Mother of the Moon

Rate this book
A Voyage Beyond the Veil. A Gauntlet to end a God. A Sacrifice to Save a Soul.

It’s been three months since Captain Ronan Mathonwy lost his wife to Death’s domain. Three months of unanswered prayers and foiled plans, three months of desperate loneliness and darkening skies. As Ronan searches night and day for a way to raise the dead, the Deyrnas suffers from the blight of Morwyn Locasta and her shadow-puppets, Porthladd’s fall only the beginning of her reign of terror. While gods and monsters roam the isles of men, it is left to Griffin and the rest of the crew to step up and save their world from a grim, unimaginable fate. But without Keira and Ronan’s aid, they’re only left with their steel and salt-blooded determination to defy the queen of shadows.

In the icy depths of the Otherworld, another war is being waged, one battled with seductive smiles and frozen fears. Beyond the veil, even the most vicious monsters can look like friends. Trapped in the gilded cage of Arawn’s keep, lost in the space between reality and illusion, Keira must fight off the god of death and his enchanting ways– or risk losing herself to the darkness within.

Yet even on the brink of total ruin, there is hope in the small victories. A gate at the bottom of the sea. A god at the top of a mountain. A girl in the belly of the beast. A gun that devours souls. United even when divided, the crew must discard the chains of who they once were to grow into the legends they are fated to become. To save their families, their people, and their hearts, mortals must become myths strong enough to slay a god.

Only love can survive all odds.

Growing up on the east coast in small-town New Jersey, Lina spent her early days playing pretend and making up stories for her friends and family, a pastime that would soon turn into a lifelong passion for storytelling in all its forms. A recovering theatre kid at heart and a therapist by profession, Lina loves the study of human behavior and relationships, infusing both into her writing craft. "The Dark God has returned to the land of living."

This is a three POV book, told by the POV´s of Ronan, Keira and Griffin.

Ronan is such a book boyfriend, already said it about the first book and it´s only becoming clearer and clearer throughout the series. I don´t think there is anything he wouldn´t do for his wife. Keira is his perfect counter part, I liked her character development and seeing a slightly more softer and caring side to her but still have the ruthless pirate captain shine through every now and then. I absolutely love Griffin, his journey is filled with a lot of character development as well and I love the relationship between him and Rhett. They are the cutest.

I really liked Finna in this one and I enjoyed to learn more about the side characters in general from the previous books in the series. One thing I didn´t enjoy as much this time was Reagan´s sidestory, I wish some things would have been explained a bit more.

I really liked this ending to the story. Pirates, sirens and even dragons, this book has it all and ties all the ends together quite beautifully. There are some nice action scenes and overall the pacing felt good; only some parts felt a little slow to me. I would say this book balances action and character driven elements quite well and I enjoyed my time reading it. However there aren´t any smut or spice scenes in this, which I somehow had expected with my experience from the other two books. One of the plot twists at the end felt a little bit like filler material to me and wouldn´t have been needed in my opinion. Otherwise the ending was really beautiful. You even get a "One year later" epilogue to close it all of.

Overall it was a beautiful ending to one of my favorite pirate fantasy series so far.

Mother of the Moon is a solid conclusion to a series that I am sad to say has ended. From the first book, Daughter of the Deep, I knew that this series would be epic and filled with adventure and the final installment definitely did not disappoint!

I’ve said it before, but Amarego’s writing really thrives with her character development. I’m usually not a big fan of character-driven books, but I think that this story succeeds because of it. Mother of the Moon has a great balance of exploration of character and emotional depth, even more so now that the stakes have changed. You can really sense the pull from each one of the characters, and I feel like this is a huge part of what makes this story stand out.

This book switches between character POV’s which I loved! I feel like there was a lot of buildup in the chapters, which encouraged me to want to keep reading and discover what happened next. I liked that the stakes seemed much higher and started off right where Sister of the Stars ended. There is a lot that happens, but I think the author does a good job of pacing and drawing out the important moments.

Overall, if you are a fan of the other two books in the series this final conclusion is one you don’t want to miss out on. It was such a heartwarming, but also intense and equally satisfying adventure to the ending of the Children of Lyr series.

There was way too much moping, which is what i felt the characters basically did throughout the entire second book. I just couldn’t stomach it another time, especially with how much longer this book is compared to the others.

This book is among the best fantasy books I've ever read, and it is one of the finest conclusions to one of the most incredible series I have ever seen. On the whole, Mother of the Moon is an absolute must-read for anyone who enjoys star-crossed lovers fighting to stay together and blood and found family fighting for each other in the face of horrible odds. This book is the ultimate conclusion to a series of remarkable character arcs and it is absolutely worth the read.

Kiera is trapped in the Otherworld. Ronan longs to find her. The rest of the crew reels from the consequences of the unrest that ended the second book, and the Deyrnas are in shambles. Each character is tested against themselves and against insurmountable odds. They have everything to lose. Old alliances are tested, and new ones are forged.

This book has the emotional intensity of Kingdom of Ash. It was heartbreaking; it was beautiful, it was perfect. I cannot recommend this book or this series enough. These characters will stay with me forever, and this book cemented the Children of Lyr series as one of my favourite comfort series.

If you like pirates, adventure, angst and romance, please do yourself a favour and read this series.

This conclusion is clearly written with the author’s whole heart. You can feel the passion, the love, and the commitment to telling the RIGHT story in every word.

As an author, it can be easy to cave to the idea of what your books SHOULD be. But Lina Amarego has never been one to take the easy path; out of all the authors I’ve read, she’s the one who most consistently makes the boldest, bravest decisions in her books. This series truly shows the power of letting your characters make decisions: some good, some bad, some absolutely insane, some that left me screaming at 2 in the morning in fear and excitement and ANGST.

This is a brilliant, guy-wrenching whirlwind of a series finale. I cried. I laughed—a lot. I raged and grieved and had just the best time with the Branwens and Mathonwys.

If you’re looking for a truly character-driven series, this is the trilogy for you. I’m grateful I found it when I did. And it will always have a special place in my heart!

I remember finishing Sister of the Stars last year and wondering how I was ever going to wait for Mother of the Moon to come out, and then wondering how Mother of the Moon could top Sister of the Stars. It turns out that the waiting was all very much worth it! I loved Mother of the Moon so much! It was just the right balance between heartfelt and humorous, where the stakes were high but the ending seemed realistic and wrapped things up so well, especially for the conclusion to the series! Additionally, while I loved the prose in the first two books, Mother of the Moon was on another level with prose: I'm already thinking about when I next reread it so that I can annotate and highlight my favorite lines and sections of prose. I also loved the character development from everyone (especially Reagan, who's been one of my favorite characters from the very beginning) and the inclusion of Griffin's perspective in the chapters! This series has definitely become one of my favorites, and I can already tell that I'm going to continue thinking about it long after I put Mother of the Moon back on my bookshelf!

Ah, the third and final instalment of Keira and her crew's story brings the tale to a satisfying close. Tying in more vibrant mythology, introducing new characters, and reconciling events from the first two books, it's a dive into the minds of Keira, Ronan and Griffin, who I've grown so attached to that it was hard to say goodbye - but when the moment did come, it was perfectly-pitched. I was left with an aching, but whole and fulfilled, heart.

Where book 2 'Sister of the Stars' was darker than the first, Mother of the Moon is deeper, exploring the psychological and subconscious, particularly in the sub-plane setting of the Otherworld, which we've heard much about but for the first time get to see in all its glory. The descriptions are vivid and powerful, the characterisation shining as brightly as Arawn's ice mirror, and there are character cameos you DON'T WANT TO MISS! I cried at least three times.

Like the first two, there's heart-wrenching emotion, there's love and loss and laughter. There's Death in the form of Henry Cavill, cooking carrots for dinner. There's Griffin and Reagan trying to out-pout each other. There's therapist Rhett. We also have a new character whose dynamic with Saeth is one of the highlights of the book for me. Then, our Keira and Ronan, navigating this new world in a way that shows how much they've grown, baring all their flaws yet making us fall in love with them all the more, as they fall in love with each other again in the form of these new people they've become.
Lina outdid herself with this one; it's her best work yet. I can't wait to see what masterpiece she rustles up next.

I am so bloody annoyed by this book that I want to give it a single star but I am choosing not to solely for the fact that I had to read 3 books to get here.

If the second half of book 2 and maybe a little bit of book 3 was combined together to form a single book this wouldn’t have been half bad but there was absolutely no need for this long ass book to be the third when all the characters constantly whined and complained about how selfish they were.

I am actually genuinely so mad right now that I had to drink a glass of iced water to calm down because all this wasted potential is so heartbreaking.

Keira the main character is such a selfish, self deprecating, whiny idiot that I wanted to rage scream every time her chapter came on. The only good part about the book was that we got a Griffin pov but even then they made him whine and complain about how all the deaths were his fault blah blah blah blah. I loved Ronan through book 1&2 but i wanted to strangle him all of this book.

Everyone somehow turns out to be a god? Everyone has star power?? For a group of self deprecating fools they sure think too highly of themselves because the constant pep talk about how they are forged from steel and fire and water and stars only to blame themselves and cry for about 80% of the book. MY GOD.

I’m wrapping my review up here because my blood pressure is through the roof for all the time i wasted getting invested in this nonsense only so the author could turn around and laugh in my face for my idiocy.

A triumph of a finale, Mother of the Moon brings such resolution to a trilogy full of struggle, love, doubt, hope, and victories both small and large. As hard as it was to say goodbye to these characters, this book truly feels like it brings so many of their stories full circle.

I will miss them. But I am so satisfied with how we said goodbye. ♥️

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

One of my favorite parts of this series has been seeing the growth and of Lina Amarego's writing over the years, and this final installment of The Children of Lyr trilogy is such a perfect and fitting conclusion for this story and a true measure of her skillset. Fans of this series will not be disappointed, even though there were a few twists that made me audibly yelp in surprise. (You'll know when you read them.)

This is a chunky, ambitious book that gives off some Avengers vibes as Amarego weaves three separate plot lines and character perspectives all together, but the result is incredibly satisfying. While it took me a moment to get into the book (the first 100 pages focused a lot on the emotional toll the second book had on each character) it felt real and authentic to be living through those moments with the crew. That said, when the book took on more of the adventure plot, I was fully swept away. All this to say that even though the book does start out a little heavy, that ebbs and flows as the story finds its footing. Amarego does a really great job diving into the emotional turmoil each character faces, and while it can sometimes be a little overwhelming, it creates really strong character dynamics. For how thick this book is, it was also really well-paced and balanced. There was a lot happening but it was presented in such a dynamic way that kept me wanting to read more.

I think my only "gripe" with the story is Amarego is a big fan of titles, and while they are beautifully created and have moments of impact, it bordered a little on being too much for me, but with the style of the story, the repetition is understandable just not my personal favorite.

Without giving anything away, I truly loved each storyline that the character's had, and the last 75 pages of the book were just incredible. I fully enjoyed this gripping conclusion, and it actually makes me want to re-read book one again.

I cannot believe this saga has ended. I’m still processing all of my emotions and all of the events forms the book. It was EPIC. For me it was like Avengers assemble meets wish fulfillment meets a looooot of pain and heartache. There are so many things I want to exclaim, wildly gesture and GUSH about but they’re all heckin’ SPOILERS. I actually annotated some pages (virtually) and most of the annotations were crying faces and hearts 😭😂🥺❤️

I’d love to take the time to write a more eloquent and appreciative review. These books have been such a wonderful journey to be a part of and I cannot believe this is the LAST ONE. What will I do now?!

Keira, Ronan, the many crews and family, chosen and otherwise…they’ve truly snaked their way into my heart and left a mark. I cannot wait to go back and reread them all in one go. This is a series that WANTS to be reread. So many pieces and well laid plans fall into place and come together here!

This is a series that I am so proud to display on my bookshelves!

I received a digital ARC in exchange for my review but all opinions are ENTIRELY my own.

I can't wait to see the final product after edits have been made. This is an amazing and satisfying ending to the trilogy.

I'm sorry but I just need to point this out, why does Ronan think he's a dragon?

“Did you map it out?”
“Did we map it out,” Cassryn mocked with an eye roll, sweeping her wet hair back into a tight bun. “No, we just waved at it and swam away.”
The dragon within snarled, spiked tail raised and fire rushing up my throat, ready for me to spew it at Cassryn. She might have been made of stone, but even granite melted under enough heat, and I had plenty to spare. “Watch your tongue–”

Dragon my ass. You're a fucking fish. Every single 5 minutes he's like
"The dragon within me unleashes and I growl"

I would understand that sentence if he was a dragon, but he's not. I honestly don't even like him. I swear if he turns into a dragon at the end of the book.

75%
Of course, he turns into a dragon. He's a siren/dragon/god hybrid or some shit.
Yes! He is also a god! Why is everyone a god? I have no idea. The author had to make everyone so special.

90%
Guess who's now a god? Fucking Reagan. That little shit. God of the Underworld. Omd this book is getting on my last nerves.

Ugh this book was wayy to long than it needed to be and the whole time the characters were depresses and blaming themselves for everything. I just skimmed the whole thing.

*Papa once said a good sailor needed a home to come back to. I’d just never realized that home could be a person*
..
This final installation to the Children of Lye trilogy is truly about the people we call home and the lengths we'd go to protect the ones we love most. I had the pleasure of reading this entire series and am always blow away by Amarego's ease and comfort with poetic imagery. Her writing is tangible and delicious and I loved and breathed every scene, every kiss, every heartache, and every death (RIP).

This conclusion is a big bow on the trilogy, wrapping it up in the midst of chaos and ruin, feeling akin to folklore and ancient mythology with the presence of living gods. I was drawn in by the antagonist and found his allure to be both exciting and wicked.

Keira, Ronan, and Griffin have clear voices of their own and each of their chapters brought new life to the story, though Griffin chapters are without a doubt my favorite. Characters come into their own in this thrilling finale, reaching their full arcs in a way that will make you wonder how they were ever the same people from book one.

I'll miss this world and this crew and the beautiful home Amarego has created for us with this series. She'll always be an instant read for me. I hope you enjoy!

What an amazing end to a trilogy! This final novel in the series upped the stakes so much, throwing our favourite characters into dire conflict. I think the character whose journey I enjoyed the most was Keira's, and the events that unfolded for her kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole story. I adored the dive into her power, as well as throwing new wrenches into the works with her relationship with Ronan.

Overall, this was such a solid ending to a series, and it's clear that Amarego cares deeply about this world and these characters. I am thoroughly looking forward to reading more from this author!

I didn’t like this as much as I did book 2 but I’d recommend this series to anyone that loves pirates and everything that comes with them. The world building was intricate and the mythology, gorgeous. It has the perfect amount of romance and fantasy that I wasn’t bored and I truly regret choosing not to finish this series last year.

Also I’m almost 500% sure Kingdom of Ash would be angsty-er so um…

I have so much more to say about this book but I can’t articulate all my thoughts yet so I’ll definitely come back to fully review it.

I can’t believe this series is over! “Mother of the Moon” was such a fantastic read. The story picks up with Captain Ronan and the crew facing new challenges, and it’s packed with action, emotion, and some really beautiful writing. Keira’s journey in the Otherworld and the fight against Morwyn Locasta kept me hooked from start to finish.

Lina did an amazing job wrapping up the series. The characters felt so real, and the plot twists were just perfect. I’m absolutely heartbroken that it’s finished, but it was such a good read!

That was a great conclusion to the series. I thought that this book was immensely better than the previous. Didn't feel like an info dump despite being longer in pages. I love how this series had no damsels but bad ass female characters (main and side). But I think Griffin and Rhett took this one for me. Those final few chapters were everything ❤️
