Makoto and friends travel to the capital of Highlands, both to receive recognition for their help against the blight dragon and to deal with the Snake Cult. The find a city that looks peaceful, but is at the brink of collapse. Their strict class (and race) based hierarchies have created a perfect situation for the Snake Cult to take advantage of. To make matters worse, the high priestess of the Moon Goddess is running around and potentially causing problems.

Much like previous volumes, the story is light hearted fantasy with for the most part likeable characters and just enough of a twist to the world building and plot to keep it interesting. Getting to read a bit more about Makoto and the Hero of Light's past in Japan was also interesting, showed that Makoto is not exactly a reliable narrator at least not when it comes to himself.

The story still has the same flaws. Makoto's behaviour towards his harem is a bit inconsistent, one moment he is well aware of the feeling of the girls around him, the next he is oblivious. His jealous grumbling about the Hero of Light is grating since he really should (and is) aware he is in the same position if he showed even a little bit of courage. It feels a bit like the author is trying too hard to be funny here. The world has its twist, but is fairly generic, and how people consider Makoto's map view skill weak remains weird. Sure, Makoto might not realize it, but anybody with any knowledge on tactics would want to have the teenager on their team if just to direct people to the optimal places.

All in all, an entertaining light-hearted story and I am curious where things are going.

I continue to enjoy this series. It's fun to watch the protagonist rapidly oscillate between being basically incompetent and as powerful as anyone else in the world. Fun to see him problem-solving his way to power in the same way he would in an RPG. Fun to watch him regularly completely fail to understand how others perceive him and watch the fallout from such. Just good fun.

I read this as a member of j-novel.club as it was released in serial rather than the published e-book version.
