After spending years reading Diane Capri’s Hunt for Reacher novels, I was introduced to another of her series that packs just as much punch. Michael Flint, who appeared in the latest Hunt for Reacher novel, has a story all his own and one that many readers will surely find quite alluring. As Flint finds himself looking for a woman who is set to inherit a large sum of money, he’s faced with just how hard some people want to keep from being found, and the ghosts that lurk in their past. Capri shows her versatility with this piece, which capture’s the reader’s attention.
Michael Flint has spent the last number of years tracking down those who are set to inherent something or other. However, heir hunting is not as easy as it seems. While Flint brags that he can find most anyone, he may have met his match.
After he is called to a Houston skyscraper, Flint is tasked with finding Laura Oakwood, who has inherited her family ranch, which sits atop a massive (and as yet, untapped) oil field. Laura knows nothing of these riches, but two oils tycoons want her found or the land signed over for exploration. Laura has been missing for 28 years, not long after she was fingered for being part of a robbery gone bad that left people dead and her wanted in connection with the crime.
While Flint is ready for the challenge, he could not have known it would be this difficult, forcing him to battle henchmen on both sides trying to one-up each other, as well as the multiple dead-ends that the search garners. Flint will have to brave the cold of rural Saskatchewan, in Canada, to locate Laura Oakwood and potentially her offspring, who disappeared with her. Will Flint have enough time before the clock runs out and the land goes to someone else? Flint will do all in his power to bring another heir into the fortune they deserve. Capri keeps the reader enthralled until the very end and shows just how varied her writing can be.
As I said before, I have always known Diane Capri to be the author of a Jack Reacher spin-off, but I knew she had some other series in her quiver. When Michael Flint made an appearance in the latest Reacher tale, I thought that I would give his series a try, if only to compare it to what I had read for so long. Capri shows she has what it takes and kept me guessing until the very end of this crime thriller.
With a strong narrative base, Capri adds depth to her story through a string of strong characters, none of whom appear to get along completely with their neighbours. While there is some great development, it is the backstory of Michael Flint that provides the most interesting aspects for the reader to enjoy. With more to the series, one can only hope there will be moments to add to this character, who has my attention already. Great plot twists, in a story where locating a missing person is high on the agenda, proves highly successful and keeps the reader wondering how things will progress. I’ll set aside some of the foibles in the narrative as they relate to Canada and allow readers to focus on the larger story. I found myself quite enthralled with how Capri presented things, as I tried not to compare things to their other series. There is a lot to enjoy herein and I hope to enjoy the rest of the series in short order.
Kudos, Madam Capri, for keeping me entertained, no matter what you’re writing.
In my little world of mysteries and thrillers, what gives me the greatest joy? Easy: Characters I enjoy reading about and - be still my heart - discovering that I'll be able to read about them again and again as part of a series. So color me delighted to find this book, which introduces "heir hunter" Michael Flint.
Turns out he's a pretty cool character, with the requisite hard-scrabble secret agent background, deadly aim with just about every gun known to humankind and a tech-savvy female investigator pal who's got some fairly hefty baggage of her own. Like the sedimentary form of quartz with which he shares a name, Flint is hard-nosed and gets fired up when fired at - but underneath that shoulder holster is a layer of uncertainty born of a chaotic childhood.
When the book begins, Flint is busy trying to track down a painting that was stolen by the Nazis but now is "owned" by a man in hiding. That man ends up dead, forcing Flint to look for a relative who can sign the stolen painting over. Just as he's deciding where to go next, his destination is decided for him; he gets a call from Texas oil baron Sebastian Shaw, who demands that they meet immediately. Flint bristles at being ordered around, but then learns the command comes by way of his oldest friend, investigator Kathryn Scarlett (the oil baron, it seems, is her client).
Capitulating to keep the peace and great working relationship with Scarlett, Flint meets with Shaw, who hires him to find a woman named Laura Oakwood. The woman, who Flint learns has been hiding in parts unknown for something like 28 years because of her involvement in an armed robbery and murder, won't be easy to find. But the oil baron has his heart and pocketbook set on buying lucrative mineral rights to land she inherited from her family - rights worth something like $50 million. Problem is, time is paramount; unless Shaw gets the signature within a few days, he'll lose his option, Oakwood will lose the money forever and (horror of horrors) the mineral rights will go to Shaw's arch rival, Felix Crane.
Shaw wants the woman found, while Crane's best interests lie in the opposite direction - and in that winner-take-all atmosphere, both men are willing to do whatever it takes to get the outcome they want. The chase runs from Texas to Canada and back, racking up all sorts of modes of transportation from helicopters, muscle cars, airplanes and machines that can navigate heavily snow-covered territory. At each stop along the way, layers are peeled back and secrets are uncovered that lead to an action-packed finish.
So what's next? No cliffhangers here, thankfully, but there are enough loose ends that could make good fodder for the next assignment, should the author decide to accept it. I'll be waiting! Meantime, I thank the author and publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review this one in exchange for an honest review.
This story was pretty dull. Great Narration by Eric Dove. (audible review)
The entire story is this guy who can find anyone looking for a girl that went missing 25 years ago. That's it. It was just clue after clue to find her. That's it.
So if you are looking for something exciting or intriguing move on and find a different book.
The only reason I kept going was because of the narrator. Eric Dove is one of my very favorite male narrators. So the listen was great. The story not so much.
Don't start reading this book at bed time! I was up half the night (at least it was Friday night...) until I finished it. Fast paced, action packed, great character development...I couldn't put it down. Will now read some of her older books and await the next one in the series.
This was the Nook serial read for April 2023. This was an interesting start to a series. I thought the quest to find the missing person was engaging, but a secondary mystery more personal to Flint started to unfold at the end of this that was really intriguing. I would read the next book just to see what is uncovered in regards to that. I don't feel like I really got to know any of the characters in this, which may come with the job and not being able to trust others and whatnot. I'd give the next book a try though.
Blood Trails by Diane capri is a mystery and thriller and general fiction (adult) read. Michael Flint is the heir hunter of last resort. A forensic genealogist and former clandestine agent specializing in high-end private investigations, he promises clients he can find anyone, anytime, anywhere—dead or alive. Laura Oakwood stands to lose more than $50 million in mineral royalties if she’s not found within seventy-two hours. But she presents an extra challenge: she’s been running from the law due to her involvement in a deadly armed robbery twenty-eight years ago. Texas oil baron Sebastian Shaw desperately needs Laura’s signature to take over her family’s oil fields. And Shaw’s bitter rival, Felix Crane, will do anything to keep that from happening. In a hunt stretching from dusty, hot West Texas to snowy Saskatchewan, Flint finds himself caught in the cross fire between dueling tycoons and avaricious mercenaries out for their own piece of the pie. On Flint’s side? A knack for keeping himself alive, a hard-won moral code, and buried questions about his own family that drive everything he does. As Flint tracks Laura, he delves into his own murky history, whose secrets he is only now beginning to uncover. This was an absolutely fantastic read with brilliant characters. Flint was my favourite character. He reminded me of borne. This was very hard to put down. From start to finish it was full of twists. I loved the ending too. Highly recommended. 5*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.
Michael Flint is the Man; if there's something or someone you want found - at a cost, of course - he'll do it! Under contract for his longtime friend Kathryn Scarlett, at Scarlett Investigations to locate and return a long-lost masterpiece painting, he's interrupted in delivery by a new contract that seemingly can't wait. On the surface it's simple - locate a woman missing/on the run for 27 years and get her to inherit a fortune in exchange for signing over oil and mineral rights to a ranch she hasn't lived at since childhood. Of course things are never that straightforward in a career like Flint's and he's soon being attacked and sidetracked by people from his own childhood as an orphan in a dirt-poor town, to contract killers, luxury hotels and everything in between, as the mystery deepens - and time is running out fast! Who is Selma Oakwood and what is her connection to Laura Oliver? Who now lives at the ranch - does he have a real claim to it? Why did old friends Crane and Shaw become frenemies and what are they both chasing? What is the fate of Laura Oakwood and what is the secret about her that Flint discovers? How does Flint end up in the Alps and who betrays him there? Does he survive the avalanche? Who gets the money in the end and how do they feel about it?
Without doubt Queen of Murder Mysteries, Diane Capri has generously given the reading world another winning series of literary gems, that will have thriller lovers bowing down to worship at her feet. I loved it and can't wait to read the next in the series - get your copy today!
What’s not to like-first this author gave us Jack Reacher….now it’s heir hunter, Michael Flint! Great character development, clue after clue to find after her after 20+ years, Texas small towns, two ruthless tycoons and an OK plot. Enjoy
This new story addresses the facinating industry of heir hunting. In this case, the heir hunter company is owned by Kathryn Scarlett who is well known for her successes. She is generally employed by extremely wealthy clients when there are huge stakes involved. When her operatives are unable to complete the job, she calls on her childhood friend and “as needed” employee, Michael Flint. Flint is very top level “secret agent” type guy who can find anyone, anywhere, anyhow. The heir to be found in this story involves a $50M mineral rights claim to oil and gas field in Texas. Right away, you could tell that this is no small, uninteresting paper search for someone. Too much at stake - billionaires, mercenaries, gun fights, robbery, murder, and helicopter, car, and snowmobile chases. Then, underneath it all, the characters have a complex history that is slowly and steadily unveiled throughout the book. It was nice to read a thriller that is just as exciting but still very different from terrorists, legal battles, and serial murderers.
I highly recommend this book. It is the beginning of, I am sure, an whole new successful, exciting, and quite unique series for Diane Capri
Diane Capri is a new author to me and this first book in the Heir Hunter series has left me in doubt that I should seek out more of her work. The main character Michael Flint was introduced in a story line that moved at a rapid pace throughout the 72 hours deadline given to him to find the missing heir. Whilst I wasn't fully convinced by the ease in which significant clues were being identified, the narrative absorbed the reader into the plot and left me satisfied by the time I had reached the final page of the book. As a Jack Reacher fan, I shall now be looking for copies of her books in the Hunt For Reacher series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Michael Flint is the protagonist or maybe, after all, he is a hero. Flint is an heir hunter who claims to be able to find anyone. This time, he's given the task of finding a woman who hasn't been seen or heard of for more than 20 years. Added to the problem is that time is very limited. An option is about to expire and two oil moguls are in a fight to the end to get the rights.
Michael Flint and his associate, Katie Scarlett have few clues to the missing woman's whereabouts and Flint is being pursued on both sides and everywhere he goes Well worth a read and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Michael Flint is a former agent that works in the high end heir hunter investigative field. He can and always finds anyone that he is assigned to find. This time he is looking for a woman who 26 years years ago, disappeared. Two Texas oil barons are looking for her to acquire mineral rights on land that she inherited. This is a fast paced story delving into forensic genealogy. And as Flint searches, the rivals send out mercenaries to get a jump on each other, putting Flint in the middle of their crosshairs. Thank you Thomas & Mercer and Diane Capri for this free copy of "Blood Trails" a great beginning to an interesting series.
The author,Diane Capri, pulls us in quickly with her new series first book. It is about a 'heir-hunter',and the main character is a man named Flint, who claims he can find anyone, anytime, for a large fee,of course! He is well trained in combat and an awesome street fighter, but also is very intelligent, which makes him much more dangerous! I actually read this right through from start to finish, was so into the happenings that I could not go to sleep until I finished the book. Great characters with several plots keep you turning pages!!
Michael Flint is an heir hunter. He can find anyone, anywhere. Even ones who thought they were well hidden. He' s the highest priced but what would you pay for the best? The storyline kept me turning pages till the end. Make sure you set aside time to read this book because you'll be consumed until the book is finished. That said, I did have to reread a few pages due to the timeline. Michael Flint is my favorite Diane Capri leading character. Blood Trails is an entertaining and exciting read !!!
I was delighted to have the opportunity to read the first book in Diane Capri's new series, featuring Michael Flint, an heir hunter (you've got to read the book to find out what one does.) If you want intense action right from the first page, this is your book! I didn't even look up until I had read five chapters. Can't wait for the next one! I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review, but then I bought a copy. Yup, it's that good.
I actually enjoyed this free book. Being an avid genealogist, I appreciated the underlying research that would be needed to locate missing heirs. The main character was appropriate for an action adventure novel. Would read more in this series.
I borrowed Blood Trails from the Kindle Unlimited program.
In Blood Trails Michael Flint is called in to find a missing woman after she disappeared in 1989. Laura Oakwood is heir to a fortune if he can find her in seventy-two hours; the task is easier said than done. Two rich and powerful men are fighting over the oil field and the oil and mineral rights that Laura holds is the key to the ownership of the oil field. One hold an option for the property if he can buy out Laura's rights and the other hold the option for when her rights expire.
The search involves trips to West Texas, brutal competition working to stop Flint from finding the missing woman, a sabotaged and downed helicopter, an attack by a wild pig, taser and lots of action. He follows a number of dead end leads that when put together help him find the missing woman. The twist at the end of the story when he finds Leslie Owens a.k.a Laura Oakwood adds to the excitement.
I got this book because I'd read several of the Willa Carson and Hunt for Jack Reacher books and enjoyed them. I was curious to see if Ms Capri could handle the "rock 'em, sock 'em" of an action thriller that the Heir Hunter series promised to be. She certainly can. The last third of this book has as much action and suspense as any I've read in a while. The concept of being a "heir hunter" was a unique idea for a series and her man, Michael Flint, seems to be adequate to the task. The only shortfall I found was the Flint character is missing the same quality of backstory I'd gotten with the main characters in the Carson/Reacher stories. I feel like I have a connection with Carson and the FBI agents after only a few stories. I don't have have that yet with Flint. There is a second in the series, maybe I'll find it there.
Despite being the first book in the series, it felt like there were other books I should've read beforehand (this is my first Diane Capri read). That being said, I liked it enough to want to read more from Capri.
It felt a bit like a classic hardboiled detective novel, like something written by Raymond Chandler: lots of exposition & very little dialogue. I would've preferred, personally, more dialogue; explaining characters relationships through their conversations, instead of being told the information. Also, & this may be because of the way the ebook was formatted, but the writing seemed a bit choppy.
Lots of short sentences.
Very small paragraphs. Only a few sentences at a time.
Capri's work is solid, perhaps a little choppy but serviceable.
Characters like Mike Flint are interesting and engaging. Her settings and the bouncy way he goes about his investigations holds my interest.
still, the story seems implausible what with oil barons duking it out over a new find and needing a signature from a missing woman to clinch the deal. Is no one capable of forgery? for $50 million you'd imagine some genius would realize they could steal her inheritance with no one wiser since she's the only one who could call them on it and no one's seen or heard from her in twenty seven years.
oh, well, the action is fair and the plot holds together.
I liked the meat of the story. I would have liked more interaction with the gritty characters with good hearts but rough-hewn lives and hands. Then it had a flavor of ocean's 11 or 12 about it, especially the beginning, and ended with a scene from a James Bond movie. If you kill the cheap rip offs from other styles, you got a pretty damn good book. . . flesh putt the main character a bit more like Dave Robicheaux, giving him depth and contradiction, and then we're on our way to the rodeo. Looking forward to seeing how this author develops. Will read the next in the series.
Blood Trails by Diane Capri was April's B&N Serial Read. I looked forward to the arrival of each chapter every day and I was wishing that I had the entire book to read so I could finish it faster! This is mystery thriller that captured my attention. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The plot and characters are well developed. There are a lot of heart stopping moments that will take your breath away. Michael Flint is my new James Bond - without the sex scenes! This book does not have foul language or sex scenes, but WOW does it have adventure and drama. I highly recommend this book. Thank you B&N.
Being a first in series, this book was actually pretty good. I found myself thinking I might just read more in this series, especially, since I only read it because the nook app had it as a chapterized title for free. I didn't think it would interest me upon first glance, but the story held my attention all the way through, and was good enough if I can get more in the series, I probably will. If you're a detective story fan, this one will appeal, there's some mystery there too, and a bit of murder to go along with it all. It might be interesting to see what kinds of cases the main character runs into next.
In trying to develop a new character, this is definitely a winner.
I enjoyed the story from beginning to end. It was interesting in seeing his thought process in determining how to locate these people. It showed that he use the help of his associate in checking out clues while he spent his time getting into the persons mind of how they operated.
The ending was interesting and I look forward to reading more in this series. I highly recommend this book.
This rates right up there with her other series for enjoyment.
Meh. Another mystery/suspense book with a hero who can outfight and outthink everybody else. And of course he has high morals and a heart of gold. And is a Scotch connoisseur Every other character is motivated primarily by money, but not Our Hero. The coincidences are ridiculous. Ex: The old woman who ran the school/orphanage that Our Hero attended turns out to be the one person who knows the key to solving the mystery. The quest at the heart of the book is interesting enough. Just too much of a formula book - not enough originality.
Blood Trails (Heir Hunter #1), my fourteenth read from author Diane Capri. An enjoyable mystery by a fellow northern Michigander. Since I own both the Kindle & Audible editions I was able to follow along while being read to. Narrator Eric G. Dove's narration made the book fly by and increased the book's enjoyment. I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Closer to 2.5 stars. I like her Search for Reacher series better.
This Flint is just too too. He makes you think of a 007 coming from.the private structure side.
It's action in max modes. With too much superlative all around. Physical action with intense danger/ violence quotient involved reader lovers may go for it.
Easy read with with sentence structures that remind me of James Patterson. No more Flint for me.
"Blood Trails" by Diane Capri is a mystery story about Michael Flint looking for a a woman last heard from years earlier. She's the last living heir to an oil field in Texas that two rival mega billionaires want to own. The woman will inherit many millions if she's found in 72 hours otherwise the worse billionaire will seize the land leaving her with nothing. It's a clue after clue storyline using too much stream of consciousness vs dialog & action so can be boring. 2.5-3 stars.
I have read many other of her mystery novels, like the justice series with Judge Wilma Carson and the series with Jordan Fox , Jess Kimble, and hunt for Jack Reacher. But the start of this series is the best so far. Searching for missing heirs is a delightful change from the typical mystery series. This was thoroughly researched and detailed.
I was expecting a bit more than I received given the high ratings from other readers. The connection between the characters was vague. Flint's survival was nothing short of miraculous. Parts of the book that could have been suspenseful were not taken advantage of. I sensed a bit of a cliff-hanger but, since we have to wait for the snow to melt, I'll never know if my instincts were correct.
