Emme is tasked with getting rid of the king, but kings are not an easy target, and this one is bent on purging his lands of pirates. As Emme’s job becomes increasingly dangerous, she learns to survive the pirate way—cunning and merciless—while consoling herself with one fact: she’s just doing what it takes to get home.
But when Emme mistakenly takes out the wrong man, not even the protective pirate captain can save her from the consequences. In a string of betrayals, one thing is certain. You can never trust a pirate.
Best-selling author of Oathbound and Mortal Queens from Enclave Publishing.
Victoria McCombs is the author of The Storyteller’s Series, The Royal Rose Chronicles, and the fae dynasty duology, with hopefully many more to come. She survives on hazelnut coffee, 20-minute naps, and a healthy fear of her deadlines, all while raising four wildlings with her husband in Omaha, Nebraska.
High stakes, swashbuckling adventure, twists that made me gasp out loud, Soft™ romance, mermaids, assassination plots, cursed islands, this was exactly what I hoped it would be and I had so much fun reading it. 🙌 Four stars from me!
The last quarter of this book had me REELING. Everything I could hope for in a swashbuckling, seafaring adventure! Such a fantastic sequel to OATHBOUND and I cannot wait for the last book!
I had to do the audiobooks for this trilogy, and I went from one to the next so quickly that I do not really remember what elements were in Silver Bounty versus the next book, Savage Bred. However, I do know that this one has a cliffhanger ending, so I recommend having Savage Bred queued up! See my review of the first and third books here:
Silver Bounty is the second book in The Royal Rose Chronicles. Picking up shortly after the end of Oathbound (book 1), the reader once again finds the characters in a series of high-seas high-stakes adventures!
I loved Oathbound, so I wasn’t sure how Silver Bounty would compare—could the second book be as good as the first? YES! I found the story and characters to be just as compelling!
I enjoy reading various character POVs. Seeing things from the perspective of different characters helps me get into the character’s mind and understand their motivations better. Silver Bounty is mostly written from Emme’s and Arn’s perspectives, but there are a few chapters from 2 or 3 other POVs as well.
The various magics of the world are truly fascinating. Oathbinding, which we learned about in the first book, is just one example. I like that much more of this fantasy world’s magic is explored in Silver Bounty.
Once I reached the last 20% I didn’t want to stop reading. So I didn’t!!!
Such a good ending. The main plot points of Silver Bounty are basically resolved, but we’re also given a taste of what’s to come in book three.
I’m SOOOO ready for book three!
This is definitely a YA Fantasy story. The main characters are pirates. There’s killing (but not graphic), kidnapping, threats, and the like. Maybe a few mentions of alcohol use. And a little romance with a few sweet kisses. I’d recommend for teens (14+) and adult readers.
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 stars)
I received an ebook ARC of Silver Bounty from the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my honest thoughts about this book.
Silver Bounty was another fun installment in this exciting pirate adventure series. Favorite characters are included, along with new POVs. My heart went out to Emme in this one, I love her bravery and strength even when she’s not at her best. Arn is also trying to be a “better” pirate by making wiser decisions for Emme. I like how the romance isn’t physical or over running the story, it’s just there within the pages and not a focal point. Can’t say too much more without spoiling it, but I will say the last 30 % was fantastic. Lots of high stakes action and excitement- setting up book 3 perfectly. Looking forward to seeing how it all on unfolds. Would Recommend !
Mini review: I loved this author’s “Fae Dynasty” duology so much that I needed more of her books. I’ve been loving this series so much! It’s written so well and I love all of the twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. There’s plenty of action and excitement. I love Emme and Arn and to see how they’ve changed over the series is wonderful. There’s a great cast of side characters as well. I’m so excited to see how Emme and Arn will end up and if they can beat the odds. I need the next book now! This was one of my favorite reads of last month.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
⚠️ I give this book a PG rating. Content: there’s a fortune teller; people curse, but the words aren’t actually written; characters go to a tavern and drink alcohol; someone is drunk; talk of someone being a human sacrifice; murder, death and gore; there’s a witch-like character and there’s magic and curses throughout the book.
Don’t ask me how I’m smitten with the softest pirates ever, but apparently I’m trying to balance all of the dark and bloody fantasies I’m usually reading.
This was a good middle book that carried the plot well. I liked the direction of the story and that it was multi-POV. The romance is still the sweetest and just makes you smile. There’s some good twists and I was genuinely curious where things were going to go.
I’m definitely interested in the next book and want to know how things conclude. I enjoy these characters and the high seas adventures. You never know quite who’s good and who’s bad.
Overall audience notes: - YA Fantasy - Language: none - Romance: kisses - Violence: low - Trigger/Content Warnings: physical altercations, loss of life
The Royal Rose Chronicles continues with book two, Silver Bounty. All of our favorites (and not so favorite) characters are back with a few newcomers. Stakes are still higher than ever with Emme’s illness and oath binding, Admiral Bones’s mysterious son calling in his dead father’s debtors, and the king beginning to wage war against all pirates.
Adventure and betrayal still rule the seas in this YA fantasy. I love this series and all the great characters. Poor Emme and Arn are thrust together time after time only to be torn apart again. I’m rooting for their happily ever after.
This is a clean book for any reader regardless of age. It is pirates, so there are instances of mild violence but nothing described in depth or explicit. No language. PG in all aspects.
Book three is coming soon so catch up on this swashbuckling adventure.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC to read and review.
4.5 stars
CWs: death, imprisonment, drowning, kidnapping
This was a wild ride and I really enjoyed reading it. I’m dying to find out what happens next especially after the betrayals and revelations at the end. The pacing was really good in this one. The main plot moved well, and the subplots helped the main plot but in a way that didn’t feel obvious. I enjoyed the addition of Emric’s POV along with Emme’s and Arn’s. We also got Ontario’s POV occasionally. The dynamics of character relationships have been altered so much after the events of book one, and I really liked seeing them change more in this book. New secrets come to light, and there is so much betrayal. The characters’ emotions come across really well, and I was almost in tears near the end.
I NEED THE THIRD BOOK... I need this to end happy.
So much betrayal and craziness. And the reveals. My goodness!
Emme is running out of time fast and in order to live she needs to get the king's head and take it to a mermaid before she is too weak to get her very needed cure. But tensions are high and Arn is no longer captain. She just has to hope Ontario will help save her...
Silver Bounty took everything that made Oathbound a fun read, and gave us more of that. Since this is the second book in the series, it doesn’t have to bother with establishing everything. We already know the basics of these characters and the world. Which means that the story never slows down. Something that I really enjoyed. It never got dull or boring, although some parts could have been fleshed out a bit more. I also enjoyed the multiple povs, which is a bit unexpected for me. But here it just works.
Now, if you read this book, you will feel the whole range of mentions - from happy to slightly infuriated. I laughed, I smiled, and I also screamed internally. Like I know this is a story about pirates, but man after a while I just wanted to yeet the back-stabbing, two faced pricks into the sea. I know they’re there for story purposes and to add drama, but I didn’t like them! I wanted them away from my precious pirates. They deserve the world, and I just want to see them happy!
That ending had me in a choke hold. Because I’m not a fan of cliffhangers, especially not ones that ends on a note of miscommunication and hurt - especially when it’s their fault. I don’t know how I will be able to wait another year to know what will happen next to them.
If you like action-packed fantasy and/or pirate book you need to read this book. You will not regret it. ---- Thank you to Book of Matches Media and Victoria McCombs for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I loved it! Such a great sequel with all the previous piratey-ness and more. Victoria’s descriptions are lovely; I can taste the sea air. If you read Oathbound, you need this sequel.
◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦
⮞ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 ⮜ I've enjoyed big time the encounter with the past characters from The Royal Rose Chronicles and in this book, you'll also encounter some new ones that are definitely driving the story in so many directions. I loved seeing Emme becoming stronger and more powerful everyday even tho her body was failing her. Arn has also grown so much more in this story and loved his determination and how he would do everything for Emme.
⮞ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⮜ As usual, I'm a sucker for the pirate world and its customs. This time the story was half on land and half on the seas and you're in for a beautiful description of their world and so much adventure.
⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜ I loved the unconventional love between Emric and Coral and I so hope we'll get more of that in the next book because they have to be a thing. The mermworld is beautiful and definitely makes you want to live in it. I loved Arn's sacrifices towards Emme and how he was all in, it legit made me feel that Arn is the only one who actually loves Emme for what she is - the other people were just so fickle, including her own brother, which kind of made me sad. There's definitely a bit plot twist in this story that I didn't see it coming - she's definitely a strong character and I have no idea what she will do next because she's ruthless lol. The scene with the read, made me crave bread, it was so delicious - I love when books have food scenes in them lol. As usual, this was such a great read about pirates, mermaids, and lots of ups and downs, betrayals, and curses and the ending was amazing. Can't wait to see what's up next.
⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜ There is nothing smutty in the book. The romance is very clean, there might be some harsher subjects like fighting, killing, or blood since it's a book about pirates but I didn't find it being triggering or having triggering subjects.
I didn’t super love this book. I wanted to, so I shall explain. Keeping things spoiler-free, as always!
The first book had a lot of promise and I enjoyed the adventure. There were a few red flags that worried me in it, like the meandering storyline, but I was thinking you know it’s a first book in a fantasy series that’s just how it goes and we’ll get more answers in book two.
However, I feel like this book meandered even more. For as many answers as we got, we got three more twists or cryptic secrets.
What I liked.
-Ontario. He’s such an interesting character and I found myself caring about him and his storyline way more than the MMC or FMC. He’s got an odd personality but I think it’s just because we don’t get much from him, only a chapter or two.
-Adventure. This book is nothing if not a whole lot of adventure. I love pirate books and this one delivers. The idea of the island prison was so cool and I’m glad we got to experience it!
-Emme. I loved her growth and her ability to stand up for herself regardless of the circumstances and/or the people around her.
What I didn’t like.
-Layout. The book focused mainly on character development and setting everything up until about 70%, when the synopsis from the back cover finally comes to life. I guess I just expected it to happen quicker since it was part of the description of the book.
-Too many twists. There were so many twists that I couldn’t keep them straight, and it seemed like rather than adding to the story they were there for dramatic effect.
-Convenience. This one truly bothered me the most and is the main reason I’m rating the book lower. I’m all for intricate plots and how everything connects, but every plot point and connection in this book was so incredibly convenient.
Overall, this book was fun. I think if you enjoy adventure over character development that you’ll enjoy this series.
“I’m already corrupt, love. Let me be the darkness for you, while you remain my light.”
YES. okay loved this one almost as much as I did the first (if not more). I really liked meeting more characters and getting more POVs and seeing a bit more of this world. I'm still loving this world-building and I cannot *wait* to see where the next book goes!
“I want to beg you to stay. I’m constantly thinking of how I can convince you to make a home here."
so characters: like I said, I love Emme and Arn's character development and I am very invested in seeing where McCombs takes their story next. The new POVs that were added and the characters that were introduced created extra perspectives of this world that I really enjoyed reading about (still not over a couple of those character reveals bc AAHHH).
the story itself had me hooked from start to finish and all of the plot twists + reveals had me on the edge of my seat. AND THEN THE ENDING. oh my gosh what an ending. if anyone else has already finished and want to discuss what happened - feel free to reach out.
overall: a solid ten out of ten. I loved the writing, the pacing was perfect, the character development + world building was incredible and I definitely recommend this series! you should check out The Royal Rose Chronicles if you're in the mood for a YA pirate adventure with sword fights, plot twists, a little bit of a friends to more romance and strong FMCs.
“I’m terrified you’re one storm away from abandoning me.”
《I hope you get the chance to ask again, Arn. And I'll say yes when I know that you're asking for no other reason than that you love me.》
◇emme: death follows her ◇arn: he's a pirate ◇emric: nothing a brother won't do
I seldom say this, but I enjoyed Silver Bounty more than the first book, Oathbound. The disasters following disasters and plot twists make for a masterful second act of the Royal Rose Chronicles.
Content: Battle violence, some murder Mild romance (some kissing).
4.5 I have been searching for a good pirate story for awhile and I found it in this. It is delightful, not because it portrays a unique take on a pirate tale, but because it wonderfully provides everything needed in a pirate story while being clean. This book kept me up at night and on the edge of my seat.
I took this book with me on our vacation to Gloucester Massachusetts where we also took a whale watching tour. Which made this book feel so alive! Even though Emme doesn't encounter a whale, having the salty air blowing on my own face as we ventured out into the ocean connected me to the story just a little bit more.
This story is book #2 of the Oathbound (Royal Rose Chronicle) series. So, I can't talk much about this without giving spoilers to book one. However, if you like pirates, found family, betrayal, and love then I highly recommend this book!
It's a clean story with no language and no spicy scenes, but they're pirates. So, there is some stabbing, lying, and death.
“If it weren’t for the piercing cold, the bitter wind, and the wetness in my boots, this would be an enjoyable sail.” —Arn
I’m trying to resist calling the second book in the Royal Rose Chronicles “swashbuckling” because, well, that’s what you’re supposed to say about a pirate book. However, I did enjoy every minute of the continuation of this exciting nautical fantasy! Better than the first, I’d say.

Great job @victoria_mccombs for not only setting the stage for book 3, but for creating a stand-alone worthy adventure!
Thank you @enclavepublishing for sending me an ebook ARC of Silver Bounty.
There’s a high bounty not only on the pirates, but on the king’s head. And, it just so happens that his head is the answer to curing Emme’s sickness. Arn’s only desire is to keep her alive, whatever the cost. Together, Emme, Arn, and the rest of the crew on the Royal Rose team up with unlikely allies to deliver the head of the king. And with their backs turned, new enemies arise, daggers in hand.
So, I finished Oathbound (book 1) in four days, and I finished this book in three days! I exclusively listened to it because I’m waiting for the paperback version to be released (I used an image from google for the photo). And wow. The twists, the turns, the continual betrayal that comes with being a pirate, and the heartache of falling in love with morally grey characters — just wow. The amount of times my mouth hung in shock is countless. It feels like Arn and Emme can’t catch a break, and I desperately just want them to be able to be together. I’m absolutely pre-ordering the next book, Savage Bred. August can’t come soon enough.
Like I said in my review of the first book, this was very pirate-y! It's not my favorite series ever, but I'm invested in the story enough that I want to read the entire trilogy. It's a good, adventurous, summer read, so I picked up this second book. The strength of this story is the characters. Emme, Arn, and Emeric are so different and interesting and I enjoy seeing each of their perspectives. Emeric might have been my favorite character in this book, with Emme as a close second. They were really grappling with their morals in this book and fighting against the expectations of the pirate life. They showed mercy when ruthlessness was expected, and they showed love even when it was hard, often to the point of being self-sacrificial.
I really can't detail too much of what happened in this book since it is a sequel and a lot of things would spoil the first book. So, let's just say that it pulled me in even more than I expected it to. I enjoyed the many surprises and twists and turns. The ending was a cliffhanger, but it was an exciting one and I'm looking forward to reading the third book to find out how all of this resolves!
Content Advisory: If you were okay with the content in the first book, then this book is on the same level of intensity in all areas of content. Once again, I would say that if you are okay with watching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, then you'll be okay with this series.
Spiritual/Magic: Once again, there was no overt Christian spiritual content in this story, though there is some grappling with the morality of the pirate lifestyle. Emme especially realizes she can't do several immoral things she thought she might be forced to do, and she's rewarded for deciding to take a different path.
The world of this story is a fanciful one and there are fantasy elements. Characters believe in Fates, gods, and/or some of them aren't sure what they believe. A certain sea king is spoken of almost as if he's god-like and has the ability to heal ilnesses that can't be healed with anything but magic.
There's talk of how a curse can be broken if someone who loves the curse person willingly spills enough blood for the cursed person to rinse their hands in. However, this is never actually done.
Emme encounters a "fortune teller". At first, Emme tries to avoid the woman, but the woman grabs her and tells her fortune anyway.
There are passing mentions of witches. Someone who calls herself a "caster" is able to lift curse/illness. There's no speaking of spells or anything like that, she just states that Emme is free of her illness because Emme showed compassion for someone who didn't deserve it.
In the previous book, Emme encountered what she believed to be her mother's ghost, but in this book we learn that and the so-called ghost was a false illusion.
A mermaid's magic scale necklaces are able to give two humans mermaid tails and the ability to breathe underwater.
A magical island steals one memory from the people who escape it.
Violence: There are quite a few acts of violence throughout the book, enough so that I didn't keep an exhaustive list. People fight and get injured frequently, by swords and pistols. Sometimes people are killed. Threats of violence are even more frequent. One person is even accidentally killed by a horse. (No description. The horse kicks him and there's mention of blood on clothes, but the body is not described any more than that.) However, as someone who is sensitive to graphic violence, I will say that, while some of the violence in this book is intense, none of it triggered an anxiety reaction in me because it's not described to an extreme. All violent acts are handled by stating that the action happened, occasionally stating that there was some blood, but then there is no further graphic description.
One instance of violence that was sudden, unexpected, and therefore a bit more intense than the rest is when a corrupt leader turns on her own and murders him via beheading. The beheading is not described in detail. Emmy sees the sword swing and hears a disturbing noise, then the head is on the floor. There's a brief mention of blood, but the body and the head itself are not described. There are several mentions of a bloody bag with the head in it, though.
Sexual: Emme and Arn's romance continues and it remains sweet, not spicy. Arn stays by Emme's side throughout her illness, never giving up on her even when she truly believes she's going to die. I honestly don't remember them kissing more than a couple of times, and it was only briefly described, but I was listening on audio, so please forgive me if my memory is faulty on the number of kisses. Emeric also has a love interest. They kiss at least once and it's only moderately described. Their romance also remains sweet, and self-sacrificial.
Other: Pirates act like pirates throughout. They drink, fight, and steal, kill and threaten, lie, and sometimes betray each other. None of this is portrayed as a good thing and is showed as being hurtful. One pirate character in particular is a mother, but she's not a very good mother and really doesn't have any genuine love for her own children. She'll only be proud of them if the act like vicious pirates like her and is disappointed that neither of them want to act like that. The two of them have to accept that making their mother proud is not a good thing, and they make the right choice to stick to their morals instead.
Dressed in his old uniform, Arn Mangelo masquerades as a naval officer captured by pirates. It is a dangerous plan; the king is out to destroy all pirates – especially turncoats like himself – and a rift has developed between himself and the man posing as his captor. Not to mention the fact that some of the crew blame Arn for the slaughter of half their comrades. Or that a debt is coming due and the form of that retribution may be more dear than he can afford. The primary reason he participates in this risky venture (to trick other imprisoned officers into revealing the king’s whereabouts) is to save the love of his life, Emme.
Time is not her friend. They both know this. Emme is bound by an oath and she is sick – both will kill her if they do not acquire the healing tonic and she fails to deliver on her promise. She loves Arn, but is he willing to forego the sea and live on land for her? This is but one question she confronts during their voyage, for she also deals with loss and the grief that accompanies it. Another is whether she dare trust the man Arn brings back to the ship (an acquaintance whom no one trusts but who claims to have access to the king). And then there’s the old fortune teller who predicts that Emme will be a catalyst – one that brings death to many – whether she lives or dies.
Stabbed by the Nightlock Thief and believed to be dead, Emric discovers the opposite is true. Instead, he’s in limbo on a cursed island that refuses to release those relegated to spend eternity there. The island is not a solitary prison; another is imprisoned here too, but she is heartless and single-minded. She possesses one chance to seek help, but refuses to use it. Emric, however, has no such qualms. When his companion is otherwise occupied, he summons the mermaid whom he loves. Coral agrees to help, but in doing so, each prisoner loses something precious because the island is reticent to release its prisoners. Is Emric willing to make such a sacrifice?
Silver Bounty is the second book in The Royal Rose Chronicles. Although readers new to the series need not have read the first to follow this story, they may be less invested in the characters. All readers will need to decipher some sentences to figure out how they should read (examples: “blood with be spilled” instead of “blood will be spilled” (25) or “into my pocked” rather than “into my pocket” (248).) There are enough that some readers may become annoyed.
Love and betrayal are key themes here, as is the fact that all actions, regardless of how large or small, have consequences. And those outcomes are rarely what the characters or the readers expect – earmarks of a dexterous weaver of tales. Clues abound for the many twists and surprises that occur. But at no time does the author betray the reader; each revelation makes sense and heightens the stakes because McCombs lays the necessary groundwork.
She also does well eliciting readers’ emotions and in portraying Emme’s illness. Beware, though, this is a tale that incorporates violence, including what the pirates (and others) seek from the king. There are villains to loathe and heroes to like and others who fall somewhere in between. All story threads are satisfactorily resolved, yet there are compelling kernels in the conclusion that entice readers to venture into book three.
Emme is dangerous losing her battle to survive as her illness runs throughout her body. Yet all she thinks about is finding her brother. It is strange that she doesn’t remember that her brother drowned. When a strange older woman boarded the ship I felt shivers down my spine. She wanted to tell Emme her future, but Emme wanted nothing to do with it. As she helps her down the plank a touch sends the woman into a fit of wailing. What did she see when she touched Emme’s hand? Darkness seemed to overtake Emme in that moment as death was near either by her own hands or by someone else. The story just got intense everyone.
I loved the twists in the story that will surprise many. There are some out there that still believe they can save Emme. The determination to rescue Emme is not without sacrifice and I couldn’t wait to see where this adventure would take us. The pirates are plenty as is evil that lurks in the sea. Power is evident as the guiding force behind the wrath of one. The author dies su h a good job of making the characters real that I found myself on the ship as we sailed to the unknown.
Arn is the character that I cheer for as he seeks to save Emme. He will do anything to protect her but would he give up his life as a pirate for her? Arn is someone you want on your side, His loyalty is strong and tells Emme he would die for her. He awaits the time where he comes face to face with the king. You can feel the anger inside Arn as he thinks about how evil the king is.
The part about an island that no one can escape from is eerie. You can try to escape but it brings you back and shows you that you have no hope of escaping. There may be one way to escape for this person but it would cost them dearly. The island doesn’t like to lose someone and the consequences if you do find a way off the island is unforgiving. What would you do if you could escape a prison but it could take a favorite memory, your speech, or even years from your life?
The story is filled with deceit, secrets and betrayals that I had a problem deciding who to trust. Emme must make a hard decision to save herself. Will it be her mother’s freedom or her own? As ruthless as Emme’s mother is, Emme still loves her. What decision will she make? As the ending draws near, I hoped the author would give us closure. But once again the author has left a cliffhanger and I must ask how long do I wait to find out if Emme survives? Does her mother survive? Will Emme’s brother be found alive? Does Arn stay with Emme or will he choose the pirate life?
I received a copy 9f this book fromCelebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
This is the second book of the trilogy so of course the writing is still amazing and the narrator just as fantastic as the first book. You get several more perspectives in this book than the last which I loved! So many complex characters with their own motivations and their own agendas. So many betrayals and heart break and secrets in this book. But also lots of love and selfless sacrifice too. Let’s just say it is an emotional roller coaster. I think I enjoyed the first book more but this was a good continuation of the story and a great set up for the finally! I think this book has slight middle book syndrome where not a ton happens, but it makes me stoked for the next book! Reading this book you just fall in love with the characters even more. Even with all their imperfections and mistakes. So many favorite characters!!
SPOILERS and book notes: Fortune tellers don’t predict the future, they can shape the future with what they “predict” or tell the person. They are dangerous and can influence people with what they say. Arn loves Emme above all else! He loves her more than his ship or the sea. Unlike her mother. Their love is actually a very beautiful thing. Also Emrick and his mermaid coral have the best love too. It’s like pirates of the carrabean 4. Super cool he transformed to mermaid tale! Mermaid tales have pockets haha. I love that Arns goal is to make Emme smile. Landon’s character is so intriguing. Haha you never know whose side he is on! Like is he betraying us? Or helping us? He keeps me on my toes ha. And in this book we get his perspective too! It’s just so interesting who is the “villain” in these books bc everyone ,with the exception of Emme, has ulterior selfish pirate motives! Haha and it’s interesting that we get so many perspective in this book so you end up liking a lot of the morally gray characters! Awww! I can’t believe how many betrayals this book has!! Ontario and Landan and Tess and Arabella!! At least we know that enrick and Arn and Emme are faithful and consistent to each other ha. Hopefully this new mysterious character Raven will be good too. She is a leader of a group of kids to help them find homes. What a noble cause! Oh my Emrick chose memory of his sister over his love coral bc he thinks he will fall in love with her at first sight again. I am bawling. He gave up his love!!! Raven is calipso??? Who is that again!!!!???? A sea goddess?? A princess!!! Oh man and Arn and landen got sold to her dad!!! Everything is wrong and now the book is over and I am crying.
Thank you Book of Matches Media for an advance copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
Let me start out by saying....I THOUGHT THIS WAS A DUOLOGY.
Not that I am complaining about this being a longer series but....there was a lot of unresolved plot points nearing the end of the book and my anxiety was HIGH trying to figure out how everything was going to be "resolved" in the last 10% of the book. But then it ended and like.....okay guess this is not a duology.
Anyway, I really loved Oathbound and the high stakes pirate adventure, so I was excited to dive into this one! I feel like this book doesn't have much action compared to the first, and while there is some resolution to the cliffhangers from the first, this book definitely feels like a segue to book three.
There's a good amount of high seas travels and definitely a lot of secrets and betrayals in this book, but it also feels like the story is being dragged out for the sake of making a longer series. I am excited for book three, but as of right now I think that this story could have been condensed into a duology.
Overall, to avoid any spoilers, I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I loved book one. I enjoy the adventure aspect, and how twisty the story can be, and the author has some great writing. The story does feel like it is being dragged out, but all the elements of the story work together, so it is not too much of a downside. I am interested in seeing where book three goes from here, and I hope it comes out soon! Content warnings: kidnapping, violence, death, terminal illness, gun violence
Silver Bounty is book two in Royal Rose Chronicles that is written by Victoria McCombs. I have read book one - and it was nice to see our cast of characters again. Silver Bounty is a young adult fantasy book that is geared towards grades 8-12. My 11 year old son and I read this together. He reads at a higher level. We both enjoyed it very much. He is more into the fantasy genre then I am, but we had a good discussion after reading. We both have a love of pirates.
We especially loved that the book offers multiple POV for the characters. It helps to get the story from that characters perspective. It helps to give a bigger view of the story. We really liked Emme and Arn's characters - they are well developed and have grown with the second book. Emme has an illness that she has been battling - and it's not going well. She also wants to find her brother, but he has drowned. It was like she could not grasp that.
Arn wants so desperately to save Emme. But does that include giving up the pirate life? There are some battles and pirate things - but they are not graphic or gory. There are a lot of twists in this story.
My son and I are looking forward to reading more from this author. She has created a wonderful storyline that you will be drawn into within the first few pages.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this story - all thoughts are my own.
Emme and Arn are trying to figure out a way to kill the King to save her life. Arn is chafing about being a normal seaman instead of the captain now and is trying to figure out how to save Emme and get himself a ship. Meanwhile, Emme dreams of leaving the sea and retiring on a sheep farm. Is there a future for them if she can be cured? Meanwhile, Emric is marooned on a magical island with his mother, the ruthless Pirate Arabella. The island keeps them alive, but also keeps them stuck. They are both wracking their brains of how to escape this magical prison.
Victoria McCombs does something unusual for a pirate tale, she doesn't glamorize the life. These pirates are brutal, ruthless, and not trustworthy. It is a very tenuous life, and while Emme sees that, Arn is still a bit enamored with it, and Arabella thrives on it. Add in the ability to use magic for good and evil, and this series is a study in character and asks how far you'd go to save yourself and those you love.

Silver Bounty is the second book in Victoria McCombs' The Royal Rose Chronicles. As always with books in a series, I wish for a “previously in…” section or a list of characters and a bit of their history in the series at the start of the book to refresh my memory of what I read previously. When reading series books as they launch it can be difficult to remember previous plot points and characters. Unfortunately, Silver Bounty did not have such a feature. It took me several chapters to remember what had happened previously. The author did recount some previous plot points in telling this new story, but for me it would have been nice to be reminded before I started reading. I recommend that readers new to the series read Oathbound, the first book in The Royal Rose Chronicles before reading Silver Bounty. Enemies become friends, or do they? The relationship between Arn and Emme grows. I look forward to reading the next book in The Royal Rose Chronicles. McCombs does include some surprises in Silver Bounty which were hinted at in Oathbound but not revealed as well as other surprises I didn’t see coming. Middle schoolers and above who enjoy pirate fantasy will enjoy Silver Bounty and Oathbound making it a great addition to a K-12 Christian school library. I received a complimentary copy of Silver Bounty. This is my honest review.
As in Oathbound, twists, turns, and deception abound. Every character has things they're not telling the rest of the crew, and even secrets that the reader doesn't get to know.
The multiple POVs were balanced well, and the plot was paced nicely. The character development was done well. As in Oathbound, McCombs writes in a disability representation by giving Emme an illness based on a real disability Victoria herself has. Emme's struggle with her illness was touching, and McCombs wrote it well.
This isn't so much a quibble with the book, but I wish that the back cover blurb had been written a little differently. Emme doesn't take out the wrong man until around 2/3 of the way through the book. Knowing that she was going to mess up the assassination going into the book dissipated some of the tension that could have been there if the reader hadn't known that information going into the book.
Silver Bounty is another pirate adventure with plenty of lies and twists along the way.
