A wonderful end to a heart-wrenching series!
Bethany Atazadeh has brought Jezebel's villain origin story to a close and with it, absolutely shattered my heart. It's truly special and the mark of great writing that I could go from disliking Jezebel quite a bit in 'The Stolen Kingdom' series to having sympathy and wishing for a kinder end for 'The Queen's Rise' and for Jezebel herself.
Wonderful way to cap off a series!

Bethany Atazadeh has outdone herself in this action-packed finale to her villain origin story. "The Secret Curse" is a great read, even as I devoured it as a standalone book without reading the two prior books in this three-part series, "The Queen's Rise".
I recently read her first book in "The Stolen Kingdom" series and finished it with mixed feelings on the plot pacing, cultural inconsistencies, and character development.
In contrast, "The Secret Curse" has shown me just how excellent Atazadeh's writing is and how much she has grown in her skills throughout writing these two series. The action pace of this book felt right. The main character was vulnerable emotionally, but strong-willed where she needed to be. Koda is the right dose of caring and dangerous. How Atazadeh set up the culture of both groups and contrasted the Khaanevaade to the Jinni was excellent. I felt invested in the Vaade as Jezebel spent time with them. The twist ending left me shocked but also pushed me to read quickly so I could find out what happened next in Jezebel's story.
THE ENDING DOES NOT DISAPPOINT! It fills you with all those excited fluttery book feelings and leaves you wanting more!
Now that I've had this taste of the wicked side of Jezebel, I'm going to go back and read Part 1 and Part 2. I can't wait to dive back into Jezebel's character and read what I missed out on in her backstory. This book has also convinced me to go back and finish "The Stolen Kingdom" series too!

Reviewing the last book in a series is so hard! It would be too easy to spoil it, so I'm treading delicately. This is the best book Bethany has written, and I gave every book in both The Stolen Kingdom and The Queen's Rise series 5 stars. So this is the best of the best. You can tell just how much she cares about telling the story of how the queen became who she is. Her writing has improved over time, and now that this series is complete, I want to go back and reread The Stolen Kingdom.
If you like loose fairytale retellings and magic and secrets and scheming, I recommend both series so so much!

I zipped through this book although I was trying to pace myself. Such a compelling and beautiful ending to Jezebel’s backstory. I had no idea how the story would be able to wrap itself up and all my guesses were wrong ;) I loved every minute of it and look forward to rereading the whole series again.

This was the ending this series needed! And that's DEFINITELY NOT what I was expecting!! Here are my thoughts ~
Loved the Khaanenvaade and the whole dynamic between Koda and Jez. That's the kind of stuff I love to read!
Style-wise, I could read that kind of writing style all day long!
As for the plot... I squealed, I gasped, I cried. It's always a roller-coaster with Jezebel, and it always keeps me flipping those pages!!
However, her dependence on Koda seemed a bit out of character for her, because she proved herself very independent in the past stories.
The whole curse part got kind of confusing and it was a lot of information. A glossary could be helpful. And THAT ENDING. It went too fast for me!
Content Warnings: mention of nakedness, curses, magic, spells, some violence.
Half a star off because there are no redeeming themes in this book, however I do realize that this is a villain origin story.

Warning: too relatable, might make you cry
This book. Just wow. Took me on a ride that took my emotions on SO many rides 😅 I wanted to scream and cry and melt and all the things. Beware that's all I have to say. You're going to like, hate, love, despise and laugh all through this book.

This book was a perfect ending! I was so captivated that the twists left my jaw hanging on the floor and I felt so bad for multiple characters. I just wished Jezebel wasn’t a villain but I knew that going into the series so I didn’t let myself become attached to her. However, this enemy to friends romance with twists and slow burn was PERFECTION!

I was trying to guess how it would end but I was wrong, it ended better though.
You can’t missed this book and the whole series. You know what? Read the Stolen Kingdom series too. It all comes together nicely.

This was my least favorite in the series. I didn't love the plotline in this one, I was bored during a lot of it and I was getting annoyed with Jezebel.

The last book of The Queen's Rise series, The Secret Curse closes out Jezebel's journey to villain hood with plenty of twists, betrayals, and secrets, and I'm sad that one of my favorite villain origin stories is over.
In this installment, Jezebel is about ready to marry Prince Shem, but a series of attacks is putting this on hold, but soon, it's the least of her worries. Once again, this was a mostly fast paced ride and it's full of twists and interesting characters. Once we find out about the curse itself, things really pick up and despite knowing Jezebel would turn into a villain at some point, it crushed me when it happened and I understood why she went the path she did, as it's more out of desperation. Overall, she was a well crafted character and it's one of my favorite protagonist journey to villain arcs. The other characters were well written too and served their purpose, as well as how nearly all of them have their secret sides, fitting into the themes of secrets and betrayal, as the rest of the series has connected to. The magic system and world building were intriguing, and I love how we dig into more of it and it makes a connection to another one of her books in the same universe. The only issue was that some of the story felt a little slow in the second quarter, but we still got to know more characters.
If you've been following this series and want to see where the story ends, don't miss this one!

What a heartbreaking and tragic conclusion to the story of Jezebel! I enjoyed reading this series. Worth reading. I personally preferred The Stolen Kingdom series but I enjoyed this prequel series enough. The writing was fine. Perhaps the story just wasn't for me. It was still interesting enough to read. Poor Jezebel! She endured so much betrayal.

After the previous book from the series that ends on an amazing note, I was eager to find out more about Jezebel. The Cursed Hunter book from The Stolen Kingdom (companion series) holds a few links to this book. So I was aware of the significant events and knew what to expect. I was curious to know how the story leads to those events. And oh my god it's amazing.
I loved reading about the Khaanevaade people and Jezebel's time with them. Bethany has done it again. Her writing is enchanting.
Though you can read The Queen's Rise on its own and you'll enjoy it too, but...you'll fall in love with this series if you read The Stolen Kingdom series first. Highly recommend binging both series.

I'm so utterly devastated. Completely destroyed. I can't believe all that happened in this book. Bel deserved to be happy! Why did everyone betray her over and over again? Proving that people can't be trusted. She could have been so good, so amazing! My heart is broken because I know I will hate her in the next series. I can't even believe all the crap that happened. Believe did so much for Shem, for the Jinn, for Koda and his people. And yet, she was betrayed over and over again. She deserved to be happy. She made mistakes, but she made those because she was afraid and didn't know better. Her choices out of fear and the resentment people showed her didn't allow for her to be different. I hate what she is turning into and what she will be. No one deserves that. She could have been happy with Koda had he chosen not to betray her like Shem and everyone else. She even tried to fix her mistake, and yet again, she was hurt. Villians aren't born. They are made.

Wow! The Queen's Rise has been such an eye opening prequel series, especially for those who have already read The Stolen Kingdom series and know that version of Jezebel. This villain origin story has been one whirlwind moment after another, and I love how much more of a better understanding I have for her. It is truly making me want to reread those books now and catch the things I may I have missed! Overall, The Secret Curse had me hooked from page 1, and by the end, I cannot tell you how many times my jaw dropped. The moments almost made me forget that Jezebel's future was already set as I rooted for a much needed HEA. I also really enjoyed the dive into more characters and lore of this world. I am completely satisfied with this incredible prequel, and I cannot wait to see what is next by this author!

I have always loved a good villain story, if there's no villain then the story is bland and I'm so happy that Bethany decided to give us Jezebel's story in three parts!
The ending wasn't what I was expecting but when Jez met Koda I knew something was up from reading The Stolen Kingdom series but wasn't sure where it was going or how we were going to get to the end.
I loved seeing Jez grow from being so scared about her gift and so tired of being used into a powerful woman. It's very inspiring and makes me love her even more.
While I didn't want it to end everything has come full circle and the questions I had in The Stolen Kingdom now make sense.
This was a beautiful series. I can't wait to see what's next now that this one is 'over'.

I love the depth of Jezebel's character, and how much she struggled with her decisions. I know that this is her 'villain origin story' but my goodness, I couldn't help rooting for her to have her cake and eat it too!

The first book in this series was a soft opening into the power that Jezebel possesses!
This book is written so well, beautifully paced, giving me exactly what I wanted when I wanted it.
My mind was doing back flips trying to figure out exactly how this would end, and honestly I was shocked! Why I didn't see this coming I don't know!
My jaw dragged the floor for hours!
If you want a series/book to give you all the jaw dropping, gasping, gut wrenching butterflies this is it!

Good girl gone bad
This contains some spoilers....
This is the first villain origin I've read. I've seen movies of villain origins from Cruella to Maleficent.
When you are constantly being hurt any more ways than one, it can lead you in two different paths.
On one side, you can take the positive side and make things better, but for those like Cruella, Maleficent and most villains, they dive into the cave of despair and mistrust.
They was Jezzy kept saying she had no choice made me roll my eyes, there's always a choice. You just took the easy way out which cause the downfall into become something you hated
Her lack of trust and constant secrets, cause her to spiral out of control. She's down unforgivable things and it's a sad way to be.
I enjoyed reading this series. Bethany did such a great job with these three books.
You feel for each character including Jezebel herself, but just because I understand her pov doesn't mean I accept her horrible behavior.
I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next and hopefully seeing her defeated.

Wow! Throughout this series, I’ve grown more and more impressed with Bethany’s writing, but this one definitely takes the cake!
Through most of the book, I was wondering how Jezebel was going to take a villain arc, and then the twist happened! I definitely didn’t see it coming. I may or may not have gasped out loud (which is rare for me)!
The character interactions were well done, the plot moved at a good pace, and I felt rooted in Jezebel’s thought process.
If you are looking for a well-crafted villain arc, The Queen’s Rise trilogy is an amazing choice!

The ending!!!

Bethany truly brought Jezebel full circle from an innocent Jinni girl to the beginnings of an incredible villain! Having read the Stolen Kingdom series before the Queen’s Rise series, it was interesting to see Jezebel’s beginnings.

This was a wonderful series to read. Despite knowing Jezebel's future, Bethany was able to produce elements of mystery that kept me guessing to the end. The third and final installment seemed to go in one direction and I was certain I understood the path it would take our main character. Nope! It switched into a very different direction. Thanks, Bethany, for another great series!

It was heart wrenching to follow Jezebel deeper in to the betrayal and misunderstandings that carved her in to what she is. So well done. I wanted to strangle all of the characters at some points and other huge them and fox their world.

Wow…
The heartaches and betrayals that Jezebel has encountered throughout the series reached a new peak as her story raced to a close in this thrilling read! I loved the story and I felt what she felt when forced to make the ultimate hard decisions…

It’s okay, I didn’t need my heart to work anyway…
But for real. I could not read fast enough to find out what happened next. Do I despise Jezabel now? Yes. Do I feel bad for her? Also yes. Everyone in this book needs a hug and therapy.

5/5 ⭐ Wow. Now THAT is the ending to a villain origin story. It's everything I wanted in this series. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It's romantic, dark, and shows exactly how Jezebel came to be the tyrant queen in The Stolen Kingdom series. And Koda is sort of fantastic too...

All I have to say is that did I see the heartbreak coming? Yes. Was I prepared? No. And now I'm sad the series is over. :c

Gave three guys each a chance, and they blew it 💀 I was really rooting for Koda to be the one for her, but AGGHHHHH JUST WHY?! 😭💔
And since I haven't read the sequel yet which came out before this, I just hope I get to read that closure with Koda that was left hanging in the ending 🥲
