Kumaran Asan (കുമാരനാശാന്) (1873–1924), also known as Mahakavi Kumaran Asan (the prefix Mahakavi, awarded by Madras University in the year 1922, means "great poet" and the suffix Asan means "scholar" or "teacher"), was one of the triumvirate poets of Kerala, South India. He was also a philosopher, a social reformer and a disciple of Sree Narayana Guru.
Kumaran Asan initiated a revolution in Malayalam poetry in the first quarter of the 20th century, transforming it from the metaphysical to the lyrical. Deep moral and spiritual commitment is evident in Asan's poetry. His works are an eloquent testimony of poetic concentration and dramatic contextualisation.

അത്യയധികം ഉത്കൃഷ്ടമായ ഈ കാവ്യത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷാ/സങ്കേത പരമായ വൈശിഷ്ട്യമോ, വൈദഗ്ധ്യമോ തരിമ്പും മനസിലാക്കാനുള്ള ഭാഷാപാണ്ഡിത്യം എനിക്കില്ല.
എന്നാൽ ഇതിലെ ആശയപരമായും അർത്ഥപരമായും അനുഭവേദ്യമാകുന്ന ആഴവും പരപ്പും, തത്വചിന്താപരമായ ജീവിതവീക്ഷണവും, ധ്യാനാത്മകതയും ഏറ്റം ശ്രേഷ്ഠവും ആസ്വാദ്യകരവും ആയ ഒരു കാവ്യാനുഭവം വായനക്കാരന് സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നു.
പല്ലനയാറ്റിനെന്നല്ല , ഒരു മഹാസമുദ്രത്തിനും കെടുത്താനാവില്ല ഈ കാവ്യനാളത്തിന്റെ അത്ഭുതകാന്തി !
"ഹാ! പാപമോമൻമലരെ, ബത! നിന്റെ മേലും
ക്ഷേപിച്ചിതേ കരുണയറ്റ കരം കൃതാന്തൻ !
വ്യാപാരമേ ഹനനമാം വനവേടനുണ്ടോ
വ്യാപന്നമായ് കഴുകനെന്നു കപോതമെന്നും? "
"ആരോമലാം ഗുണഗണങ്ങളി ണങ്ങി, ദോഷ-
മോരാതുപദ്രവമൊന്നിനു ചെയ്തിടാതെ,
പാരം പരാത്ഥമിഹ വാണൊരു നിൻ ചരിത്ര-
മാരോർത്തു ഹൃത്തടമഴിഞ്ഞു കരഞ്ഞുപോകാ? "

Mahakavi Kumaran Asan's beautiful poem is about a fallen flower. Seeing the flower on the ground, the poet laments the fleeting nature of all things, of a life so short yet sparkling.
The poem comprises 43 stanzas of 4 lines each. In the first few stanzas, the poet laments the fall of the beautiful flower from the heights she occupied and mulls the ephemerality of life itself. Then he turns his attention to the flower's life - her qualities, her love affair with a bee, and ponders the beauty of the short yet sweet life that was lost. There are some beautiful stanzas that follow that are an ode to the fallen - how different forces of nature pay tribute to the fallen flower. The way Asan draws parallels between death rituals and nature's ways (e.g., spider web as the cloth wrapping the dead, dew drops as a garland etc.) is hauntingly beautiful. Then, as the reader gets swept away in grief, Asan makes a U-turn and talks about a greater re-birth and shines hope. Needless to say, this poem was a roller-coaster!
I found the reading a bit hard since I don't read malayalam regularly, and particularly have not done any poetry reading since high school. Thankfully, the version of the poem I read had footnotes with meanings of the more difficult words that helped me. When I still had issues, I turned to the dictionary or to my mother who did not need such aids to know the meanings of Asan's words!
I'd say despite these difficulties, it was an intensely enjoyable read. Asan's imagination that shines through in some of the stanzas just took my breath away. It is clear why he is a "Mahakavi"! I look forward to reading more of Asan's works in the future.
