DI Graham Walker is just beginning to settle into a quieter life on the picturesque Gower peninsular when a call comes in. Even to the coast, death has followed him.
The remains of a woman have washed up on the golden sands of Three Cliffs Bay. Her young body is twisted, broken, and Graham soon learns that hers was not the first that the local community have seen – not by a long shot.
As Graham begins to probe into the lives of those around him, it becomes clear that the people that had so warmly welcomed him are less than keen to bring an end to the death that surrounds them. He must work in the shadows if he is to unravel the web of lies he has been spun, and penetrate a generation-long façade to bring an end to the cycle of abuse and murder.
Can Graham bring down the killer before a new sequence begins, or will it be him that the locals find next - face down in the sand?
Beyond the Waves is the second book in the DI Graham Walker series of Crime Thrillers. If you like bone-chilling suspense and captivating characters, then you will love Benjamin J Sawyer’s page-turning follow up to The Minder.
This is the third book I have read by this author, the first being a novella, 'Fledgling', which introduced the character of DI Graham Walker.
The second book, 'The Minder' was a fantastic read and was a great start to this series.
In 'Beyond the Waves', Graham has left the big city life of Cardiff and moved to a remote village in Wales. On his first day, before he even has chance to leave home for the station, he receives a phone call from his new DCI asking if he can meet her by the coast where a body has been washed ashore.
Soon, another body turns up. His DCI is convinced that these are suicides but Graham thinks otherwise.
This quiet village has many secrets and some members of the community will do anything to cover things up. Just who can Graham believe and more importantly, trust? Can he get to the truth before his family is put in danger?
As with the previous book, this can be read as a standalone story but there is a continuing back story running through it as well. The short epilogue in this sets everything up nicely for the next novel, which I can't wait to read.
Beyond the Waves by Benjamin J Sawyer is book 2 in the DI Graham Walker series. Graham and his partner Aynsley and daughter Elena, have left Cardiff behind for the serenity of the Gower Peninsula. After the horrors of the last case in Cardiff, they want a new start. But there is something very strange going on as 2 bodies are found in the first few days in their new town. There are too many secrets, and these secrets play a big part in this community. This was an enjoyable read and I couldn’t put it down. The ending was very clever.
Just as with book one, this is well-written and the characters mostly realistic and relatable. However, I thought this story less believable, and the "evil" characters less consistent. Clearly there will be book three, so I hope the author can pull it together better than this one.
The 2nd book in the DI Graham Walker series from Benjamin J Sawyer is another good read from a new and exciting author on the crime scene.
After the harrowing events of book 1, Walker and family take a transfer and are now just about to start working in a small insular Welsh Peninsula when a body of a young girl washes up ashore before Walker even starts.
With inept colleagues and a further body following in quick succession, Walker knows only he can get to the bottom of the deaths.
With a creeping and sinister suspense building throughout, Benjamin Sawyer has created an entertaining page turner, which is deftly paced, with a good plot and some real devious characters.
The story flows well, the finale is satisfying and the epilogue whilst a bit far fetched did leave me with a mischievous grin and a firm interest into what’s to come in the next instalment.
