Better Than Bulletproof

Rate this book
On secret military missions Harlan Jeffries had defied danger; he'd be damned if minding an adorable child - and the boy's stubborn and all too sexy aunt - would be his downfall. But when little Adam's mother went missing, Harlan had no choice but to take them both under his own personal protection. Gina Rodgers knew nothing about mothering or staying alive - but she knew a man with secrets when she saw one. Why then was she drawn to the macho, larger-than-life Harlan? Even as danger bred desire, Gina wondered what he knew about her sister's disappearance. But with the web of murder and conspiracy tightening around them, Harlan was all that stood between them and a killer.

I didn’t grow up burning to be a writer. As a child I wasn’t even much of a reader until fourth grade. That’s when I was stuck at home with the flu and my big sister read THE BLACK STALLION aloud to me. For hours I was enthralled—shipwrecked in a foreign land and riding an untamed horse across the hot desert sand. Then tragedy struck. My sister lost her voice. (I think she caught my flu.) But I couldn’t wait to hear what happened to Alec Ramsey—so I picked up that book, finished reading it by myself, and went in search of more adventures at the local library. Today I live in Dallas with my husband, our two children, and a shockingly-spoiled Boston terrier.

In November 2013, HARD TARGET: Elite Ops-Book 1 was released in my new series from Avon Impulse, featuring sexy ex-military men...and the women who rescue their hearts. HARD TARGET received an Award of Merit in the HOLT Medallion Contest and was also a nominee for best romantic suspense in the GDRWA Booksellers Best Awards. PERSONAL TARGET, book two in the series, released in 2014 followed by EASY TARGET (Elite Ops 3) in 2015. For excerpts, book trailers, and more—visit my website at www.KayThomas.net

In addition to their US releases, my national best-selling books have been published in France, the Netherlands, Estonia, Australia, the UK and South Africa. BULLETPROOF HEARTS (April 2011), won the 2012 HOLT Medallion in Short Contemporary and was a finalist in the National Readers' Choice Awards. My debut novel, BETTER THAN BULLETPROOF (January 2009) was a HOLT Medallion Award of Merit recipient, a Readers’ Crown finalist, and a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice nominee.

Enjoyed this story much better than the last I read! (Different author).

Seeing as how I read #3 first, these can all be read as a stand-a-lone! So far I have not see an continued other than the theme bodyguards & bullets!

Great story of the heroine realizing she was very strong!!! Wished it had turned out better for the senator - like he was doing a op on the side, trying to catch marine, but you'll see why it all happened in the end.

So glad this wasn't Jimmy's (the friend)'s widow, too hinkey if you ask me if that was the case!

It was unreal but totally acceptable that Harlan was nervous in the end. Especially since the heroine of the stout rocked it at the end, he felt like he couldn't be her protector as how could he protect such a strong woman! But we'll you see!

This is the third time I've read this book, and I loved it this time, as much as I did the first time I read it. The story has a lot of suspense to it, and makes you think, if there is corruption in our pharmaceutical companies? It also makes you think just what will some politicians do to get funding for campaigns, and votes.
Harlan works with Adam who is a little boy that is autistic, and watches him while Sarah is working. Harlan is alarmed when Sarah never makes it home from work, and calls Gina, Sarah's sister. Gina grabs the first flight she could get to be with her nephew. Shortly after she arrived at her sister house Gina was attacked. When Gina and Harlan start to ask questions, bullets start flying. Sarah had been working on research that could prove that some vaccines are linked to autism. Some people are trying to make sure that research is destroyed, never to be read, or seen. Who is behind the attacks? Who wants to stop the research from being known. The questions, and bodies pile up as the suspense, and action intensify.

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't a typical sappy romance. This book had a really good story line. This book really threw out some good points that made me stop and think. If pharmaceutical companies had to pay for each mistake they have made, could they afford to manufacture any vaccines or the medicine we need? What happens to the families that are affected by the mistakes the companies make? Sarah was being the voice speaking out for those families.

Sample from chapter 4
The sound of breaking glass interrupted her. Gina looked at the table as her coffee cup exploded, splashing warm liquid over her hand. What was happening? "Down, Adam. Get Down" Shouted Harlan. Kate slumped forward and Gina froze, unable to process what she was seeing. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. Harlan dove over the table and grabbed her shoulders, crushing her to the vinyl seat before rolling her to the floor. Her cheekbone and temple rapped against the foot of the table base with a resounding thwack.

Gina Rodgers is surprised to receive a phone call from Harlan Jeffries about her sister. Sara, her very responsible sister, did not come home and Harlan has been caring for her son, Adam. Gina arrives at her sister’s house to find that her sister somehow became embroiled in a maze of conspiracy at the center of which is some work Sara did. Gina is not sure she should trust Harlan, a man who seems to be dangerous in his own right but it quickly becomes obvious that Harlan may be what will keep her and Adam a live.

From the exciting, tense beginning to the very satisfying ending, Better Than Bulletproof is an incredible story of greed and the desire for power. Gina knew Harlan was more than he appeared but as the story progresses, we find that many of the players in this tale are not as they appear. Gina and Harlan learn this the hard way. Kay Thomas has penned a tale that will leave you wondering about our system and its ability to function as intended when money and power overwhelm right and wrong takes over. Thoughtful, well-developed plot make Better Than Bulletproof a not to missed story. Kay Thomas is an amazing story teller.

Review by Jen:
Kay Thomas is going to be the guest at Book Talk this weekend (January 10-11). In preparation for the promo, she sent me a copy of Better Than Bulletproof to send to our contest winner. As it sat on my shelf waiting to be passed along to that lucky blog reader, it kept grabbing my attention. Wanting a short read, I picked it up. And to whoever wins the contest, don't worry... I didn't even crack the spine. :)

I have to say that I was very happy with my decision to read Better Than Bulletproof. Kay Thomas created a wonderful story with interesting characters and a edge-of-your-seat plot. I found it to be quite the page turner and didn't want to put the book down. It was also a tear jerker. I had to keep that box of tissues handy for most of the second half of the book.

I highly recommend picking up this book, and I for one and anxiously awaiting her next book!

What captivated me most about this book was the storyline, it shows the corruption when elected members of congress become dependent on funding from special interest groups. A current topic that Kay Thomas has turned into a great story of suspense.

This was written by a woman in my neighborhood. It is good for a quick read/romance/suspense novel.
