" Surfacing is a different kind of thriller about secrets within secrets. Readers who enjoy a smokescreen of conspiracy theories underlaid by real political events may become so engrossed they forget to come up for air ."

"It's hard to know which was more enjoyable; the heart-pounding action or the complex characters. Either way, this a novel on its way to the top."

An Aging Veteran, a Rookie, and Clandestine Intrigue
It's hard to know which was more enjoyable; the heart-pounding action or the complex characters. Either way, this a novel on its way to the top.

Teddy is a sniper assigned to an elite and highly secretive division of the U.S. government. They operate in the shadows due to the controversial nature of their mission. The innocuously named Teddy has been with the division from the beginning. He's now feeling his age and mileage, but he's just too good a sniper to retire yet.

Teddy prefers to work alone, but his boss wants him to have a partner and brings Avery, a young woman going through Ranger school, onboard.

Avery wasn't sure at all why she had boarded this stranger's plane. Whether it was to fulfill her sense of duty to her country or take an opportunity her father was never granted, it was twenty thousand feet too late to turn back now.

Teddy and Avery could not be more divergent. Teddy does the job he's handed quietly and efficiently. Avery questions everything and has no problem deviating from plans if she thinks there's a better way. Teddy's the best there is with a sniper rifle. Avery might have been plucked from Ranger training, but she's a terrible shot, and she knows it.

Teddy is able to retain single focus, as though he's looked through a sniper's scope so long, he's used to only seeing part of the action. Avery has to know the entire picture and tends to fixate on areas that are outside her purview and her ability to control. To say these two don't just gel into a cohesive team is an understatement.

"Both sides go to war, war fuels the machine, the machine makes money," Teddy chimed in, staring across the table at Avery.
"I'm aware how war profiting works, but thank you for dazzling me with the basics," Avery retorted quickly. Her sarcasm had oddly earned her a point or two in Teddy's book right away.

The author has created two remarkable characters in Teddy and Avery. Their temperaments and personalities may be different, but there are common areas for them. Like traumatic backgrounds, and deep scars they keep to themselves. Individually, they're pretty interesting. Working together, they're fascinating.

As previously mentioned, the plot is intense. It's got a great pace, starting at the speed of NASCAR and building to the speed of sound, complete with sonic boom. This is definitely a novel I could not put down. There is so much going on and such energy that I actually felt like I would miss something if I closed the book.
