It’s been nine years since Calum Jacobs, the frontman of The Forgotten Flounders, has returned to his sleepy east coast hometown.
His decision to bail on his post-graduation plans to tour the world with his punk-rock band infuriated his father.
He’s also been too afraid to face Harper Morrison; the girl he left behind. They had plans to go to college together, but the moment he boarded that plane, choosing a different life for himself, Harper had to make her own path…and it didn’t include chasing down a man who’d left her.
When Cal is called back to attend his grandfather’s funeral, he has no idea the shocking secrets that await him…
J.C. Hannigan lives in Ontario, Canada with her husband, their two sons, and their dogs. She writes contemporary romance, through which she brings to light awareness of mental health and social challenges.
Like any good Canadian, she loves hiking and carbs.
I'm a sucker for books like these, rockstar, second chance love, lots of suspense is everything I love in a book and more. Harper and Callum the chemistry between them is fantastic to read and I loved that while they had their struggles they didn't dwell on them.
There was one thing that is kinda my peeve that stood out for me in this book and that was the attention to detail on some everyday tasks like cooking or a shower (now I know I know but hear me out ) whilst I do like to know some details about the tasks in a few places there was a little too much info for me.and I tell you this why? Because if that wasn't the case of would have been 5 stars for me.
Still a really great book to read and hopeless romantics this one will make you swoon! I look forward to reading more from this author.
My first time reading this author's work. It was delightful. I loved the characters. The plausible excuse for ten (?) years absence was acceptable. Each character seemed to have a dimension. I loved that.
I liked the way the book had HEA but left you wanting more.... however, like life, there is more to life. Books try to make endings end but the real life goes on.
If you’re a fan of J.C. like I am, then you know just how talented she is when it comes to story-telling. Well, I honestly think that this is her best work yet. I have loved her books for years, but there’s something special about Off Beat.
Her story-telling is fantastic, you feel the characters you know? You can feel every emotion they feel, the hurt, the anger, the hesitant between them both... but you always feel the instant love of father and son. And that? Is a testament to just how far J.C. has come in her years of writing. I honestly believe that this is her book. The book that people will go ‘who the hell is this woman?’ And they’ll immediately go and read all of her other books.
But man, this book? It’s special. It’s 5 stars. There are quotes in this book that I want tattooed on my body because the words speak to my soul.
And if that doesn’t make you want to read this book? I don’t know what will.
Read it. Live it. And when you’re done, come and fan girl with my about our love of her.
10/10, 5 stars, and all the doughnuts in the world to this book.
I completely enjoyed this emotional Rockstar, second chance romance with all the feels.
It's hard to say to much without oversharing. Calum made some serious choices nine years ago when he was young but he felt it was the only way to make his dreams come true. He got his successes but not without the constant whole that leaving her left behind. Other things caused him to stay away when he had time in his schedule. Maybe he should have made time.
Harper was devastated when Calum just picked up and left her behind. That is not what they had planned all along. Life threw her some hard punches but after a quick pity party she picked herself up and made herself some new dreams. She is successful in her own way and proud of what she has overcome. Thankful to her parents for being by her side. The whole in her heart never really healed after Calum, she has tried but nobody compared.
Is there a possibility of a second chance when the truths come to light? Or will the secrets of the past only push them further apart.
I am excited to see what happens next with the Flounders, I have some suspicions.
4.5 Stars for Off Beat ( Forgotten Flounders #1) This is the first book I have read by this author but it certainly won’t be the last. Off Beat is rockstar, second chance romance at its best and once you add in the suspense this becomes a great start to the new Forgotten Flounders Series. This is Calum and Harper’s second chance at love, when Calum left it was to fulfil his dream, he was young and couldn’t see any way to have his dream and the love of his life so walking away from Harper was the best idea he could come up with. When he returns home for his grandfather’s funeral he knows there is nowhere else he would rather be and coming face to face with the woman who haunts his dream only has him realising he needs to make things right. Circumstances left Harper no choice but to move on with her life but now Calum is back will she be prepared to give the man who holds a piece of her heart and so much more, another chance.... This book has it all, its well written, it has wonderful characters and their story is believable. The characters are easy to relate to and their story will certainly pull on your heartstrings, I smiled and I sighed as I fell hard and fast for this couple and I’m very excited for the next instalment with the Forgotten Flounders. I’m also excited to check out other works by this very talented author.
Thank you, J.C. Hannigan for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I fell in love with the characters. I literally laughed and cried! (The crying may have been more related to a stressful day and wine intake but I was so sad for a strained relationship I can’t be sure!)
I want to know more about about what happens from here and how things will progress for supporting characters. I can’t wait until the second book in the Forgotten Flounders series!!
I really enjoyed reading Calum and Harpers story. This review is spoiler free. The supporting characters each contributed to the story perfectly! I loved that the story is set in Canada, and cannot wait for the other novels for this series. Thank you J.C Hannigan for another great story!
Calum Jacobs is the front man for the very successful band, the Forgotten Flounders, but he has some baggage. See, he fell in love with a girl named Harper, and when he decided to tour the world with his band, he was a huge coward and left her in the middle of the night without even a goodbye. To make matters worse, he didn't even try to come back for her, so I wasn't a big fan of his to be honest. The only reason he even came home was for his beloved grandfather's funeral, but again, still not for Harper, however, he didn't hesitate to finally seek her out. Harper is a girl who is now a successful woman, and I had so much respect for her when she didn't chase him down. I mean if she needed to get in touch with him, well, he changed his phone number & email, so yeah, I'm still quite livid about it but you'll have to read the book to see why I had so much animosity towards him. She did listen to him, and this is the only time that I actually got upset with her, because I really thought she needed to make him sweat longer & make him grovel more, but that's just me. I still have so many questions when it comes to our secondary characters so I hope they're answered soon. Off Beat was an emotional second chance story that was impossible to put down despite my rage so I do HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
What a book, I've always loved a second chance romance and I loved the whole idea of the secrets that are fused throughout this story. Making it a read that keeps you engaged and guessing but also a beautifully written love story. This isn't your normal rockstar romance. It's so much more. It's about lost love, lost time, and broken families.
Calum made a harsh decision when he was young, stupid, and didn't see any other way to have his dream and the love of his life. After he left, Harper picked herself up and made what she could of her life. And make it she did. Reading all of this as it goes back in time makes you feel so much emotion and heartbreak.
There is a huge thread in this story that can't be spoken about and it makes it so hard to express my thoughts and feelings on the story without mentioning anything at all. But I will remain tight-lipped. Just know it's emotional but fun, flirty, and full of fire and passion.
This book is a huge recommendation from me. I look forward to reading the next book hoping and praying it reveals more truths, hopes, and dreams. What a book to read as a first one by this author.
Off Beat is the first read in a new series by J C Hannigan, an author I've enjoyed in the past. I was glad to meet Calum, Harper, Asher, and the cast of character surrounding them.
Off Beat is a bit of a different read in that it doesn't follow the traditional story arc. Ms Hannigan has us jump into the story at the beginning of the conflict - When Calum returns to his hometown after being away for 9 years. She does an excellent job of using flashbacks to build the history needed to have us rooting for Calum and Harper to have a much needed second chance.
It was sweet to see Calum try to work his way back into Harper's good graces, but it was almost too easy. I kept waiting for something to go wrong. One thing I missed/wanted to see a bit more of was just how Calum's career was impacting the changes in his life. We see him get put into sitiuations that could have made things more difficult for him, but he reapeatedly makes the right choice (yay Calum!), but there is a bit of a unresolved question about how his new life gets introduced to the public.
As much as this is Calum and Harper's story, it's also an opportunity to meet Calum's band mates (Dare and Evan) and family who we hopefully see more of in future books. There are several stings that could be pulled for interesting and dynamic stories that I hope we see soon.
Conflicted is the word that comes to mind when I contemplate what I thought of this book. Seldom do you see the secret baby trope without the second chance trope. These are not bad things, I actually enjoy both these tropes. But, the discovery of said secret child irked me. Not how Calum discovered he had a kid, but that he didn’t get angry at Harper once for choosing to keep it from him. She wanted him to come back for her. Not for their kid. So she didn’t tell him. It was selfish and unfair to both Calum and Asher. He thought he knew what was best for her, so took off in the dead of night without even asking her.Which wasn’t fair to Harper. They both forgave without conflict. Most of the conflict was between Calum and his father. His father is a douche. His mother deserves better and if Dare and Connor (Calum’s sister) hook up in a future book, maybe we will see her get a spine and leave the boorish awful man. There’s a lot of revelations and pride in this book. Both move the story along well. This reminds me of Forever My Girl by Heidi McLaughlin, with some notable differences. Fans of FMG will enjoy this and vice versa.
This second chance Rock Star romance had the angst and feels that I love. Great story. Great characters. Great read.
A Rock Star returns to his small home town, after eight years to find much has changed. I wanted to dislike Calum, he screwed up at eighteen. However, I couldn't help but feel for the older and wiser Calum. The one who had learnt that the decisions in our youth can be the biggest mistakes and regrets of your life.
Harper is a great leading lady. Although justifiably frustrated, angry and hurt, she is quick to see the other side of the story. She may have been guarded and wary, but she was also mature and handled Calum expertly. It was like reading about a real-life couple with this pair.
I'll be reading more from this author and will look forward to book two when it is released.
First time reading from this author and it a fantastic read! From the very first page till the end... I was pulled in & emmersed in the characters story/lives. This is a story of fortune/fame, love & regrets. J.C. Hannigan gave us a performance like no other... a well written story with details & emotions that you could feel through the pages. Heart strings are pulled.
Calum left everything behind him (including his life w/Harper) nine years ago to chase his dream of becoming a rock star. Fortune & fame all achieved... but with all that, something is still missing in his life. When Callum is notified of his grandfather's passing, he heads back home. While home, he comes face to face with the woman who he left behind...making him realize that even though so much has changed while he was away, he made a mistake by letting this woman go and Calum wants/needs to make things right and win Harper back.

Off Beat is the first book in a new series by J C Hannigan, who also happens to be one of my go to authors . She never fails to deliver , a book that grabs your attention from the very start and keeps you on the edge of your seat through the entire story . I absolutely loved Harper and Calum, before I knew what was happening, I found myself so invested in their story .Off Beat is do much more then a rockstar romance , but also a story of second chances .Calum made a a harsh decision when he was younger . It definitely was not the smartest decision either . He unfortunately could not come up with a way to follow his dream and stay with the love of his life . He chose his dream over Harper , and that caused so much heartache. Will Harper be able to forgive him ? Will they have a future together ? Can Calum show her he has changed . Omg my emotions were just all over the place . I absolutely loved every single minute of this wonderful story . IT ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT BE MISSED ❤️💜❤️💜
A wonderful story of how Callum follows his dream but leaves behind his true love. Not realize he left more than Harper behind. When he comes home for his grandfather’s funeral he realizes what al he missed out on and ties to rebuild their relationship up hoping in a second chance. Reading of the other characters and family in the book, a lot of more stories and secrets will come out. A must read for sure
So excited to discover another Canadian author that writes rock star romances and read Off Beat. It was so amazing that the story starts with Calum is on stage with his band at the Commodore in Vancouver, a place of many fond rock memories for me. It then switches to a small town on the East Coast where everyone knows everyone.
Calum left Harper behind nine years ago to chase his dream of becoming a rock star. Once he has achieved it all, he finds that something is missing in his life. He has always regretted leaving Harper behind and he gets the chance to see her again when he goes home to attend his Grandfather's funeral. A lot has changed since he left, but a lot has stayed the same including his strained relationship with his father. He finds the biggest surprise of his life when he meets Harper again and his life is turned upside down.
What a great story of immense love and deep regret, both Harper and Calum have things to blame themselves for but the spark that has always been there between them becomes an inferno and Calum realises that what he was looking for was at home all the time.
JC had me totally enthralled with this story and so emotionally involved with the characters, some made me laugh, some made me cry and some made me angry at their short sightedness. All in all it was a wonderful read that totally had me wanting more.
This was a really good start to a new rockstar series by JC Hannigan. It's not the typical "rockstar" story, it's a second chance romance. Very well-written, JC Hannigan tells the story of the rockstar, Calum, and his first love, Harper, and how they find their way back to each other. I am anxious to read the other books in the series (I can already tell who book 2 is about!), and I definitely recommend this one.
This book is amazing! It has a great story line and definitely some great steamy parts. It does end with me having questions. I am hoping those questions are answered in the next books. A lot of surprising things happen, from finding new family to finding old loves! Definitely recommend!
I see the cover on Facebook and red the the plot. I loved the story line and characters. They drew you in and captivated my attention. I can’t wait to read the next book, hope we don’t have to wait too long
This was the first time I picked up a book from this author and I loved it all the way from the first to the last word. I really love writing style of this author. I was really surpirsed that after a few words, I was already hooked to the story, which doesn't happen really often.
The characters are really deeply developed. Their stories are full of emotion, all their decisions through the story have a valid reason. They felt so real. I could feel all their emotions. I am so gratefull, I found this author and in no time, I'll read all of her books I can find.
For me, this book is one of the best I've ever had the chance to read. 5 stars? I'd give it 15 stars if I could. This book is a MUST read!
I won an early copy of this book & finished it in 2 days. It was a great, “cheer me up” story. Pretty predictable but great, nonetheless. There were a few surprises along the way though, so it wasn’t boring. I’ve read all of J.C.s books, and while this wasn’t her best, it was still a great read.
This is a sweet second chance romance. Calum returns home after his grandfather's death to make peace his ghosts of his past. Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC.
What a great rock star/2nd chance read. Really liked Callum and Harper. They both mDe mistakes but are so good together. Couple plot twists and some great side characters make this a fun read. Excited for more.
I really liked this story. A boy and a girl fall in love, life happens and their paths separate. Later in life, a man and a woman reconnect and rediscover each other.
Their connection was strong, even after all those years apart. I liked that there wasn't anything bitter about their reunion either. Interested to see where the rest of this story line will go.
