I was not the right reader for this book....

WHY?

Although the book's "Who Killed My Husband's Lover?" storyline was intriguing, the book lacked the depth, tension, and layered character development I was seeking.

The text was repetitive, revisiting the same ideas and emotional beats multiple times without offering new insights.

At times, this repetition slowed the pacing.

This 8-hour book easily could have been a 6-hour book.

I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Robin McAlpine.

Although narrator Robin McAlpine's performance was strong, the book would have benefited from the use of multiple narrators.

This was an Audible Plus freebie so, fortunately, no coveted Audible credits were wasted.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

In the Hudson Valley, home of haunts, a woman is murdered. She just moved there, and didn't know too many people in town...except for her married realtor, with whom she had an affair. The couple are prime suspects. They're obviously having marital difficulties, and this adds more strain.

These are two of the protagonists, and I felt they deserved what was coming to them. They seemed very entitled and self centered, even for their ilk.

The police investigating were a little more interesting.

I feel like there may be potential in this series, but this one found me rooting against the suspects.

I wanted to like this story. The pluses were the page count and size of font. Cover was unimaginative and bland. The story was okay, but why I gave this book a 2 star is because I could not finish it. This book was not professionally edited, and I felt like every other page I found words missing and times when I had to stop and think about what it was all supposed to mean. I do not like being critical of fellow authors, but editing is an absolute must for a book. I know that no matter how hard you try to make a book perfect, there will always be that one, two or three times that something is missed, but the errors in this book were constant.

Suburban hell

A very amateurish police procedural!
Slow down!
Let the story develop slowly!
Read like it was written at a whodunnit workshop!
Enough with the exclamation points! I've never read a book with so many! Editor! Stat!

The main characters were dry and dull!
The detectives were not interesting!
What kind of lawyers did the wife and husband hire?!
Why let their client ramble on to the police?!
It's not relevant to the case!

All these exclamation points!
Who gave this 5 stars?! WTF!

I recently read a murder mystery by a first time author 'Wake' by Shelley Burr
A solid 4 star read.

A murder mystery, with major plot twists and betrayal, in a small town.

First, I want to thank goodreads for the opportunity of winning this e-book through the giveaways.

Secondly, I was excited for this book to say the least. The very beginning and very end had me on the edge of my seat for the main reason for the immediate insight on the feelings of one of the protagonist, Victoria. However, Victoria is painted as a strong, independent and assertive woman, through the narration as well as the synopsis, but in my opinion I didn't get that depiction at all. The husband on the other hand is incredibly obnoxious and a bit of a narcissist.

It also occurred to me that each character didn't have their own individual personality or voice, that is, all the characters meshed or blended into one voice and personality.
As for the plot and story line, I expected a lot more 'gripping' or page-turning factors for a mystery book. To me, it seemed very stretched out like the author wanted to take up space in the book with unrelated content and plot connectors, and all the 'mystery' or jaw dropping scenarios were all saved for the very end, including the epilogue. Additionally, I felt very bored for a huge part of the book and got excited only at the end where all the plot twists were revealed.

Overall, I definitely see the idea for this book, but it simply just didn't do it for me. However, it might be someone else’s file of crime!

Rating: 2⭐️
Genre: Mystery
Would I read again? No
Do I recommend? Not really…Not if you want to get into mystery novels. Maybe a break book.

When your life is, seemingly, perfect but then it goes a bit wrong….. Victoria was born into an affluent family and is happily married and trying for a baby. She then discovered that, not only is her husband having an affair but he’s also suddenly very much in the frame for murder when the woman he’s been seeing is found dead in the house she bought from him in his capacity as an estate agent.
The plot doesn’t really progress much beyond the above summary for the first quarter or so and is a bit of a slow burner for me. The subsequent discovery of secrets from the past and the will she / won’t she forgive him saga is a bit flimsy for me as is the question of her husband’s guilt.
There is a bit of a change of pace towards the end and I few, almost, twists which made it more exciting. The overall premise is fairly good if slightly naggingly lacking in something I can’t quite put my finger on. Nether the less a decent read and definitely worth a go.

Bonnie Traymore has the gift. She takes a regular couple who are in the dull drums of their marriage and manages to have the typical response. Husband not happy, wife unfulfilled and so a indiscretion occurs. Usually, it is just a situation where the affair runs it's course and the couple must decide what to do but in this case the person involved is faced with the mistake being murdered.
They wanted to end the relationship but the other person was clinging to it not ending but it did end when that person is found dead and murdered. So now one of the spouses is blamed for the murder and although at one point we are not sure if it was just one or both in the hot seat we find it really is just one. But could they have done it? Will this couple survive the stress of the pending investigation and publication of what has happened and will the chance that there is another killer be exposed.
So many different twists and turns but in a way that you are able to comfortably follow the story while it is being told.
Amazing and I will be reading many more of Bonnie's books in the future. This would be a great summer at the beach read or a cuddle in front of the fire with a good cup of coco to entertain.
Thank you Bonnie for such a great book.

This is book one of the Hudson Valley series and the main characters are married couple Victoria and Nick, along with detectives Jack Stark and Lexi Sanchez. Victoria is a high-end art dealer, and Nick owns a real estate company, and they live in an isolated modern home they have made their own. Victoria comes from a family that can be traced back multiple generations to the original Dutch settlers to the area and has lots of wealth from her family, but she and Nick live off their earnings, which are high enough. Her mother wasn’t too enamoured with her daughter marrying Nick, but Victoria loved the large family he came from and wants something similar for them as well. Life isn’t perfect especially after a loss that hit her hard, but a holiday together seemed to reset them as a couple, until they got home. They went back into their own sheltered lives, and she suspects her husband is having an affair, again! When he goes back out to his latest client, Angie, who has bought an isolated house on the top of a hill, and had called Nik to say her key wasn’t working. As soon as he left, so did Victoria, wanting to get proof of what he had been up to, so she had proof for their pre-nu. She sees what she believes is evidence enough but injures herself sneaking through the woods.

Nick doesn’t get home for some time, getting some supplies form the shops on his way home, but seems a bit off, as is Victoria. The next morning, both are shocked to see the police at the door, telling Nick that his client is dead, presumed a homicide and they would like to talk to him. He quickly becomes their main suspect, especially with a gap in his timeline, but the time of death almost exonerates him, until further evidence comes to light. There are others to be investigates, with ties to a case Angie had against her former employer, or even possibly a complete stranger. Both Victoria and Nick are keeping secrets about that night and the detectives know they are hiding something, just not what exactly! Victoria even wonders if her past is coming back to haunt or harm her, and now is not the time to ask for a divorce, that’s for sure. Their small village of Tarrytown, in Sleepy Hollow, is gearing up for Halloween, and danger starts ramping up as the killer targets another. Victoria isn’t content to leave the investigation to the police and asks her mother for details of someone she trusts as a Private Investigator, to look into other possible suspects. All sorts will be uncovered, and the true motive of the killer may well be one of the last things to be revealed, as Stark tries to teach new detective Lexi all he can. Secrets will come out and there are a few crackers! The storyline certainly keeps you guessing as to who the killer actually is, as guilt and innocence are easily confused when people withhold information, trying to protect another.

Tarrytown is a place better known for its Halloween festivities and picturesque pumpkin carvings than brutal murders. That was always how it seemed to Victoria, secure in her marriage to Nick and her comfortable lifestyle, until death showed up on her doorstep.

Now she has to think fast to figure what is going on. Not only has her realtor husband been having an affair with a client, as Victoria discovered after following him, now his lover has been killed. Right after Victoria herself found out about the affair! There are implications here nobody could miss.

Both potential suspects with killer motives, Victoria now also has to deal with the possibility that her husband, who has been arrested, actually killed his lover. Because the alternative is as mysterious as it is likely to be complicated.

For reasons of her own, Victoria decides to try and find out what actually happened. That is, of course, also what detectives Stark and Sanchez, who arrested Nick, want to know. And they are professionals, so what are Victoria's chances of discovering anything that they miss? The police are under pressure to solve the case, and that makes it likelier that mistakes may be made...

Despite the atmospheric setting, and a promising start to the mystery, it felt like there wasn't sufficient character development in this story. As a result, it was hard to care about any of the characters. Especially Victoria and Nick, both of whom were self absorbed and not particularly likeable.

Of course, characters in a story don't have to be likeable in order for a book to be enjoyed by a reader, but there didn't seem to be a sufficiently strong plot or skilled enough storytelling here to compensate for that. Overall, it was ok, but not great.

Killer Motives: A Hudson Valley Mystery brings historical beliefs of the area to the forefront. Nick and Victoria Mancusio, married, planned to have a family. The secrets they’ve not shared throughout their marriage place an invisible wedge between them. When Angie, Nick’s real estate client, is murdered, the secrets power out as if someone opened Pandora’s box. Partial truths and omissions make identifying the killer suspenseful as listeners dive down the possibilities only to find something is missing.

Ms. Traymore knows how to create unique characters. The descriptions of the places bring into sharp focus vivid pictures in the listener's mind. The non-stop action and suspense are outstanding. Nick and Victoria are painted with different brushes, yet they complement one another. Nick admits to having a fling and swears the woman threw herself at him. Victoria's trust is destroyed, yet she loves him. She doesn’t believe he’s a murderer and sets out to help prove her point. They are likable and relatable individuals. Jack Stark and Lexi Sanchez are a perfectly matched pair of detectives. Both moved from the city to the smaller town and are adjusting. To a degree, Jack is mentoring Lexi. The development of these characters during the story shows their depth and makes them more likable. They’re the quintessential pair to bring different perspectives to cases, frequently with some delightful dialogue banter.

The voice of Robin McAlpine is perfect for this mystery. The narration portion has perfect emphasis to maintain the tension. The dialogue voices never miss a beat in conveying who is speaking. The story moves along at a can’t stop listening speed. There were no issues with the quality of the audiobook.

Fans of suspense and series will enjoy this story from beginning to end. I know I’m looking forward to book 2.

I recently read Bonnie Traymore's suspenseful thriller, "Killer Motives: A Hudson Valley Mystery," and I must say, it was a rollercoaster of emotions, twists, and revelations. Set in the picturesque village of Tarrytown amidst the annual Halloween festivities, the story surrounds Victoria, a wife grappling with her husband's infidelity. She is thrust into a high-profile murder investigation when her husband's lover is found dead. Traymore effortlessly weaved a tale steeped in mystery, angst, and tension, compelling me to turn the pages as Victoria, conflicted and raw, navigates through a myriad of suspects and 'killer motives,' seeking the truth while dealing with her crumbling marriage. The atmospheric setting and the impending influx of tourists add another layer to the suspense, making the plot even more intriguing.

The character development and the portrayal of emotions were remarkably vivid, making me sympathize with Victoria and her turmoil. Traymore's ability to combine a fast-paced plot, complex characters, and psychological depth made the book more than a regular murder mystery. The intricate relationships, betrayals, and secrets unveiled as the story progressed kept me on my toes, questioning the true motives of each character introduced. I found Traymore's writing style captivating, and the suspenseful atmosphere she created lingered with me long after I finished the book. The book was a thrilling exploration of human emotions and the darker aspects of relationships, making it a must-read for fans of intense psychological thrillers. Killer Motives - One of those books that must be finished before putting it down. Interesting story lines with a variety of characters with secrets, and then some. Good pacing kept the pages flying with no vulgar language or sex but plenty of intrigue and happenings. Well written. Source: Booksprout. 4*

Little Loose Ends - Continues about seven months after Killer Motives ends. Their past catches up with the Mancusios. There are plenty of twists, players and intrigue as they fight for their family's safety. Well written story lines made this another hard to put down book. Source: Booksprout. 4*

The Stepfamily - Definitely one of the better books I have read lately. Interesting with good story lines. Every time there appears to be an end, there's more and a different story to add to the mess. Many secrets come to light and not all are favorable. Only thing I did not care for was the nose scratching at the end. The scratcher was smarter than that but that story line needed closing, poorly done. Source: Booksprout. 4*

Hudson Valley Series, Book 1

Riveting, Surprising, Emotional and Fantastic!

Victoria has suspicions … so she sets about gathering a bit of evidence for the fight that’s sure to come … never once suspecting that the REAL fight … might be for her life! So many suspects with “Killer Motives”! I had several theories about what really might have happened. I think I’ll keep my day job! Suffice to say, I was wrong. Our author has spun together fully developed characters that span the full spectrum of likability, brilliantly believable dialogue and scenes resonating authenticity to perfectly move this story toward a stunning, surprising crescendo! The first thing I did when I finished “Killer Motives” was to seek out book two! THIS story was just that good! Five stars!

Victoria suspects her husband of having an affair and follows him one evening, and sees him kissing the woman and she photographs him.
The next day, she discovers that the woman has been brutally murdered, and cannot help but suspect Nick of murder.

Detectives Jack Stark and Lexi Sanchez are on the case and arrest Nick.
Victoria decides to stand by her man and find evidence to exonerate him.

I truly expected this to be a gripping, edge of the seat novel, but it was quite 'bleh' for me. The investigation seemed half hearted, the detectives went for the person who was last to see the victim.

I didn't like any of the characters, not that there was much character development, and the detectives seemed to be hacks.

Sorry, cannot recommend.

Victoria follows her husband one evening, believing that he is having an affair. She is found right and takes pictures. Next morning two detectives come to their home regarding the death of a woman, the woman she’d seen the previous evening with her husband.
She fears she will be a suspect as well as her husband.
The two detectives, very distinct characters, slowly build a story of the woman and what happened that night.
I really enjoyed this book, the twists and turns, how Victoria and Nick have secrets, that have to be explored to the detectives, to help keep one another safe. Victoria is a strong woman, not wanting to use her family’s money to make her way in the art world, while Nick was easily led the murdered woman, but clearly has the ‘gift of the gab’ selling property for a living.
I would recommend this book.

I originally listened to the audiobook for the 2nd book in this series first, and I suspected that if I'd read this first I would have connected with/understood that book more easily, and I think I was right. Obviously I knew going into reading this mostly what was going to happen since I had read book 2 first, but it's a decent mystery and the relationships are complex, but I didn't feel a real connection to any of the characters, so overall, I'd give 3.5 stars for emotional impact, but the writing is good and it IS a decent mystery story which I would recommend. I'd certainly read other stories by this author.

This book is a must read. I loved mysterious and intense readings and this one is great. This amazing psychological thriller set in the picturesque village of Tarrytown tells the story of Victoria, who discovers her husband Nick's infidelity on the same night that his lover is brutally murdered, setting off a chain of unsettling events. As homicide detectives Jack Stark and Lexi Sanchez arrive at her doorstep, Victoria finds herself embroiled in a high-stakes murder investigation. I loved the plot and how I felt completely immersed in the story. The narrative is rich with suspense, unexpected twists, and intricate character dynamics, keeping me guessing at every turn. This book is perfect for those who love a good mystery with a psychological edge.

It all started with a single woman murdered in her brand-new home. This was your basic crime investigation with its group of possible suspects, which included the realtor that had an affair with the victim and his jealous wife. The mystery certainly lures you in right away. We dig deep into the killer motives. Who would want to kill the woman and why?

As the investigation slowly progresses, we see what the fear and stress of the situation does to the realtor and his wife, who firmly believed in her husband’s innocence. But then who was the real killer? The wife takes it upon herself to find out.

Boy, all these secrets certainly come out in the end!

A fascinating read from start to finish. A good one!

Can we please once, just ONCE, not It’s such a boring, overdone, and irritating trope. It feels shoehorned in for the sake of drama and to set up the sequel, while taking up way too much page space.

There are some intriguing ideas, and the mystery starts strong enough to keep you wondering what might happen next. The story unfolds through three POVs: husband and wife Nick and Victoria, and a homicide detective named Jack. Even with a lot of dialogue and backstory, the characters still managed to feel flat. Nick is so unlikeable that it’s hard to care. He’s supposed to have a redemption arc, but he comes across as such a raging narcissist that it’s tough to empathize with him at all.

Decent pacing and some interesting twists, a happy ending and although there's set-up for the sequel, this could be read as a stand alone. Ultimately though, this failed to leave enough of an impression on me to make me want to continue reading a series with these characters.

I want to thank the author for providing me with a copy of this book, this review reflects my own unbiased and honest opinion.

The author masterfully crafts a tale filled with intrigue and enigmas, mixed up with captivating characters and heart-pounding suspense. The narrative is exquisite, entirely written in prose with dialogues mingled in it.
The characters are well rendered and seem to have real feelings that transmit to us. What they do is highly visual and fantastic pictures were created in my mind. Definitely a fun book that holds attention. Loved it!

suspenseful

Very suspenseful! I had my mouth wide open throughout the pages. It is as suspenseful as a book can get. The characters Jack Stark and Lexi Sanchez are some strong detectives. I actually got to feel the pressure they were under, I even felt sweat running down my forehead at some point. The author did an amazing job at narrating. You definitely need thick skin to enjoy this read. But if you are into murder, action, twists and turns then this is the perfect book for you. And I cannot even imagine being in Victoria's position. Imagine suspecting that your husband could be a cold-blooded murderer. It is not easy to deal with such a situation.

I'm a sucker for anything set in Upstate New York, so I was drawn to this book. It's set around Sleepy Hollow in the Hudson Valley. It started out strong for me and then I guess when I figured out who did it, My main problem was that I didn't care enough about Nick or Victoria to really care what happened to either of them and once I had a good idea of who did it, but not necessarily why, it just became about finishing the book for me. I have seen other reviewers that absolutely loved it, so different strokes, I guess!

Thank you, NetGalley, for the chance to read and review this book. All opinions are mine and freely given.

Victoria thought she had the perfect life and she discovered that her husband has been having an affair. Her life is in pieces and she she will soon find out that Nick’s mistress was found dead. Her life is turned upside down and gossip runs amok in her town. She is questioned by the police. She has to find out who killed the mistress before she is arrested for a crime she didn’t commit. A suspenseful thriller that is definitely a page turner. Witty writing and great characters.

This one had me at the tip of my chair the whole way thru! Great story, lots of things in the background that you know are there, without coming right out and saying so. Sleepy Hollow around Halloween, murder, misdirection and the developments around the investigation, make this a very pleasurable read, one I will revisit in the wintertime, on the couch, under a blanket :-) Ready to read the next book by this author!.
