One thrives off order. The other lets his heart guide him. Together they are perfectly balanced.
Jacob All elements of my life are controlled and measured. My days filled with check lists and colour-coded columns. With an animal and a youth shelter to run and people counting on me, I have no time for distractions. Yet I can't get the man I spent one fiery night with out of my head. He has me acting on impulses I didn't know I had and tossing my responsibilities aside.
I want to be with him and find the perfect balance between my personal and professional life. But how is that possible with us forced into a long-distance relationship as he travels with his hockey team? Just when I think we can follow our hearts and make this work, a face from my past reappears, threatening to destroy all I've built.
Matts I hoped returning to the NHL would fill the void in my life and restore my sense of purpose. Instead I felt that same emptiness. Until I met Jacob. After the anonymous night of passion we spent together, I'm elated to see him again at a fundraiser.
He's my teammate's little brother and he thinks it's wrong to put his happiness first. But I'm willing to do whatever it takes to prove our lives will be more fulfilling and complete together. One way or another, I will convince him happiness is worth the risk.

This 74k word story includes two men with giant hearts working towards healing themselves, off the charts sexual attraction, an obsession with lavender and the swooniest of grand gestures. Take Shelter With Me- MM (Sheltered Connection Series)
Sheltered Connections is a really nice collection of stories mostly set in a small town, Bloomsbury, in Canada. Each book in the series centres on someone in the town, guys who are all good friends and some running small businesses.
‘Take Shelter With Me’ features Jake who works for a local charity which provides a LGBTQ Shelter for young people who have been disowned by their families. Jake himself has no relationship with his parents but his older brother Austin who plays Ice Hockey in New York, and his husband Logan, an international Model, are his closest family.
Jake is a stickler for organising and managing, taking care of his charges in the Shelter. However at 27, he is lonely, shy and set in his daily routine of helping others, not looking out for himself and his own needs.
Flying to New York to wait for his brother to return from an away game, totally out of character he decides to go Clubbing, he is looking for a one night stand but he’s very ‘picky’, waiting at the bar and just watching for a while. Surprising himself, he leaves with a guy who attracted his attention, goes back to the guys hotel. Having had the best night of his life, he leaves early the next morning before the guy wakes.
The two MC’s here are the most adorable guys, both with hearts of gold, there are several characters from previous books strong,y featured here too. All adding up to a lovely read with some family angst.
I’m looking forward to reading others in this Sheltered Connections which feature the story of others in the little town of Bloomsbury, Canada.
I absolutely loved this book. From the way Jacob and Matts met to their reconnection and finally their HEA, I couldn’t stop turning pages as fast as I could. Both of their stories broke my heart, and I was so happy that they had found each other. And Austin is back, of course, as he’s Jake’s older brother and Matts’ teammate. You can read this as a standalone romance, but I recommend the whole series as cameos are made and you can check up this these guys I was given an ARC but the words are from the heart
(ARC review) At first, I didn't realize who this story was about.
Yes, SILLY, SILLY, SILLY ME.
I was just happy to be able to read another book by this author. And don't ask me the reason for this HUGE mental gap because, obviously, it is not the first time that Jacob appears in this series. I mean, it's almost like we watched him grow up? And then, after reading the first scenes (yes, not the prologue or the first page, it took me a little longer than that) I realized that Jacob was none other than Austin's brother! And yes, I maybe yelled a little bit. Just a little. Because I loved, I really loved the story of Austin and Logan (And maybe I loved Logan a little more than Austin) and every time I read Jacob's name in the other books I thought he deserved his own HEA.
I liked the first meeting between Jacob and Matts and that instant connection they feel. I liked their reunion, and how Jacob decides to explore this drive he feels towards Matts, despite his fears of disappointing Austin or feelings of not being enough for Matts due to what happened with his father in the past.
Matts surprised me. At first, I thought he was just another playboy. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I don't want to add much more because everything I get to write sounds like a spoiler to me, and I think this book deserves to be read without anything to tarnish it.
Take Shelter with Me is the third book in the Sheltered Connections series by author R.M. Neill. This story is told in dual POV, and it works great for this storyline. I have not read any of the other books in this series and was not lost starting here.
Jacob, he never does anything for him. He always has responsibilities; the shelter takes up tons of his time. When he goes to a club, he decides to do something just for himself for once and go with a hot guy he picks up at the club.
Matts: he is a professional hockey player. Turns out his on the team of Jacob’s older brother. He cannot stop thinking of Jake. But how can he have a relationship with someone who never puts themselves first?
I liked these two together. They each bring what the other needs to the table. They have a lot of growth in this book too. I loved this story and cannot wait for more from this series in the future.
Jacob Maloney is a kind hearted social worker who runs two shelters, one for animals and one for LGBTQ+ youth. He’s incredibly dedicated to his job, terrifyingly organized and quite shy. When he decides to visit a gay bar in NYC he meets a stranger who rocks his world. Matts is a hockey player looking for a second chance at the game, coming back after a long absence. He meets an adorable man at a bar, brings him back to his hotel and wakes up the next morning to find him gone. Each man finds himself thinking about the other, feeling like there was something special that slipped through their fingers. They find themselves reunited months later, in a strange twist of fate and the chemistry is instantly reignited. This is a beautifully written book, the characters are vivid and real. As Matts and Jake deal with old fears, secrets, and betrayal by a family member, their bond grows stronger and they find a way to make it through to their HEA. There are cameos by many characters from previous books, including Jake’s brother and his husband, the town veterinarian, a butcher, a baker and the kids at the shelter. It’s lovely to revisit old characters and to see Jake find the man of his dreams. I loved this book and can’t wait to read more stories from R.M. *I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest review*
If you've read the previous books in this series, you'll remember the self effacing Jacob. This really is the story he deserves. It reads like a modern day Cinderella, love found, love lost, love rediscovered. Matts is a wonderful partner for Jacob, handsome caring and he adores him. There is very little angst in this one, only towards the end does it raise its ugly head. Nice romance, very likeable MCs, the perfect read if you fancy a bit of fluff in your life.
This is the the Book for Jacob and Matts. What a MARVELOUS fitting story for this beautiful couple. I loved this Book so much! So many unexpected twists concerning Jacob and Austin's Father. What a piece of work he is. I was completely captivated by this Book and the relationship between this couple. This is what romance is all about and Jacob deserved the best. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS INCREDIBLE SHELTERED CONNECTION SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!
H This series is truly something special, each is beautifully written with wonderful characters. Jacob had been a steady and caring presence in Bloomberg. The one always taking care of others- his friends, the kids and animals at the shelters, and his older brother Austin. But he is also lonely and still dealing with the scars left by his father’s cruelty. I love that Jacob finally finds his special someone in Matts. Matts is just returning to hockey after taking time off to deal with a terrible family tragedy. Their initial meeting and hook up was a steamy and fun way to start. I especially loved how their next meeting was cleverly woven into the plot of the previous books - this time from Jacob’s perspective. Jacob deserved someone special and epic and does Matts ever deliver! I loved how determined he was in making sure Jacob gets all the love and happiness he deserves. There is a great combination of both romance and crazy hot chemistry between this couple and both aspects are very well done. I also love the quiet world building that takes place across the books, the result feels like a real small town community with lots of colorful characters and amazing couples. I loved Matts and Jacob and look forward to more from this series❤️. I received an arc of this book and this is my honest review
Matts and Jacob were so adorable. I love how caring Jacob is and how he puts all of himself into taking care of the kids at the shelter and his town. Matts was such a nice guy and I loved how much he wanted to show Jake that he was worth it. I look forward to reading the next book and maybe going back and reading the others in the series.
A deeply heartfelt, beautifully written story. I love Jake and Matts and got so emotionally involved in their budding relationship. I will always smile and think of them whenever I come across the scent of lavender. A warm and delightful read.
This book had some emotional heft to it and the background of the main characters was done well. This is part of a series but I did not read the others and this can work as a standalone fine. Our two main characters are Matts, an NHL hockey player returning to the ice after a forced absence, and Jacob, who runs a youth shelter and charity and is the younger brother of another hockey player on the same team. I liked the set up whereby Jacob and Matts meet at a bar (Jacobs first tentative visit to such a place) and have a one night stand. Matts would have preferred this be the start of something but Jacob fled before he woke up and left a false number. Both parties seem to pine for each other a bit but never expect to see each other again. Surprise! Matts is asked to help out with the charity and Jacob and him reconnect. Their relationship runs pretty smoothly with some angst thrown in for the possible reaction of Jacob's brother. One star off for the entirely left field turn the story took at the end with the introduction of another character just to create conflict. It only 'sorta' worked but overall I really liked both the main characters and their interactions.
RM Neill has written a series of books that pull at our heartstrings AND have ANIMALS as a theme, in her Sheltered Connections series ♥️ It is Brilliant❣️
We met Jacob earlier in the series. We have even had the chance to watch him mature. In book 3, Take Shelter With Me, he is now looking at his life as a young man and recognizing that his attempt to control his emotions may need to change. It’s time for him to try something new. He connects with a mysterious and beautifully sweet man on a steamy and unexpected one night stand. And he can’t stop thinking of him.
Matts finds his own mysteriously beautiful and sweet young man in a one night stand, and he can’t seem to get him out of his mind. Returning to professional hockey, he thought he would feel better about his life, but realizes he is looking for more. He needs a connection of the heart .
This author ties these two, and us, up in the feels in a big way, as they work towards finding their way back to each other. There are mountains and valleys that they have to travel to get there, that’s for sure. You may find yourselves cheering at times, as they make their way closer and closer.
You may also feel your heart shattering, as time and again, decisions, and people from the past, make finding shelter from heartache achingly painful.
But you will love this story ‘til the cows come home!
This is the first book in this series I have read--and I will not be reading further--there are many better MM romances out there. The MCs are both very sweet--one, Jake, manages a shelter for LGBTQ youth and the other, Matts, is a pro hockey player--but the plot is clunky. Their relationship is instalove--which to me seemed like lust--and the coincidence that re-unites them after a one-night stand is just too improbable. The plot issues don't stop there. The sexual attraction seems like the only thing holding them together until for some reason they both declare that the other makes them feel complete--the "love" continues to be expressed in one cliche after another. Apart from sexual attraction, in fact, what happens in the book is almost completely lacking in motivation.
Both MCs have dark family backgrounds. Matts' family tragedy, while possible, seems highly improbable. When the author realizes at about 75% that the book is running out of steam, suddenly we get the revelation that Jake's father is seeking revenge on him for turning him in for embezzling funds. We are thrown into the middle of a sting operation that comes out of nowhere. Then Matts gives up the sport he apparently loves to become a gardener. The plot is clunkier than the typical MM romance. Maybe the author just need a couple more drafts?
Finally, I never believed Jake as a man; as in many MM romances written by women for women, one MC is smaller, passive, nurturing, and wants to be claimed by his man, the larger muscled guy with "legs like tree trunks" (can we ban this descriptor from MM romance, please?) . Jake even jumps up and throws his legs around Matts at one point--not something that gay guys do. This is really an MF romance in MM clothing.
Overall, this was okay but there are much better ones out there.
A one time only hook up blooms into something beautiful. Jake and Matts are gorgeous, funny, and doing the long distance relationship thing. A truly sweet story that slowly builds, the last 20/25% is a little intense. A very enjoyable story, a cozy read.
Jake is a giver. He is so busy taking care of others, he rarely takes time for himself. So, while in New York, house sitting for his brother, he decides to leave his comfort zone. He thought his outing was a bust, but as he was about to leave the bar, he feels the man behind him. Before he knows it, he's heading to his apartment. Jake enjoyed one of the best nights of his life. Unsure of mornings after, Jake sneaks out early, leaving quietly without so much as a note.
Matts thought his return to professional hockey was just what he needed to get his life back and heal after personal tragedy. He was only in New York for the week, meeting with what he hoped would be his new team. He never thought a one night pick up in a bar would change his life.
For three months, Jake has kept the memories of that one special night close. Unable to forget Matts, he can't believe it when Matts turns up to participate in a fundraiser for the shelter Jake runs. And now that they have found each other again, neither is willing to let go.
This is a sometimes humorous, sometimes emotional story of two men searching for that certain something that is missing in their lives. I loved that Jake and Matts seemed to understand each other so well, how they have a connection almost immediately. I also liked the banter between Jakes and the teens he cares for at the shelter. Those scenes reveal the strength Jake is capable of, the strength he'll need when his past catches up with him and threatens everything he has found with Matts.
This is the third in the Sheltered Connections series, and I've been waiting for Jake's story since the first book. I was so looking forward to Jake finally getting his happy ever after and I wasn't disappointed. I think this may be the best of the three, and that's saying quite a bit as I really liked the other two books as well.
Jake runs the animal and youth shelter and has been featured in the first two books but it was good getting to know him better. I love how organised he was, yet had a wild side that he'd show only to Matts, as it turned out. I liked the two main protagonists, honestly. Both had trauma in their past that they're trying to get over - and Jake's in particular added a little twist that I really enjoyed. I enjoyed more so how Jake got out of trouble, it's a little peeve of mine that people do silly things and I'm glad Jake didn't, it was a nice refreshing change.
These two together were hot, funny, sweet and so meant for each other, it was brilliantly done. While they did have that initial first hookup, the rest was a wonderful slow burn with lots of sweetness and dare I say fluff. I'm all for fluff in books with a little angst and this had that too. I loved this story and I was so glad to see Jake get his happiness because that boy deserves it. So does Matts and I loved it all.
This is the third book in this series but the first one that I have read. I was able to fully enjoy this book without having first read the other two books. But reading this one will make you want to go back and read the other two. I have to say up front that I loved this book. This is the story of Jacob and Matts. They first meet in a one night stand with no names that neither one can forget. Matts has just returned back to professional hockey after a 5 year absence for family related reasons. He becomes fast friends with his teammate Austin. He agrees to appear at a fundraiser for at risk LGBTQ youths. Showing up a day early to help with the set up he meets Austin's brother Jacob. The one night stand that he can't forget. Jacob is a counselor at the shelter and the organizer of the fundraiser. Both are shocked to see each other again. But it is not all sunshine and rainbows. Both have problems and family baggage to unpack before they can be free to do what they want. This is their story. It is very well written and easy to read. I read it in one sitting. I loved this book.
This being the 3rd book in the Sheltered Connections series, there’s a high expectation that it either be as good or better than the first two books which were very, very, very good! R.M. Neill certainly does not disappoint spinning out this wonderful story. I always eagerly anticipate the next book in the series.
This particular one focuses on Jacob, the hardworking coordinator of the animal/youth shelter. His older brother, Austin happens to be a NHL Pro Hockey player for the NY Mafias. They had recently acquired a player named Matts who recently had to start over after a bad situation in the past. Matts is the other MC who had a “one night stand” with Jacob but they didn’t know each others’ names. They soon would be meeting once again since Austin is one of the owners of the animal/youth shelter and they were planning a gala as a fundraiser for the shelter. Austin invited Matts to be one of the celebrities to help draw people to the gala. That’s where I’m going to stop and have you ponder “What happens next?????” And hopefully entice you to pick up the book and read it. If you haven’t read the first two books, please do! Your time will be worth it.
Jacob and Matts first meet and have an anonymous, blazingly hot hook up. Seriously hot. Jacob had decided to do something for himself for once, because most of his life centers around taking care of others. After the hook up, Jacob doesn't think he'll see his anonymous guy again, but fate has other plans.
This book is the third in a series, but can be read as a standalone. I did read the other two first, and it was wonderful to catch a glimpse of the characters who were featured in previous stories. Jacob and Matts were great characters. They absolutely had immediate passion for each other, but were able to also slowly build a real connection when they were apart from each other due to their careers. I loved that lavender, often used as a calming scent, was an instant and ongoing reminder for Jacob of their intense desire.
Matts was so lovely and such a sweetheart towards Jacob. He was swoony and wonderful. This book was fabulous and the whole series was worth reading. This book had all the romance and feels and heat. I really enjoyed this story!
A- FREAKIN- DORABLE!! This was such a great addition to this Series. I have been anticipating Jake's book from the beginning and I adored it!!! Jake is such a love, always putting himself on the back burner taking care of everyone else's wants and needs...he finally takes a leap and goes for a one night stand with a gorgeous man that lights his world on fire...time passes and fate hands him his perfect man again.....his anonymous hookup turns out to be his brother Austin's hockey teammate Matts....who has not been able to get his shy and adorable one night stand out of his head!!!! They immediately pick up where they left off....their chemistry so undeniable and scorching 🔥 not only that....This couple was adorable, they were so sweet with one another and incredibly loving....they were the epitome of "finding the other half of your soul". As always the side characters were awesome, Katie is hilarious! I love this series and this book was the icing on the cake, I 100% recommend!
* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
I was lucky enough to win a digital copy of this book in one of the FB groups I follow. RM Neill is a new to me authors. I loving finding good new authors. I must say this book did not disappoint. The writing and story was great. I am so happy to have found a new authors. Now I must go back and read more of RM Neill's books, especially Austin's story.
Jake was in New York cat sitting for his brother while he was away. Jake decided to something out of his comfort zone and go to a bar. Where he met and had a fabulous night with a stranger. Now back at his "grey" life as a social worker all he has are his memories.
Matts relocates to NY to become a new member of the NY Mafia hockey team. Matts had a one night stand with a mystery man who he referrs to as his "angel". Matts wishes his angel would have left his correct name and number because he felt such a connection.
Oh when they finally meet up again, it's fabulous. I LOVED this book. I am so delighted I won a copy. I am going to devour others by this author.
I’ve loved this series so far, and the third installment was no disappointment. It got a bit corny at times, but what’s a romance novel without some level of corny? Jacob is adorable and sweet. His love and care that he gives the kids at the youth shelter he runs is some of the most heart warming content I’ve read in a long time, and Matts’ integration into the shelter life was seem less and beautiful. Their “one night stand” obviously progresses into more and while I did love Jacob and Matts’ story, I couldn’t help but feel like the resistance to dating on Jacob’s end was a bit pointless, because wishing the same chapter their agreeing to date begins his brothers back haha. Based on the discretion of Matts’ I don’t don’t blame him, I just thought it was funny how quickly he changed his tune. The 3rd quarter is filled with family drama that seemingly came out of now where but added a level of risk and stakes to a book that could of easily just if relied on the trial and tribulations of the shelter.
I loved this third book in the series, and once I’d started reading, it was addictive. Jacob and Matts are amazing, and I adored them right from the start. Their journey begins with a chance meeting, and they soon find there is instant chemistry between them; I loved watching them overcome time, distance and family issues to find their HEA. Jacob is such a sweet, caring man and has a hidden strength that comes through at just the right time, and Matts is genuine, lovely and as perfect for Jacob as he is for him. With a great storyline, strong main characters and wonderful secondary characters, especially the colourful Katie, this book has humour, a dash of angst and many sweet with heat and swoon-worthy moments. Although this is part of a series it could easily be read as a stand-alone, and I highly recommend it and am looking forward to the next one. I received a copy of this book from GRR to review, and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.
Meh. Little bits and details didn’t connect with me. Jacob runs a LGBTQIA shelter and an animal shelter but the animal shelter is never on page. And the LGBTQIA shelter seems a little haphazardly run, like no employees besides Jacob. Idk. Makes a sorta kinda sense to have kids interacting with animals, but that never happens. So why include that detail at all?
Jacob was nervous about telling his brother Austin about Matts, which seemed silly, and put off being open about their relationship because of it. Matts and Austin had only just met themselves and Jacob has a positive relationship with Austin. Seemed like some unnecessary drama.
And the stuff with the father at the end seemed a bit out of left field. Very little build up and then easily resolved as quickly as it appeared.
I might give the author a second chance but I’m not rushing out to read more either.
First off, I do recommend reading The Perfect Pass before reading this one. That is Austin’s story, and he plays a huge supporting role in this story. I had the honor of beta reading this story. I laughed and giggled most of the way through reading it. Matts and Jacob were so much fun to read. They were absolutely amazingly perfect together. Matts goes with the flow to Jacobs orderly life. I can honestly say I will never smell lavender again without getting all hot and bothered. I loved the communication, the chemistry, the romance, there wasn’t anything about this book that disappointed. It hooked me and engaged me so much that I couldn’t stop reading it and was begging the author for more! Overall, a truly beautiful and romantic story, pure fun to read! A must read!!
From the beginning pages I absolutely loved Jacob and Matts! They are living different kinds of lives. Jacob working for the shelter and Matts being a hockey player. We get a hot size difference, but Matts is as lovable and sweet as Jacob! We start with Jacob who decided to have what he tells Matt is his first one nighter. Matts enjoys that Jacob seems so innocent and shy on the surface but then basically jumps him on their 0ne nighter! I love it when the smaller guy gets all frisky first and climbs the big guy!! The way they meet a second time is fun and I do not want to give that away! I read an arc and you can read this as a standalone romance, but I recommend the whole series as cameos are made!
First time reading this author and I’m a fan! The prologue sets off the book with great chemistry with Jacob and Matts! If the book starts off like that, where else is there to go!? I absolutely love the plot twist (no spoilers!!) and probably had a grin while reading it cause it certainly had a TV movie feel to it! You can feel the stress of the long distance between them and the drama of family issues that pop up later in the book but it’s the big heart of Matts at the end that does me in! There are some wonderful secondary characters that add to the storyline. It was a light hearted romance with some fun moments thrown in for a HEA. I am an ARC reader for this book and this is my fair and honest review.
