After Tahlia is put through a strange ritual called the Awakening on the evening her city is attacked, she wakes up a middle realm of her world. Tahlia has lived a sheltered life, never really knowing what it means to be a Celestial from the House of Aries, and is woefully unprepared to navigate the world on her own. She can't even control her own magic. In Belhalla, the middle realm, she is quickly found by a wolf-shifter named Rikter who takes her to his clan. There, Tahlia learns of the tensions between humans and the fae who inhabit the realm, and of the strained relations within the Blackfang wolf clan. Rikter figures her appearance must hold some significance, especially since the Celestials have been absent for five centuries. Will Tahlia's arrival play a part in the coming war between fae and humans? She and Rikter journey to the royal palace to learn more about her abilities and heritage. What they find leaves Tahlia with a hard choice: to embrace her destiny, or turn from it and risk countless lives.

There are several issues with this book that get in the way of the story. There are strange timeline leaps that can confuse the reader, and chapters switch points of view without page breaks. Characters lack in strong voice, so reading dialogue feels like reading the same character who speaks rather stiffly. There are a few typos in the text, too. The plot lacks urgency, and there is not a lot of character growth or change. I think this book would benefit from another round of edits.

The overall idea and plot for the story are solid. Those who reach for stories of destiny, embracing one's power, and pining romance will enjoy Release. This book will appeal to fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout From Blood and Ash series.
