Hi, I’m Alice, personal protection specialist.

The key to my success has been keeping a low profile.

But when the mobster’s brother I was protecting got pureed by a tomato truck before he could testify in court, the internet turned “me” into a “meme.” I needed to lay low. And when you have nowhere left to go, that’s where you go: Nowhere, Nevada, a small town trying to make a name for itself with Big Things. Like the world's biggest lawn flamingo, corkscrew, pizza cutter... Ahh, home, not-so-sweet home.

I arrived just in time to trip over another dead body.

All the clues point to my brother, Charlie, being the bad guy. Some folks might call Charlie a slacker, just because he has no steady job, forgot to pay taxes and lost the family home, and now lives in a treehouse. He’s freewheeling, but my little bro’s no killer.

I need to prove Charlie’s innocence, but my specialty is counter-surveillance, not amateur detective work. And Nowhere’s not making my job any easier. The hitman I’m evading may be geriatric, but he can still aim. There’s a persistent reporter dogging my heels, and a sexy PI I’m not sure I want to dodge. Can I clear my little brother and avoid becoming Nowhere’s next Big Fatality?

“Can you think of anyone who wanted to kill Donald?”
“Aside from the entire town?”

Big Shot by Kirsten Weiss is the first book in the Big Murder Mystery Series.

The book opens with Alice, a woman body guard, who wakes up half-way through a job, only to discover that her client had drugged her and stolen her car. She jumps into an Uber and – in her pjs – pursues the rogue client, who gets themselves killed by running into a truck.

Now Alice is wanted for the murder of her client – a mob boss.

To get away from the media frenzy, Alice goes back to her hometown of Nowhere. But the town she left behind seems to be a lot different from the one she comes back to.

Add in that as soon as she arrives, she stumbles on a dead body!

“Unbelievable. You bug out of Nowhere, and when you finally decide to come back, you dig up a body?”

Big Shot is narrated in Alice’s first-person perspective. She’s sarcastic, funny, and super resourceful. She’s also in a line of work that rarely features women – being a body guard.

But Alice isn’t perfect. And I loved that about her. Throughout the novel, she’s hopeful that her ex-husband, Buck, who owns the surveillance company will clear her name. But as a reader I could clearly see he wasn’t doing anything and the situation keeps getting worse for Alice. I like that she’s honest, fairly realistic, and practical.

“You deal with many murders as a body guard?”
“No. We try to keep our clients from getting dead.”

Other characters include Alice’s brother, Charlie, his friends – lots of friends, and an old mobster who seems hell bent on killing Alice in the funniest and craziest of ways!

Though Big Shot opens with Alice’s predicament, she’s quickly thrown into a bigger problem: Her brother being a suspect in a murder in her hometown of Nowhere (where she was hoping to hide from the public eye).

My biggest problem with Big Shot was the long chapters. But otherwise, I enjoyed the book.

“Charlie had access to old weapons and reason to want revenge. Though anyone who knew my brother knew he was too laid back to bother.”

Overall, I found Big Shot to be an intriguing cozy mystery with memorable characters, and lots of sarcasm. I look forward to reading more books in the Big Murder Mystery Series.

First in a series books are always a fun way to get to know an author. You can grow with them as they write and Kirsten Weiss has had quite a number of first series books. From the Doyle Witches, to Pie Town, Wit’s End or the Perfectly Proper Paranormal series there’s always something new and fun from Kirsten’s mind.

Now she brings us yet another series that’s really just a straight forward murder mystery. The characters don’t have any magical powers or outrageous quirks but the story just powers ahead with calculated twists and turns that keep you guessing. The characters are richly written and are believable in the everyday world but there are easter-egg references to her other series which are always a treat.

Along with this new series Kirsten has launched a fun, new game that you can download, print and play. Get some friends together and enjoy your own mystery!

The new Big Shot series is sure to be a crowd pleaser. It’s mystery for mysteries sake and I for one can’t wait to see where these new characters are headed.

This is the first book I have read from this prolific author. I was pleasantly surprised. It's got quirky characters, a barbecue chicken wing eating deer, Estonian mob characters, and a town with BIG THINGS. I liked the heroine, Alice. She'd gotten duped by the mob guy she was supposed to keep safe. He'd gotten killed in an auto accident. Her reputation ruined, Alice goes back to her hometown to lick her wounds and find a new way. Instead, she finds a body.

This novel is pure entertainment although I was surprised to read in the author afterward that there really is a town with BIG THINGS. In this novel, it was a way to try to keep the town from totally dying. Who wouldn't jump on a tour bus to see the world's biggest lawn flamingo, pizza cutter or giant mushroom?

This is a fun mystery to read when one needs a total escape. The plot might be a little complex and some of the character actions are a bit unbelievable, but you'll laugh or at least smile as you read. There are probably no intellectual insights in this novel. It's just fun.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the author. My comments are an independent and honest review.

I was granted complimentary access to Big Shot by Kirsten Weiss as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

After spotlighting a couple different Kirsten Weiss books on my blog that I wished I had reviewed after reading the media kit, I finally came across a tour for one with a review option that fit my schedule. Yes, please!

I absolutely love the way Weiss writes dialogue. All of it felt completely natural, even when things were getting quite weird, nobody felt like a talking head, and I could see myself sitting in on every conversation. Alice and her brother had such a fun dynamic, and Alice was a very likable protagonist. I'll also add that the timing of reading this worked out coincidentally perfect for me because I read this during the very public Depp v Heard trial and all of Depp's personal protection specialists called as witnesses also didn't appreciate being called bodyguards. That detail made me snicker because apparently it's quite accurate to the profession and I wouldn't have known had I read this book a couple weeks earlier. Bravo to the author!

There's no doubt that strange things are going on surrounding murders in Alice's floundering home town, and I love the fact that the protagonist is "Alice" in a strange little town that felt so much like Wonderland. With that said, I did sometimes feel that there were a few too many oddities going on even given the plot and setting. The chicken wing snatching deer felt like an ominous horror foreshadowing element (herbivores turning carnivores) and that's clearly not where something billed as a cozy mystery is going to go, so I sort of stalled out on deciding as I was reading that scene and a few after it whether or not this was a clue that should be taken seriously or just another "this town is WEIRD" comedy detail.

All in all this was a very entertaining book and I'm looking forward to taking advantage of future opportunities to review for this author. If you like cozy mysteries and a little absurdity in your fiction, read this!

This is a fun quirky mystery that I enjoyed. It is described as Stephanie Plum meets Alice in Wonderland and although I agreed I think it had more a Jana DeLeon Miss Fortune flavour to it. That's not to say it is a copy because this book is certainly very different but I think it is because the main character returns to her home town to hide out from some very bad guys and let's just it doesn't go to plan. The characters are quirky, actually make that the whole town is, which often lead to some funny situations, even the animals get in on the act. The mystery was good. I did know who the killer was and why (so no surprises or twist) but it sure was entertaining unmasking the killer. A great start to A new series and one I think will just get better and better the more we come to know the characters.
When Alice's client dies, her boss who is also her ex husband talks her into returning to her home town until the media storm blows over. The problem is for a personal protection specialist to lose a key witness, staying under the radar is not easy. Especially when she isn't even back a day before she stumbles over a dead body. The man who took possession of her family home and the reason her brother is now living in a tree house. Alice's previous job might have been counter surveillance and not investigation but afraid the police aren't going to look any farther than her brother she decided she had better learn fast and quietly. Can Alice find the killer and keep her return a secret? Then another body is found and once again the evidence points to her brother. Her sleep town isn't like she remembers it as now it seems to be harbouring secrets, revenge, hit men and giant mushrooms, making a quite life impossible but will helping her brother put her life in the crosshairs of a camera or worst a gun?

I hope readers interested in this book have read the crossover/prequel called WOMAN OF PLANET X. It gives you some insight into the town, the people, and the general craziness, making a smooth transition to BIG SHOT.

BIG SHOT is set in the mythical town of Nowhere, Nevada, the town of BIG things. Lest you think this is an unbelievable premise for a town, may I direct your attention to the tiny town of Casey, Illinois that was the author's inspiration for this new and hilarious series. Alice Sommerland, an expert specialist in surveillance and countersurveillance (don't call her a bodyguard) seeks refuge in her home town of Nowhere after a client she was hired to keep safe dies in a truck vs car crash. What she finds is disturbing-from her little brother loosing the family home-to the "big" additions to the town-to murder. What follows is pure pleasure for the reader-filled with mysteries, the mob, and tons of funny characters. Vivid descriptions of people, animals, activities, and the location combine to make the reader feel they are an actual observer, not a reader of a book. Read it and laugh! I am sure you will join me in planning ahead to get the next book in the series coming in June. I loved this and can hardly wait for the next book!

This book was touted as a Stephanie Plum meets Alice in Wonderland, I would describe it more in the same fashion as a Jana Deleon, Miss Fortune series, or Leslie Lantry, Merry Wrath series, type book as their main characters return home to hide out and those series are hilarious for me. All three series are unique and thus entertaining to me.

The story is set in the mythical town of Nowhere, Nevada. Alice Sommerland, our sleuth has returned home after an assignment she was on goes south. While trying to stay under the radar, she needs to investigate the deaths of a few people that the police think her brother killed. She is convinced that her brother could not have committed these murders and needs to find other suspects.

Her hometown has changed over the years. Currently, it has become the home of big things, which brings the tourists in, and unfortunately, crime has grown. The crime could be due to the mafia type element that has taken residency in her town.

I liked the first in the series and think this can only get better. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

If you've enjoyed any of Weiss's books, you'll almost certainly like this one as well (and vice versa). Her books are comfortable and approachable without being repetitive or "too easy". She's great with a turn of phrase, and even better at setting up ridiculously funny scenarios that somehow make perfect sense. Big Shot is no exception.

As is often the case with a good cozy mystery, I found myself far more interested in the characters than the murder or overall plot, and I'm looking forward to spending more time with them in future books in the series.

Nowhere, Nevada is part of a larger connected world by author Kirsten Weiss, and I think that I like it more than our main character does.

(Note: this is my first Booksprout review, and I think that reading on a deadline for the purpose of writing a review detracted a bit from my overall enjoyment! I found myself impatient on occasion, but I can't be sure that had anything to do with the writing.)

In short: give this book a try!.

Kirsten Weiss is one of the few authors who I immediately add to the Kindle or Nook when I hear they have a new book out or one I haven't yet read. She's a highly prolific writer with several series out there and I still dig her books. That really doesn't happen often wth me.
This is her newest series and it's a dandy. It's funny, with great characters including the side ones. My favorite is Gert. When you read the book you will see why. I want to visit his store and I want to hang out with him.
The book starts with humorous action California then meanders to humorous investigation in Nowhere, Nevada. The 'Big' in the series title is what the sleepy town is doing for itself to not be as sleepy and more a tourist destination. it's a little like visiting a town in Land of the Giants. There's the biggest pizza cutter, biggest flamingo, biggest can of peas [with peas actually inside]...and so on. It's a town with drive and it's causing problems. Differing ideas of how the town should be run.

This is the first book in the Big Murder Mystery Series by Kirsten Weiss. Alice Sommerland is a former bodyguard who, after an unfortunate incident with one of her clients, goes home to Nowhere, Nevada, to regroup and spend some time with her younger brother, Charlie, after being away for several years. She finds out when she gets there that some Big Things have changed. For instance, her brother is no longer living in their family home. He is living in a treehouse. To make matters worse, Alice finds the new owner of their childhood home dead the next day, and all the evidence points to Charlie as the murder. Alice knows her brother couldn't have killed anyone, so she has to figure out who did.

I really enjoyed Alice's humor and her relationship with Charlie and the other quirky residents of Nowhere. I am looking forward to the next installment of this series!.

Alice is starting over as a personal protection specialist, this time on her own. A favor for he ex leads to her getting drugged by their client, and him finding himself featured a dramatic and media filled role, without his seatbelt in a vehicle stolen from Alice.

Hiding from bad press and crazy relatives of that client leads Alice to her hometown.

She is literally from the town of Nowhere. It is unsurprisingly a weird and quirky place.

reconnecting with her brother leads Alice into convoluted chaos, and a suspect for misdeeds and murder.

And then there is Fredo. Part dog, part demon, part defensive live and chaos.

A wild and wacky read.

whodunnit meets friends and family connections and disconnects, and redefining who Alice is and what she wants and needs.

I received an ARC and this is my voluntary review. This is the first book in a new series but the story takes place mostly in Nowhere, Nevada, which has been featured in a previous series(which I have not read) It is an odd place filled with odd characters who get involved in odd situations. The heroine/main character already involved with one dead body reluctantly returns home only to stumble into more deaths... which need solved... since as is often the case with cosies... the police aren't terribly competent. It's a fun book filled with silly situations, a wonderfully snarky central character and while the case is solved in the end there are still some questions to be answered. I enjoyed the character development and look forward to seeing more in subsequent books.

Nowhere, a big can of beans, murders and a stag.

Being a fan of the author and having enjoyed many of her books, I was eager to read and review a complimentary copy of this book.

The book starts with Alice, a bodyguard (sorry, protection specialist), returning to her hometown of Nowhere to lie low after a public disaster regarding her last protection detail. A few days after arriving she in town she finds a body next to a big can of beans.

Solving a murder isn't easy. During Alice's investigation we meet interesting characters, get to know more about the town of Nowhere and Nowhere's big plan. Not to mention finding out who the murderer was.

An easy and enjoyable book to read. I recommed it.

Big Shot is the first in the series and it kept me entertained throughout the book. It's very quick-paced and funny. The characters are great. The main character, Alice, has returned to her quirky, small hometown. She finds her brother, Charlie, is living in a tree house and there are now all kinds of huge, weird things around town -- to bring in tourists. Like the world's largest bowling pin. Back to the characters being great .... the author is able to make the people eccentric without going over board and making them feel unrealistic. The main character is cool and her relationship with her younger brother seems very authentic. His character, Charlie, is really awesome. The book is fun and funny. The mystery is good. It's a winner

Our heroine may want some quiet time, but we don't always get what we want, particularly when family is involved. Guess like she is going to have to step into the limelight once again.

This is book one of the series, so a fine place to start.

This is a cozy mystery with a tough female lead. What a great way to start! The story is well written, easy to read and just plain fun. It features a well developed setting and wonderful characters that bring the story to life. I really liked our heroine who is smart and resourceful. We also get a solid mystery and a nice amount of humor to keep things light. Overall, it was a wonderful story and I look forward to more in this series.

Highly recommended.

I am always looking forward to read the first book of a new series, this no exception as I’ve read most of the author’s other series. It sure wasn’t a disappointment. I loved Alice being a lot more professional than most other cozy sleuths but still being corky and funny. Her relationship with her brother and the other citizens of Nowhere, especially Gert, is endearing though I am much more interested in the sparks there are between her and Fitch.
The case wasn’t bad, a bit very obvious in my opinion, at least part of it, the motive staring in your face at least from the middle of the book. All the more disappointing that Alice took so long, not even considering the real culprit for a long time. Though there was a surprise in the end after all.
On to the second book now!

‘Big Shot’ is a murder mystery story and the first of its series. The story begins with Alice and her pursuit that does not go well. To run away from all the heat, she retreats to her hometown in Nevada, but trouble follows her, and she has another hurdle to handle.
The story is intense, and while it covers the main plotline, it also introduces content that can follow into the next book. It ends by providing enough closure to satisfy the reader but also leaves some for the wonderous mind.

The concept was novel and enjoyable to read. Alice’s personality is perfect for the drama. The sideline characters meshed well with Alice, bringing an excellent dynamic. I recommend this book to mystery readers.

Talk about a fun and funny cozy mystery, this is it. I have now read several Kirsten Weiss books and each one is just as good as the other. This one is Book 1 in a new series titled A Big Murder Mystery Series. I haven’t read all of her many series, but I’ve read enough to say this a different theme. In fact she somehow manages to do that with every series. Must have a vivid imagination, don’t you think?

This time there are a lot more dead bodies (you have to have dead bodies in a mystery, right?). The mob is involved and the main character was a bodyguard. A fun mix in a well-written enjoyable cozy.

Lighthearted read

Kirsten Weiss has created a fun setting, with a unique town, quirky characters, and a few twists. Alice is smart, witty, and just a little naive. There are a lot of disparate elements, but they are woven together to make a great story: Estonian Mafia, a town trying to be known for Big Things, the world's ugliest dog, an angry chicken stealing deer, medieval battle group, and more. I enjoyed this first book in a new series, and am looking forward to visiting Nowhere again.

I’ve followed Ms Weiss to Nowhere

I really enjoy Kirsten Weiss series. I’ve followed her characters for years and enjoy her quirky stories and settings. I also like how she blends characters and details from her other series. It’s like there’s an alternative universe somewhere or maybe nowhere. This new series follows Alice, a protection specialist to her home town and gets involved trying to keep her brother from being accused as the killer. Her books are witty and fun reading. I’m about to start book 2 in the series.

Alice comes back to Nowhere after an incident, to get some peace and quiet, but things do not go as planned. Her brother has weird accommodations and is targeted as a suspect when someone is found dead. The town is full of quirky people and entertaining situations that keep you laughing so much you can not put the book down. This author has an imagination that is gold. Totally enjoyed the book and now need to read the rest of the series. Terrific characters and plot are addictive.

Totally wacky

Hah, completely insane but addictive. I just wanted to see where it went and admit, I got part of it. Poor Alice. Lol, baby Alice is too much and her luck was fifty fifty. Unlucky with losing a client and being blamed for it but lucky in that she survived all the craziness around her, including attempts on her life. Trying to keep her brother out of jail was, a home for an ugly dog, and stay off the radar would have flattened most people but she managed, barely.

If you like off the wall stories, this one was a hoot.

This was a fun cozy mystery. I loved Alice Sommerland. She was smart, witty, good at her job, a bit overly trusting, and more. There were so many quirky characters in Nowhere, good for a chuckle, support, and general entertainment to add to the story. It took a bit to figure out what happened, and it was a satisfying ending. I look forward to the next in the series.

Big Shot is book #1 in the A Big Murder Mystery series by Kirsten Weiss.

I really wanted to like this book. It seems like there was a bit of everything thrown in the story and made it a convoluted story. There were things like Alice not being a bodyguard, not wanting to talk about Koppel, and “The town of” Hot Springs were over used.

If you like quirky stories, you may really enjoy this.

This novel was fast-paced! The descriptions really brought the town and characters to life. It's the true definition of cozy: characters you have a kinship with and craziness that you only enjoy because you get to watch it not experience it. If you want something charming with quirky neighbors, this is the book!.

Alice had a very bad day as a personal protection agent which may change the course of her entire life. While she's trying to lay low, she heads for her home town of Nowhere. The comfort of memories is shattered when she discovers Nowhere has become a tourist attraction for Big Things. And of course, while trying to hide out, she discovers a dead body.

This book is loosely tied to Weiss' Wit's End books.

Big Shot is a super cute cozy mystery. Alice Sommerland, heroine, is relatable, smart, and funny. I love the town of Nowhere, NV. The residents are quirky and humorous. The way Kirsten Weiss writes her books make them hard to put down and Big Shot does not fail in that regard. There are twists and turns throughout the book that kept me entertained. I highly recommend Big Shot for a fun read.

*So?” Buck demanded. “What does truth have to do with anything?"

I'm sorry to say that this book had such a convoluted storyline I got kind of bored with it. It's a great diversion on a rainy day but I can't really recommend it. 3/5
