Fandoms: Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Relationship: Scorpius Malfoy/Albus Severus Potter -------------------------------------------------- Albus Potter gets through life by avoiding his family, working a desk job at St. Mungo's, holding onto grudges, and trying to convince everyone that being the son of the most famous man in the world isn't all it's cracked up to be. Meanwhile, he's determined to be silently in love with his best friend until death.
But one day, he sees a pattern that no one else has-that no one wanted him to-and things change forever.
A story about stubbornness, forgiveness, finding the person who makes you the best version of yourself, and learning to let go.
“I have loved you since before I knew what love bloody was, before I knew I was gay, before I knew what it was to want another person, and I have loved you ever since, and I have never faltered! I never needed to be convinced to love you, I didn’t need you to beg me over the span of years, I just loved you because you deserved it. I didn’t need to be convinced to keep loving you, I didn’t need tricks or rings or anything, I just did it! I’ve never needed you to have a better job or a different name or to even love me back! I have loved you with no hope of reciprocation and I have lived with that and it is one of the best things about me and one of the most pathetic. I have loved you for all the reasons Rose never loved you the way you needed and you still chose her. You chose her and I will never not hate her for that.”
This fic was one of the best fics I’ve ever read ohmygod
This story was so incredible! I'm still not entirely sure I like Albus, but his story captivated me. There's no overly simplistic one-dimensional characters in this; they're all very layered and nuanced and flawed, in a very human way. The storyline itself was intriguing and kept me guessing (well, until about the halfway point where I couldn't contain it anymore and skimmed ahead for spoilers.) And the ending...my word. I'm not joking when I say I sobbed through the last 30% of this. I was just so engrossed in the story and emotionally drained by what was happening. A truly fantastic piece of fanfiction writing.
DNFed it after the initial few chapters. I cannot say how the work ends, but in the initial few chapters, Albus is quite angsty and has a very fractured relationship with his family, both with Harry and his siblings. I know initial Harry bashing and Rose bashing is quite typical in many Scorbus fics, but it has honestly become quite tiring to read. Perhaps, the fic might end on a more redemptive note, but personally, I couldn't read through all of Albus's gloominess to actually reach there. I might pick up the rest of the work later, but maybe I need a more angst - free work right now.
