Widowed at seventeen, a mother at eighteen, Lady Helen Chadwick well knew that she must take care, especially when she was so dependent upon others. One wrong act could have her and her young daughter cast out. Cast into the unknown with no home and no living. Thankfully, nothing exciting ever happened on the coast of West Devon.
Captain, Lord Duncan Davenport has returned from war. Returned to the boisterous loud Davenport Clan. But what he truly needs is to find peace. To find someway to live with the guilt that tears at him. His only hope is that the quiet of West Devon will give him time to heal.
Two people who find each other when they least expected it. Only to be pulled apart by fate.
This story was painful to read because of the lack of complete sentences, use of McMillen and later McMillan for a character's name, periods for punctuation in lieu of question marks, and this notable simile: the smell was worse than a French musket ball between the eyes. I skimmed to the end.
Lady Helen Chadwick has been thru a lot in the last four years. She has been married to a stranger had a daughter and also been widowed. All by twenty two. Now she has to live with her late husbands cousin and his wife. Neither are very nice to her and her daughter. But it is a roof over their heads and food. Nothing more. She tries to stay out of their ways till Helen, tells her it's time she marry again !! What, now what is she to do, Charles could send Emily her daughter away to school if she doesn't do as told again. To find time alone she take a walk on the cliffs of Devon to think. Then she meets a very handsome man, who looks like he is carrying the weight of the world on his strong shoulders. As they pass each other both feel an immediate attraction to the other. Neither or in a place to do more. He thinks her a farmers daughter and she has no idea who he is other then he is very sad. At a house party they learn both were wrong, she is a lady and he is a brother to a duke. As they meet and become friends, then more both finding what they need in the other. Then tragedy hits alone with others not wanting them to be together. Will all be lost ?? This is a wonderful story of two people who deserve more then they have. The love and friendship and caring between is wonderful. Emily is a treat to watch how she adds a lot to the story. With the twist and turns and some very nasty, hurtful people this is a fast read. I hope you don't miss this one. I know I will be re-reading it again. I received and Arc from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
A predictable Recency romance storyline. To find this the third book in a series with so many issues is disturbing. It was frought with poor sentence structure, lacking spelling and grammar skills, and was riddled with punctuation that badly needs, at minimum, a high school education.
Just because romances are popular, doesn't mean they should be written, moreover badly. There is a reason not everyone can create Bridgerton or Outlander - they simply don't have the skill.
This reader feels that attention should also be paid to scene development, action sequences, and logical progression of the story. There were several poorly developed scenes that jumped from one thing to another, leaving far too many loose ends.
The author would greatly benefit from college level English and writing classes, professional editorial skills and close attention to detail. There is potential, but it needs much refinement.
Two loss souls and delightful little girl. This book takes place just after the first defeat of Napoleon and just before Waterloo. Waterloo will play a part in the final part of the book. Duncan has returned home but the horrors of war are deep inside him. Wanting to try and get a grip on his feeling he goes to the family estate in Devon and here he will meet Helen. Helen a widow with a small child are the unwanted guests of the new baron. They meet by chance and perhaps brought together by a child. Super great characters and wonderful storytelling this book was a delight to read. Not till the very end will you know what will happen to Duncan and Helen but like the captain I was captivated by the book. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.
Helen’s relatives were selfish self serving awful people who treated her and her little daughter Emily as poor relations. Helen has a chance meeting with Duncan and there is an instant connection that is further by additional meetings and Emily. They become lovers and he never speaks of marriage, not considering that he could leave her pregnant and that her marriage options provided by her cousin’s spendthrift wife are both bad. He keep thinking that emotionally he would never be able to marry her, but was fine with potentially leaving her ruined. I loved precocious little Emily who had a joy for life despite the poverty and relatives she has to deal with.
I absolutely loved Helen and Duncan’s story. Helen lost her husband to war 4 years ago. Her husbands cousins and his wife is encouraging her to remarry. Duncan made it through war but his life is changed. He is angry, hurt that so many of his men died and he lived. He has the guilt he can’t get rid of so he decides to go the one of there furtherest estates to be alone. What he didn’t expect is to meet Lady Helen who seems to calm him in a way no has been able to. A wonderful, tear jerking story. Love the ending.
This story is about a young widow, Helen, with a daughter, Emily. She meets the Captain, Duncan, first while walking the cliffs and the story goes from there. In the end they find their hea. She seemed liked she was concerned about being proper etc. as yet she does hesitate intimacy with him twice despite not expecting anything from him and then she allows herself to be forced into a married by her in laws because she is worried about what it will link like if she refuses. I don’t know these characters didn’t really impress me
Excellent story marred by an extraordinary lack of editing
It upsets me when I come upon a book with a promising storyline, appealing and well-formed characters, and a nicely-done settling, which is then virtually ruined by a thoroughly complete lack of editing. This was such a book. The author could have had a 5-star gem if only she’d hired a good editor to clean up her work. Instead, this one had me shaking my head after every other sentence, re-reading to make sure I hadn’t missed something. Unfortunate.
Overall, Captivated by the Captain is an okay read. It is more wordy than I like, but Helen and Duncan are both very likable. Helen's little girl is especially cute. Duncan's PTSD (before there was a name for it) is handled well by author G.L. Snodgrass. Their story has it's ups and downs, but in the end they have a smile-worthy HEA.
Content 411: In addition to secular and religious swearing, there are a couple of on screen sex scenes.
It's a sweet romance that it's told in a fantastic story with good characters. For one the obligatory child character isn't obnoxious.
My only complaint is this book is in desperate need of a good editor. There's cases of the wrong word making it last spell check, questionable grammar, and punctuation issues. Otherwise, this would easily be a 5/5.
Really loving this series. I found G.L. Snodgrass not to long ago and have loved every read.
I loved these characters. Such a great read. The only thing, I would have loved to have read Mildred's reaction to the news at the end. I felt that would have been icing on the cake.
Still great read. Can't wait for more by G.L. Snodgrass.
I Love reading this author's books . They always involve ever thing I require, such as romance, action, history, mystery, rivalry, and not a lot of sex, but just enough. The books are short enough not to be boring. I love reading her books over and over. This Book is a good example of everything I just mentioned.
He had returned home from a he'll ish war and was so tormented that he needed to remove himself to the country away from his family. She was afraid she would have to marry again, her husbands cousin would only support her and her daughter so long. I enjoyed these two people who dare to hope who dare to love.
Helen and Duncan' s story is one of growing love and respect though over a short period of tme. Helen is a widow with a young daughter who was only surviving life on her husbands family charity. Duncan returned from war broken and no desire for life until he met Helen. They grow to admire and love each other but fate does not always work in their favor. The story will keep you reading to the end. Enjoy!
While the Regentcy is filled with balls and husband hunting it was also filled with the terrible drain and sadness of war. This love story captured both.
