WOW! What a great, gripping book! I read this book a couple years ago and it popped up on my recommendations shelf and I decided to write a review for it. The book is about a girl named Dovey Coe who is accused of murder. I will say that the opening lines of the book are the most gripping I have ever heard in my life-

My name is Dovey coe, and I reckon it don't matter if you like me or not. I'm here to lay the record straight, to let you know them folks saying I done a terrible thing are liars. I aim to prove it, too. I hated Parnell Caraway as much as the next person, but I didn't kill him.

Wow. I was gripped from the very beginning and you should totally try this book. I would recommend it for all ages.

"My name is Dovey Coe, and I reckon it don't matter if you like me or not. I'm here to lay the record straight to let you know them folks saying I done a terrible thing are liars. I aim to prove it too. I hated Parnell Caraway as much as the next person, but I didn't kill him."

The youngest of the three Coe children, twelve-year-old Dovey would just as soon carry around a pocketknife than a pocketbook. She wasn’t a skilled tracker like her brother Amos and she certainly wasn’t pretty and charming like her sister Caroline, but Dovey was loyal and honest and had a mind of her own. You never had to guess what Dovey Coe was thinking because she would tell you exactly what was on her mind…whether you cared to hear it or not. As you can imagine, this resulted in a few awkward situations and quite a number of bruised egos. Such was the case with Parnell Caraway. Son to the richest family in town, Parnell always got whatever he set his eyes on and at the present moment, his eyes were set on Caroline Coe. No other girl in Indian Creek, NC deserved his arm more, but Caroline was set on going to college in Boone. Dovey was certainly not going to let the likes of Parnell Caraway tear her family apart, but would she resort to murder to keep her family together?

I am an absolute and unashamed pushover for plucky and feisty heroines: Anne Shirley ("Anne of Green Gables"), Francie Nolan ("A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"), Matilda Wormwood ("Matilda"), and Fern Arable ("Charlotte’s Web") to name a few. Dovey Coe handily earns a spot among these lovable, irrepressible, undaunted, and spirited young ladies. Whether she’s confronting a school bully or the son of the man who owns half the town, Dovey is righteous in her convictions and uncowering in the face of injustice, unfairness, or just plain meanness. No matter how few nickels she had to rub together, Dovey never considered herself or her family poor. Her life was simple and satisfying and when something got her down, it wasn’t anything that a slice of her MeMaw’s chocolate cake or hammering a few nails into a two by four wouldn’t make right again. Failure was not only not an option for Dovey, it simply wasn’t in her vocabulary.

"Dovey Coe" was shelved under the Young Adult section in my local library; however, the book is listed for ages nine to twelve and I highly recommend younger readers seizing the opportunity to meet Dovey and her entire family. Older readers may feel the writing style is a bit simplistic, but the lessons Frances O’Roark Dowell lays out for her readers are ageless. Loving who you are, standing up for what is right, defending the weakest among you, and finding joy in life’s smallest pleasures are things we should all aspire to do. I think Dovey summed it up best when she said, “The way I seen things, us Coes had everything we needed in this world. Some might see us as poor, but that was their problem.”

What drew me to this book was the first paragraph. I was in a college young adult literature class and had a book review/project due on a recently published book. As I was flipping through the titles and books at the book store, I just happened to pick Dovey Coe up and read that first paragraph. It ended up being a great purchase!
Dovey Coe is a poor, young Southern girl who is accused of killing a wealthy, yet sneaky and conniving, boy named Parnell Caraway. This story takes place in the early 1900s in a small mountain town. All events leading up to the death of Parnell reveal the hatred that Dovey had for him - the way he treated her deaf little brother, how he was pursuing her older sister, and the general arrogance and oblivion that the townspeople have when it comes to Parnell.
The first part of the story leads up to the death of Parnell while the last part of the story involves the trial of Dovey. Frances O'Roark Dowell crafts a true trial complete with evidence and turns of events that the reader does not anticipate.
This is a book that I have recommended numerous times to both reluctant readers and readers just looking for a good book. Definitely one of my favorite young adult books read in my adult years.

Dovey Coe was a mystery and historical fiction and I loved it! Dovey starts off telling us about her family and what it is like being a
Coe. Dovey may have been a little girl but she had the strength and mind of a twelve year old boy. When the mystery beggins you do not want to put the book down. Dovey makes you want to read more and more. When you find out who actually kills Parnell you are very surpised! The author did a great job and keeping this book suspensful and that is why i gave it three stars!!!

This is one of my favourite books. I read it as a child and was fascinated this book starting my love for mysteries. It is very simple and laid out but also adds it many estrange and complex elements if you look beneath the surface. It really puts you in the mindset of the main character and in my opinion you get quite emotionally attached to the characters.

Parnell Caraway, son of the richest man in Indian Creek, NC is the biggest bully in town. Having grown up reaping the benefits of his father's wealth (his father owning the general store as well as most of the residential property in town), Parnell breezes through life on his sense of entitlement. The one major burr in his side is the Coe family, one of the few families in town who own their home & surrounding property outright. Parnell has a romantic interest in the Coe's eldest daughter, Caroline so he reluctantly plays nice with the rest of the family, at least outwardly. Caroline's younger sister, Dovey (the story's protagonist) doesn't buy the act. She's been on the receiving end of Parnell's taunts when no one else was around, and she's seen how mean he is to her brother's dogs, not to mention never giving her brother any respect or even acknowledging his presence most days. Dovey, though not a fan of Parnell, tries not to pay too much attention to him, focusing her attention on her deaf / mute older brother Amos. Amos, because of his disability, gets mistaken for slow in the head a lot, thus getting a strong dose of taunts and bullying. Dovey, tomboy through and through, gets in a lot of faces keeping the bastards off her brother. As for Amos, he's actually able to read and write pretty well, his favorite author being Mark Twain. He struck me as the "gentle giant" type.

Caroline Coe has plans to get out of town, attend teacher's college and try to see at least some of the world outside of Indian Creek. Parnell doesn't put much stock in Caroline's dreams, much like the way she doesn't pay much attention to his flirtations. At least not at first. When Parnell gets word that Caroline has her college tuition paid and will be leaving town for sure, he amps up his attentions and for some reason, she allows and even somewhat encourages him -- maybe because she figures she's on her way out of town, no time for anything serious.

Well, when Parnell doesn't take the hint and tries to propose to Caroline (in front of the entire town, btw) the day before she's set to leave. Much to his shock and awe she turns him down! It's then that the reader sees that Parnell is not only a spoiled brat / bully of a man, he's also a mean-hearted sore loser. To get back at Caroline, Parnell puts together this ruse where he steals one of Amos' dogs and then tells Dovey to come get it because it tried to attack him. Dovey feels like something is fishy with this story but meets up with him anyway. She finds that he indeed does have one of Amos' dogs, tied up in the back of the Caraway's general store. This meeting quickly turns pretty sinister, there's a scuffle when Dovey realizes what Parnell brought her there for, she blacks out in the confusion, wakes up to find Parnell dead on the floor next to her. She's pretty sure it wasn't her that killed him but Mrs. Caraway comes to the store looking for her son and finds Dovey there next to the body so in a matter of days, little pre-teen Dovey finds herself the center of a murder trial. Will the truth come out in time?

I loved Dowell's writing style. Though the story is written in Dovey's voice, a light mountain dialect, it's not at all hard to follow. I never expected Parnell to get as dark and mean-spirited as he did but having that element did move the story along nicely. My one issue with this story is I wished it was longer! The characters sometimes felt as if they could have benefited from a little more development, and the trial portion felt a little rushed to me. Otherwise, a very fun story with the adorable Dovey, who is very much reminiscent of Scout from Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird.

I read this book at some point during 6th grade. I graduated high school this year and just finished my first semester of college, so it's been about almost seven years which is crazy. If anything, that just shows how much this book has stuck with me. Despite that I've only read it once in my life (I definitely plan on re-reading at some point) I remember this book vividly.

I picked it out of the huge mini library my English teacher, Ms. Lamb, (who was 1 out of the only 2 English teachers in my WHOLE primary education, the other being my junior year AP Lang teacher, who not only actually TAUGHT ME, unlike every other English teacher out there, but also had an immense impact on me and the way I look at literature. Sorry, but I'm still kind of salty about it) had in her classroom. I chose it out for independent reading and I just loved the book so much. It was one of the few non-fantasy books during that time that I read since I was completely obsessed with Percy Jackson (actually...still kind of am), and like I said, it really stuck with me.

I just loved the setting, Dovey Coe's wonderful personal, the mystery and trial, and basically every aspect of the book. I especially loved the young lawyer who ended up taking Dovey's case. I can't remember his name for the life of me, and even after skimming through reviews I couldn't find it sadly. But yes, 12 year old me definitely had a crush on him.

The novel also just had a good message overall about love, family, and being who you are, from what I can remember. It's simply a wonderful, wholesome book.

Dovey Coe by Frances O'Roark Dowell is set in the late 1920’s in Indian Creek, North Carolina. Dovey is a spunky 12 year-old who is proud of her family’s hard work ethic and character. Dovey is also on trial for murder. The opening paragraph of the book hooks the reader and draws you right in, “I hated Parnell Caraway as much as the next person, but I didn’t kill him.” The book then takes the readers through the events that lead up to Dovey finding herself on the floor next to the dead Parnell with no memory of what happened. After the opening paragraph I expected the rest of the book to be just at page turning. The first half of the book takes the time to give the background of Dovey and her family, perhaps a little too much time. But when the story does get to the trial and outcome it is quite suspenseful. The text is written in regional dialect and adds to the characterization of Dovey, her family, and friends, and it allows the reader to feel they are a part of the small community. The author seamlessly adds details about the way of life in the 1920’s in a rural community including everything from daily meals at home to the town general store. It would give middle school readers a glimpse of what life would be like during that time, something that I think is always interesting to compare to life today. Once you are accustom to the dialect of the text, this is an intriguing and suspenseful story about the value of family, love, and friendship.

Review for Dovey Coe
My favorite thing about this book was the way author Frances O’Roark Dowell developed the main character and voice of the story, Dovey. The way she talked and thought conveyed what kind of person she was: fierce, feisty, and brave. The story was a quick and easy read, but fun and interesting. The author also did a good job of “painting a picture” of the southern setting, which gave me, as a reader, a clear visual of what it looked like for the characters. One thing that felt odd to me was that the most eventful storyline in the book-Dovey’s trial after being accused of killing Parnell Caraway-did not really start until about two thirds of the way through the book. The beginning part was all about Parnell spending the whole Summer coming to Dovey’s house, trying to persuade her sister, Caroline, to marry him, even though he was an awful person and very cruel to Dovey and her brother, Amos. I enjoyed this part of the story, but the plotline seemed to shift somewhat abruptly after Parnell was killed and Dovey accused. I did not find this way of shifting plots bad or difficult to follow, but it was not typical or traditional writing. I really liked the book overall and would recommend it.

I'm beginning to like Frances O'Roark Dowell more and more and more. Loved Shooting the Moon and The Kind of Friends We Used to Be, and now I've finally met Dovey Coe. Wish I'd done it earlier.

Smart, tough, quick-tempered, sassy, and fiercely loyal, Dovey is a girl with moxie. Dowell has captured her voice so clearly, from the mountain dialect to the spunky attitude. Although some townspeople are prejudiced against the Coes simply because they're mountain folk, the integrity of the family shines in their interaction with each other. This is a good, hard-working, honest family, though some will never realize that because of their prejudices.

Some will wonder about Dovey's account of the events surrounding Parnell's death--is she really innocent? She did hate Parnell, after all. Others will firmly believe Dovey is telling the truth--she's just that kind of girl, honest and tough. But if she didn't kill Parnell Caraway, then who did? Although I "solved" the mystery early on, I think it's just about right for students. Enough clues there to figure out who and why, if they're really looking, but still enough of a mystery to keep them reading.

Dovey Coe and her family are poor by the standards set by others. By Dovey's standard, they are rich in the love of the land, in the love of family and in the love of simple things like climbing a mountain to find fox glove and the wild life of the woods.

Dovey is plain looking by the standards set by others. By her standards, it is what's inside that counts.

Dovey's sister Caroline is beautiful by all standards. When the son of the richest man in town sets his hooks on Caroline, he is unpleasantly surprised that she is not enamored with his bravado, good looks and money.

Dovey's brother was born deaf. By the standards of the town, he is stupid and an object of ridicule. By Dovey's family's standards, he is a rich jewel of love.

When Parnell Caraway learns he cannot obtain what he wants, he attempts to harm Dovey's family. Through the crystal clear eyes of a child, the story unfolds like dominoes wherein one is touched and the rest fall in motion.

I liked spunky, spirited Dovey Coe. She very much reminded me of Scout Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird.

Highly recommended! Winner of the Edgar Allan Poe Award.

With a unique mixture of colloquialism and southern refinement, outspoken Dovey, wrongfully accused of murder, sweeps readers along on her journey of self-discovery. Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Dovey Coe is that it does not present a black and white picture of right and wrong. When the villain of the story is murdered, Dovey concludes that he did not deserve his fate, though she protects the unpunished guilty party. Despite Dovey's young age, her tale presents a complicated glimpse at the enigmatic nature of life. Just as Dovey matures, the novel provides its audience with a chance to think and grow as well. Although aided by Dovey's everyman persona and the accurate details of the setting, the book still presents some weaknesses: cliché characters and an ambiguous handling of the Prohibition Era. Like its namesake, though, Dovey Coe is not perfect; perhaps that is why readers will enjoy it.

"Dovey Coe" by Frances O'Roark Dowell, winner of the 2001 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Juvenile mystery book, is a timeless story about growing up and one that is surely destined to become a classic.

It's easy to see why this book won The Edgar; the story moves along at a steady pace and the characters are well developed. The author doesn't come out and say which characters are respectable and which may have twisted morals. Instead, each character's personality comes through with the way the author describes them and has them respond to situations. There is the perfect amount of mystery for readers ages 9 and up, but not so little that older readers will get bored.

Dovey Coe by Frances O'Roark Dowell was one of the best young adult novels I have read in awhile. Dovey's character is priceless - she is a feisty young spitfire who speaks her mind no matter what. She lives in the mountains of North Carolina with her family, which includes a mother, father, a sister who is about to go to college, and a brother who is deaf. Dovey makes it no secret that she does not like the stuck up rich boy named Parnell Caraway who is courting her older sister, but when she is accused of Parnell's murder, Dovey has to use her common sense and wit to "fetch herself out of that trouble." Dovey is a character to remember - one cannot put this book down without falling in love with little Dovey Coe.

For November's Book Club - I loved the opening of this book - a great example of voice. I'm not convinced that the rest of the book lived up to that opening, but I'm still impressed for a first novel. I was actually intrigued quite a lot by the older sister character - can't think of the last time I saw someone explore the idea of using one's beauty quite so blatantly in a book for middle readers. I liked this enough to look up several more of Frances O'Roark Dowell's books, so I guess that says something.

Deaf reader reviewing books with deaf characters. This book is listed on my ranked list of books with deaf characters.

The deaf character is 13 year old Amos, whose 12 year old sister Dovey makes herself "responsible" for him, even though their mother correctly says he can take care of himself. Dovey beats up boys who come up behind Amos and make funny faces. She constantly worries how Amos will survive without her, even though he is so clearly independent—and yet he often follows Dovey around, making it clear he has no friends other than his family. At age 7, Dovey supposedly taught Amos to read not just words but also lips, so he can understand everything anyone says as long as they face him. This is one of the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. The narrator is a child, so maybe this is just filtered through her own ego, but there is no way in hell it’s true.

Amos was deafened by illness as an infant and never went to school. Parnell offers to pay his board and tuition at a deaf institute if Caroline (the eldest Coe sister) marries him. Dovey immediately spits out that Amos won’t be sent away. This is a fairly realistic attitude of hearing family members of deaf children.

Apparently the whole family chatters away to Amos during dinner and he follows along. But Amos was never taught to speak, so he’s just sitting there. I suspect he doesn’t understand everything because at one point Dovey insults Parnell and he busts out laughing, even though the comment isn’t funny (“If Parnell’s so salt-of-the-earth nice, I suspect he’d be in here helping [with the dishes] himself.”) This is what I call the illusion of inclusion. A deaf character can apparently understand everything happening around them, but does not have the ability to actually express themselves in a way that others understand. Instead, the hearing characters assume they know what the deaf character is thinking and feeling, when they cannot possibly know.

On that note, where are the home signs? Non-speaking, uneducated deaf members of hearing families will come up with a system of gestures for common needs/wants. There are zero signs or gestures in this book.

Halfway through the book, Dovey is upset by Paris’s comments, and Amos pats her back and says “Oh oh oh oh oh ca,” to mean “okay,” his VERY FIRST WORD EVER. Never mind that he’s been able to speechread for at least 5 years (if we believe Dovey, which I don’t) and has knowledge about voicing through vibration—and in fact practices it on himself—and he never makes a single word until this moment? Give me a friggin' break. Just give me a break, please. I’m not surprised this book won an award—it’s always some of the worst disability rep that wins. (I'm getting flashbacks to "A Single Light" by Maia Wojciechowska (1968).)

Parnell mentions rumors that Amos used to run around killing people’s chickens. Why is that a rumor? Dovey tells us that she knows there are people who believe Amos is “off-kilter,” but that makes no sense. What reason would they have to believe that and make up rumors about killing chickens? I totally believe that people think Amos is unintelligent. But a psychopath???

The only possible reason I can think of is that the author found out deaf people were sometimes sent to insane asylums, so she assumed that people believed deaf people were insane. That’s not the case. Many disabled people who were otherwise of sound mind were sent to asylums just because families didn’t want or couldn’t afford to take care of them. In the case of deaf people, if they couldn’t afford to send them to school, they were either kept at home or sent to asylum to keep them out of trouble, as lack of language access (therefore lack of socialization) causes behavioral issues. But no one thought they were insane. That’s ridiculous. Unless they were convicted of a crime, of course, which I suppose the author is attempting to foreshadow. It’s so poorly implemented that it does nothing but frustrate me (and probably anyone else who knows a little disability or deaf history).

On that note, whoever could have possibly guessed Amos killed Parnell? (I wonder sarcastically.) As soon as Parnell threw the brick, I knew Amos would do it. But I’m sure it must come as SUCH a shock to hearing readers. Sigh. It was in this moment that I realized why the author needed to set up that people think Amos is insane, and that it was a possibility he could be sent an asylum—it’s supposed to be foreshadowing, of a sort. But it’s poorly done, all things considered, because no one had any reason to believe that he was insane or killed chickens. And not one person (outside his family) ever suspected him of killing Parnell. So, uh????

But the fact he got away with manslaughter makes Dovey finally realize he doesn’t need her protection, I guess.

At the end, Caroline brings home a book on sign language and the family acts like they never knew it existed, despite knowing deaf institutes existed and refusing to send him to one. Once again, bull. Now this poor kid is trying to learn a 3-dimensional language from a book instead of being able to have role models and friends who actually use the language.

Blech all around.

The absolute only believable thing about Amos is that he knows the mountain well, since he explores it day in and out. Anyone who explored so extensively would know the mountain, regardless of hearing status. There’s nothing mystical about it, though Dovey seems to paint it that way.

I say that most of the books I read are my favorites but, this one has to be in the top 5! If you enjoy mystery, kids being real, and humor...this book is a must! I know you will want to read it when you see the size too! It is a quick read with a thick plot! It is about a 12 year old girl accused of murder! If the lead doesn't grab you, get to know Dovey!

Dovey Coe and her family live in the mountains of North Carolina. Dovey is firery and outspoken. Her brother Amos is deaf and her sister Caroline is the local beauty. When the area's richest young man takes an interest in Caroline, Dovey is worried that if the two marry, he will tear their world apart.

The story is set in the 1920s and the voice of Dovey grated on my ears for the first half of the book, but I did get used to it. Caroline is supposed to go to teacher's college and that sets Parnell to heavy wooing. He takes Caroline to Ashville to go to restaurants and assures her that if she marries him he will give her everything money can buy.

Parnell is basically a jerk and he and Dovey do not get along. Dovey's parents won't intercede in Caroline's relationship because they went through family disapproval at the beginning of their relationship and because, as her mother tells, they raised their children to make their own decisions.

Parnell reveals his true colors when he tells Caroline that won't be going to teacher's college and tops off his tirade by telling her he isn't even sure she can read.

This ends things for Caroline, but she isn't clear about this with Parnell. He is invited to what she refers to as an end of summer party but what everyone else realizes is a party to send Caroline off to college. Caroline thinks she won't have to be direct with Parnell, that he will realize she isn't going to marry him and will leave. She thinks he will be hurt and that is her goal.

Instead, Parnell asks her to marry him in front of all in attendance. Caroline turns him down and she isn't nice when she does it.

While Dovey's parents are dropping Caroline at college, Amos and Dovey are going to stay at their grandparents. Dovey realizes she forgotten their church clothes and runs home to get them. While she is there Parnell's sister drives up to the house and tells Dovey that Parnell has one of Amos's dogs at their family store and that Dovey must come and get it.

Once Dovey gets there she realizes Parnell intends to kill Amos's dog and she tries to stop him. She slashes him with her pocketknife, but does little damage and he hits her so hard she is knocked out. When she comes to, both Parnell and the dog are dead. Dovey is arrested for the crime and is taken to trial.

Parnell's family tells their side of the story in a way that Dovey fears will convince the judge deciding her case that she was responsible for Parnell's death. However, after studying the evidence and listening to the prosecution's witnesses Dovey realizes that she can easily prove her innocence. Parnell was killed by someone lifting a soda canister over their head and smashing it onto Parnell. Dovey shows she cannot lift the canister and the judge declares her innocence. There is blood on the canister that appears to belong to the killer. Had the story taken place today a DNA test would have solved the case in a heartbeat!

The town is still unsettled because the killer has not been found. Sometime later a dead vagrant is found. He has a wound on his hand and the judge decides he was the person responsible for Parnell's death.

Dovey assures herself that her lawyer cannot repeat what she tells him and then she reveals that she is certain her brother Amos killed Parnell. She wants to know if he is likely to be accused of the crime. The lawyer considers all angles and assures her that Amos's deed will not be discovered.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this story. I am not sure that the intended audience is ready to make a distinction between justifiable homicide and straight murder. Amos committed the crime because he was trying to defend Dovey, he had come looking for his dog and arrived at the store shortly after Parnell struck Dovey. A modern court would certainly find mitigating circumstances but I am uncomfortable with the portrayal of a 12-year girl as someone who could keep such a secret or should have to.

I absolutely loved Dovey Coe! I have been recommending this book to people and I think I will keep it in my personal library. It is set in the 1800's in North Carolina in the mountains. It is about a young girl named Dovey who is charged with murder of Parnell Calloway. Parnell is in love with Dovey's sister, Caroline but Caroline does not love him at all. Caroline wants to go to teacher college and the end of the summer and Parnell is set to change her mind. Dovey does not like Parnell at all. Mainly because he is a jerk, but also because he is very mean to Dovey and Caroline's brother Amos who is deaf. Dovey is shocked when Caroline seems to be falling for Parnell. Parnell proposes to Caroline at a going away party at the Coe's house. Caroline rejects him which infuriates Parnell. Caroline goes off to school with her parents and Dovey and Amos go to stay at their grandma's. Dovey goes home to get clothes for church for her and Amos but while there, Paris (Parnell's sister) comes and tells her that Parnell has one of Amos's dogs. Dovey goes and when they get to the Calloway's store she sees that Parnell is drunk. Parnell has Amos's dog but says he is going to teach Dovey a lesson for messing with his and Caroline's relationship. Parnell throws a rock at Amos's dog and kills it. Dovey lunges towards Parnell with a pocket knife and stabs him. That is all Dovey remembers. She wakes up and Parnell is dead and Mrs. Calloway comes in saying Dovey murdered her son. Dovey cannot remember but now she is on trial for murder. Will Dovey be convicted of the crime? What really happened that fateful day? Find out by reading Dovey Coe!

This is a literary analysis I did for a high school english honors class.
Dovey Coe, a great thrill ride. Reading this book was like bungy jumping off of a waterfall. It’s a thrill but at the same time you're scared to death. In the mountains of North Carolina in 1928, lives a 12 year old girl and her family. There’s Amos her deaf brother, Caroline her cute sister, and her parents. But in a small town can thing go wrong? Life Murder? The question of who did it lies on Dovey Coe as the whole town turns on her.
Dovey Coe is one amazing girl, but her words get twisted as a murder sweeps the town. A rich man of the name Parnell Caraway is in wishing to marry her older sister. The Coe family is not to friendly with the Parnell family. Parnell Caraways is the son of one of the richest man in town. Parnell asked to marry Caroline Coe, when he is turned down Parnell is angry and says some mean stuff to the Coes. Dovey pipes up and talks about how Parnell would better be off dead than hurting people around the town.
After Parnell is found dead, the word comes around that the Coe family had something to do with it. The only person on there mind was Dovey Coe and the mean words she said about the Parnell family. Dovey says that the only thing bad she did to Parnell was speak mean at his name. She says
“I want Parnell dead just as much as the next person, but I never killed him.”
Dovey Coe tells the family that Parnell was really mean to Amos(the deaf brother). He started rumors around town that Amos was not as smart at others and he was crazy. Dovey was Amos “protector” and she was always there for Amos when people treated him badly. But she never killed Parnell for his bad doings for Amos and his family.
Who would kill Parnell Caraway? Maybe It was Dovey or someone in the family. When you find out who killed Parnell Caraway you will be blown away with a mild case of “WHAT!!!” Dovey Coe is a huge must read for anyone who is into the typical small town murder.

Dovey Coe takes place in the late 1800s in North Carolina. It is about a young girl, Dovey Coe, and how she is wrongfully accused of murder. The man she is accused of killing is Parnell Caraway, who was in love with her sister, Caroline. She did not like him because of the way he treated her and her brother, Amos. Also, he was just a mean and nasty person in general who flaunted his wealth. However, she did not kill him. The reader goes on a journey with Dovey as she fights to keep her freedom and prove her innocence.
I really liked this book. I enjoy books that have an element of mystery, like this one does. Most of all I love the relationship between Dovey and her brother. During the late 1800s American Sign Language had just been created. Many Deaf people were seen as dumb and valueless. However, Dovey did everything she could to teach her brother how to communicate. I also really like how strong of a personality Dovey has. She is outgoing, outspoken, and compassionate. Books with strong female leads that challenge typical gender stereotypes are extremely important for young readers. I would definitely recommend this book!

“I…I’m an ALPHA sigma!”, Dovey said, wielding her knife and buffing out her bulky arms to threaten a 17 year old boy named Parnell. “What? Parnell asks curiously. He had just offered to send her deaf, struggling brother to a private school that would help him and change life. “YOU WON’T SEND AMOS AWAY!”, Dovey screeched. “I AM NOT AT ALL SELFISH FOR THAT BECAUSE…CAUSE I…I…”, Dumbo Dovey fumbled to find her inventive. “BECAUSE I SAID SO!!” she blurted out. “I AM SO COOL BECAUSE I AM NOT A GIRLY GIRL LIKE CAROLINE, I AM A BOYISH TOMBOY WHO CLIMBS THE MOUNTAINS AND DOESN’T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING AND IS RECKLESS!” She howled like an untamed wolf. “OH, AND ALSO- I MAKE MY SISTER’S DECISIONS FOR HER! IF SHE WANTS TO MARRY YOU EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELF AS A GOOD PERSON- I SAY YOU CANNOT, EVEN THOUGH I AM A PATHETIC 12 YEAR OLD!”

Dovey is an annoying little brat.

In court, Dovey very intelligently screams at Paris Caraway when she did nothing wrong, sounding like a rabid little girl. When her professional and kind lawyer who has done nothing bur help her tells her to stop and the judge will disapprove of her, Dovey scoffs, because she is obviously a professional at murder cases. Dovey, throughout the book, is a pesky little girl. The end!

Review:
I loved this book. I love the murder mystery books. I think this book teaches a great lesson about sticking up for others, as well as yourself. Amos is a perfect example of why it is okay to be different and that you should not let others pick on you for that. I highly recommend this book to students who are either going through bullying or who are exposed to bullying. I think every teacher should expose their students to this book.
