The intrepid Sherlock Bones and his quietly funny sidekick, Watts, and their animal friends are back to sneak around the museum and solve any mysteries that come their way. Full of fun, friendship and fascinating facts, this fabulous graphic novel is perfect for young readers who love adventure, mystery and a little bit of mayhem.
Hi there, I'm Sherlock Bones - tawny frogmouth skeleton, chief sleuth and star of all museum-related investigations!
Today is an exciting day because the museum has a new exhibit - and a new mystery!
Together with my partners, the ever-brilliant Watts and talking bundle of fur Grace, I'm here to track down the ghost that's destroying the museum.
You might not be able to hear Watts, because, technically, she's a stuffed parrot, but I always know what she's thinking.
And right now she's thinking: Can we solve the mystery of the haunted painting?
American-born Renée Treml moved to Australia in 2007, where she was immediately captivated by the unique wildlife in this country. Drawing on her background in ecology, Renee’s began writing stories and creating illustrations that focused on animals and the environment.
Renee works in her Surf Coast studio and is available for school, festival and library visits both in person and virtually. She has written and illustrated several picture books including award-winning Once I Heard a Little Wombat, and Wombat Big, Puggle Small, which was recently read on ABC’s Play School. She is also the creator of the hilarious graphic novels featuring Sherlock Bones.
In addition to books, Renée’s illustrations are featured on a range of stationery, ceramics and homewares available from Kim Wallace Ceramics, Urban Products, Rodriquez Tea Towels, and La La Land.
Bones, a skeletal tawny frogmouth, and Watts, a stuffed blue Indian ringneck parrot, are exhibits in the state Natural History Museum. Grace is a raccoon whose love of chocolate makes her exceedingly relatable. She’s also the only one of the three who needs to breathe.
It’s a good thing we’ve visited them today because there’s a new mystery to solve.
Really? A mystery? I love mysteries!
There’s a new exhibit opening tomorrow called Art & Science Alliance and rumour has it that one of the paintings is haunted. Luckily, Bones, Watts and Grace are on the case.
They’re going to need plenty of courage because apparently this ghost hisses. They may also need someone to help them pronounce ‘macabre’ and perhaps a dictionary so they can figure out what it means. They’re definitely going to need some chocolate (well, Grace and I do).
As usual, I loved the illustrations and accidental learning. I didn’t find this mystery as funny as the previous two but I did appreciate the inclusion of a drop bear in the new exhibit.
The intrepid protectors of The Natural Science Museum are back on the case. In their latest adventure, Sherlock Bones and his fellow investigators, Grace and Watts are on the hunt for a ghost that's destroying the Museum exhibits. Can this trio solve the mystery before the grand opening of a new exhibition? A fun story filled with corny jokes but also filled with fun facts about animals and creatures that are out of the ordinary. These animals are so quirky, they seem like they are make believe. This story is based on an albino wallaby that the author saw hopping about the hills of Tasmania.
I've seen the Sherlock Bones books around but never had the chance to pick one up and this was a very fun early graphic novel for younger & middle grade readers.
The Natural History Museum has a new exhibit - Art & Science - and Sherlock Bones, Watts and Grace find themselves investigating the mystery of a ghostly painting possibly haunting the new museum exhibit. Sherlock, a tawny frogmouth skeleton, is determined to find out what's going on, and alongside his friends they evade museum security, eccentric artists and surprising elements within the new displays all in the name of finding out the truth of what's making noises inside the museum.
This was an absolute blast to read. It's fun and funny, and full of information about natural history museums, their exhibits and why art and science interconnect. It's fast-paced, with quirky and engaging illustrations. I loved that you have a skeleton, a stuffed parrot (who only Sherlock Bones can here) and a live raccoon (Grace) who loves chocolate! They're definitely characters that will delight young readers.
I also adored all the puns and jokes woven into the conversations between Sherlock Bones and Grace. This is in part due to a student I'm teaching this year who lives for jokes and puns and while I was reading I was thinking about how my students would adore this book. And it was just funny jokes - Renee Treml has also woven in interesting facts that will interest children.
I'll definitely be going back to check out previous books in the Sherlock Bones series and I'm looking forward to sharing this story with my students.
Thank you to the publisher for the review copy - all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have never read a Sherlock Bones book before and I definitely won't be reading anymore. This was a slog to get through and so random. The mystery gets wrapped up at the end but by then, I gave up caring because so many random things showed up along the way. Not for me.
Treml Tremors #3 Sherlock Bones #3 Third and I assume last entry in the series as well it has been a few years since this one came out, anyway more of the same with same humour and style of story and well it was ok.
