A true life account of the author's experience attending an all-girl private high school. Eriko, Yuma, and Ayano are three buddies about to enter the all-girl Yamasaki Private High School. Watch as their dreams and fantasies of the "sophisticated high class school" get crushed by reality. As the students come of age we witness their search for love, sexual controversy, and the rivalry between cliques.
Her father, Ooshima Yasuichi, mother, Kawashima Reiko, and younger sister, Mishima Yayoi, are all manga artists as well. In her autobiographical work Manga Kazoku she describes what it feels like to grow up in such a unique family. Her cousin, Kobayashi Ana, is a standup comedian.
Let me start out by saying that as a female manga reader I have tired of the manga that throws out fanservice to catch the eye of certain manga readers, yet does nothing to keep the other readers interested in the story. It's old, it's been done before, & it's usually done only to keep people interested in a story that's frankly not that interesting. When I saw this series I expected it to be more of the same old, same old. I was very pleased to find that this is not the case in this series. While HSG *does* have fanservice (and a lot of it at times), it never get extraordinarily over the top & in some cases it isn't very sexual at all.
In this volume we are introduced to the main characters (Eriko, Yuma, Ayano, & Kouda), as well as some secondary characters that are usually introduced as the "Second String" since they don't appear as often in the manga. The initial storyline goes over the girls' reasons for entering into an all girls school, as well as their squabbles with the girls who have already been acclimatized into the all girls school environment. While at times the characters do seem a little shallow & the plotlines a little simple, you are always entertained by the characters' antics. The antics may be crazy, but they are usually somewhat believable to have occured at an all girls school.
Some people may be initially turned off by the first volume, but I really do recommend at least giving the later volumes a try. Just as the girls grow older & mature, so does the manga. In the later volumes the fanservice is greatly reduced, the art quality greatly improves, and the characters grow deeper & the girls truly start to become more mature emotionally & mentally. Just like any other manga series, you have to give the story & characters time to unfold.
I have fond memories of reading this book in middle school and giggling over the random humor in this book. It was extremely odd with weird adventures at an all girl boarding school. There was an abundance of unnecessary underwear shots and period jokes, but that's Japanese high school, I guess? If I were to further dissect this book, it would get a lower rating. It's mostly the nostalgia and fun I associate from this series that I choose to look ahead. It's not perfect, but I glad the author doesn't take themselves so seriously.
This just turned out to be just plain gross. Too many bodily functions/gesture references for me to enjoy it. The whole bit about the no tampons in the pool part... how embarassing! This was just plain childish. I'd rank it up there with Ren and Stimpy... only, I only liked that sort of stuff when I was little. Not now. Even Ren and Stimpy I'm bound to give a break about simply because it involves complete fiction... between a cat and dog, NOT humans.
Even though this is a manga book, I have to say I like Rocko's Modern Life better. Better than this.
Very average series about high school girls (surprise surprise) full of toilet humour and dirty jokes. Might get better in later volumes but you can be sure you won't remember the heroines' names after reading the first. Average characters and artwork. Nothing more to say.
MA-RA-VI-LLO-SO.
