovers to more, and I loved every moment of it! The pacing is perfect, the sexual tension is sizzling, and the mix of funny, sweet, serious and heartfelt moments is really nicely done. And I really appreciated the lack of game playing. They both have issues and damage from their pasts which has impacted who they are and how they interact with others, but they are honest about what they are feeling, they understand and accept each other and I love the way their relationship progressed.

I liked this girl. Every salty ounce of her. And I didn’t like her because we needed to help each other survive a rocky patch of life. I liked her because I couldn’t know her and not like her. She was fierce as fuck and had more balls than any man I knew, but there was a quietly adorable side to her, too.

He wasn’t an obnoxiously perfect player man-child anymore. He was a man I cared for now, and he was neither player not child.

And though they may have started out as fake-boyfriend-but-also-touchy-feely-friend real feelings grow naturally and organically between them, and they fall beautifully for each other, and I fell right alongside them.

When had it happened? When had stolen all the warm, tender places inside me for herself? And the rough, barbaric ones, too? It was as though she’d wandered into my life, all tiptoes and whispers, and reached in and rearranged my entire existence until it started and stopped with her.
I didn’t know, but I was thankful for it. Hungry to explore it, too.

And HO-LEE HELL. SO. MUCH. HOTNESS!

“We’re going to stop fucking around now, Honeybee,” he said. “I haven’t the patience for it, and it’s not what I want tonight.”

“I’m going to serve you like a queen and fuck you like a whore.”

Like the rest of the men in this series, Riley is a dirty talking sex god, and the steamy time is off the freaking charts! The sex is hot, frequent and dirty with a bit of kink, and in addition to having me fanning myself madly, it shows the connection between them, which soon becomes all-consuming.

“You make me want everything,” I admitted. “Things I don’t even understand.”

But in order for them to move forward, they need to deal with the ghosts of the past, and that’s a painful situation for everyone.

God, I love this relationship. It’s fun, sweet, emotional, sexy and beautifully swoony. Riley shines as a romantic hero and I loved every moment of his journey as he finally figures himself out and discovers true love for the first time, recognising its significance and working to keep it.

“Promise to keep me for always, and I’ll give you everything I have to give, and then I’ll find a way to give you more.”

Swoooooooon!

Of course the rest of the Walsh crew and their partners are a huge part of the story, and I loved catching up with all of them. They are funny, rude and crude, and all over each other’s lives, and their unique brand of snarky banter completely works. I love each of them, and together their dynamic is just sensational.

My family was everything to me. These people were all that I had in this world, and I didn’t know where I’d go or who I’d be without them.

This book was everything I wanted. It’s dramatic and emotional, it had me laughing out loud, and the romance is just gorgeous. I loved losing myself in the Walsh world again, and am thrilled at the hint dropped at the end of the book that there may be more to come. I will be eagerly awaiting anything else that will allow me to get up close and personal with any of these characters.

Absolutely fantastic. 5 huge stars!

Oh my! I am in love with Riley. I mean.... he is that perfect baby boy. When i started listen to the beginning of this book, I resent him so much. I thought this book os goomg to be DNF.

But then it blew me away. How Riley and Alex bonds and start their friendship. The arrangement then the romance. They just so perfect for each other. So perfect. I almost cry listening to their love story. It is super cute.

I am glad I push it through with this book. I really am glad meeting and getting to know Riley. Minus the photos though. This book is full of humor and hope.

The first chapter is a detailed and a very long sex scene between the hero, Riley and his brother's wife, Lauren, who he has had a crush on for a long time.

Towards the end of the chapter, we learn that it was all a dream but he often has this kind of sex dreams and he really wants to have his brother's wife. In his dream, he mentions about his desire to make her pregnant so he could take her for himself.

He also confesses that he has indulged in many Lauren-inspired self-love sessions when he is awake.

*********************************************

Well, unlike some readers, I can deal with a sex scene with another woman in my romance book. Once, I've even dealt with a threesome in a book, which happens after the hero and heroine meet and our heroine is the one who has to send all those women away in the morning. So I am not picky about it, I can deal with it. As long as the rest of the book is good for me, it doesn't bother me much. Hence, my dislike about this whole chapter in this book didn't stem from my dislike about a sex scene with OW.

The reason I couldn't continue reading this book after Chapter 1 was that I couldn't accept the fact that our hero has desired his brother's wife for so long and has had such explicit sex dreams about her all the time.

*********************************************

I read Book 1 in this series, which is Lauren's love story and although I didn't like Lauren much, the hero in that book, Matthew, who is Riley's brother, was just perfect. Matthew is really a hero to die for. Therefore, now, I cannot accept a douchebag of a brother who continuously has "awake and/or asleep" sex dreams about this perfect man's wife. I just can't deal with it. I can never ever like this book's hero and I pity the woman who will come second and be his girlfriend/wife.

There is a small chance I could have dealt with Riley's sex dreams if his brother was a bad man who treated his wife cruelly but nope, they both love each other very much so our hero Riley is the douchebag here. Even then, I would have preferred his interference with his brother's cruelty rather than his sex dreams about Lauren. So, no, there is no way and no situation in which I would feel OK about Riley's sex dreams about his brother's wife.

Well, that's my resentment and reason for not going on reading this book; however, if you are OK with this issue, maybe you should read it and there is a chance you may like the book. I am just informing the readers who may think and feel like me.

Full review in a bit, once I come down from my RISD smutty high. I am STILL fanning myself.

ETA: I did a joint review (mostly a gif-laden conversation) with my blogmates Michelle and Rachel, which you can read here http://www.afterdarkbooklovers.com/20...

Otherwise.....

5 big brass balls, I mean stars

I had high expectations going in for Riley, because he was a favorite for the entire series. I was a little nervous, because when you build something up, it doesn’t always live up to those expectations. No worries here. I adored RISD’s romance and his heroine (who I’m not revealing because this is spoiler-free) is well worth the wait. The humor is on point, the dirty times are extra sucio (dirty in Spanish because ave maria purisima), and most importantly, the writing is smart and heartfelt. If you haven’t read the Walsh series, I can’t recommend it enough. Even if you haven’t, you should read this. It stands on its own...though it could be because Riley’s a tripod. Hey-oh. :D

I have a girl crush on Kate Canterbary.

There, I said it. And I'll say it again. The Walshes are back and it's like welcoming an old friend back into my life. Kate has this remarkable ability to not only draw you into the story, but to make you feel so invested that your emotions grow right a long with the characters. Her ability to make me laugh through my salty ass tears is also unparalleled. She immaculately weaves pop culture through out the story which draws connections and parallels to life. It's remarkably well done. I could not put it down, even for a moment. Invested, party of one.

Why am I telling you about the writing instead of the characters?

Because I went into this book blind. Completely. I mean, I know my Walshes and I was already 75% in love with Riley anyways. But the way this story is told, the way Kate draws you in, the way the anticipation builds. Man, it's worth going in blind. It's worth taking the journey with Kate. She holds out her hand, and man, just grab it and hold on. It's worth every single last moment.

Do I love Riley even more now?

Hell yes. And I love his special someone just as much.

Take the ride. Open your heart. Let Kate lead you. You won't regret it.

(Also — and I don't say this lightly — this book will be extremely hard to beat for my favorite book of 2017. Very, very hard to beat. In fact, I just don't think it will be beat. It's THAT good.)

5+ Honeybee stars!!

Well scratch everything I thought previously as to which Walsh was my favorite. Riley Walsh is the one!! The highlights (especially the naughty ones) in this book are atrocious! So many scenes, quotes and parts that made
Me choke up fighting back the Riley shaped tears. He IS my complete undoing, and DIRTY! Omfg is this man dirty.

To quote one of my friends, “Riley is the Boy Next Door That Will Put You Through a Headboard.”

“Hands on the headboard. Don't you dare move them. As* up, Honeybee. You come when I let you. You understand me? Take it, Aly. F*cking take it. "Ah," Riley purred, the sound nothing more than a vibration against my ear. "There it is."

Riley is so dirty. I love a man that is a take charge Alpha. Riley is that and more, although this quote sums him up the best:

"You're clumsy in the streets but you're a beast in the sheets."

“Alex was strong and capable—she was my Shortstop for a reason—but she was also a woman. Tender and lovely, and deserving of some deference. I wanted to open the door for her, bring her flowers for no reason, kiss her in the middle of the grocery store, buy her soft and delicate things. And I still wanted to f*ck her like a whore.

Kate’s books are more than just steam, but the depth and layers to these stories are golden. These Walsh siblings, and the people they love are my people..forever.

Why did I read this series so fast?! I don't want it to be over! Overall, I loved the series and all of the Walshes for different reasons. I loved how much depth the characters had. Shannon's book, #4, is still my favorite. Because...Will. This one had great moments, and I love Riley. Of course I love Riley, and the humor in the book...but I have issues.

So worth the wait! Riley was everything

So I was a little late to the Walsh clan when I binged read them about a 3 months ago. From book 1, there was something I needed and that something was Riley's book. He pulled at me this whole series and I waited not so impatiently for his story and what a story it was.

Firstly, I won't name the female lead because I'm not supposed to. Just know I loved her.

Secondly, can we talk about how hot my man Riley was between the sheets? Or in the kitchen. Or the couch. Like anywhere. He was so steamy!! I'm not sure I was expecting that but hot damn! I really enjoyed that. (like REALLY).

I loved reading Riley finally finding his spot in his family. He's kind of been the problem child for years and I think he was finally able to come full circle.

Buy the book! Read it! But Riley is mine ;)

'Preservation' by Kate Canterbary is book Seven in "The Walshes" Series. This is the story of Riley and Kate. I have not yet read the other other books in this series so for me this was a standalone book.
This book opens to Riley dreaming of his sister in law and him having sex. We catch on quickly that Riley has strong feelings for her and I wonder at first if this going to play out that they might get together. Because it stays on his feeling for her for a few pages after the books into to his dreams. But Riley does meet Kate and they both have up and coming events and family things that they don't want to attend alone. So they make a deal to attend each other events which total to about 5 events or so and then go their separate ways. But not all plans work so smoothly as they both learn. They each start to have feelings for the other not to mention the hot attraction that is going on!
So can this end well when their time is up...Its a love story after all.
Loved it.

We have loved Riley for his bad timing, his zipper that never stays up, his humor, and his insightful wisdom for 6 books. Now we get to love Riley for how fiercely and completely he can fall for someone.

I love all the Walshes and they just keep getting better. Riley is all grown up now and while he is still the comic book loving Riley he is also successful at his career now. When he meets his special someone, he is cautious but intrigued. What starts out as an arrangement grows to so much more.

This books contains all the witty dialogue and texting that I love in the series along with some very hot and naughty times. I loved every minute of it.

A Shorties Triplet Review by:

Michelle’s Rating 5 #TeamShambles Stars
Ivy’s Rating: 5 Big Brass Balls, I mean stars
Rachel’s Rating: 5 Holy Hotness, Batman! Stars

Michelle: I already know that I’m going to be fighting, scratching, clawing, biting, hair pulling these two for Riley’s affections. Here’s the thing, Riley is enough for all three of us. Right ladies?

Ivy and Rachel: https://media.giphy.com/media/nPKEqfc...

Ivy: Ahem, in the interests of blog harmony...and because *fans self* oh my, it seems that Riley has PLENTY to go around...I will agree.

Rachel: In the spirit of friendship, I will kindly concede to share Riley with the two of you because honestly, this man was TOO MUCH! And I mean that in the very best way possible.

Michelle: So ladies, again, we must make this a spoiler free as possible. Yeah, we can do this! I am going to state also, that although Preservation is a stand-alonish type book, I really think you all need to read the previous six books, especially The Spire, just saying!

Ivy: Well, I think you can dive in. I actually skipped the first book. *shakes off the glares* I know, I know. But it has not affected my enjoyment of this series in the least. Each book can stand on its own as a start to the series, as long as you can adjust to the spoilers you will inevitably get to the books that came before. But seriously, I will get to it because I think this series is worth a re-read.

Rachel: As someone who had only read 3 of the 6 previous books in the Walsh series, I can attest to the fact that this can be read as a standalone and that it did not hinder my enjoyment of this book at all. But, as with all series, in order to get the most out of it I would recommend reading the others ones first. Especially with a series like this one, that deals with all the drama and entanglements of a big family like the Walshes.

Michelle: Before you ask, no, we’re not telling you who Riley’s Special Someone is, but she’s awesomesauce! She is everything that Riley needed and then some. She was no wilting flower, but she had her vulnerable moments too. I really loved Special Someone, serious girl crush.

Ivy: The way she reacted in her first scene in the book?

https://cdn3.whatculture.com/images/2...

Let’s just say I knew I’d get along with her immediately. And damn do her brass balls clang when she walks. I absolutely adore that about her. No spoilers, huh? *blinks* Alright, well let’s just say that she’s moved up into the ranks of my favorite Canterbary heroines, and while Tiel will always have a special place in my heart, the latest and greatest addition has me seriously ladycrushing.

Rachel: One of the things I've noticed about Kate Canterbary’s writing is her ability to write ballsy, smart, in your face heroines who have just enough smart assness to them without being annoying, because she also somehow manages to give them just enough vulnerability to make them relatable and even endearing somehow. Of the books that I've read so far in the Walsh series, Riley’s Special Someone ranks right up there with Erin for me as my favorite, and when I finally read the rest of them I'm not sure that I see that placement changing. Riley is more than a handful and she was his perfect match in every way!

Michelle: Since I have been the one that has read the previous six books *death glares at Ivy and Rachel*, I noticed a huge character growth and development for Riley. Yes, he still spills coffee and leave his pants unzipped, but his maturity level was really captured. Especially when it came to the business aspects of Walsh Associates. Riley, his work was getting noticed.

Ivy: Well, I’ve been here almost as long as you and I love that he doesn’t lose that goofball vibe completely just because it’s his turn to find his HEA. He is still RISD to the core, it’s just that now we get to see so many more sides to him. It catapulted him from someone that I was damn intrigued with to someone I absolutely adore and want to hug….with my mouth. Ok, ok, I wanted to do that before, I ain’t gonna lie.

Rachel: What can I say about Riley except that I love him *dreamy sigh*. In previous books, Riley was a mess, a hot mess, but a mess nonetheless. He was like a big lovable goofy man child that I couldn't help but adore, and he is still had all of those things I loved about him in Preservation, but he was also so much more. In this book, you truly get to see a different side to him and he really comes into his own. There was a confidence to him that I was not expecting, and it was REALLY working for me. A LOT.

Michelle: He is still funny as hell! Wait to read his explanation as to why his pants are always unzipped “Sometimes, I forget” …. “But other times, my cock doesn’t fit in my pants.”

https://media.giphy.com/media/Rl0LGy6...

Ivy: https://images.gr-assets.com/hostedim...

Rachel: ::Too busy swooning::

Michelle: Let’s discuss Riley’s previous obsession, in the form of his SIL. I really needed to understand how and when he had those feelings. I think the girls can agree with me, when I was reading The Spire, Riley broke my heart because he couldn’t really have the girl he thought he wanted. But then Special Someone just steam rolled up into his heart.

Ivy: He deserved no less and I completely understand why she did that. I think Kate Canterbary has a knack for creating really interesting, multi-faceted heroines (and heroes) who have this amazing blend of sharp minds, sharp tongues, and sharp edges with a soft underbelly that they expose to the reader bit by bit. I think it makes them infinitely relatable and believable. These are women I want to hang out and get mani-pedis and margaritas with, any day. And Riley’s woman fits in with them beautifully.

Rachel: is there anything more depressing to read about than unrequited love? I think that was part of what made me love Riley when I read The Spire, watching him struggle and fight his emotions as he loved someone he could never have from afar. It was damn heartbreaking! And you just knew that he had so much love to give if he could ever find someone he could actually share it with. It's what made this story so good and Riley’s Special Someone so special. He had finally found his person, and she's everything I could've wanted for him. Their relationship wasn't rushed, but rather Kate took her time with them and, after knowing what Riley had been through in The Spire, it felt earned.

Michelle: So our Batman … the Keeper of all Secrets, has such a lovely soul. He is the most affectionate of all the Walshes. But … he’s also the dirtiest, and by that I don’t mean he needs a bath (although I wouldn’t mind giving him one, but I’m not going there yet).

Ivy: Why not? I say we go there right now. That man is so sucio (he’s so dirty I need to say it in Spanish), I was seriously clutching my pearls when he got down to business. Just hearing him made me...well…

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqo...

There is definitely a ball theme happening here for me, isn’t there? Hmmm. *shrugs* I’m good with that.

Rachel: I swear I had no idea that Riley had such an alpha side to him. He was everything in this book. EVERYTHING! And when I was done I had an epic size Riley hangover that I may or may not still be recovering from. I think he might be tied with Nick for me (and I love me some Nick).

Michelle: Let’s just say the young Walsh loves and in no particular order hickeys, spankings, ass grabbing and a little choke holding.

Ivy: http://www.sharegif.com/wp-content/up...

Rachel: I mean, who doesn't love a guy who loves to read comics and can also be downright filthy in the bedroom, am I right ladies? He's pretty much my ultimate fantasy man.

Michelle: After seven books (well eight if you count Coastal Elite), Kate Canterbary can do no wrong in my reading world. I have the biggest crush on Author Lady and it’s not going away anytime soon. The mere fact that I finally got to meet her in NY this past April, really made my day. I’m glad she tore up that Temporary Restraining Order on my ass.

Ivy: Brave woman. *ducks as M swats at her*

Rachel: Kate always makes me feel like a bit of psycho when I finish one of these books. Whenever I'm done, I always have the strangest urge to move to Boston so the Walshes can adopt me and we can all be best friends. And I'm from the south! I don't do snow or cold weather. And there's also the small detail of them not being real, hence the psycho part. But this is just a testament to Kate’s ability to write realistic, fleshed out characters who feel like they could be a real family.

Michelle: *glares* As I was saying. The writing is so strong, the one-liners, the texting and don’t get me started on the sexy times. Look, I can go on with this review. Come June 13, 2017, you need to take the day off because Riley is meaty and girthy, just saying.

Ivy: http://i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/o...

*laughs* Our girl Mick. Give her some RISD and she can’t handle it. What she’s trying to say is Preservation is Shorties-approved! Get out there and get your own copy or Riley will smack you down with his ….well, you already know where we’re going with this. It’s dirty, funny, but most of all, romantic-y romance at its finest.

Rachel: Meaty and girthy? Somebody put that in the blurb ASAP. I'm not sure much more needs to be said after that, except go read this book! So you can experience Preservation and Riley in all his meaty, girthy glory!

I'm so close that I can feel it.

Preservation was a bit boring for me. Mostly because it took me forever to get into it. Plus I completely forgot who Riley was and when we actually met him. However, once I read through other reviews for this book I found out that he was from the first book of this series.. which definitely made things a bit awkward (for myself). Sorry Riley? Maybe you should try to be unforgettable?

Anyways, Riley and whatever her name was were cute. I liked getting to know more about Riley.. because, honestly, I needed the refresher. He's a goofball, clumsy, and a smidge unreliable.. but lovable. So it wasn't hard for me to sort of be intrigued by the relationship that was blooming within this book.

However, it seemed a little too late. I feel like with each book from this series I am getting a bit more bored. Then I will be disappointed with something at a super random time.

It was as though she'd wandered into my life, all tiptoes and whispers, and reached in and rearranged my entire existence until it started and stopped with her.

I'm going to try, for once in my life, to keep it short and simple. I loved this book. Loved it. Just as I have come to expect from Kate Canterbary, Preservation was equal parts humorous and heartfelt, a blend of snark, siblings, sass, sex and soul-deep love that touched me so much, so deeply, it actually affected my mood.

And that's the thing about this author, this series, this crazy family—they seem to become so much a part of me when I'm reading, I feel everything. Every longing ache, every regretful mistake, every playful text. I get angry and sad, I want to cuss and drown myself in whiskey. I fall in love and share memories of things good and bad. But mostly, I long to be transported to the Walshes’ Boston, where restoration and preservation and passion reside.

Which is why, for me, Preservation was another smash hit. It took me to Beacon Hill and Wellesley, to taco trucks and bourgeois bars. It made me fall in love with a man in shambles and a someone special who deserves to be the first and only choice. It made me laugh like I do with my siblings and ache like I do at life.

And, it made me happy. This book, with its feels and failings and fauxmance-to-friendship-to-forever, made me nearly giddy. That I know this series, that I love this author, that I waited patiently for RISD to find his someone special, and that I finally, finally know why Batman can't keep his pants zipped.

The one thing I knew to be true was that I needed to be loved all the way through. I wasn't accepting anything less.

~ SEVEN Shortstop STARS ~

NB: Yes, this is the seventh book in a series (which is why SEVEN stars—one for each book leading to this one), but it can be read standalone. Just be prepared to want to head back to the very start when you're finished, so you can get properly acquainted with this family who knock the fun right into dysfunctional.

If you only read the first part of this review, the most important thing you need to know is that Kate Canterbary is one of the best authors of this genre, if not THE best. So go immediately and get and read ALL of her books. She has such a talent in weaving a story that makes you invested in the lives of her characters and not just “watching” from the outside. All of her characters are real and flawed but so relatable and lovable. She makes me want to be a part of this family. I want to move to Boston and to be invited to pedicure night, the farmers' market and holidays and to be included on the group texts.

If you are new to the Walshes, Riley Walsh is the laid back one of his siblings. He's awkward, loyal, quirky, funny, disheveled and a big kid. There are awkward moments, coffee stains on his pants, spilled drinks, nicknames galore, and perpetually unzipped pants. He is trying to find his own way and place in the shadow of his siblings. But he is so much MORE. Once he meets his Someone Special we see the real Riley. He definitely shows his "alpha" side but is also so sweet and adorable while at the same time being hot and sexy. His Someone Special is a strong-willed, spunky, successful and salty woman and I adore her. They are perfect for each other. Their path starts off rocky, is winding and unpredictable, and definitely not easy with many bumps along the way, but it was perfect for them.

If you are as invested in this family as I am, this book will not disappoint. We get to check-in on everyone. We get a little more info on some of the side characters and introduced to some new ones. I can't wait to hear their stories. You still get the same Riley as in the other books, but somehow he becomes so much more lovable and sexy than I thought possible.

This is a standalone book with no cliffhanger. You do not need to read the other books in this series to thoroughly enjoy this book. However, once you read this book you will WANT to read all the others.

When you find the perfect person to be in shambles with...

Sigh.

Kate Canterbary has done it once again. Written an amazing story that has such depth, but still has light and heartfelt moments. It's about love. It's about family. It's about life.

Riley has been the fun man-child since book one, and I think Kate definitely gave him MORE in this story. He had layers which we always knew were there. He had so much heart and so many shambles, but it worked so well. Especially once he found his someone special.

This book is best read after reading books 1-6 of The Walshes series. If you have read the series you know that Riley's someone special is a bit of a guessing game. Kate makes sure finding out who Riley will end up with is fun. Many fans had their picks and I don't think anyone will be disappointed. It's written so well, and all bases feel covered! I ended up LOVING SS! When someone is perfect for you BECAUSE of all their rough edges, yepp... it's just so good. Read it. Since this book holds such mystery I don't have much more to say.

This is a story about family. A story about love. A story about shambles. If that's what you're looking for... Kate Canterbary provided it with Preservation!

3.5 stars. I really liked the first half or so, but the later part of the book got a bit bogged down in too many sex scenes, and I knocked off a half-star. Riley the youngest Walsh brother, who is secretly obsessed with his brother's wife. Alex the talented surgeon, who was taken advantage of in a workplace relationship and is struggling to progress in her career as a result.

They enter a fake relationship which quickly turns into a real one. Two likeable characters, who were lovely together. But the sex thing just got a bit too much for me in this book, although no doubt many readers love that aspect. I didn't mind the But then when .

I did like how the book showed Riley "growing out of" his obsession with Lauren and developing real, grown-up feelings for Alex.

Overall, I still really like this series and this terrific and interesting family that Canterbary has created. I recommend this whole series to CR readers who don't mind some sexy scenes.

Riley Walsh finally gets his turn at a HEA! In true Riley fashion, he runs into Nick and Erin’s house bleeding profusely on evening, urgently needing stitches and a tetanus shot. Enter Alex Emmerling, aka Gastro Girl the gastrointestinal surgeon, aka Nick’s colleague and ex neighbour. She strides into what she thinks is a casual weekend dinner at the Acevedos and ends up performing minor surgery on Riley’s back.

All the way from Underneath It All—Matt and Lauren’s book—Riley has had a crush on someone completely unattainable. No spoilers here, but with this series, there is not much room for cheating ie reading out of order. Something to note, so be warned!

Long story short, after realizing they’re both kind of miserable, Alex and Riley decide to form an arrangement involving fake dating and a “Welcome to Boston” food tour. They will simply turn up as dates to events and their arrangement will solve everything. LOL, if course it will! Best idea ever, you guys!

Anyway I don’t need to tell you how this works out, but it was delightful. I love that the notion of being someone’s “second choice”, but how—truly—NOBODY knows what the fuck they’re talking about when it comes to matters of the heart.

Riley is such a special hero, part bumbling man-child, part insanely talented yet underrated hot architect, part growly sex god, part geeky sweetheart who loves to take care of the women and people in his life.

Alex is a fierce HBIC who is fighting against the terrible double standards at her work. She’s confident and undoubtedly indispensable, but can’t win or get any slack for previously having an affair with an asshole intern. Blatant misogyny in a male dominated workplace much?

Overall, I love how Riley faces his past infatuation and works to make things right with Alex after they fall out. The bond between him and his brothers (and their spouses) are a delight to read. I laugh so much whenever they congregate and bicker. They aren’t perfect in any way but it’s obvious—even after all that they went through as kids—there is still so much love and acceptance amongst them. Great addition to the series!

Riley ❤️❤️❤️ I have a weakness for a dirty talking hero and Riley was fantastic. To be completely honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book after the very beginning but I'm so glad I stuck with it because Riley meets his perfect match and I loved this book. His heroine is strong, intelligent and doesn't take anyone's crap. I adored her. Besides the romance, super steamy scenes, witty banter and superhero references, this book had plenty of time with the other Walsh siblings. I've really enjoyed this series but I think Riley is my favorite. 😍

5 RILEY LOVE IT stars

The much awaited Walsh is here!! I have no idea where to start with this review rather than to say Kate probably saved the best Walsh for last. Another engaging, delightfully witty, romantic, sexy and full of humor book I adored. So Riley has had his share of mess ups the dude and can be unapologetically inappropriate plus of course can be hot too that's what makes him special. Heck he is definitely hijacking the top spot. This may end up long as I have way too much to say and may not even do it justice.

Gosh what a start that was. Ahem. We have seen Riley in stages throughout the books. In each one he is clever, amusing, and quite endearing. No need to sum up the blurb. In order to keep this spoiler free we met Riley's Someone Special or SS as I'd like to call her. I also liked her smart and snappy, sweet and salty (see what I did there?). Even better they fit in their atypical ways and really worked, not that I had any doubt with the author. It's one of those first meetings that leaves an impression ahem. I could probably go on and on how awesome and hot they are with doses of sweet and sexy. Simply put just perfect. They were just everything. I'm completely smitten with all the wonkyness of these two. I love that Riley is not bashful at all honest with whatever he is feeling or on his mind. He has a self deprecating manner in which he hides sometimes too. I loved this passionate side of him and just that all out feeling that the author did well. Seeing how this guy evolved and sorta matured,, seeing him come to his own just makes me happy. I never expected to swoony over him as much as I did but dang son. I also appreciated his PoV cause it was vastly amusing, his way of thought is fascinating.

This unusual not so appropriate arrangement was start of a wonderful thing. It was paced with a delicious burn making the progression more steamy. A more confident guy makes for a stronger relationship, he may stumble along the way but he gets there. He holds in his own now which is always refreshing and much needed for SS. How writer lady incorporated the shenanies and humor in between everything making it all balance, it all works because of that. I really think the idea that things have to fall apart before they can put back together is very apropos here. More solid and stable the next time around. Of course the entire Walsh clan make this even better. I missed everyone and just loved them. Riley's relationship with his people makes me smile. Family sticks together.

As always, fantastic, smart story with sassy characters that just stand out in their own way. Kate Canterbary's writing style is always one I truly enjoy and makes me look forward to each release. The writing is spot on plus the combination of various elements that blend well makes for a great read. It was romantic and hot and sweet as it was heartwarming and fun. It's just sooooo good go forth and grab a bite out of Riley!

5 STARS!

I positively adore Kate Canterbary's writing. I've been a fan of hers since she released the first book in the Walsh series, Underneath it All, and with each successive release in this series, my admiration for this author has grown. Her writing is simply brilliant. It's so smart, witty, descriptive and sharp, and while it is most definitely sexy, it never fails to arouse to the intellectual side of my brain as well. Technically, Preservation can be read as a standalone, but when it comes to this hero especially, I highly recommend that all of the previous books be read and that you do so in order.

"What we're talking about here... it's preservation. I need it as much as you do."

Preservation is the seventh book in the Walsh family series, and it is one I've been waiting anxiously to get my hands on. Canterbary's readers have gotten to know and grown to love the awkward, often bumbling youngest member of the Walsh clan, Riley 'RISD' Walsh, through the previous six books. I truly thought I knew this character, too, but it wasn't until I dove into this book that I realized Kate had barely scratched the surface in those books of this complex, interesting, surprisingly smart and devilishly sexy character.

"This is how I see you... Beautiful and filthy and mine."

I'm going to be purposefully vague about the heroine because her identity is a spoiler. I will say, simply, that she is exactly what this complicated, lonely but overwhelmingly, astonishingly passionate man needs--and he is all of that for her as well. Their relationship may have started out as one wild and decidedly fake weekend, but it didn't take long for it to become the most real thing in these two characters' lives.

"It was as though she'd wandered into my life, all tiptoes and whispers, and reached in and rearranged my entire existence until it started and stopped with her.

Canterbary develops this relationship slowly, richly, and I was held captive by this story, tapping my Kindle screen furiously in my consumption of this couples' sometimes light and easy, sometimes painful and difficult but always searingly passionate journey to happily ever after. The tongue-in-cheek, New England wit is abundant here, but it was the immense chemistry, intense and crackling in the air, sometimes jolting me with it's boldness, that made this story one I could not put down. Shockingly sexy, Riley Walsh took me by surprise in the most delicious of ways.

"...the reality of you is far better than any idea I've ever had."

A fabulous addition to the not-to-be-missed Walsh series, Canterbary's Preservation caps off a series where I've looked forward to, waited happily for, devoured and loved each book more than the last. That's rare, that's special and that's why this will always be a series and an author whose work I not only have no hesitation in recommending, but I do so proudly and confidently.

So the world should know by now that Kate Canterbary and her novels rock my world. It's a given. I drop everything for her novels because she is just that incredible. She writes what she writes and honestly we may slowly die because we want it so bad but like the smooth dealer she is...she gives us that good-ish and that perfect high each and every time. It's the golden kindle crack. There really is no one else like her. Her novels are filled with snark, sass, wit and banter and they leave a lasting impression on your brain and your heart.

It's really hard for me to even think that Riley's book is the last one as the Walsh Series is my favorite series in the entire world. NOTHING Compares. These books are my go to rereads as they are pure comfort food for the soul. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Canterbary has a remarkable gift in that she can paint a picture for her readers with a myriad of colors not only highlighting her exceptional ability as a writer but also highlighting her seamless ability to weave this WHOLE series together to create this huge story with so many facets. Each character plays their own integral part in the saga that is the Walsh Family. This series is just so exceptional and frankly one of the best, well-written series I have ever read.

In this book, we finally get to see Riley Walsh fall and meet his Someone Special. If you've followed this series over the years you know all about Riley. Among his many traits, he is funny, quirky, sarcastic af, clumsy and the best secret keeper around. But most don't know that he's carried a torch for the most unavailable woman EVER. This secret begins to eat away at him and his soul and run him ragged. Enter his Honeybee aka his Someone Special. They meet and it's all chemistry, friendship and laughs and an arrangement  of mutual benefit is born. But what happens when lines are crossed and feelings arise and what he once thought true was nothing in comparison to what he feels now?

Gahhh. This book equally destroyed and healed me. Riley Walsh is the most amazing imperfect man and I could not love him more. This story had so much passion and snark and true to Ms. Canterbary's style, the banter was out of this world amazing. I absolutely loved every second of this novel and look forward to her next one! Bravo!

Where do I begin?

Do I start with the characters? I could. The narration? I could do that, too. The love of this family? Hell, yeah.

I'll start with Riley, we met him way back in the throes of Underneath It All. We laughed as we buckled up for the ride that was this family. Crazy, lovable, making sure a frying pan was ready for anyone's side of the head, copious amounts of whiskey and coffee.

He's RISD. He's always walking in at awkward sexual moments, getting hurt, leaving his zipper down, but he's got a heart of gold. He deserves to happy. We've waited, calming our tits, stealing all the morsels we could from this remarkable guy.

Enter Someone Special. She's ballsy, brilliant and challenges Riley to be the man she's knows he can be. She's his person, unexpected as it may be. It's the best kind of love. She and Riley banter, I was about to pee my pants. It's just so funny. And you come away from this book thinking, yes - that's the kind love everybody wants. You feel it in your bones.

The Walsh family members are never far away. I wouldn't want them to be. They have just as much right to be in this story.

The dual POV works seamlessly just like in every other Walsh book. You get inside this family's head. You know them, you fight for them, you laugh at the good times and cuddle them when the times go low.

Kate Canterbary is a unicorn. She's rare talent, seven Walsh.... that's right .... SEVEN. 1-2-3-4-5-6 before it and you know what, just when you thought her writing, her wit, her love of this family couldn't be any larger than life, she blows it right open, like everything you thought you knew what a book could be. Every word, every agonizing word, is meant to be on that page. Never doubt. Trust her. Go on, don't be afraid, okay be afraid a little bit.

Sometimes people influence you not so much by what they mean to you - as  by what they allow you to mean to them. - Gotham Knights

RISD! RISD! RISD! RISD!

I am in deep with the Walsh siblings. So deep. I am a diehard fan of their complicated but loving family. If I had to pick a favorite Walsh though, it would have been Shannon with RISD/Riley a very close second. For the past six books, Riley has brought the funny, bestowed perfect nicknames, kept secrets for all of his siblings, and just been the quintessential lovable kid brother. But you guys, Riley has been holding out on us. Big time!

Riley has come into his own since Book 1. Yes, he is still funny and spilling things left and right but he is so much more. He is so good at his job! And so thoughtful. And he loves so hard. His chemistry with "No Spoilers Here" (NSH) is off the charts. Their banter and the growth of their relationship is absolutely stellar. Their text messages give Shannon and Will's a run for their money. I could read a book of nothing but their text messages and be so happy. So, so, so happy.

Oh, and just in case you have ever wondered over the past six books whether funny, accident-prone RISD could get it, let me tell you that RISD can definitely get it. Holy shit, can RISD get it. You're welcome.

So if you're keeping track, Riley is now my #1 Walsh sibling. And NSH, who is awesome, loves red, and takes no shit from anyone, is my #2 Walsh love interest because, Will will always be my #1 Walsh-in-law. Sorry, it just had to be said. Again.

P.S. This is my official request for another Riley/NSH book. If Sam and Tiel (ugh, stop trying to make Tiel happen!) can get a second book, then Riley and NSH can get the double feature. And Shannon and Will for that matter too. More Walsh books and early Monday morning meetings for everyone! Pleeeeeaaazzzzzzzz

Sincerely , this IS my favorite book of the series. Not because it was the last one. Not because I fell deeper in love with Kate Canterbary’s storytelling. Nope, it’s because she saved the most complicated and emotional story for The End .

Riley is the goofy younger brother. The light in the dark moments. The eye roll when serious words are said. Consistently the Lou Costello to the entire family of Bud Abbotts. But lingering in the background, the reader knows there is more to RISD than unzipped flies and coffee stains. Ms. Canterbary does more than deliver. This is the PERFECT story delivery that you didn’t even know you wanted. You’ll have eye opening experiences with flashbacks to the previous POVs with delightful clarity.

And I haven’t mentioned the heroine. Let’s just say, you know it would take someone special. Someone who could meet Batman every step into a Happily Ever After. She is definitely found in this story.

Let me end with if you’ve read every single review for the Walsh series I’ve written, I saw repeatedly I’ve stated to read in order and read them all. To truly appreciate Riley’s story it is imperative this happens. Otherwise you are short changing yourself. If I could give this book 10 stars I would. It was every emotion laced together. Often readers are sad to see a series end, but what I send off Ms. Canterbary gave us. 5 out of 5 stars.

Riley, Riley, Riley....I don't even know where to start!! I guess we'll just start with the obvious! Once again Kate Canterbury has written a delectable, witty, romantic, sexy, entertaining book. She just keeps outdoing herself! I've been waiting on Riley for a while. I had an inkling that he was going to be my favorite Walsh (he shares #1 with Nick😉) and I was right. This was an interesting book because we already knew so much about Riley. From page 1, we hit the ground running. We knew him, now all we needed were the gritty details and boy does Kate deliver on those! To keep this review spoiler free, when I say Riley, just know that I am talking about him and his someone special. They are hot, romantic, sweet, caring, sexy, hot...oops did I already say that??? It's been said in a previous book that Riley is the emotional Walsh, not afraid of showing his feelings through words or actions. As his relationship unfolds, this fact is proven time and time again. We also get to see how strong Riley has become. He's changed so much since we first met him. He has confidence in himself, in his work, and when he talks the other Walshes listen. Riley came into his own and he has the perfect match to live happily ever after with❤️! Thank you Kate! You never disappoint and I love me some Walshes!!!

Okay, admittedly I have been reading The Walshes out of order (whoops). And Riley is a character that I was immediately drawn to, so I had to read his story. And gah - that opening chapter was *gasps* - not sure what I expected going in.

BUT...I loved Riley and Alex so much. Their chemistry was palpable from the moment both of them were on the page. I immediately wanted them to end up together. And then, Kate Canterbary chooses to give us fake dating + friends to lovers for their tropes! Immediately I'm a goner in this type of situation.

Slowly this fake dating situation starts to feel really real. But both Alex and Riley have pasts that aren't quite what they seem. Will they be able to move on to make their relationship something tangible?

I LOVED this book so much. The vulnerability in both characters got me. I was shedding tears on behalf of both Riley and Alex. I wanted nothing more for these two to get their happy ending, but gah was it filled with so much heartache and angst.

I can't wait to go back and read more of this series! If you love an angsty, swoony romance - I highly recommend Preservation. And while it might be better to read this series in order, I totally read this as a standalone and it worked out fine for me!
