I’ve been in love with my best friend since high school. My biggest regret? Walking away without telling her. I planned to. But then catastrophe struck, making us part ways without a word. She left for Boston with her fiancé, while I left for L.A. with my band–Raging Chaos. For the next five years, I lived and breathed music, trying to forget the beautiful girl who shattered my heart without even knowing it. Until I see her again… I walked away once, and I've learned my lesson. Layla is my forever, not another item in my pile of regrets. And she's about to find that out.

The moment I saw Camden on stage, something inside me came to life. His tragic song of unrequited love was a confession that had me questioning everything. Five years might’ve changed who we are—he’s a rock star and I’m a single mom—but my feelings for him are as strong as ever. His lyrics make falling in love seem easy. For him—maybe it is. Only I’ve learned the hard way that real life isn’t as simple as writing a love song.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Like real life, the characters are far from perfect, make morally gray decisions, and deal with subjects that may be sensitive for some readers. If you are looking for a safe romance, this series is not for you. Trigger warnings (which contain spoilers) can be found on my website.
Nikki Ash resides in South Florida where she is an English teacher and mom by day and a writer by night. When she’s not writing, you can find her with a book in her hand. From the Boxcar Children to Wuthering Heights to the latest Single Parent Romance, she has lived and breathed every type of book.

While reading and writing are her passions, her two children are her entire world. You can probably find them at a Disney park before you would find them at home on the weekends!

What an angsty and emotional beginning to the Love and Lyrics series and an epic introduction to the intriguing musicians of Raging Chaos!. Nikki Ash always so deftly combines the impact of darkness and trauma with the tender sweetness of powerful, but gentle, true love. And Controlled Chaos is such a perfect encapsulation of that dynamic- we have heartbreak and pain, chaos and turbulence, paired with a swoony love story between two best friends that spans ages.
Fans of Nikki’s will remember Camden as the surprise baby of Sophia and Easton from A Chance Encounter. We reconnect with him as a teen, falling hopelessly in love with his best friend and neighbor Layla, longing for her from afar during their teenage years. But tragedy, bad decisions, and poor timing disrupt these two from ever exploring more. Now an adult and lead singer of a best selling band, Easton channels his unrequited feelings into his music, after growing distant from his one true love. But tragedy and fate call them together this time, and Layla hasn’t quite been living her dream like Camden.
I love the friends to lovers dynamic, and Nikki captures it so effortlessly while giving it the second chance treatment. The ease of loving someone, the natural progression of the chemistry, the permanence of the connection, all juxtaposed to the confusing feelings and the fear of harming a relationship that is special, a source of stability and safety that all of a sudden has risk. Camden is our classic Nikki hero- rough around the edges, a bit alpha, but also epically swoony. A dirty talking swooner who isn’t scared to be vulnerable and open, who loves with his whole heart and sweeps you off your feet. HIs rockstar status hasn’t changed him, unlike his other friends who clearly have their own stories to tell. And his love for Layla is so precious and patient. Poor sweet Layla broke my heart- heed the trigger warnings. I felt for her so deeply, her need to be loved, her need to believe in others. She’s a bit broken, but I love that it doesn’t keep her from investing her heart in a man she knows will protect it. And she’s such an adorable mother- Felix stole the show.
We definitely have some dark elements and painful parts of this story, but as always, Nikki focuses on showing us the power of TRUE and supportive partnership. How heartbreak and pain and challenge don’t rip apart a couple but rather makes them more steady and true, more stable in their own love, even if the world around them is crumbling. Because love is controlled chaos- with the right person. The chaos that lifts you, rather than breaks you.
I can’t wait for more from the band- this series is going to HURT, because these guys have some baggage, and given the introduction we got to them as teens and what has propelled them to where they are now, I know we have A LOT to uncover. Can’t wait for more!
What a journey to forever! Controlled Chaos is the first book in Nikki Ash's new series, Love & Lyrics and is a standalone. It is told in first person, from dual perspective. I was super excited for this book because the hero, Camden, is the son of Sophia and Easton from Nikki's book A Chance Encounter! Camden and Layla do not have an easy journey, so if you're a sensitive reader you may want to check out the trigger warnings. I have them listed in my GR's bookshelf tags.
Camden fell in love with Layla the moment he met her when she moved next door in 10th grade, but she had a boyfriend, so he was willing to bide his time. Biding time turned into never as obstacle after obstacle got in his way and eventually they went their separate ways. Her, off to college and later married and Camden off to fulfill his dreams of becoming a rock star. But Layla is back in town and when she hears Camden singing his song of unrequited love and recognizes herself in the lyrics, she is completely blown away and an impulsive decision will lead to horribly dire consequences in a marriage that is already broken.
Good lord! What an emotional roller coaster ride! The story is well written and moves quickly. The characters are just wonderful. Layla is amazingly strong and shows true courage for both her and her son. Camden is just wonderful and everything we would expect as Easton's offspring, lol: considerate, sweet, tender, and just a wee bit obsessive about Layla and her son. Once Layla's eyes are open regarding Camden, the interactions between them are intense and the chemistry off the charts. Camden and Layla will have a difficult journey to their happy ever after, but it's definitely worth it! Just a wonderful read that I'd definitely recommend!
Controlled Chaos is the first book in the author’s new rockstar romance series, and it started with a five star bang for me! She warned us it would be an emotional read, and she delivered! This book is a best friends-to-lovers, second chance romance between Camden and Layla. Camden and Layla became neighbors and best friends in high school. Camden fell in love with Layla, but has not revealed his feelings. Before he can, Layla is engaged to another guy she dated at the school, and a tragedy amongst their friend group drives them in separate directions for the next five years.
Fast forward and Camden and his band, Raging Chaos are at the top of the charts and Layla has a son and is in an abusive marriage that eventually explodes. Ultimately, Camden and Layla get another chance to explore the connection that always existed between them from the moment they met.
Layla was a strong heroine. It takes a lot to endure, survive and escape an abusive marriage, especially when there is a kid involved. It hurt my heart to see what Layla went through and I’m glad she was able to escape and experience what real love and respect is from a man. Camden was incredibly patient with Layla, and was so sweet with her son, Felix. I love a good pining hero and that’s what Camden was waiting for his one true love to find her way back to him❤️.
Also the songwriting?! I almost wish the songs Camden wrote were real because the lyrics were so powerful! I loved the musician side of it all, especially since Camden’s bandmates will be getting their own books in the series!
Highly recommend if you love a single mom, second chance romance that will give you all the feels and a well-deserved HEA!
TROPES: single mom; second chance; friends to lovers; rockstar/musician H
I like seeing how Camden "Cam" Blackwood and Layla "Shutterbug" Higgins first meet as they're about to start their sophomore year of high school. I love how they initially communicate through music. Watching their relationship grow and change for the next few years is bittersweet. It is a great segue for what's to come.
Them coming together years later starts organically and builds appropriately. I really like them as a couple. Four-year-old Felix makes things a bit more entertaining.
"I just got you. The last thing I want is for you to run scared." -- Cam Blackwood
There are several heartbreaking and WTF moments, including sexual assault, death, and more. Cam's reaction to certain events is endearing and exactly what I expected. The tenderness and care he repeatedly shows Layla proves what a wonderful man he is. ❤️🩹 The way he is with Felix is exactly how any parent, step or otherwise, should be.
I listened to this as part of the Love & Lyrics audio boxset. The narrators are Marina Barrett and Walker Williams. Both are new to me, and I really liked both.
Camden and Layla had it all. All the gut wrenching heartbreak, the angst, the swooning and wooing, the chemistry, and the cutest little boy ever. All the things that Nikki Ash consistently delivers. This was a great beginning to this series and I cannot wait to see where the rest of the boys of Raging Chaos take us.
There are triggers though that should be heeded. Please check the author's website or dm me for them as it is a doozy. Not a trigger of mine but it was hard to read. But like Ash says, this series will be real and raw and that is most definitely what we got in Controlled Chaos.
Controlled Chaos is the perfect start to the Love & Lyrics series! (If you have read A Chance Encounter (Easton & Sophia) Camden is their son.) It does come with trigger warnings and you can find them on Nikki Ash’s website. Their story is told in first person with dual pov.
Camden and Layla’s story had me invested from page one. The kind where you want to read faster to find out what happens next and then also go slower so the story never ends. Their story is messy, angsty, and emotional and I loved every second of it.
If you enjoy single mom’s and rockstars I definitely recommend you read this one!
Twisted childhood-friends-to-lovers Rockstar romance. Kaylee and Camden meet when Kaylee moves in next door. Camden instantly harbors feelings for her but ends up never really expressing how he feels until it’s too late. In a series of unfortunate events, they end up separating for 5 years until Kaylee ends up back in his life. What happens next is a slow burn reconciliation for these two star crossed lovers.
Although I found some events over-exaggerated and a bit unrealistic, it was refreshing that both characters were very forthcoming with their feelings instead of beating around the bush and causing more miscommunication. Each time I thought the conversation would lead to unnecessary drama, they power through the conflict. This allowed the plot to be driven more by situational drama and rivalry, all stemming from an antagonist character.
Overall an enjoyable read for my first book by this author! 4 STARS
Trigger Warning - yes. Check out author’s website.
I recently read A Chance Encounter by Nikki so it was fresh in my head and I remember Easton an Sophia’s story so it was nice to be back in that world and get their sons story this time.
It was really insane how 13% into the book the whole world imploded so much tragedy occurred. Suicide and I knew before I even read the trigger spoilers for the remainder of the series via Nikki’s website that Kaylee was NOT cheating but either was drunk and being taken advantage of or drugged and from the trigger warning it seems like she was drugged.
David was a mess - a total fucking mess. I hated him. He was a walking taking red flag. He was obsessive and yet had the audacity to cheat on her for so long and lie about it to his mistress. He really needed a wake up call and thankfully it’s gonna be waking up everyday in prison.
Camden was such a lovable guy. He truly loved Layla and I enjoyed their friendship and eventually their romantic relationship. I just wish they hadn’t missed out on all those years.
Again seeing the trigger warning spoilers for the remaining books tells me who’s book is next:
Braxton x Kaylee = Silent Chaos (and I think this is the one I am going to mostly love as it’s a second chance romance and he better grovel despite truly everyone thinking she cheated)
Declan x Kendall (Camdens older sister) = Total Chaos (he has been pining for her for ages and she is a hopeless romantic so should be fun)
Gage x IDK = Bleeding Chaos (his story will hurt after losing Tori so young and by suicide. I wonder who will he end up with and how bad is his drug abuse)

I tried. I really tried. But this book feels as if it was written by a toddler. And I had really high hopes for this because it was a BookTok recommendation.
The way it is written is like reading steps in a manual.
John Doe went to the market. John Doe hates the market. John Doe has beautiful hair. John Doe doesn’t care.
And it’s constant. There’s no angst here, there’s nothing to really keep you reading except when you’ve made it halfway through the book hoping for a climax that doesn’t come because it’s so quickly done.
There’s no emotional connection to these characters and I don’t feel like there’s any reason to continue with the series. I believe the series is to be a total of 4-5 books. I won’t even be reading the 2nd to continue the story, because the author doesn’t give you any reason to care about the other characters except minimizing the issues.
Controlled Chaos is the first book in the Love and Lyrics series of inter connected standalones. This is a friends to lovers second chance romance and be prepared it is emotional.
From the moment Layla moved next door to Camden in high school they became best friends. This felt like a sliding doors moment as just when he was going to take his chance everything for this group of friends fell apart. When they are reunited years later so much has changed in their lives, Camden is part of successful rock band Raging Chaos and Layla is married with the sweetest little boy Felix.
I liked that it felt like no time had passed when they reconnected, the love and affection was so apparent. I won't go into the details of Layla's life but boy does Camden step up when needed. The way he is willing to take on anyone to protect her and little Felix and to take his shot had me swooning. I understood her reasoning but sometimes I wanted Layla to metaphorically stamp her feet and scream and shout. This is a book that left my emotions shredded it is raw and real and it hurts but also made me happy as it is a full on proper love story.
I read this in one sitting! Layla and Camden stole my heart with this sweet, romantic and steamy highschool friends to lovers, single mom, Rockstar story!
Layla and Camden's story isn't all fairytales and gumdrops, you'll swoon when they first meet and cheer for them but their HEA doesn't come easy and there's definitely some insidious and intense moments. I couldn't put this one down, I haven't read a rock star romance in a while and I'm just as invested in the rest of the guys in the band Declan, Braxton and Gage!
Controlled Chaos is a world wind of emotions, passion, love, family and friends all set to a background of heart wrenching moments and beautiful lyrics.
I just feel like you can’t go wrong with a Nikki Ash book. Unless you don’t like the accidental pregnant trope then stay far far away from her books.
I enjoyed this and I do not normally like rockstar romance. I have read every other series of hers and intentionally avoided this one due to not liking the rockstar stuff and lately I’ve had such bad reads I was like like I need something safe to be enjoyable, and that’s what her books are.
Oh and I need to get my IUD replaced in a few months and was considering going to pill birth control but the amount of pill birth control pregnancies this woman has written? Absolutely not, never. IUD for life.
Come ha detto una persona che conosco questo libro è perfetto per un film di tv8. Senza profondità, senza empatia, tutto affrontato come dei robot. Ho letto un articolo di cioè oppure un romance? T E R R I B I L E Autrice bocciata. Un Harmony ha più profondità
Nikki Ash is a new author for me and wow was I blown away by the first book in her new rockstar romance series which will feature the lives and loves of the members of Raging Chaos. Camden and Layla's story Controlled Chaos starts when they are young. They form an unbreakable friendship which Camden expected to last forever until one horrendous night turns everything on it's head.
One of their group of friends dies, a couple of close friends split up and Layla becomes engaged to David and moves away with him. With his heart broken Camden leaves town to seek success with his band.
Fast forward and Raging Chaos is topping the charts and Layla is trapped with her son in a loveless marriage. A move back to New York brings Layla back into the Camden's orbit. This gives him a second chance to win the woman he loves and their dormant feelings for each other quickly reignite into passion.
Nikki brings up some serious subjects in this story especially David's cruel treatment of Layla so it was good to see Camden step up to take care of her and her son. He is so supportive of them and so willing to do what it takes for them to be happy. Felix is such an adorable little boy and is lucky to have such an amazing mother who is always there for him.
I loved this second chance romance, it gripped me from beginning to end. I loved that Camden and the rest of the band despite their fame are really down to earth. Family and friends are still so important to them, and they want to be there to help instead of just throwing money at a problem, this makes them so much more realistic and human.
An excellent five star start to this new series and I can't wait for more stories about the other band members.
Nikki didn’t disappoint y’all. Controlled Chaos is a great start to an amazing new series. This book had me go through so many emotions. Layla was in an abusive relationship that eventually came to an end (please check trigger warnings). She’s such a strong person and wonderful mother who always put her son first. And, Camden omg, he’s so perfect 😍. He’s been in love with Layla for years and finally got his second chance. He was so sweet and patient with her like how can you not fall in love with him 😩
Perfect start to a new series!! Camden and Layla’s story is a childhood best friends to strangers to lovers, instalove romance that kept me on my toes and reading this book in 2 sittings!! Camden’s love and devotion to Layla was *swoon* everything! I cannot wait for the rest of the series!
Y’all are going to think I lost my mind. I am happily reading this amazing book by Ash and seeing there is some similarities to A CHANCE ENCOUNTER. And yeah, I read all the time and names just get all mixed up with how many books I go through. So when I found out this was based off Sophia and Easton’s son from that book I lost it. I can’t believe I didn’t put two and two together. But now that I have, it all makes perfect sense. Because I was even thinking, “I bet his parents have a book out there somewhere with the way Ash is going on about them.” Complete face palm moment.
Anyhow, back to CONTROLLED CHAOS, I was enamored from the start. I loved the close relationship Camden and Layla shared. They truly were the best of friends even though Camden may have wanted more. But he didn’t let his feelings for her get in the way and respected her more than anything else.
And oh my gosh the romance. Even years later, Camden still loved his girl. His time had finally come and he wasn’t letting her get away again. He was laying it all out on the line and seeing him going after Layla absolutely had my heart. And man, can these two get spicy or what?? They owned me and all my time.
But, as much as I loved this book, it also tore me up. I hurt for the things Layla went through and experienced. Absolutely. Tore. Me. Up. No one should ever have to go through what she and her son have.
Phenomenal in every way…especially now that I have made sense of everything and everyone. But even still, it was phenomenal then, too. This story has me all gaga over these two beautiful characters and even for what’s to come for the rest of the band. I can’t wait for each book to play out. 5 Stars.
Angsty friends to lovers is my absolute favorite trope, and Nikki Ash did such an incredible job with this book!
Camden was such a kind and patient MC. I absolutely adored his character and how understanding he was with Layla.
"So I’ll wait until she’s ready. Because I’m a patient guy." And boy, was he ever. Beautifully patient.
“This is my second chance,” he says, shocking me. “I let you go once, but I can’t do it again without telling you how I feel. I’m in love with you.
I'd be lying if I said the beginning of the book didn't have been wanting to shake Layla. How could she have been so BLIND???
The way he lifted her up when she doubted herself 😭
“If I had you, I know I’d never look outside. Them fucking blinds would stay closed.” He smirks, and I find myself laughing. “You’re beautiful and smart and sexy, and if I’m ever lucky enough to get you inside my four walls, I will prove to you every day that you’re all I see… all I want. That there’s nothing worth looking outside for." 👏👏👏

It was ok. If you like quick friends to lovers/rockstar reads with some emotional situations then you’ll like it. In saying that there were some parts that were rushed. I feel this had so much potential and had the bones of a great plot but it didn’t take advantage of it and skipped opportunities to build this into an amazing read.
POV: Dual, 1st person. SERIES or STANDALONE: 1st in series, can be read as a standalone. TROPES: M/F adult, friends to lovers, single mother, work colleagues, rock star romance. SIZE: 259 (last page) Kindle pages.

MY STORY SUMMARY: Camden has loved Layla since high school but missed his chance to tell her. 5 years later she is a newly single mum and he is a rockstar. He won’t let her go again and is determined to make her see what they could be together. She is dealing with a recent horrific incident and battles her now ex husband making things difficult and scary for her and her son. Camden and Layla turn their strong friendship into a beautiful romantic relationship doing their best to deal with all the troubles thrown their way.
I love romances that have to do with music and rockstars, so I wanted to read this book. It was the first book I read by Nikki Ash and the premise sounded so good, but from what I read of the book it just wasn’t for me and I didn’t want to continue.
🚩SPOILERS AHEAD
Layla and Camden were best friends and I really felt their connection. After their graduation Camden is afraid to tell her his feelings and their paths detach from each other. This part was very realistic and afterwards the book went totally downhill.
Layla gets together with David and soon after they marry and have a son. It took Layla way too long (until David raped her. Like wtf) to realize how shit of a person David is. He was toxic af and it was only red flags with him and Layla ignored them all (🚩suppressing her dreams 🚩only wanting her to be at home with the son 🚩being unfaithful to her and she immediately forgives him 🚩making vile comments to her even in front of other people 🚩doesn’t want her to meet or have friends and so much more).
After all of this that made up the first third of the book, the story lost all my respect and I couldn’t see past that.

Best friends to lovers/second chance romance….
This Rockstar romance is just what I needed after seeing Kings of Leon live a few days ago. I almost wish I kinda got into the career path of working behind the scenes at concerts just because I’ve always LOVED live music since like forever.
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐬 is book 1 in @authornikkiash Love and Lyrics series.
Camden and Layla’s story starts when she moves to Camden’s town as his neighbour. The two teens hit it off and over the years become BFFs along with their group of friends.
Camden and his friends are in a band together called Raging Chaos and hope they make it big one day. Layla has a love of photography and is always at their rehearsals shooting some video of them for them to upload online which has already garnered them attention online and they are almost semi famous.
Camden has always loved Layla even though she has a boyfriend. He just has never had the guts to tell her but wants to and decides their graduation night party will be the time to tell her, even though she has a boyfriend. Knowing that she is leaving for college with her bf, he wants to confess his feelings.
On high school graduation night so much happens in the blink of an eye which inevitably changes the course of all their paths. The boys leave to chase their music dreams and Layla goes off to college with said boyfriend.
5 years later and a new story begins. ✨
I really really liked this. I’m actually surprised I haven’t heard much about this book because it’s damn good! So emotional, so angsty and I LOVE time gaps between couples. The trauma that Layla suffers though made me stop breathing for a bit because it was unexpected but she was such a strong ass heroine to deal with what she went through.
Absolutely recommend this one to anyone!
𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝑾𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈: Spousal Abuse, on page detailed rape.
I literally only started this because it was single mum and eastons son! I literally read all this in one sitting, I devoured every moment of it! however it was a very quick read, which is again expected with the page count but I feel like so much was brushed over, Including laylas trauma and layla&camdens relationship when they got together, it just jumped from one milestone to another, which was cute and all but didn’t leave much room for us to see them growing together after everything they’ve been through! despite all that I did enjoy reading the book, and I was glad to see such a terrible and harsh thing happen be written with such delicacy, especially when it came to Layla and camden exploring that, again I just wish it wasn’t as rushed! however, as for laylas character, my heart broke for her so often, she spent the entirety of this book on edge and always in fear of what will happen, she truly deserves the best, and I adored every moment of her arc and development! as for camden, he was so sweet, understanding and caring, giving layla time when she needed that and being there without question when she needed him, he was so attentive and loving, my heart is SWOONING! overall, a good book, that’s a quick and easy read with great characters and arcs!
Camden and Layla met in high school and were best friends. Camden has always been heels over head for Layla, but timing was never right. Everyone saw the way he looked at her and cared for her, but her.
Layla married her high school sweetheart, and has the most adorable son, Felix. She is lost in her marriage and he is honestly not the best person. We see her struggle and become a single mother. Camden is back in her life and giving her all the opportunities, including her dream of being a videographer. He is determined to not loose her again this time and make sure she is treated how she should be and knows his feelings.
The way that Camden loves Layla and has pined after her just stole my heart. The moment she realizes a song he is singing is about her, along with all the others over the years, it’s so encapsulating.
Their story is not without ALL THE ANGST! It was such an emotional read and journey but with all these beautiful rays of light shining through despite the hard times.
Getting to know the other guys int he band too and their struggles or where they are at in life, I can’t wait to get their stories too.
Nikki Ash had me captivated by every word of Controlled Chaos. The angst from Camden’s harboring crush. The heartbreak Layla experienced. I was hit with all the feels both good and bad. Camden was just the sweetest with the way he looked out for not Layla but her son. Watching Camden and Felix bond made my heart just soar with so much happiness. He wasn’t afraid to pull out all the stops when it came to both wooing and protecting the woman he loved and damn it was sexy. Layla had all my admiration because she was such an amazing mom. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for him. Even at the detriment of herself, her son always came first. Her journey in finding her way back to herself and Cam was a hard fought one with some devastation along the way. But, love conquered all with these two. I loved every minute of Camden and Layla’s story. It was a beautifully written second chance rockstar romance that I just ate up enthusiastically from beginning to the end.
