Risdaverse #7

When She's Lonely

Rate this book
Everyone says humans are safe on Risda III.

Yeah, right.

I was taken from Earth years ago and I’ve learned one thing - a flawed human is a dead human. So I keep my flaws to myself, and I focus on running my farm.

At least, I try to. But when I (accidentally) burn the barn down, one of the local officials shows up to help me put it out. And when Khex learns my secrets, he decides that he’ll keep them…

If I’ll go out on a date with him.

Oh, this is going to end badly.

I just love this series!!

3.5 Sweet Blue Aliens, but they don't live on Ice Planet Stars. 🤪🤣

This was another almost too sweet installment of the Risdaverse series. Ashley is considered a loud and unfriendly human by the Custodians in Port. What they don't know is that she's hearing impaired. She's scared to tell anyone because flawed slaves have no use and if something happens and she ends up a slave again, she doesn't want her secret out. It was so heartbreaking.

Then comes Khex who has very little patience or care for Ashley, until one of his coworkers reminds him that these ladies might manifest issues from their abuse in different ways. He takes the time to really pay attention and realizes Ashley's secret. He promises her he will keep it and goes about helping her and in the process melted my heart. Khex was so sweet and supportive, and showed Ashley she had worth and was lovable, disability or not.

I wished there was a little more spiciness in this one, but I still loved it.

A textbook example of what Queen Ruby excels at - sweet, funny, smutty scifi romance. I love the Risdaverse and am always excited to get back there. I thought Ashley's motivation was compelling and it was lovely seeing a friends to lovers romance in a speculative setting. I know we get a Ruby book every month but... it's still not enough!! 👻

➕ What I liked :

Disability rep. (Heroine is hearing impaired.)

Some sweet moments/parts.

➖ What I disliked :

Dragged a little bit.

Some parts were somewhat boring.

The heroine had some moments when she was TSTL or/and made decisions that made little or no sense and was at times a little reckless.

Too short and rushed.

Disjointed.

Repetitive.

Not enough relationship development.
(Lacking chemistry/romantic build up.)

Over the top miscommunication/misunderstandings.

How obvious it was for anyone (on Risda III or/and Praxii Minor/Praxii) that was just a little bit attentive/observant to notice the heroine was hearing impaired.

****Note to self: Do Not re-read this book again.****

This was so good 😮
I needed to know Khex's story ever since I haphazardly (because my reading-order of the risdaverse is totally out of whack and chaotic) came across his character for the first time (first time for me anyway) in When She's Pregnant (a novella further down the line). I'm beyond pleased that this book was a total banger. Friends to lovers and so so sweet. Hilarious in places too - especially those comm messages from Khex using a terrible translation code (code? app? module?). Khex and Ashley ugh 💖 this is a book I want to keep 😘
And the MCs have an actual conversation in some parts of the book! Lol my standards slip with novellas, so that is easily a bigger deal than it would be otherwise.

Khex is a port custodian (a government position as a sort of overseer and helper of human colonists on a farming planet housing human refugees). He's friendly and jovial and well received by everyone but one pesky, surely, stubborn colonist - Ashley. Ashley is a farmer with a stressful secret and it's made her life miserable. These two butt heads constantly.. but one fine morning Khex discovers what she's been hiding all this time and these two strike up an unlikely, deep, trust-filled friendship that will have you rooting for them with your heart in your throat. Probably the best risdaverse story I've come across. Fat recommend. Give this man 2 tails.

Friends to lovers novella. Loved both of the leads but they took their sweet time confessing stuff. Plus this was a #ownvoices book which was pretty cool.

When She’s Lonely is a novella part of Ruby Dixon’s Risdaverse series, sci-fi/alien romances set on a farming planet. This one is a friends to lovers with disability rep (heroine is hard of hearing). I adored this one!

Ashley is a misunderstood human on the farming planet Risda III. The others on the planet assume she doesn’t pay attention, ignores everyone, is not willing to learn, and is purposefully oblivious. Little do they know she’s keeping a secret! Ashley has hearing loss but her hearing aids she had on earth were stolen from her and she’s struggling to understand others on Risda III. She’s kept her hearing loss a secret and others on the planet are frustrated and don’t get her. Her hearing loss has meant she didn’t completely get all the instructions for her new farming equipment and it breaks down…and then she burns her barn down. Khex is a local custodian who reluctantly has to come help her and then quickly realizes her secret. He wants to help her out and decides he’ll take her out on dates to help keep her secret and they quickly become friends!

This one was really sweet and so fun! I loved the caretaking and them becoming friends first. This story has own voices because the author wanted to share a story of a heroine who is hearing-impaired and wears hearing aids like she does (shared in the author’s note). The audiobook is included with When She’s Ready’s audiobook on hoopla.

Ruby You’ve done it again

Every time I read a Ruby Dixon story I know this was on the sweeter side. But I love a good enemies to friends to lovers book. This was an amazing slow burn and when they finally fall for one another it is worth it. I’ve been invested in this series since the very beginning and I cannot wait for more!!

4 stars. I love the Risdaverse series, and this book was a nice addition. The heroine is hard of hearing and just reading about all the hardships she’s had to suffer made me tear up a little. Maybe I’m overly hormonal today, because I don’t usually cry quite so easily. Also, I kinda hated the hero at the start, he was a major jerk to the heroine. But thankfully, he was redeemable and quickly grew on me. For such a short story, this also had some nice slow-burn, and a sweet HEA ending.

Safe; no virgins, no om/ow drama, no cheating. I do have a minor complaint about the safety - and that’s when the hero goes downtown on the heroine the first time, he knows exactly what he’s doing and she thinks about how he must have done it before because he knows *just* what to do. It’s just such bad timing to be reminded of his past with OW (he had hooked up on occasion with random human women while doing his job). Major turn off at that moment for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TW: Like most of the Risdaverse books, the heroine was raped in the past

I love Ruby and love the Risdaverse, this one just wasn’t for me. It was pretty short and there wasn’t enough relationship development for me to care about either of them.

3.5 adorable. This was a miscommunication trope that didn’t get annoying. Maybe because it was short and, well…made sense. Not only because of the h having a literally hearing impairment but also the two main characters being different species. It’s light-enemies to friends to lovers. It’s short and adorable.

Great with the details about her hearing issue, I like the tail bits too..lol (it’s amusing when their tails give away their emotions when they’re being the opposite), it’s sweet they fell in love with the insides not the packaging 😉 especially since they got on each other’s nerves 😡😡
👅 Ok, so, I LOVED IT & LMFAO when Ashley Licked Khex❣️❣️❣️

😂😂 “I suspect that if I had dinner with Ashley, she'd poison it.”

Fantastic!! Enjoying the series 💙🩵💙🩵💙
I think this one may be my favourite so far of the series, I’ve read it again & again cause it popped into my head for some reason 😉

😻I like this: “ Silly drunk. All of the women are, but I only have eyes for Ashley // She giggles at everything, and her coordination is so bad that I have to safety-belt her into the sled like a child.
"You're not going to puke, are you?" I ask as I start the air-sled. "I have to warn you, I'm a male with a sensitive stomach. If you vomit, I vomit."
She just leans back in the seat and gives me a dopey smile. "No puking. I'm full of cookies." She pats her stomach. "So many cookies."”
And this one goes with it too… “All right, a drunk Ash is a silly Ash. It's keffing cute as shit, though”

😶I don’t think the girl on the cover matches her description though..🫤🧐

When She's Lonely de Ruby Dixon serie Risdaverse libro 7

Argumento:

What?

When She's Lonely packs a surprising emotional punch and wonderful representation with its h, Ashley, who is hard of hearing. I really enjoy Ruby Dixon's Risdaverse books and while I did like this one, I didn't love it. Our h is hiding her hearing challenges out of fear and the consequences are misunderstandings and additional challenges with her farm, a plot line I haven't seen before. Our H, Khex, is one of the characters who misunderstands what is happening at first, until he realizes the secret Ashley is hiding. Up until almost the end of the story though, our H and h are hiding their interest in the other because each thinks the other one just wants to be friends. Their friendship was adorable and how it develops from a place of deep dislike and antagonism was lovely to see unfold. Also, once they're friends, more humor is injected in and Ruby does alien humor really well. I just wanted that shift to a defined romantic relationship sooner for them. But we do get a sweet epilogue a year in the future that's also respectful of the h's feelings regarding her hearing. Ruby did say in her author note at the end (in which she also opened up as to why she wrote a h who experiences hearing challenges) that the next one will be steamier.

The book is told in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, neither were virgins and it had been a while for each (the H only wants the h once he starts interacting with her; there are some vague thoughts that he's been with others in the past), and no bc because they have to receive treatments to be compatible to get pregnant.

Absolutely fantastic.

Before I talk about the main contents of the book, I need to say that everyone should read the author note at the end of the story. Just do it.

With that noted - this is a novella, but we truly got a full story. Ashley and Khex have a great dynamic from the start and the reason behind requesting his aid is both heartbreaking and lovely. (I'm working really hard to avoid all spoilers!)

The adaptations that Ashley has found felt realistic and not over- or under-played. As Khex figured out what Ashley has been hiding from everyone, his patience and support are wonderful. And to be clear - Khex gives support in finding ways to get supportive, not by making decisions for Ashley. His support comes from observation, adjustment, and understanding.

Another fantastic read - I love the depth that Ruby weaves into her stories...there's always growth and I always love a happy ever after🖤

This is the romance between Ashley and Khex. Khex works on a planet called Risda III as a police and protector for humans. He hears about Ashley, who has been a farm owner on the planet for a few months now. Let's just say she is not a fan favorite amongst locals. She always speaks very loud and often ignores people. But Ashley has not told anyone that she is actually hard of hearing and can't hear that well. Khex ends up realizing this and convinces Ashley to go on a few dates with him to keep her hearing impairment a secret. The two of them become fast friends who then secretly pine for each other.

This was super cute and sweet! There is also own voices representation for hard of hearing. Ruby Dixon uses hearing aids, and she wanted to write about a character who experiences the same things she has. I thought that was super cool!! I just really loved these characters and adore when Ruby writes friends to lovers :)

This was a delightful friends to lovers novella in the Risdaverse series! What can I say?

It hit all my friends to lovers must-haves:
-We saw the couple when they first meet and when they have a super settled, watching TV on the couch together everyday, friendship.
-The plot stayed fully committed to the lighthearted tone of the book.
-Both characters were really honest with themselves about their feelings.

PLUS, Ashley was an own voices female MC with hearing loss without the ableist 'fix her' plot line. The male MC so fully accepts her that, once he notices her hearing loss and they establish some communication workarounds, he doesn't even think about it anymore. Khex was so cool and open that it was a delight to spend time in his mind. What a cute couple!

This was cute. Khex was an interesting character and I liked the setup of how Ashley compensates for being hearing impaired. The slow burn friends-to-lovers aspect was also done well and then the authors note at the end was really sweet. I didn’t realize Ruby Dixon was hearing impaired so that made this story extra impactful.

But I've been told that a flawed slave is a dead slave, so I don't say shit about my hearing problems, not even now.

Ashley and Khex were adorable together. And I didn’t cry like expected but I did enjoy this very much. I usually hate novellas but this one was very well written. A whole beautiful story.

Quick(ish) Review

My reliable SFR dealer, Ms. Dixon continues to bring a new spin to the Risdaverse. The heroine has significant hearing loss that she refuses to acknowledge because this ‘verse is cruel and dangerous for a flawed human ex-slave. I loved how the hero took the time to look beyond her surface reputation and really got to know her. There’s no instantaneous fix to her hearing loss and the gradual friends to lovers build was just right. Looking forward to whatever Ms. Dixon thinks of next.

4.5 out of 5 stars

This is the second book I’ve read in this series and I’ve really enjoyed both of them. In this book our heroine is Ashley. She was stolen from Earth years ago and because this is a short book, we don’t get much of her back story but I didn’t mind the lack of. She was rescued and is now living on this planet that is an agricultural sanctuary for people who were stolen from Earth and held as slaves.

No one knows this but Ashley is almost deaf. In the society she’s been living in, people with any kind of imperfections are eliminated. So she doesn’t want anyone knowing. But this presents its own set of problems. Because she can’t hear and knows nothing of farming, she’s unable to hear and learn how to do things.

Khex, our hero, is in the military and his assignment is to help new arrivals adjust to their new environment and Ashley is his biggest challenge. Although he’s generally a laid back, well liked kind of guy, he’s losing patience with Ashley and her incompetence. That is until he figures out she can’t hear, therefore the reason she’s just not getting it. He begins to see her with new eyes and he begins to care for her a great deal, just as she comes to care for Khex. But both are completely friend zoned, though without clueing in, they both have deeper feelings.

This is a sweet story. I really like both Khex and Ashley. He is so protective of her and she is so smitten with Khex. At only 123 pages, I read this book in one sitting and a most enjoyable sitting it was. For 100% sure I’m going to read more books in this series.

This is the first book I've read in this series, so I might be missing more world building from the previous books. It did not take away from this book, so you could read it as a stand-alone. This was a very sweet alien romance between Ashley and Khex.

Ashley was previously captured by aliens and a slave. She is now free and trying to be a farmer on an alien planet that protects the humans. She is hearing impaired and keeping her disability a secret. The aliens who captured her would get rid of humans with disabilities or imperfections, so she has to hide her disability. She is considered rude and loud to the humans and aliens since she has issues hearing people. Khex finds out about her hearing impairment and offers to take her out on a date and help her. They become really close friends, and Khex helps her make new friends.

Khex was very sweet and supportive to Ashley. He helped her with the farm and knocked down her walls. They both were pining for each other. I wish there was a little more steam in this since it took most of the Novella for them to admit their feelings for each other.
