What an emotional roller-coaster of a book. I'm a similar age as Chris was when she had the accident and my life is very much wedded to 'do-ing' like hers was. I too am back at Uni, love my embroidery - there were so many parallels it was easy to appreciate some of the enormous hurdles she faced minute by minute. The lack of agency she was afforded and the paucity of information provided appalled me. May her courage inspire better care for all those others who, through no fault of their own, have their lives changed beyond recognition. I will share my copy with a good friend who through medical negligence ended up with partial paralysis, constant pain and an ongoing battle for justice, involving a million specialists setting out to prove her a liar. There are some things that definitely haven't improved in the last 25 years :(
The book is a little repetitive - but understandably so. I'd love to know how things are for her now. I really felt an enormous connection due to her brutal honesty.
