When the fae king comes for me...

My idea of a good time used to be a rom-com and pint of ice cream. But when a lethally sexy fae king kidnaps me, that changes. I’m forced to compete in a deadly competition to become his queen.

Now, my idea of a good time is surviving the day. The Court of Starlight and Darkness is a gorgeous place, but I can’t stay. The Ice King's eyes burn with heat each time he looks at me, and I burn right back. The problem? He's cruel and dangerous.

The king has no idea I’m human, and if he finds out, I’m dead. My only choice is to compete until I find a way to escape--I just need to survive until then.

A Forest of Stars is the first in a new trilogy by Linsey Hall.

"At least we know we look good," I said.
"For real."

That's about all I am getting from this. Pretty girls in weird costumes taking part in some even weirder fae competition in order to become queen. Sia and Merica should have ended up together, but since that's not going to happen, I am bowing out. Also, for a leading man, Lore had NO personality whatsoever! He just sat there... and brooded. It was very tiresome.

This book started out strong. It gave me some ACOTAR vibes but quickly got on my nerves. I HATED the way the Fae talked! They sounded more like cast members from The Real Housewives, not ancient beings from a different realm. Not for me. DNF @ 38%.

I love reading about the fae! A Forest of Stars is the first book in a new fantasy romance trilogy. This was a quick read, the action starts from the very beginning with Sia being kidnapped out of the blue from the human world by a sexy and powerful fae. Turns out he is the King of the Court of Starlight and Darkness and she needs to compete on the trials to be his future Queen, or else his kingdom is doomed.

The story is told in the point of views of both Sia and Lore, the fae king. This was great because then we get to see what's going on inside his handsome head 😜 i love that there were some similarities to Beauty & the Beast (my favorite fairytale). Lore has a powerful curse on him, his entire castle and servants are very obedient to him and all avoid mentioning his curse and his past...

The romance is slow burn, i love the intensity of their hate-to-love relationship. Sia hates Lore for kidnapping her and putting her in this life threatening situation, and Lore can't stand the fact that Sia burns the coldness that has been locked up for too long inside him...

"There's something about you that tears down the walls of my control. Every day, I think of you. I do not want to. I wish I had never met you. The coldness that has kept me sane is burning up in your presence, and I hate it. Yet I cannot stop it."

I tried I really did try to push myself though this disaster with the pretty cover. But it’s just not good. It reads like a fanfic written by a middle schooler. It has the most ridiculously cringe dialogue, the world building is not existing, the characters are not interesting. The idea was good, the execution was not at all. It’s mainly the cringy writing though. I dragged though like half I really wanted to finish it, but at some point after the second trial when Sia was called to the seers place the dialogue went something like “oh and how would you know such and such? I am a seer that’s how I know” I just couldn’t stop a facepalm coming….

This book has so many things I love finding in a fantasy…fae, royalty, a dangerous competition to become queen, magic, a brooding love interest…all good things 🙌 I did want a bit more substance to the romantic relationship, but as it is book one in a series I think we’ll get more in future books. There was also a huge cliffhanger so I def can’t wait until book 2!

Thanks to the author for sending me an eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

sia is a normal human living a normal human life—that is, until a fae king takes her away because fate demands she compete in a tournament to be his wife. now, a former movie reviewer is an undercover human in a world she didn’t even know existed competing in deadly competitions for a position she doesn’t even want.

this was a super fast read and i probably could’ve binged it in a couple hours if i didn’t have anything else to do today. objectively speaking, this wasn’t the best book centered on fae i’ve read, as there wasn’t much in terms of worldbuilding and the fae kinda seemed like humans with pointy ears and a bit of magic, but i did have a lot of fun reading it. the tension between sia and lore (the king) was killing me and i can’t wait to see where their story goes in the next book, especially after that ending!!

Who hasn't wished for a sexy fae man to come and steal them away and thus propel you into your very own enemies to lovers arc? That is exactly what you get in this book!

I think Hall is such a good writer and I know that I'll always be entertained by her stories. This one did not disappoint. I'm usually not into competition type romances, but I found myself enjoying this one despite that.

This book is a quick read and left me dying for the sequel!

This was ok! But the story felt loosely wound. The stakes weren't very high because of how predictable it was. Everyone fell into the boxes they'd been assigned. I've read so much fae themed fantasy at this point I need something to really knock my socks off to stand out. And none of this did that, unfortunately. If you're new to the genre, though, you may really enjoy this.

A FOREST OF STARS drew me in immediately from its premise. I love fae books, and loved the idea of a competition to find a queen for the fae king. This is the perfect book for a quick binge. The pacing is quick, and the story serves an interesting plot. I was completely drawn in by the court setting (we have a ball scene! *insert screaming*) and the mystery surrounding the curse upon the fae king, Lore. I also really appreciated the exciting action linked to the challenges and the way the author wove elements of fairytales and stories, such as Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland so seamlessly into her narration. I never thought I’d obsess over the idea of a fae Cinderella, but here we are!

While I’m fully invested in the world, the characters, haven’t completely won me over yet. I familiarized with Sia on certain things, such as her love of rom-coms and books, but I feel like we don’t know much else about her life before the fae court, which didn’t sell me on her motivation to return to it. I also would have liked to see her struggle more to adapt to her new circumstances, whereas Sia seems to have a natural talent for both the physicality and cunning of living with the fae. I had the same struggle with Lore. He has all the right qualities (broody, tormented, silver-haired) but I don’t feel like I know enough about him as a person. While I did enjoy the scenes with Sia and Lore and love their banter, I’m going to need more from them individually before I can become fully invested in their romance.

The book ends on an incredible cliffhanger, and I think the things I was struggling with in this first installment will be addressed in the sequel, so I’m very excited to see where the story is headed!

Thank you to the author for gifting me an e-arc. All opinions are my own.

Save your time and skip it

Honestly I find nothing likeable about this book. The writing was dry and the characters were cliche'. I speed read through it halfway and gave up. Glad it was a freebie with Kindle Unlimited. The only redeeming quality is the exquisite book cover.

THIS BOOK y'all, from the overall premise to that cliffhanger ending--I am OBSESSED.

I absolutely loved how the author wastes zero time whisking us into the Fae realm. The action is immediate, as well as the chemistry between Sia and Lore, plus the high-stakes competition helps perpetuate the fast-paced atmosphere. I also absolutely adored the steadfast friendship between Meria and Sia; the trials and adventures they take on together were so much fascinating fun. Once I started this one, I sincerely couldn't tear myself away!

This book is perfect for fans of The Folk of the Air series, and anyone who loves dark, twisted classic fairytales like Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.

First in this new series set in a Fae kingdom and boy was I happy about that. Sia is human but due to an obscure prophecy finds herself kidnapped and placed in a bizarre competition to become Queen ! Trouble is Lore the silver haired King doesn't really want a wife and he finds himself wanting what could destroy his control and yep you've guessed it that's Sia !
This was pretty fast paced with a likeable, gutsy heroine who finds herself doing things she never dreamed of. Sia quickly ( too quickly ?) finds an ally and they work as a team . Sia is desperate to go home so things should work out but with strange magic in play and fierce competition I think the ending was pretty much a given. Theres clearly a lot of mutual attraction here but not really romance so I'm hoping for much more interaction between the couple in the next book as everything is clearly about to hit the fan !
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Fae books are definitely one of my favorite to read. The plot based on competitors within the realm. I loved the atmosphere of the world. Of course there’s sexy fae, I mean when is this not a thing in fae books *smirk*.

The characters had a great build up, there was a peak at what the romance is gonna look like moving forward. I enjoyed the dynamic between Sia, Lore, and Dain.. hopefully in book 2 we learn more about the characters! I am looking forward to continuing this series

Huge thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.

Well, this is the first high fae romantasy series that I've read in a while that actually has some other books out already, so yay! I can continue on without waiting for half a year!

The quick pacing from the beginning ensures that we are ready to jump on the rollercoaster and get straight to fae-land. Give it a few chapters and you will bond with some of the characters (though I hope some of the other fae in the competition are given some page time in the coming books). The strong, female friendship theme was a firm hook for me, and I hope the relationship between the MC/ and our side heroine continues to unfold and deepen.

There are plenty of hints that smut or spice will come soon, which I am hoping for. I really like the thought that went into the challenges in this competitive/"Bachelor-esque" rendition of "who will be queen." There are a lot of fairy-tale references, and it is clear that the author is well-traveled as demonstrated through the engaging landscapes she describes (I believe she said the fae world was inspired by Orcas Island.). At first, it seemed very quick to dive into the world, and it made me wonder if the story would develop, but Linsey Hall was there to catch me as she crafted her action scenes to deepen plots and relationships. I really enjoy that delivery style instead of the rote palace monologue.

I'm rooting for a threesome honestly, but no matter what, I can't wait to see what is going to happen with that cliffhanger at the end and what it will mean politically/socially for the MC.

It was good, but predictable. Sia is your stereotypical ever righteous, self sacrificing altruistic heroin. Lore is your big bad brooding fae.
Neither character has much depth.
It’s slightly steamy but not full on smut for sure.
The story is very fast paced, but I would have appreciated more world building. More of the enemies trope. More uncertainty and tangents to throw the reader for a spin.
Hope the 2nd book can deliver on this!

I'm not even sure where to start with this one. I finished this novel within 5 hours and I am not sure if it was because I just wanted it to end or if I kinda, sorta, forced myself to like it? Sia is our protagonist and while in the middle of a bar looking for some guy who supposedly had information for her about her biological parents, suddenly gets carried away out of said bar by Lore, a king, on his back, and transported into the Court of Starlight and Darkness. Sia, a human, or so she thinks, is fated to compete in a series of challenges (think Hunger Games) and the winner is crowned queen. Easy enough? Well, it is easy enough because we get zero back story on anyone or anything except how King Lore used to be a man-whore and during a threesome got a bunch of people killed. There was zero world building; zero back story; I was just left with wanting more which is why I am so torn about this one. It really had the potential to be a great story if there was just simply more to offer. For a younger reader wanting to dip their feet into the fantasy genre for the first time and who also enjoys cliché romantic tropes, I'd recommend this book in a heartbeat. But for those of us who read fantasy and paranormal genres avidly, this just does not do it for me. To start, the modern teenager language/slang used throughout the novel was a huge pass for me. Sia came off as a bratty teenager more times that I cared for and she was suppose to be a 25 y/o who just awed a centuries old king with what, her teenager angst? Just no. Maybe if I got a glimpse into her life, her history, I'd have more to work with and (maybe?) understand her decisions, but we unfortunately get squat. Same with Meria, her only friend and companion during the challenges. I was dying to know more about her story and family and why she was so desperate to save them, but again, nothing. Dain? Nothing. This evil witch lurking? Nothing. The friggin' Court of Darkness and Starlight? Nope. Vusario? Nothing? Great. Interestingly, in the authors note at the end, Hall mentions the setting is an actual representation of an island she visited. Where was all the magic of that island in this book? It's like making a recipe without adding the ingredients! I'm left with a bitter, blah taste in my mouth wanting more...more salt...more pepper...something! Take a couple pages to world-build and construct your characters (Creative Writing 101??). Despite all the above and minor grammar and editing mistakes, this book had huge potential. But, am I going to buy book 2 in hopes I get my questions and proclamations answered? You darn right I am. Therefore, I will be saying my prayers tonight in hopes I am not let down once again. Wish me luck and I'll see you in part 2!

I could not put this down!

I was hooked from the opening chapter, and the story just kept getting better and better. Sia, our FMC, has been living a sad and lonely life. A product of the foster care system, she never knew her family and wants to find them. While she’s on her quest, she gets kidnapped by a fae king and finds herself thrust into a faerie version of jumanji where some losers will die, but the winner is crowned queen.

I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. First, Sia. She’s one of those heroines that are actually very strong, but doesn’t know they are. She’s very self-reliant, probably a product of her upbringing. And she does try to find humor, or at least the bright side, in the most mundane of things, probably also because of her upbringing. The thoughts that we are privy to sometimes are actually quite funny, particularly when she finds herself in the Fae realm, in the Court of starlight and darkness.

Of course our fae king, Lore, is the most gorgeous man she’s ever seen. But then everyone in the fae realm seems to be extremely good looking. He’s got a host of demons of his own, and at times it makes him seem ice cold and unapproachable. However once Sia comes on the scene things take quite a turn for him, and I’m here for every delicious moment of it. The big surprise to Sia, is how she feels so much at home in the fae realm. Most shocking of all, is the fact that magic sparks for her while she’s there. Who knew?!

World building is very good. As this is a series of books, we usually don’t get everything in the first book, however there is enough to keep me very interested and anxious to get my hands on book 2. There is an approaching evil to the fae court, and Sia seems to be in the center of the fight that will save the people. Character building is also fairly well rounded, although I suspect that there is much more to Sia that we will come across in the coming books. Another bright spot in this book, is an unlikely ally that Sia finds in her roommate, Meria. The friendship that sparks between these two, and is deepened through their partnership during the competition, was very refreshing and warmed the cockles of my heart.

The book ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to see what happens between our main couple, and how they weather the approaching storm. I do highly recommend this book, I know I couldn’t put it down once I started. Oh, if you’re looking for some steam, there is only a single kiss in this book. But I didn’t even care, it was that good.

The moment I found out about this book, I was immediately intrigued. Fae, royals, magical kingdoms. These are things I love to read about. Add a competition to become queen to the mix, and you make me a very happy reader.

The story was fast pace and full of exciting action. I loved this world’s aesthetic, and the elements of fairytale woven into it. The romance is also off to a promising start. There’s not much yet, but the attraction is undeniable and there’s enough tension to promise amazing steam in the following books. However, I would have liked to see a bit more of Sia and Lore as individuals before the plot picked up—some moments of Sia’s life in the human realm, and something of Lore as king and his friendship with Dain. (Especially since Best Friend Dain immediately sets his eyes on Sia, too. I was missing the bromance, and therefore the drama that such a thing could have caused.) Though I loved this book’s fast pace, I felt like within all the action I didn’t really get to know Sia and Lore well enough to fully be invested yet.

Thank you to the author for sending me an eARC. Opinions are my own!

Magical

This book had me gripped from the beginning, it follows the story of sia and lore, sia was snatched from the human world to participate in a fae competition to become Queen of the kingdom of starlight and darkness. She didn't ask for this and she didn't want to be married to the obnoxious King lore. Plus she isn't a fae she's human and if she gets found out she could be killed. She starts to like this enchanting word as she discovers things about herself she didn't know was there. But she is highly attracted to dain the second in command and the Kong lore himself. There is so much magic in this world. But can she survive this world and what has fate got in store for her?
I really did enjoy reading this book, completing it rather quickly for me. My favourite character was meria, she didn't judge sia for the mistake the King made and decided to help sia despite her being human, my least favourite character was lore I understand what's happening is confusing but he doesn't need to act the way he has.
I would definitely recommend the book to anyone that likes the magical genre and I genuinely can't wait to engulf myself in the next installment

This one isn’t for me.

I didn’t find the world very interesting, the characters felt very generic and lacking depth and the dialogue just didn’t feel natural.

Mostly the King, Lore lacked any character to me at all. His dialogue is very wooden, he does nothing in this story except brood and complain and he has no chemistry with any of the characters, especially Sia who he’s supposed to have a slow burn relationship with.

Sometimes the ending of this style book is enough to make me read on in the series but this one felt flat to me.

an interesting and titillating story

I loved the fast paced plot, the adventure of the challenges and the character’s especially Sia and Meria.
The ending was as I thought so it left me excited for the next adventure, it’s only going to get better.

For the most part I liked this book. Lore is a huge douche though. I do hope he gets better. For being centuries old he sure is childish. Sia is funny and gutsy. I hope she become more kick butt as she learns more about her powers. I will definitely plan on continuing the series.
