How Dogs Work: a Head-to-Tail Guide to Your Canine by Daniel Tatarsky and illustrated by David Humphries is a wonderful book for any dog lover. It is filled with infographics and beautiful illustrations to represent or enhance the information that is being conveyed. In fact, the text is limited to only the most pertinent information and is rarely if ever more than a few sentences long. The longest piece of text was approx 8 sentences (perfect for those with a short attention span) and that was when describing the history and facts about the Dalmatian — there is a lot to say about those spots! There was a longer section and that was about the Crufts Dog Show but overall, the information is presented in bite-size chunks.

How Dogs Work consists of 50 small sections including the introduction. Of course there are those you would expect such as the types of dogs - Working Dogs, Pastoral Dogs, Utility Dogs, Hounds, Terriers, Gundogs, and Toy Dogs. But then there are many fun sections like Dogs with Jobs, Dogs in Literature, Don’t Eat That, Famous Dogs, and Body Talk. I loved the section Dogs on Screen as there were a few I wasn’t aware of.

The illustrations are delightful and will surely please any reader. There isn’t a single page without illustrations — even the glossary has a few — except for the index. The facts are presented in such a fun and cute way that it makes the appeal of this book widespread. It is such an enjoyable book that I cannot recommend it highly enough.

This is an excellent coffee table book for the young or primer for the uninitiated to get entertaining snippets of all things dog.

Every dog-related book or website I’ve browsed can be organized into two types: scholarly information about breeds and their history or practical “how to” instructions on dog training and ownership. This colorful book contains all this plus more, presented in an easy-to-read two-page format per topic.

The topics include delightfully cartoon artwork and humorous comments. For example, in a section about caring for a sick dog, there’s a colorful cartoon image of a dog vomiting. The vomit looks pretty, green, triangular, and very un-vomit like, and they added a humorous note of clarification pointing to the puke that says “this is not a wizard’s hat.” It’s similarly silly, caring, helpful, and factual throughout.

Thank you NetGalley for providing an ARC in exchange for my feedback.

Oh my goodness, this is one of the most adorable things I've ever seen 😭😭😭

This is such a precious, informative, and beautifully illustrated book about all kinds of dogs. It was such an engaging read because the information was presented in different ways (sometimes dog-shaped!) on each page, and I really enjoyed flipping through it. I'll definitely be purchasing copies of this in the future as gifts for my dog-loving friends. 🐕❤️

Thank you to NetGalley and DK for sending me a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review!

How Dogs Work by Daniel Tatarsky and David Humphries is a delightful book that, for the most part, delivers useful information in a humorous and lighthearted manner. My biggest issue is more about my preferences than something done poorly in the book.

I found the parts that had to do with understanding and interacting with your dog the most interesting. They offered simple rules and guidelines with adorable drawings. I could have done with less about the breeds, or at least the breed groupings. Which brings me to what just did not appeal to me, the overemphasis on purebred dogs. Yes, choosing the breed(s) of your dog is important based on your lifestyle and other factors. But how many winners of various dog shows were of what breed do not matter to me at all, in either my choice of a dog or in my interactions with my dogs. The groupings and their general characteristics could have taken considerably less room and been replaced with more information actually useful for dog owners. Yes, I am one of those who get my dogs from shelters or friends who have an unexpected litter, so the emphasis on purebred dogs rubbed me the wrong way. Like I said at the start, this is my personal preference. The parts I could have done without were done every bit as well as the rest of the book, so those into inbreeding can rest assured that it is all done well.

While I would recommend this to many people this is also one I would not give as a gift. It is a fun book and does offer helpful hints, but if I am giving to a new owner I would find one that is more geared toward that end and if I am giving to someone who just wants to better understand their dogs, I would find one geared more toward that.

There is some basic information in this book but the format really did not work for me. There are too many illustrations of ratings which are meaningless and/or subjective (like how popular a few fictional dogs are) and all kinds of information which is more skewed to the original British edition than this nominally American one. I found very little I did not already know, and the illustrations grated on my nerves (cutesy and nonspecific), as did some of the "jokes" which were simply not funny...
One section in particular really irritated me: Choosing a Dog. The information was far too superficial and there was a clear bias towards pedigreed dogs. There are some advantages to rescues other than simply saving a life -- like getting a dog who looks different than any you have ever seen before, or the appreciation and gratitude most of them show to their new owners once they are properly trained and socialized. (I have had both purebreds and rescues.)
There are several books I can think of which are more comprehensive and far more useful than this one, for example Harper's Illustrated Handbook of Dogs edited by Roger Caras, which lists every dog breed recognized in the US, is full of specific useful information, and has excellent photographs.
I gave How Dogs Work one star because I did not see any clear misinformation in the book, and if you know nothing about dogs this will probably not hurt you. But if you have ever had a dog or know anything about them it is a waste of time.

If you're a dog lover, want to know more about your dog, or thinking about adopting a dog, this is the book for you! Having my own furball a part of my family this book sparked my interest as this month of August, it's National Dog Month!

This book is able to entertain and provide educational visuals and information to a range of ages. The colorful illustrations but fun facts about the animal that is adorable and serious, had me finishing it in one sitting.

It starts off with a bit of history about dogs but is also able to flow your focus to anatomy, storytelling, and more. The fine balance between pictures and words will want you to binge the whole book. It was so helpful for me as it had new material about my own pup that I wasn't aware of before.

My favorite parts were learning about all the different breeds that were included but also the different short stories about heroic dogs! I hope that this review interested you in learning more about the fantastic caring animals. This dog book only made me love my dog more.

Love love, love this wonderful doggy treasure. As a dog owner and trainer, I found How Dogs Work to be the perfect starter book for wannabe dog owners and those who already belong to a dog pack. The book is filled with creative graphics, fun facts, important information with humor along the way. The graphics are excellent and engaging. The history of dogs and how their development occurs is informative.. The stages of a dog's life, from puppy to the Rainbow Bridge are sensitively written. This is a great book to read to children to educate them about their pet. Above all, Daniel Tatarsky presented important Information without judgment and wrote an enjoyable and educational doggy book about our best friends.. Thank you Netgalley and publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review, and special thanks to Mr. Tatarsky for including Doodles!! Easy five stars and highest recommendations

Absolutely adorable! With the holidays coming up, I think this would be the perfect gift for the dog lover in your life. I absolutely love dogs, and this book made me smile many times. I quite enjoyed all the illustrations and the brief explanations. It made it easier to read through and I was still able to learn things I didn’t know before. I think this type of formatting really worked for the information being relayed. This book outlines facts about the life of a dog in general as well as taking deeper dives into a variety of breed types. I quite enjoyed this book for a lighter read!

Very easy read, there was a lot of information that I thought there would be, but the overview is in good and there are some comical points throughout this book, there were also parts I could relate to and others not so much.
It would be of benefit to younger children who wanted to learn more about dogs, though it was a basic read, it was alright all the same.

I did think it might have been more in depth with the breeds than it was despite this not being the case, it's still an enjoyable read.

Thanks to netgalley for the free arc in return for a review.

This book is so and fun! It’s full of facts and very short entries with the C U T E S T illustrations, infographics, and commentaries to accompany them. My favorite part was the feature about different famous dogs throughout literature and history. It’s all delightful and plenty informative, but not so comprehensive that it’s overwhelming (I regard this like a fun facts book). This was cataloged as an adult nonfiction book at my branch but I think it’s a great all-ages read. My only concern…needs more corgis :-)

I have received the copy of this book in exchange to honest review via NetGalley.

Little well illustrated book with some basic and some interesting facts about dogs. While most of the information is quite generic, there are some bits more specific on certain breeds. Great book for the younger or less knowledgeable dog lovers!
Very easy too read - either from first page to last or from any random/desired chapter, entertaining.

As you’d expect from a DK book, this one is well-designed and packed with colorful and fun infographics and art. While it doesn’t go deep, it’s nevertheless engaging and full of facts about dog life stages, designer breeding, health tips, history of dog shows, and breakdowns of breed groups. Lots to pore over. I think it make a good gift for dog lovers under 18.

Thank you NetGalley!
This was an interesting overview of dogs and a dog's life with comical notes throughout. There was more information on dog shows than I was expecting but I like to watch dog shows from time to time so I found it interesting.
This is not the book for you if you're looking for in depth information about training, specific breeds, etc.
The images were fun and cute.

I really enjoyed it. It would also make a great gift!

Sadly, this book was in the adult nonfiction section and apparently, I know a lot about dogs. It wasn't bad, but my kids would have gotten more out of it than I did. I should have paged though the book before taking it home. I thought I would get some advice on how to prevent my dog from pulling the leash for the first 3 houses every walk. Nope, just a general overview on dogs.

This is a pretty cute little book. I did learn a few things. I loved the humor and illustrations. They were the best part of the book. I felt like it was jumping all over the place when it comes to content. It was hard to follow and sporadic. I think better organization would bump this up to a 4 star rating for me.
