It took everything to defeat the feared Natom Hilgresh… turns out, that was the easy part.
Now the clock is ticking for Clive to return to Far Reach and prepare for the second coming. Of course, it isn’t exactly a Sunday stroll. Navigating unforgiving terrain across the war-torn country of Kalabri, the vast armies of Destruction and Justice swarm the land, killing everyone in their path. But there is strength in numbers and by offering a safe haven to those displaced by the carnage, there’s a real chance of binding them together into a force dangerous enough to slaughter its way home. For if there is one thing you can say about war, if it doesn’t kill you, it will give you plenty of XP...
Strong follow-up to the first in the series. Lots of growths, evolutions… Intrigue and battle. I’m still waiting for him to settle down with that restaurant however!
plot is well thought out, characters are developed but it does not take up too much of the story from the main char. i would love to see more creative skills more utillity. and if hes going to be the god of feast then he needs his own garden and manifest perfect food from thin air. As far as land building goes i want to joel have a complete new series As thr God of building by the time he is done he should be able to build portals to new worlds and giant mecha golems aka magic gundam fighters. and the stage of the story needs to expand more aware of the globe and not just potectorate of the north.... protect the earth as well maybe? just some suggestions
It’s fascinating how the character keeps meeting and killing high and higher forms. But the author keeps finding excuses for it but at least it moves the story along well and isn’t boring. Great action and unique powers and combinations. Entertaining
An amazing sequel everything I wrote in my review about the first book in the series applies to this book as well. Amazing plot pace, some interesting twists and turns in the story. Solid world-building, a lot of action and character development.
Some great power levelling here and of course Clive acts like Clive giving us plenty of opportunities to see how a free for all of higher ranked levels fights the main Chef. Intriguing and antagonistic with some wonderful twists this is very engaging and well thought out progression and world building
I REALLY don't like reading about people being tortured, and we got a lot of that here. I understand it was to set something up, but there was far too much detail for the value it added to the story. It won't stop me reading the next one, but it annoyed me enough to drop it a tier.
If I had to sum up this novel in a single word, it would be Relentless. It's an endless slog of action from one cover to the next, and it's exhausting to read at times.
It delivers on all of the pros of the last book, but unfortunately, it delivers the same problems as well.
Clive continues to be a great protagonist who is progressing along his story at a breakneck pace and living up to the huge potential this series has promised for him. His relationships with the characters around him is another highlight here, not just with his core friend group from Earth, but his new friend group as well. The jokes are all landing, and the more serious and harder-hitting content is just as impactful.
However, with all that good, this book is crammed full of action, and at least half of it feels like it is there purely for the sake of there being action rather than in service to progressing the story. There are only so many times I can read full chapters of action where the only thing that impacts the overarching story is the outcome of that particular battle before I stop caring about anything but the result of that particular battle.
However, again, this book does more than enough to keep me reading. This is an entertaining series that delivers some impactful moments, but it gets in its own way sometimes with an over-reliance on action to keep the pages turning.
I took 1/2 a star away because of the stress I was under listening to this book. I put myself in the MC s place and there was some things that happened to him that got to me a little bit. I guess it would be more accurate to say that amount of stress the MC was under for such a prolonged period of time is what took its toll on me. Other that those periods of stress I really enjoyed this book. I really liked the characters. It is almost an impossible feat to make sure the characters stay exactly the same but continue to grow. How do I explain that better. The core of each character remained the same. Who they were as a person remained the same, but they grew into new versions of themselves based on the experiences they went through. I am not sure what else to say at this point about the book. Clive is still trying to figure out his new situation. What it means to have a seed of creation inside him. What it means to have followers. He has to deal with friends, enemies, enemies who he thought were friends. He has to deal with other gods and their political maneuvering. All the while trying to stay alive, keep his people alive, gain in power and just cook some nice food. I added this to my favorites list.
4.2? It was fun. I still enjoy the characters. The power ups are getting insane. Plot wise the gathering of neutrals feels almost creepy at this point. Less save the cat and more if you are going to die, might as well die for us.
Also for whatever reason I can't help but think of the logistics of food. I know this is a weird critique but wolves range hundreds of miles... how are all these guys fed?
The dialog technique is still good for two books though I think the repeating might become stale at some point with internal echoing the external and vice versa.
There was some very predictable plot turns and only one that was a little surprising but I'm still cynical about it in the long run.
Man Clive just can’t catch a break, Justice is after him, Darkness is being shady AF and he really should get a prison break achievement! Lol. Much like last time, there’s a ton of action, lots of sarcasm, and interesting interactions between Clive, Mal, and the various people and gods he encounters.
This book is the point where the author starts to reveal the soft-magic underbelly of the hard magic system. My own series is arrayed like this, but Kevin's approach is a pure joy to experience. It is going to be the standard for fantasy series going forward. It is a crime that this series hasn't insanely exploded.
Another fine story, artfully crafted by Kevin Sinclair. The same character's with further, well thought out, development. Thank you again, Mr. Sinclair.
I have completely and unashamedly enjoyed this series. Great! Characters, interesting, well written and lots of fun. OP main character always seems to find something to seriously challenge him. Recommended.
A fast-moving storyline that's hard to tear yourself away from, enjoyable twists and turns, interesting dialogues + a few quotes that I've kept in my collection of related quotes, Well done @Kewin.
This book is definitely not for young kids ears, way to many F-bombs. I loved how he dealt with the gods, treating them like people, even when they were a pain in the butt.
