This series just gets better and better! I have read 13 books by Declan Finn in the last few months, and 1 prior to that. I have loved what I have read to date. And I have plans to read all that I can lay my hands on. Both the Saint Tommy and the White Ops series are greatly entertaining, and I cannot wait for the Pius trilogy of 5 books to be back in print. This is a great story in an always entertaining series. These books took me completely by surprise, and I find that I am surprised again with each new novel. They are masterfully written. The description of this story is:

“When Heathen terrorists try to slaughter him and his family while on vacation in Rome, NYPD Lieutenant Thomas Nolan must call upon every trick he knows to send the terrorist leader back to Hell.”

I believe that is the shortest description in the series. But after 8 books maybe the author and publisher knows that readers are hooked! This story is a little more straight forward and follows 1 main plot from beginning to end, unlike the previous two offerings that each had a lot going on. It starts with Tommy and his family on vacation and trying to leave Venice, they are delayed at the airport and this go downhill very fast! They soon realize that the man that Tommy and Jeremy and Lena have been hunting for a few years now is likely behind it. But it hints at a much bigger plot.

Tommy and Bokor end up teaming up again as partners,, the Boker working off his redemption. And this time they have Jeremy and Lena, XO, and others as back up. The battles this time include, a former Jesuit Doctor Roberto D’Almeida, a giant bronze statue, Vodyanoy, an armoured fire breathing bear, necrophage’s, bruxa and of course Bergolio!

This story is packed full of action. Sort of Like a Die Hard film with the whole family in on the action. From beginning to end the story races it leaves you wanting to jump into the next story right away. Finn again does an excellent job of weaving current events into this Catholic Action Horror novel. The characters are masterfully written. Wondering what will happen to them next leaves you hanging big time!

I have now read books from three different series by Finn and can say I enjoyed them all. The books in this series should be read in order as they are a continuous story. I can easily recommend this book and these stories to mature readers. Finn does a masterful job of blending faith and fiction and thereby crafting excellent stories! It is an intense story in a great series. One of the best instalments to date!

Note: This book is part of a series of reviews: 2022 Catholic Reading Plan!

Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. I don’t have much to confess. I’ve been too busy.

Tommy Nolan bares his soul to His Holiness the Bishop of Rome, and it's true: he HAS been busy. In the three years since the last book, this is his first chance to take his family out of town properly, on an Italian vacation, but his old foe Bergolio is waiting for him. Like a Tom Petty hero, Detective Nolan is stood up at the airport gates of hell, but he won't back down. He's only getting started.

Evil has come to the Holy See. Renegade priests and beautiful young witches, and demons from Tyre to Tír-na-nÓg, are assaulting the Vatican, and it will take all Tommy's gifts to keep himself and his family alive and get to the bottom of it. Bergolio's after the Soul Stone, the power of which is measured in TNT kilotons, if at all, and he still carries the Spear of Destiny. More destinies than one will be decided before the Nolans see New York again.

As a protestant I had some theological issues here and there with the workings of Finn's unapologetically Papist world, but Declan's a Catholic himself; I don't read his books for doctrinal nuance but because he writes a rip-roaring, scene-shredding masterpiece. He could write about Irish Folk-Music and there'd be explosions in there someplace, or a gunfight at least. (Come to think of it, he did!)

Most of the action is in Rome, which from my limited European travels feels very much like an old-boned Old World city. In Rome, one HAS TO visit the Colosseum, the Arch of Titus, and Trajan's Pillar at least: Tommy visits mayhem on all three, defending himself and his family from supernatural assaults.

Read Destiny (St. Tommy N.Y.P.D #9). You'll have a blast! (Kinda like that Quaint Italian Village™️ that Tommy's investigation leads him to, come to think of it.)

The demon Murphy must have a high place in the Hot Place. He seems to effortlessly put paid to any and all plans of mice and men, and particularly to Tommy Nolan's plans for a quiet family vacation. Lots of action, lots of angst, lots of mayhem, lots of weariness - there is just lots to this novel to be savoured. There are a couple of funny lines which only highlight the thrilling action - my favourite is: "I made a deal to be your partner, but I am not throwing myself on that grenade." This feels like "Die Hard" crossed with "National Lampoon's Vacation"; I don't know whether to cringe in sympathy or snicker with the mishaps. All I am sure about is that I could not put this book down until I was done, and now I have to re-read the series.

Really enjoy this series

Yes, I really like it, but it's not for everyone. The storyline is fascinating and characters and artifacts are fabulous. Always ready for the next St. Tommy.
