This is the 4th installment (well, technically 5th if you count the novella) of a historical "Charlie's Angels" series, and it did not disappoint!
This story features Glory Cavendish, the only remaining maiden of the four young women that have dedicated themselves to helping others by learning from Lady Charlotte Fayne and her pair of "trainers" (featured in the novella mentioned above) to champion other women or those of few means via investigative skills and self-defense moves when necessary. Though Glory is the daughter of a Duke, she has been on the outside looking in with respect to the ton as her father is half Chinese. Thankfully, her eccentricities are not only tolerated by her close friend group, they are encouraged. But given that the other angels are otherwise occupied of late (one is injured; another pregnant), Glory is largely on her own to assist an older woman whose dog has been stolen, and despite the dangers that surface, she is determined to see her mission through.
Master Wei Chen left his homeland China in dogged pursuit of the American that murdered them, and he has had that singular purpose above all else. He has dedicated his time to helping people beat addiction to opioids (which is how he met the Duke of Hadleigh, the husband of a fellow Angel, and thus how he gained introduction to Glory). As part of his vow to remain focused on his goal, Wei has been celibate the last 13 years, yet each time he encounters Glory, feelings he has not had in all that time surface. When she insists on putting herself in danger, he feels compelled to stay in the shadows ready to leap to her defense or rescue. Soon he realizes that the investigation Glory refuses to abandon ties into his own personal mission.
What will happen when the danger increases for both of them? Can a commoner from another land ever hope to have a future with the daughter of a Duke? And is there even a future for them if Wei cannot let go of the past?
The plot was fast-moving and engaging - I was glued to the pages to find out what happened next and how it all tied together. The characters were unique for a regency romance, and that made it all the more interesting. I was grateful that when there were communication issues or other obstacles, the characters didn't dwell on them or draw out any unnecessary angst, but they instead faced it and worked through them. And, of course, the steamy goodness was delish!

Finally, Glory’s story!
Oh I loved this girl. She’d be my bestie for sure… sweet and emotionally vulnerable, but also beautifully unconventional, brave, smart, vibrant and full of good vibes. She was just so very genuine. It’s no wonder Wei fell so hard for her.
And she was so drawn to Wei, who I found to be a very intriguing character; the personification of still waters run deep. He was the perfect counterpoint to Glory. He was the quiet intensity to her bubbly enthusiasm, the disciplined toughness to her impulsiveness, the wisdom to her thirst for knowledge about love, sex, her Chinese ancestry, and I can’t not mention her fascination with lightness kung fu. I was so intrigued by the way the author wrote about this that I was on YouTube in no time, checking out videos. I can see why Glory watching Wei in action made her all tingly. (The fabulous muscles helped too, I’m sure 😉)
They were absolutely meant to be. And when Wei finally let go and went all in for Glory? They were smokin hot together and I was there for it. Their love, passion and connection felt authentic and oh, did Wei love fiercely.
I have to say, it was so good to find history in my historical romance. You’d think that would be a right common thing, but often, it’s not. I’m a huge history buff and I love it when I get a little learning in while being engaged with a historical romance. I really liked the insight into kung fu and never realized how much of the focus was on mental strength and discipline, even more so than the physical. I knew nothing about the opium wars, the British smuggling of opium and very little about Chinese culture. Kudos to the author for weaving real history into her romance, and enlightening me while at the same time entertaining me.

Master Wei Chen has led a life of discipline focused on the goal of avenging his murdered family. But distractions and temptation come in the form of Lady Gloriana Cavendish. Glory longs to lead a life different than the typical debutante, helping a secret society of lady investigators solve cases around London. As Wei and Glory are thrown together on a case, their slow-burn romance ignites into fiery passion.
This is the fourth book (plus a novella) in the Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels series. This story can be read alone, although Glory's friends and fellow investigators have their own books in the series and play a role in this story. Glory is also the daughter of another book couple in Callaway's catalogue.
There were a lot of things that I liked about this story, and one thing that probably stopped me from enjoying it more. First, the book begins with the hero as a young man, having an affair with an older, married woman. Perhaps it was my own reading mistake, but I thought the hero was 25 at this point (he later tells the heroine that he was 18 and the woman was 25). There is a time jump, and the story moves ahead 15 years later. I do not personally like large year age gaps, so believing the hero was 20 years older than the heroine instead of the actual 13 years was kinda of a strike for me. The heroine also felt a bit immature, which compounded my opinion. By the time I realized the age gap wasn't that large, it was already cemented in my mind. That's my own personal not-quite-dealbreaker and may not matter to other readers (just an explanation of why it was 3.5 stars for me...I ended up deciding to bump it to four).
But now the good stuff! I really love seeing other races, ethnicities, and cultures being brought into historical romance! I loved learning about Wei and his background, and - having just watched Peaky Blinders - the tie-in to the opium proliferation was very interesting to me. I love a good revenge plot, and I thought this one developed in an intriguing way. I also enjoy Callaway's style...her books are steamy and move with good pacing, always keeping the reader engaged in both the romance and the plot. This book felt particularly genuine, probably because she was able to incorporate her own culture into it.

They were an interesting pairing, with Wei being a supremely controlled and calm shifu (teacher) and Glory being more passionate and impulsive. But I liked their pairing and the influence they had on one another; Glory brought out the more emotional side of Wei—though he was already plenty emotional when it came to his family and the revenge he sought for their murders—and Wei brought out a more reflective side to Glory. I appreciated that Glory maintained her idealism and spirit though throughout her interactions with Wei and brought those things to bear on her outlook and his outlook too, as a result of their connection.
My criticism is that it didn’t feel like that much happened in the book and there was just something missing from their relationship; it was a bit too easy, despite the very real obstacle of their differences in station and position. Wei resisted her for all of 2 seconds, even though he’s supposed to be this super self-controlled man.

For you.”I really enjoyed the diverse representation in this book and which you see far too little of in historical romance. Wei is fully Chinese and Glory is a quarter Chinese, and very interested in her heritage and that part of her family history. I loved the insight we got into the Chinese culture and tradition through Wei and the curiosity that Glory expressed in her Chinese heritage.

This is my 21st book by Grace Callaway and I have been reading her since 2016. She doesn’t write a ton of books a year (which is sad) because she writes so damn good. She is on my favorites list.
I LOVED these characters Glory and Wei. This was a great and interesting story. I loved them and their story.
It took me until I read Book 3 to realize Society of Angels series is a cute spin on Charlie’s Angels. Even their boss, although she is a woman is named Charlie. Super cute.
I would definitely recommend this book.

Glory and the Master of Shadows. You have to believe me when I say that this book was deliciously good. So good in fact that I found my self slowly reading specific scenes in the book. Can you guess what scenes they are? What specific scenes you ask?
Well that’s between Glory, Wei and I. Giggle, giggle. The writer did a wonderful job with the creation of the characters. I also think that the creativity of the story shares the emotional aspect to how Glory and Wei moves between the dark webs of London’s back alleyways. The romance is a slow burn in the book, but you will find yourself intrigued with the story, from tracking down murders to finding dog knappers. Glory and her Angels team use their special sleuthing skills to hunt down some treacherous men. In the mean time Wei hunts down murderous men and ladies. During Wei’s vengeful hunting, he finds that he must protect Glory at ever turn that she makes. Glory’s character I thought was perfect for this story. She’s that bright star that Wei needs in his life.
Glory’s not an emotionally type of woman, but a strong independent woman who is very intelligent, as well as she thinks for herself. Wei, is a serious man who respects, honor family and the word of his closest friends. How these two find one another is so romantic. Glory and Wei’s attraction is heart melting, as well as seductively arousing. Their story will have you excited over some stolen and intimate moments. The characters are all like able. They bring their special witty moments to the story. Without a doubt Glory and Wei’s characters move the book along with moderate speed, but not to fast. The plot was very logical to the story, which is convincing for the reader. The action scenes are few, but believe able and offers the right amount of excitement to each scene.
My favorite character of course is Wei. As I said his persona is serious, respectful, strong, fearless, intelligent and romantic. No need to worry how soon the plot will be addressed in the book. It hits you at the beginning of the story. You are given enough details to the background story, which will have you understanding the will and determination of Wei.
Ok. Now. Did I tell you about the love scenes and the dirty talk that’s happens in the story? No you say?! Where the heck was my mind? Girrrrrrllll. My man Wei was a naughty, naughty boy. The scenes between Glory and him are so hot that “I” had to take breaks in between. These moments are more so when it comes to Wei or Glory palming a certain anatomy part. I love a man who can be kinky and yet very dirty when it comes to making love.
The writer did a perfect job at using the dialogue and giving details to specific scenes that played out during the love scenes. The writing is terrific and the story was beautiful. Well that’s between Glory, Wei and I. Giggle, giggle. The writer did a wonderful job with the creation of the characters. I also think that the creativity of the story shares the emotional aspect to how Glory and Wei moves between the dark webs of London’s back alleyways. The romance is a slow burn in the book, but you will find yourself intrigued with the story, from tracking down murders to finding dog knappers. Glory and her Angels team use their special sleuthing skills to hunt down some treacherous men. In the mean time Wei hunts down murderous men and ladies. During Wei’s vengeful hunting, he finds that he must protect Glory at ever turn that she makes. Glory’s character I thought was perfect for this story. She’s that bright star that Wei needs in his life.
Glory’s not an emotionally type of woman, but a strong independent woman who is very intelligent, as well as she thinks for herself. Wei, is a serious man who respects, honor family and the word of his closest friends. How these two find one another is so romantic. Glory and Wei’s attraction is heart melting, as well as seductively arousing. Their story will have you excited over some stolen and intimate moments. The characters are all like able. They bring their special witty moments to the story. Without a doubt Glory and Wei’s characters move the book along with moderate speed, but not to fast. The plot was very logical to the story, which is convincing for the reader. The action scenes are few, but believe able and offers the right amount of excitement to each scene.
My favorite character of course is Wei. As I said his persona is serious, respectful, strong, fearless, intelligent and romantic. No need to worry how soon the plot will be addressed in the book. It hits you at the beginning of the story. You are given enough details to the background story, which will have you understanding the will and determination of Wei.
Ok. Now. Did I tell you about the love scenes and the dirty talk that’s happens in the story? No you say?! Where the heck was my mind? Girrrrrrllll. My man Wei was a naughty, naughty boy. The scenes between Glory and him are so hot that “I” had to take breaks in between. These moments are more so when it comes to Wei or Glory palming a certain anatomy part. I love a man who can be kinky and yet very dirty when it comes to making love.
The writer did a perfect job at using the dialogue and giving details to specific scenes that played out during the love scenes. The writing is terrific and the story was beautiful. For when you're vibing with... a high heat historical romance, a Victorian romance that isn't! centered on white leads, a mentor/mentee romance, and a srs bsns man paired with a playful, plucky heroine.
As the vigilante daughter of a half-Chinese duke and a woman he had an affair with before they married, Glory has always felt a bit isolated by the ton. Now that all of her best friends are married and experiencing motherhood, she feels even more alone. Perhaps that's why she seeks out the tutelage of Wei Chen, a dangerous--but kind--man with a dark past. While Wei is willing to teach Glory how to fight, he's more hesitant to acquiesce to her desire for a very different kind of lesson... Despite how much he wants her. But the more Glory learns from and about Wei, the less they're able to resist their feelings...
Whew, this was good. While I do think that Pippa and the Prince of Secrets remains my favorite in this series (thus far--I am dying for Charlie's book) Glory and the Master of Shadows is an excellent counterpart, and is definitely my second favorite.

And I would say that they can be read as standalones, but why skip a fun Victorian Era take on Charlie's Angels where the heroines are girly girls who kick ass, support each other as friends, and get absolutely railed by growly dangerous men?
--Grace Callaway is of Chinese descent and mentioned in her notes that this is perhaps her most personal work. Here's what I really loved about it. You could see the influence not only of Grace's experiences as a bicultural woman and the very real history of the Opium Wars, but also Chinese art and cinema? Wei is inspired by the heroes of Cantonese dramas--tortured, graceful, elegant, DADDY--and there's this sense of wuxia throughout, or at least there was to me.
At the same time, a lot of attention is paid to the fact that Wei, a Chinese man who came to England as a young adult in the 1800s, has a very different experience from Glory, a woman who is not officially recognized as her father's child (like, he is her dad, he functions as her dad, but due to Reasons he basically had to adopt her, and a white man was known as her father by blood). While it's clear that rumor has circulated the fact that Glory is the daughter of a biracial man, it's still not official, and she's been raised as many debutantes in England would be. She's learning Chinese, but she's not fluent; she's curious about that part of her background, but she has to seek it through Wei, versus her father. And that's part of how they bond. A lot of Glory's individual journey is about finding her place, not only as a debutante of (partially) Chinese descent, but as a girl who just doesn't feel like she fits in. Yet never does she come off as NLOG--she's girly, she loves attention from Wei, she loves being feminine with her friends. She's a bit quirky, a bit out of place, a bit... perhaps, a late bloomer?
--And speaking of that--I love that this is the second historical romance I've read recently that exemplifies this sense of "all my friends are getting married without me". When you're on the last (or in this case, second to last, but Charlie is different) heroine in a series, it makes sense that she would feel a little delayed. And Glory has a super protective father, and wasn't super interested in sex or romance until her crush on Wei began... So yeah, it makes sense that she's a late bloomer. She doesn't seem quite as sexually aware as Livy and Fiona, the other virgin heroines in the series, are. Which... does add to the "teach me daddy" vibe she has with Wei. And I was not mad at that.
--However, I do want to make it clear that Wei and Glory's dynamic is very different from Livy and Hadleigh's (the most explicitly dom daddy/little girl romance in the series, though Hawk and Fi also had this vibe). While there's a similar age gap between Glory and Wei and Livy and Hadleigh and Hawk and Fi... Wei is very restrained. He doesn't launch himself at this girl. He also doesn't struggle with the same type of guilt Hadleigh did for wanting Livy; he does feel guilty, but it comes from a different perspective personally and culturally. Also--unlike Hadleigh and Hawk, Wei knew from day one that Glory was a vigilante. This was great to me. The one thing I didn't like when comparing Olivia and the Masked Duke and Fiona and the Enigmatic Earl is that there was a bit of repetition to the heroes not knowing until they knew. While I get why this is the way it is and I literally can't think of a way around it, I loved that in Pippa and the Prince of Secrets, Cull knew from the jump and just had to fucking deal. Wei is in a similar position, except I would say that of all the heroes in this series, he has the most confidence in his heroine's abilities. He's still protective, he still worries--but he knows Glory is a badass, and he loves that about her.
--So coming back to Wei... A fantastic hero. His backstory is achingly sad. He's been set up as very calm and above it all throughout the books, and of course, as we discover, he is NOT. He has a freakout in this book that is actually pretty fucking daring. I was surprised that she went there, and I liked that she did. Still waters run deep with Wei, and, it must be said, he's also SICK HOT. A cool, calm, and collected badass who chucks his heroine on the cheek and also does in fact do dirty shit to her feet away from where her parents are sleeping? We love this. We looooove this.
--If you like the "dating who daddy [father] hates" thing... Yeah, this does that really well. It's all very "BUT DADDY I LOVE HIM" and I was a-fucking-bout-it. I also read some interesting things into it, and I feel like some readers might have their expectations subverted.
--This one does kind of burn slow (by Grace Callaway standards!) and then speed up. I liked this. Some might feel like the ending is a bit too quick, but for me, it all came together very well.
The Sex Stuff:
I just love how like... sexual these books are. While being romantic. Like, there is a lot of focus on sex acts that are not p in v, which? Great. This is a debutante, she's a virgin, she can't get pregnant out of wedlock, it makes sense that p in v happens late in the book. But a lot of shit happens beforehand. There are some VERY VERY VERY good oral scenes in this one. Like. Some of the best oral scenes I've read. And yes, it is all very, very "teach me", if you.... happen to be into that.
I loved this one, and I can't wait for the next. If you've been hype for Wei and Glory, you won't be disappointed. If you're new to the series, I think you'll have a great time.

Oh my gosh, every book in this series seems to be better than the last (all of them have been astonishingly good with the exception of book 1). I adored Glory and Wei's romance, Wei's backstory was so incredibly sad and heartbreaking and I'm glad he found redemption and peace and love. The ending was quite the turn of events. I'm sad that Charlie's book isn't available via audio yet - the narration for this series has been really wonderful.

Glory and the Master of Shadows is an interesting mix of Charlie's Angels and old school wuxia films. It's important to suspend disbelief in order to truly immerse yourself into this diverting universe. What I enjoy the most about this series is that it provides the kind of zany escapism I need from time to time.
Wei is a Chinese healer and martial artist and his goal is to find the people responsible for his family's murder. Glory is a member of the Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels. Wei has assisted the Angels on a few missions in the past, and Glory is determined that he takes her on as a pupil.
I had a lot of fun reading this book. I really liked both Wei and Glory and their friends to lovers romance was both sweet and steamy. Wei's singular focus is on revenge, so he's the stoic and celibate type of hero who cannot afford to be distracted. And Glory is most definitely a tempting distraction for Wei. He tries to fight off his attraction, but Glory gets her way pretty quickly—as she should 😌
Additionally, I really enjoyed the wuxia vibes as Wei teaches Glory lightness kung fu. Plotwise, Glory's mission and Wei's revenge intersect and take center stage, so the kung fu training lessons kind of take a backseat. I was expecting some more detailed training sessions, maybe even a forest fight scene inspired by classic wuxia films (House of Flying Daggers—IYKYK), but I'm satisfied with what we got. I also really liked how the lessons Wei were taught ran parallel to his journey of revenge and love. It felt like a full circle by the time Wei's revenge was completed.
One of the things worth noting here is that the author integrates her preceding heroes and heroines into her current books in a seamless and authentic way. I really enjoyed Glory's scenes with her parents, especially the talk with her mother 🥺 The climax is interesting because there was a clash between two characters that I did not see coming. I truly enjoyed this conflict because it created room for both drama and relationship growth. My only concern is that this conflict was resolved too quickly and I really needed one last scene with Wei and Glory's parents in the aftermath.

What an intriguing, steamy, emotional book! Finally something quite rare in the genre, a Chinese hero who brings with him all his heritage and his culture. Wei is my kind of hero: outwardly stern, composed and cold, with a dark past, but swept away by his passion for the heroine. And Glory is such a wonderful heroine! Socially awkward, yes, but only because she is refreshingly genuine and doesn’t want to change for the sake of blending into Society. I loved the intrigue and the clever retelling of the Charlie’s Angels series, as well as the extended foray into Chinese culture and the history of opium trade. It’s always pleasant to learn about things I don’t know while enjoying a good romance!

Lady Gloriana Cavendish is far from the typical debutante, despite being the daughter of a duke. She’s optimistic and curious about everything, always eager to engage in the latest mission being undertaken by the secret society of female investigators to which she belongs. During one such endeavor she meets Wei Chen, a native of China and a master of both healing and fighting. She’s completely awed by him and convinces him to take her on as a student, though she quickly begins to wish for a more intimate connection with him.
Master Wei Chen has devoted his life to avenging the murders of his parents and younger sister, controlling himself with unwavering discipline. Having come to London following the trail of the man who took everything from him, Wei now runs a clinic in East London helping opium users overcome their addictions while he continues to hunt for the villain. When he meets Glory, Wei finds himself distracted for the first time since becoming a master. His longings are forbidden between a shifu and student, not to mention by the disparity in their social positions.
Wei and Glory’s connection slowly builds to something much more as they are drawn into a much more convoluted web than they ever could have imagined, leaving them to decide how hard they’re each willing to fight for their future together.
This story did a great job of combining an action-based plot with a poignant love story. Our heroine, Glory was curious about everything, a trait that usually comes with an annoying amount of naivete, but I didn’t find that to be the case here. Rather, she was likable and her loyalty to her friends and family made her someone I could root for. I also loved the fact that it was Glory pursuing Wei more so than the other way around. She was courageous enough to be vulnerable and that in turn gave Wei the permission he needed to be open with his feelings and true to himself. After so long on his own it was really sweet to see him finally have such a close relationship with someone else, someone who could be a true partner with him. I do wish things with Glory’s father had been handled slightly differently, but I was very pleased with how things worked out. I also really liked reading about a hero who was from a country we usually don’t see mentioned all that much in Victorian romance. These two were one of the couples whose story I have most enjoyed and I look forward to the next installment in the series.

Lady Glory Cavendish is one of Lady Charlotte's Society Of Angels. Unlike other debutantes, she grew up in a small village full of curiosity and adventure. Living in London hasn't stopped her spirit. She finds life in London exciting as she uses her brain and physical abilities with the other Angels to solve problems. Glory is acquainted with Master Wei Chen from his help with the Angels in the past. Learning martial arts with Chen as her "shifu" will be a benefit to protecting herself, but it's the man himself who holds her interest and then her heart. Wei has been looking for his family's murderer for fifteen years with no clue, until he meets Glory. The war against opium is the catalyst to murder. Wei must decide if Glory and her love are more important than revenge. Callaway hit the mark with a love story between a Chinese man with a dark past and the young lady fighting for his cause.....JUSTICE.

I’m a little disappointed in this book. I have read the entire series and thoroughly enjoyed each book. This book is only a little longer than the others but if felt way longer. Something about the pace and plot was dragging for me. I found myself skimming parts which I never do for Grace Callaway’s books.
I loved Glory. Glory is unsure of herself and has to find the strength and courage to go after what she wants and to not back down. Wei was fine but not my favorite hero she has written. I was in support for his revenge story and I felt so bad for him and his family. I liked the romance. I also liked the ending of how the revenge plot wrapped up. My biggest issue was the pace and parts of the story were moving too slow for me.
I’m super pumped for Charlotte’s story next. I was hoping and waiting for her to get her own book. Can’t wait until next year!

i found both wei and glory to be endearing individuals. glory had been admiring wei from afar ever since he was introduced in the other books. i loved that she’s inquisitive, thoughtful, and daring. she jumps first before she thinks. the total opposite is wei. he’s patient and level-headed. his only goal in life is to find the killer who murdered his entire family. entangled together in this web, glory and wei fall in love while achieving each other’s objectives. overall, i had so much fun! this entire series is one of my favorite historical romances so it’s no doubt that glory’s story is filled with adventure and romance as well. but i’m the most excited about charlie and her past which is coming up in the next book!

Glory and the Master of Shadows is another glorious book in Grace Callaways series of crime solving ladies known as the Society of Angels.
We have Wei, a shifu and healer that’s out for revenge and Glory, the daughter of a Duke who spends her time solving crimes with her friends. When the two of them are sent out on a mission together they end up almost getting caught and using the tried and true method of “let’s hide in this inconspicuous place where we can listen in while being close together and you can get an inconvenient boner”.
I continue to love reading about these Angels solving crimes and finding their HEAs. GatMoS mixes classic wixua films with the classic Callaway romance that left me happy and smiley.

GC has a way of never making you feel like you’re missing something when jumping into her series but also making her characters rich enough that you need to read their books as well. Kinda sad I’ve caught up on her backlist. But I’ve got Charlies to look forward to next. But also…. Maybe Mrs. Swann???? With Scott??
We have Wei, a shifu and healer that’s out for revenge and Glory, the daughter of a Duke who spends her time solving crimes with her friends. When the two of them are sent out on a mission together they end up almost getting caught and using the tried and true method of “let’s hide in this inconspicuous place where we can listen in while being close together and you can get an inconvenient boner”.
I continue to love reading about these Angels solving crimes and finding their HEAs. GatMoS mixes classic wixua films with the classic Callaway romance that left me happy and smiley.

This is the fourth book in the series … very similar to the others tho the MCs of course are different. Glory is the daughter of a duke ( he’s the hero in Enter the Duke, the second book in Callaway’s the Game of Dukes series), and the hero Wei is Chinese and has a center in London where he treats opium addicts. Another mystery in this book for the Angels to solve … finding a lady’s dog that was kidnapped. Add in Wei’s quest for revenge .. to find the man who killed his family years ago in China which the Angels help solve.
There was a fair amount of martial arts and Chinese customs in the story … probably the most interesting parts. Lots of sex scenes like the other books … explicit tho not very swoon worthy. All in all, an ok read that did not hold my attention at times as there was a lot of repetition of the MCs thoughts. Wei kept agonizing that he wasn’t good enough for Glory. She was worried that her parents wouldn’t accept him. Of course they did get their HEA.
Like the previous books in this series, the dialogue and story felt a tad modern and unbelievable. The premise of Charlie’s Angels in 19th century London did make for an entertaining read tho it isn’t my cup of tea.

Ohhh I really liked this one. Wei Chen is a opium healer and master of martial arts (who has also appeared in the previous books) and Glory (daughter of a Duke and part of the Society of Angels) wants Wei to teach her kung fu. Wei becomes Glory's Shifu. This was a fun read and had different tropes as this kept things entertaining. They come together solving a mystery and things moved at a fast pace. The history was well thought out throughout as well. I can't wait to see what Grace brings on next.

I honestly don't have a lot to say about this one. I really liked Glory and Wei, although "hero thinks he can't be with her because he's on a revenge quest" tends to not be a favorite of mine, however justified said revenge quest is. Still, I probably would've rounded up to four stars if not for the drama at the end, which was just too much for me. Verrrry interested in the ending, which strongly implies that Charlie's book is up next. Hoping my prediction on Charlie's past is correct.

Chinese Bridgerton fr!! I’ve been on a hunt for good Asian romances/smut and this was so good and more people should stan this author and book. I will note the heroine Glory is only 25% Asian and it is primarily set in England, but the elements of kung fu and history of the opium war made this super interesting. Spice level is also high. I also enjoyed the incorporation of the Chinese concept of 缘分 (yuan fen) which I’m trying to understand more. Also cover is a 10/10 🤭

Although this hasn't been my favorite GC series, I did manage to find some little moments along the way. It didn't occur to me until halfway through the first book that this was a play on Charlie's Angels. I know they're all young ladies who want to fight crime, but they're all little ninnies who think they know better than hardened criminals. Each book had their destined love saving them on multiple occasions during times of crisis. It defeated the purpose of them being independent strong women. I digress because I don't have to read another book in this series and I don't care about Charlie.
Glory and the Master of Shadows is the story between the eponymous Glory and Chinese master, Wei. He gave off major Li Shang vibes from Mulan that I was totally here for. He was unlike any MMC I had read before. He was so calm and collected, yet there were no concern regarding the fires that burned underneath. I thought Glory was a bit dunderheaded at times, but she was thirsting after Wei nonstop. I can't blame her. The only part I didn't like was they way she didn't stand up for herself or defend Wei's love, but she's 21. What does she really know? I'm looking forward to starting the next GC series as I unfortunately grow closer to the end of her catalog. I'm trying to take my time but they're just too good!

Glory and the Master of Shadows is the 4th book in Grace Callaway’s ‘Lady Charlotte’s Society of Angels’ series and follows the last of the ‘Angels’ Lady Gloriana Cavendish. It can be read as a stand-alone story, but it is linked to Grace’s previous series Game of Dukes which was fabulous – this series being the stories of the second generation, so you do get an added appreciation if you have read those. Glory is the daughter of Ransom and Maggie from Enter the Duke.
With her fellow ‘Angels’ out of action for a few days Lady Glory decides to tackle their latest case on her own. She crosses paths with the mysterious and handsome Wei Chen who runs a healing and fighting arts centre. Intrigued by the enigmatic and disciplined shifu, Glory convinces him to take her on as his pupil all the while hoping that the relationship will lead to more. Master Wei Chen has dedicated his life to finding the villain that murdered his family and avenging their deaths. For the first time in years he finds himself distracted from his path by the lively and delightful Lady Glory – finding himself going out of his way to ensure her safety.
But can Wei give up his revenge for a life with Glory and will her father the Duke allow a marriage between his daughter and a commoner?
I loved the vibes coming from Glory and Wei’s story. The mix of cultures and social spheres makes it a refreshing and different story. Glory is young and spirited but also is very grounded. Her mix of innocence with wisdom is very appealing. She balances her love for Wei with her love for her family and doesn’t lose sight of both. I loved that she engineered a solution to suit all and essentially she helped Wei achieve his mission in the end.
Wei is a very different hero than the norm and his backstory was so tragic. We understand why he chose the life of discipline he did and it was wonderful to see him slowly unbend and give himself a measure of forgiveness as he gradually realised his feelings for Glory.
Both Wei and Glory are really balanced characters who are a perfect match together. Their romance is both sweet and sensual and developed naturally.
I was absolutely blown away by this book. Grace has created a delightful world filled with love, friendship and family, humour, passion, depth, emotion and a genuine connection between the leads. It was wonderful to revisit the ‘Angels’ and their husbands and see how Rhys and Maggie are faring so many years on.
I always wait impatiently for Grace’s next book. Her stories are always a delight and are pretty much always on my re-read list. I received an advanced reader copy and would definitely recommend this story and the rest of the series to all.

An extremely ham-handed attempt
- the hero talking only in philosophical quotes
- a heroine who risks her life time and time again for someone else's pet dog(!)
- a heroine who can disguise herself as a buxom barmaid, but doesn't know ANYTHING about the mechanics of sex
- the heroine's aunt reeks of casual racism and browbeats the hero into "showing them Kung Fu"
- the heroine going to Kung Fu lessons with a 'specially designed' deep neckline dress
- the hero (and his sidekick) born and bred in China sprouting phrases like "Blimey!" and "Always a pretty minx, she was especially toothsome today"
It was just so hard to take anything seriously. What a book it could have been, and what a mockery !

I've been impatiently waiting for this to come out after first reviewing Fiona and the Enigmatic Earl last year and first being introduced to Glory and Wei. After spending the majority of the month of March catching up on Callaway's backlist in order to be fully educated on their backstories, I couldn't wait to dive into this! My sincerest thanks to Grace and her team for providing me with an ARC for review.
I want to start off by saying how different of a vibe this book has from her previous books. While it is written in the descriptive, quick-moving style that I have come to recognize and love from Callaway, it's evident that there is a sense of personalization to it, extending from the author's own half-Chinese background.
Our hero Wei Chen is hellbent on avenging his family we learn very early on, his history an immediately stark contrast to the coolly controlled character we've been introduced to previously. I'll admit that in learning about the devastation in his past, my heart instantly sank. Callaway has written some dark pasts in her heroes but this one was particularly brutal. I don't want to spoil anything, but while this darkness was depressing, and what's more is there is a sense of realism to it when you learn anything about how terrible the Opium Wars were.
Glory Cavendish was just as bright and spunky as she'd been before, and it's always refreshing to see a female character embrace her attraction, and in this case, even seek out counsel from her friends. In fact, their antics in trying to make Glory more appealing to Wei was rather hilarious. Glory is stubborn, but that is part of her charm, and that is what keeps Wei coming to her aid. She's self-aware in a way that doesn't necessarily make her self-deprecating (or an NLOG), she's just who she is and doesn't mind that she's different. Her biggest concern is that she doesn't have enough sway as a debutante in order to help her father.
Their romance is pretty instant and they don't waste time admitting their feelings for each other, which I enjoy when I'm not in the mood for a lot of angst between love interests. That said, there's plenty of mystery to be solved. I'm always impressed with how Callaway manages to weave together the outside conflict in a interesting way without it being cliché. In this case, I felt like I was following the same clues as Glory and Wei without being too ahead of their guesses. Wei experienced a lot more character development than Glory did what with his tragic backstory, but that doesn't mean Glory didn't learn to be confident in self (not just her actions).
As always the steam and the spice was on point, with this novel feeling a bit steamier than it was spicy, but lacking in neither. I will say, the conflict coming together was hysterically chaotic in a way I haven't seen before and while I know it was supposed to be serious, I couldn't help laughing the whole way through. Nothing like a couple men duking it out for the heroine (pun intended).
And now I have to wait to find out who Lady Charlotte Fayne falls for! (It's it Devlin? I say it's Devlin)

I confess I usually discover new-to-me authors via a free or discounted edition or an arc, but I do not know about the setting of her books’ promotions but like any Avon’s sale, they never work for me as a non North America resident.
So even if this arc is probably close to the end of the series, I could not let it pass.
I am a sucker for class differences romances, and here Glory and Wei could not have been more opposite. Even if I am not sure how she could be a lady as until quite late in the century there was no real law about adoption.
Still, even as the “step-daughter” of a Duke, she was well above a mere fighter / healer, even more a foreigner.
But what I liked the most was the foray into a different culture, and while revenge is revenge and tends to come with a price or at someone’s cost, it was intriguing to learn about a different culture.
Glory and Wei pairing is one of complementarity, she is impulsive, he is patient, she runs into things when he thinks things over, she is restless, he is quiet.
After for all his talk of celibacy, unworthiness and difference of age, he did not resist much the siren tempting him when he was able to stay celibate for close to a decade and a half.
I just felt like something was missing at time, is it because I have not read the other books, but I did not grasp when did their feelings moved from occasional teammates to in love partners. I felt like it was in part more lust than real love or very sudden. Even if I understand Glory feels a sort of kinship with Wei due to their common origins.

Glory and Wei pairing is one of complementarity, she is impulsive, he is patient, she runs into things when he thinks things over, she is restless, he is quiet.
After for all his talk of celibacy, unworthiness and difference of age, he did not resist much the siren tempting him when he was able to stay celibate for close to a decade and a half.
I just felt like something was missing at time, is it because I have not read the other books, but I did not grasp when did their feelings moved from occasional teammates to in love partners. I felt like it was in part more lust than real love or very sudden. Even if I understand Glory feels a sort of kinship with Wei due to their common origins.

Wei Chen Fights For His Future With Glory & What A Ride!
Grace Callaway gives us a terrific age-gap romance in book 4 of her Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels series and Glory & The Master of Shadows is a wonderful action packed adventure. A sexy romance and somewhat of a slow burn by Callaway's standards, Lady Glory Cavendish proves to be an intrepid and independent lady and she completely captures the heart of the austere Chinese Kung Fu master, Wei Chen, a dozen years her senior who happens to be in London seeking the murderers of his family.
I highly recommend reading this series in order. Although this can stand alone, you'd miss the three years Mr Chen has been a stalwart supporter of the ladies' investigative work -- especially since he is a good friend of the hero from book one, The Duke of Hadleigh. First time readers to the series might think that Chen's interest in glory comes out of the blue, when it definitely does not.
Can we TALK about how wonderful it is to have an Asian hero? Kudos to Ms. Callaway for creating such an honorable, sexy man. She said she patterned Wei after the Cantonese dramas she grew up watching and I think Wei is marvelous. (And smart enough to not let Glory go). I enjoy an age Gap romances when the author doesn't make a big deal about the difference in their ages or make the characters maunder about it. Chen admires Glory's bright personality and thirst for life but doesn't worry over her relative youth.
Glory. What a great heroine. I encourage you to read Enter The Duke for the full backstory on her parents. Glory feels like she doesn't quite fit in. To avoid scandal the duke, her half-Chinese biological father, never acknowledged her as his real daughter. Instead, he adopted her when he married her mother when Glory was 9 yrs old. But Glory bears a strong resemblance to her father and I'd have thought maybe things might have been ok the other way. Approaching her 21st birthday, she feels like an outsider in more ways than one since her fellow investigators are all married and starting families. I empathize with Glory.
Because of Glory's curiosity about her Chinese heritage, she's initially somewhat in awe of Wei Chen's ability but she quickly realizes how her physical reactions to him indicate she is attracted to him. Soon she is helping find the Englishmen responsible for his family's murder when their seemingly simple dog knapping case turns more complicated. Wei accepts her help. And he gives in to her request to teach her kung fu.
This book is plenty sexy despite that late full love scene. (Wei Chen is master of a lot more than kung fu let's just say. And Glory is an eager pupil.)
Told in 3rd person with POV pretty evenly split between Wei & Glory, this is a great romance with a great HEA. 5 HUGE stars.

Grace Callaway’s latest novel in her series Lady Charlotte’s Society of Angel is a perfect addition. What I have enjoyed about the series so far is that all the heroines are different and yet they all have their appeal. I really like the relationship between the protagonists. Wei represents for Glory a connection to her heritage and therefore her past. Through his involvement with Glory, Wei is able to confront his past which has held him back and can now move forward into his future. For both of them the relationship is a kind of awakening. To me the relationship felt real, it did not feel forced. “And that is how I know I love you Wei. Because I see you for who you truly are, and you still take my breath away “. (Glory to Wei)
They opened up to other and yet did not turn away from what they saw. Two people from different backgrounds who are drawn to each other and fall in love. I could empathise with the fact that Glory thought of how her family would be affected by the relationship . She was not ashamed of Wei, instead she was concerned of how it would affect how her family would be able to help those who had fallen into misfortune. Fortunately this was resolved quite satisfactorily. “Their passion deserved more than shadows: a thing of such beauty deserved to flourish in sunlight”.
This novel can be read as a standalone but both the heroine and hero are seen in prior books in the series. As with most of Ms. Callaway’s books there is a mystery. The mystery is interesting but it does not overshadow the romance. It instead aids in facilitating the romance between Glory and Wei. The reader will feel satisfied with how the mystery is wrapped up.
As usual one can count on Ms. Callaway to bring the heat 🥵 . This book was the right kind of steamy without being overdone.
The friendship between the Charlie’s Angels 😉 must be commented on. So many romance novels have women plotting against each other. These women are all strong in their own way and complement each other . The series highlights the deep bond among a group of women and it gives me such joy. I have to mention her that I love the fact that Ms. Callaway provides representation as it concerns women's bodies and I am here for it. We can be sexy and appealing with a variety of body types. I recommend this novel. Ms. Callaway is great at writing romance. I received an ARC for an honest review of this novel.
