Free to Be Yourself: Enjoy Your True Nature in Christ

Rate this book
Many Christians try to act the way they think a Christian should, but discover that they simply can't maintain their performance. As a result, they either drop out or burn out. Free to Be Yourself reminds us that true faithfulness is based not on us, but in the reality that we become someone completely new the moment we become a Christian. The eternal life that Jesus came to give us is not just something we get when we die. Know the truth and choose to believe it and you can be the person you were made to be.

This 93 page easy to read book provides an excellent outline to understanding our identity in Christ. It's only in understanding who God says we are that we can then step out to become the person He created us to be.

In addition, it's important for us to understand God's character and identity. Often our Christian experience is held back by our perceptions and/or false beliefs as to who God really is. We might think of Him as this harsh slave driver or some distant God who isn't all that interested in who we are. He is a loving God who is crazy about each of us - hey. He created us for intimacy with Him.

Goss outlines that in understanding both who God is and our identity we are more inclined to become the person He has created us to be. Goss acknowledges that often we have the "head knowledge" about these elements, however, it's in the journey of that knowledge moving into our heart where we come alive to the truth. Personally, I've only recently discovered this myself by spending concentrated time studying the Word, recalling it through my day and praying about it with the Lord.

Even though dealing with important truths the book reads well as Goss uses everyday language and uses simple illustrations from his own and other peoples lives.

An excellent first step for anyone seeking more of Christ and frustrated with their current walk with Him.

This book had some good parts, I couldn't finish it though. The identity theology it promotes became more about achieving something for the reader than developing a closer and deeper relationship with God. It seemed to make attaining the True Nature the real goal. Much like the Spiritual Formation movement, which it would appear has some influence here, the end result isn't so much the goal as the process.
