Katy is nervous about starting at boarding school, but she soon makes firm friends with the girls in her dorm. Everything would be fine if it weren't for one girl who's always mean. Katy knows that if she told her secret, everything would be fine - but Katy is determined not to tell anybody.
An author of series fiction for young readers, Ann Bryant was educated at the Royal College of Music, and worked for a number of years as a music teacher. She has also written for various BBC Schools Radio programmes, and composed the theme and incidental music for BBC TV's Tales of Aesop series.
This book was so unrelatable, I feel like I missed out on the wonders of tweenage. I used to boast it to myself that I have never been to a boarding school ( P. S. In Indian households, the threat " you'll be sent to a boarding school" was very common)
I can't imagine you doing anything like that. Not in a million years
I loved Naomi's character, she felt like one of my old friends. Also Mia.
I have some sympathy with the author here. She tried to introduce the characters, the scene and the surroundings but also stuck to a reading length that would suit her target audience. I feel that she could have used more space to make this book better.
The main character is one it is also easy to be sympathetic to. Her struggles of starting na new school away from home and with another character working against her is one most of us know (not necessarily from a boarding school).
The secrets that have to be kept add jeopardy to the story and those that are revealed drive the story along. It just felt like it needed some more depth.
The series is one I would come back to. It has enough interest for that. I am sure that the more that the author adds to the series then the better it will get
Katy is a really nice girl. But the problem is that she is SO nervous about going to boarding school, PLUS she has a giant secret that she isn't game enough to tell her friends. Then someone sets her up and everything goes terribly wrong.
I suddenly remembered today about this book (which was one of my FAVOURITES as a kid)... honestly, I wanted to go to Silver Spires so bad when I read this the first million times... its been YEARS but I still hope to finish this series someday soon :)
Absolutely perfect, exactly the kind of book that I truly, truly love.
