Zodiac Cove #1

A Touch Magical

Rate this book
Three hundred years ago, the people of Zodiac Cove gave up their magic to stop Ophiuchus’s curse from sinking their island into the sea. As the resident shopkeeper of witchy odds and ends, Audrey Raynor has always believed in the legend. But when an earthquake releases the magic that had been binding the curse, the legend suddenly gets very real.

The descendants of the Zodiac have the power to stop the curse, and Audrey has Scorpio’s water magic running through her veins. The problem? In order to access that magic, she has to touch Wes Latham—an arrogant Taurus who happens to be her ex-boyfriend’s brother and the man who betrayed her four years ago.

Wes was born and raised in the charming celestial town and has always thought the legend was a bunch of bull used to drive tourist dollars. Until the night he’s able to hold lightning in his hands. Now fate has paired him with Audrey, the woman he’s been in love with for over a decade, who couldn’t be more off-limits.

The price of using their magic comes with an especially difficult side effect: the inability to keep their hands off each other. But as their partnership begins to heat up, the curse seeps into their minds, exploiting the hurt they’ve caused each other. If they can’t find a way to work through the past and learn how to harness their magic in the present, the curse will finish what it started centuries ago.

I wrote this, I love this, and I'm giving it five stars because I put my all into this.

This is my first indie book and I'm so incredibly proud of it. It's by far, my steamiest book to date, and I love Wes and Audrey with my whole heart. I can't wait to share their story!

Thank you to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review

I would recommend if you're looking for (SPOILERS)

-m/f frenemies to idiots to lovers
-childhood unrequited crush
-mutula pining
-magical realism
-a curse
-magic that makes you horny
-fated mates elements

I really enjoyed this story. An adventure romance, taking place in our world on an island that used to have magic, and it suddenly arrives again. Wes and Audrey had such immediate chemistry, the story immediately pulls you in. I loved how the magic just upped the horniness that someone was already feeling as if to say stop being idiots and just be together already.

Wes was so sweet, soft, and just gone on Audrey giving her the time she needed to understand her feelings. I adore longtime crushes and these two needed a kick in the butt to get what everyone else was seeing. All while fighting the feelings that the magic brought out, understanding at the end of the day that that's how they really felt. I adored their HEA, and am so intrigued to see where this series goes with this curse and the rest of the members of the zodiac.

I hope on the license plates for Zodiac Cove it says, "This Place Bangs."

I blurbed A Touch Magical, but I couldn't resist adding a wee GR review too. You aren't even ready for this book, for this magical island of hot, loveable characters who simply cannot keep their hands off each other.

This book is my new happy place. I can't wait for the rest of the series!!

I picked this up after hearing about it from the Fated Mates podcast, Sonia was a sponsor. I generally stick to contemporary series, but, having just finished a big deep dark one, was in need of a palette cleanser and something completely different. I thought, why not give some paranormal/fantasy a try?

Boy, am I glad I did! This book is delightful and charming. It has the perfect touch of paranormal—there is magic, but these characters live in the modern world. They have magic, in the same way they have auburn hair or a job as a shopkeeper—it just exists. Romance Reasons. This is not a deep dive into complicated fantasy world building (although the ludicrous premise is phenomenal and so well thought-out), these character’s magic and the major conflict they’re up against just happens to also exist while these contemp romance characters try to navigate life and love.

Shoot it into my veins, it’s so lovely.

4⭐️ 3:5 🌶️.
Steamy scenes are frequent enough to satisfy, but incredibly rushed. Hoping further into the series the author learns to slow down and savor!

Even better the second time around. I love the magic and island lore. The cover is a work of art. The sex scenes are mmmmm…. Yummy. One of my absolute favorite authors.

Acquired Kindle edition when offered free on Amazon.

This was another 1.5 star read, reluctantly rounded up to 2.0 because it wasn't truly terrible. And I did sort of finish it.

So why the low rating? The writing wasn't terrible, and the paranormal plot was, um, okay, but two things -- or maybe three -- just completely did not work.

One, the paranormal world-building. This was a huge fail on a variety of elements. First, Zodiac Cove isn't a cove at all, it's an island. Supposedly the original zodiac entities -- gods? mages? -- lived there and then 300 years ago left because of a curse. Normally, I'd think of a curse as an inanimate abstraction, like a spell, that is put in place to do something to someone or something else. But a curse isn't an actual entity. Except in this book it is. It's apparently both an entity that's been locked away in a cave for 300 years and the power that's holding it locked up. I never really got a clear idea what the distinction between the two was.

Whatever they are or were, the zodiacs were magical and passed down their magical abilities to their descendants. These descendants stayed on/in Zodiac Cove but apparently couldn't really use their magic. But they knew about it, or sort of did, at least those who believed in the legends??

So then the curse manages to break out of its cave on the cove, because of course, and all hell breaks loose, but of course (of course) that also frees the magical powers of some of the descendants, who now have to figure out how to use these powers to put the curse back in its cave in the cove, all at the same time. (That's a tip of the hat to Jerry Lewis.) All this nonsense was just taken for granted through the entire book without any real WTF reactions from the characters.

Two, the f**king. All the f**king. So much f**king. MC Audrey is 27; MC Wes is 30. They act like over-hormoned teen-agers. Faced with the Destruction of the World as We Know It, they're still obsessed with having sex with each other. Anywhere. Everywhere. Any time. All the time. And there isn't much romantic about it; it's just f**king. F**king is fine in its place, but this was just . . . silly.

There was also the issue of Audrey being TSTL, which in this case means "too stubborn to live." Oh, sure, she overheard the actual conversation between Wes and his brother all those years ago and she knows what was said, but she's just plain not going to believe the truth? Well, of course not, because.

Three, the ending, which of course -- of course -- isn't an ending because this is a series and the whole threat of Destruction of the World as We Know It has to continue. So why have an Epilogue to a story that isn't finished?

And four, which I'm throwing in because I forgot about it at the beginning of this, has to do with this being the first book of the series. There are so many characters introduced in this book to set up the future volumes, but none of those characters ever reached a point of feeling like individuals who were going to play crucial roles in the following episodes. Maybe there should have been less emphasis on all the f**king and more attention paid to developing the players and the plot.

Finished only for a summer reading project; no intention of continuing with the f**king series.

This was ALL I wanted and expected the Nevermore Bookshop Mysteries Series Welcome to Nevermore Bookshop to be and never ever was!
I usually don't do these types of comparisons, but the irony is there. I had lots of hope for that series and none for this Zodiac Cove one. 🤷‍♀️😂
I gave up on the Nevermore series yesterday and picked up A Touch of Magical without much hope and boy was I surprised!!!

This is truly a paranormal (maybe a bit of fantasy) romance.

The paranormal part was great and brilliantly explored. The magic was super original and had interesting side effects for the inexperienced user 😏🔥.

The romance.... oh my! The romance!!! 💖💖🥵💖💖 Audrey and Wes have been in love since forever, but due to misunderstandings, Audrey dated his brother and has hated Wes for 4 years (the same time the relationship with the brother ended). Now they have to work together and start to trust each other. When they do, all I can tell you is FIREWORKS explode!
The chemistry between them is 🔥 and the smut is HOT. Their connection is everything!
Swoony to say the least.

I loved all the characters, even the secondary ones that were presented in this first book of the series without spoiling anything that is to come in later books.

Audrey was incredible and grows a lot during the book, letting go of grudges and learning to soften a bit. Wes was a sexy, steamy and strong teddy bear. Loved him.

The plot was great too. Really well developed and the sequence of "scenes" with the right pace and with enough plot to keep me totally addicted to the book. The world the author built was also very good, I could feel the ambiance and imagine everything around the characters, as well as the "rules of the game" within a paranormal world. *Side note* I should stop writing reviews at 3 a.m. because words are running away from me and I start using too many brackets. Hope you understand the idea 🙄

Why not 5 stars? Because, here and there (not always, but when it happened it was intense), there was lots of repetition. The same story told twice be each POV sometimes - 4 times I had to learn how someone said or did something in the past. If the plot wasn't as additive and the characters so great, I would have deduced yet another star.

So, now onto the next book in the series!

An interesting take on the Zodiac, and as a Scorpio I did love seeing a Scorpio tale the lead in this one!!!

Rating - 3.5 stars 🌟🌟🌟
Spice - 🌶🌶🌶

In this story we are dropped right smack in the middle of a little island, entrenched in zodiac lore. Lore I won’t spoil as it is actually quite interesting and a big part of the story. Lore that the island uses to keep tourists coming and money flowing to their individual shops, each named after a different zodiac constellation. And this is where we meet Audrey, a Scorpio who runs a new age mystic and second hand consignment shop. Who just so happens to be bathing in a hot spring right behind her shop/condo when her ex-friend and crush Wes stumbled upon her. In a strange turn of events though, a strange earthquake happens almost ending our main characters before our story even kicks off, and unleashing strange new powers in both Audrey and Wes. From there on a whole new magical adventure and a budding romance (years in the making) begins to unfold in an new and unexpected way. But that’s all I’ll say about the story as I don’t want to spoil anything, and it is worth the read.

I will say I did love both our main characters. Audrey, our Scorpio, embodies everything you think about when you think of a Scorpio. Secretive, thoughtful, loyal, the best grudge holder on the island, while still being incredibly pure hearted, at least to those she loves. I thought Audrey was amazingly well written, she was relatable and I loved that she was determined to master her magic not only for herself but to protect her town and the people she loved. I also enjoyed that she didn’t just give in to the romantic feelings she was feeling for our MMC, and made him work for her love and forgiveness after what he’d done. As for Wes, I really loved him to. He was the perfect amount of cinnamon roll and possessive alpha without being overbearing. He was understanding of Audrey being nervous to let him in again, while still holding onto that she can be mad and be mine at the same time attitude 😂. I also loved that he was willing to let go of some of his long held beliefs in order to trust in some of the new magic and things happening to him.

Overall, this was a well written book that I would recommend as a rainy day read when you want something quick to read that’ll get you out of a reading slump!

HAPPY READING!! 📖

This book was really cute. I love the enemies to lovers aspect and I feel like it definitely set up the series really well. The one drawback to this series is I want to skip around but I know that the overarching story will prevent that from being possible.

This book is kind of complicated to explain. Suffice it to say the hero and heroine always had a crush on each other but when the hero didn’t act on it, the heroine dated someone else. The hero intervened in the heroine’s relationship and she overheard and has never forgiven him. The couple is drawn together by their magic reawakening alongside a curse. Their love for each other rekindles because of their need to work together to wield their magic.

This was a really fun read. I didn’t like that the separation really relied on misunderstanding and a lack of action on the part of the hero. I did really like the current romance and the themes of the story. I loved that magical aspects and the way in which it drew the couple together.

I will definitely continue this series but I want to wait until I have more time to really get into it.

DNF @ 79%

So Zodiac Cove is apparently keeping some curse at bay and when it starts to break lose 12 descendants of the ancient zodiac are gifted powers to fight it back.

This is another one I really wanted to like but I ended up hating it. I get this this whole it's a small town and everyone is in each other's business and it's supposed to be cute but F@#! these people. Especially the ones who now know that the legends are true and that the curse is about to break loose are way more concerned about who this girl is sleeping with. I just didn't find it cute and I got tired waiting for the actual story to start because I didn't care about them sleeping together.

a touch magical

It was good and entertaining, very light. The story of how the island came to be is steeped in mythology. It’s acknowledged that it’s just a legend. All 12 descendants, previously unknown, of the zodiacs are one the island again. An earthquake happens that only they can feel and suddenly they’re like yeah I always knew there was magic. Not only that but they automatically know how to use their powers to beat a cursed shadow that was unleashed in the earthquake. Given that this will be a six book series, I suppose that there will be some mishaps; but, in this one, it seems the two MCs are magically perfect.

I first heard of this book from a very steamy Instagram post and I was immediately hooked. The first opportunity I had, I went and got it and read it in almost one sitting. It was definitely not what I was expecting, but I loved it even more for it. The story just sucks you into it and doesńt let you out, at least not until the very last page. Wes won my heart in the very moment he sprinted to Audrey and protected her … I was done for. Every following page I was just more and more invested. The following books are already in the library, ready to get devoured.

All these good reviews but not one matches my feelings.

This was crap. So many characters I'm supposed to care about but I don't. Theyre all so crappy and annoying. This didn't grab my attention one bit and I'm disappointed because I thought I was gonna love this.

You know when people make fun of zodiac people for being so annoying. "That's so Virgo of you." "Well duh you're an Aries of course you're passionate." This is that person in book form.

An attempt was, in fact, made here. It just… failed to land. And I failed to get past like the tenth chapter, which is more a testament to my ADHD than anything else, but in my defense, this book pulled one of most hated tricks…. All the fucking relationship development happens before the book even starts. Which can SOMETIMES work- but let me tell you, you better be giving me some HARDCORE relationship development before they actually “get together.” I just feel like we got none of that here.

Sonia wrote one of my favourite YAs of the past few years (Have a Little Faith in Me) so of course I wanted to see what she's doing in the adult fantasy romance space. I loved this sexy, atmospheric romance and it sets up the series so well. I'm trying to think of other things to say but I just keep coming back to the sex scenes. They are...very good. Some new faves to bookmark. 🌶️

This will not be for everyone. It’s EXTREMELY fast paced. If you love deep descriptions and fathomless world building this is not your jam. I’ll also mention this town is very heteronormative, I would have loved some more varied interpersonal relationship types, genders & sexuality.

There’s people in the book who are supposed to be spiritualists, artists, or hippy weirdos- and all of them read/behave too “normie.” I’m not sure if it was the “small town country bumpkin” filter given to pretty much everyone that made the alternative people seem not actually different from anyone else but it came off as “conventional person cosplays spiritualist/artist.”

Anyway I liked it a lot and I’m gonna keep reading the series.

Not really much for character development but enough that u are invested in them. Loved the whole zodiac thing and the steamy scenes did not disappoint 😏

Amazing start to a series!!!

This book was sexy and spicy and kept you guessing! The story is captivating from the very beginning! There's a lot of info to keep up with from the very beginning on but it sets up a ton of characters to be interested in and to keep tabs on for the upcoming books! Can't wait to read the rest!!!

I know they say to not judge a book by its cover, but this book was actually a lot better than the cover made me expect. It was quite smutty (to a fault), but I should have expected that based on the cover. The plot and magic were fun. I want to continue the series, but I don't have kindle unlimited and the price per book for how short they are seems a little excessive.

A Touch Magical

A refreshingly new take (for me anyway) about magic and the zodiacs. Plenty of action to be found, a magical curse to fight, and love to be discovered. I’m hooked on this book and I need to find out what happens next in the series.

I loved the idea of this but when Wes called Audrey baby .2 seconds into the book before they had talked through their issues, I was over it.

The sex was BORING and waaay too short for my liking. Idk, something about this story completely underwhelmed me.
