Buffy's emotions run high after the tragic loss of her mother, but she can't mourn long, as the Hellmouth never sleeps. In Tom Fassbender, Jim Pascoe, and Cliff Richard's Ugly Little Monsters, the Slayer must contend with deformed demon-children, a volatile teenage sister, and a lovestruck vampire named Spike. Troubled by visions of monsters fought and of those to come, Buffy must sacrifice herself for Dawn, and her death takes a toll on the Scooby Gang. Without their Slayer, these close friends must band together and confront demons, reptilian sorcerers, and crazed forest creatures in stories written by Amber (Tara) Benson, acclaimed Buffy novelist Christopher Golden, and TV writer Jane Espenson, who presents the secret Season Six rendezvous between Buffy and Angel through the imaginations of the Slayer's closest friends. The original series reaches its grand finale with the gang re-united and going on a long trip to hell where Angel, Faith, and Oz return to Buffy's life.
***As always, there will be spoilers related to the TV series. I'll stray away from book related spoilers, though***
The seventh and final Buffy Omnibus did a lot for me in a whole lot of different ways. There were stories that were strictly for laughs, stories with nothing but sentimental value, and stories that focused on demon ass kicking non-stop. This was perfect. In this volume we deal with some of the most heartbreaking moments in the Buffyverse. Not only is Buffy dealing with Joyce's death in the first couple of stories, but later on the Scooby Gang is left dealing with Buffy's death as well. Add in the Buufy-Spike bang fest (which is a part I don't mind so much) and some reappearances of some awesome characters, and this is a major win.
I'm only going to talk about my favorites from this volume, because to talk about them all would take far too long. So here it goes.
Ugly Little Monsters was glorious. Luckily I read Scott Allie's intro and he mentioned a lot of cool things that are happening during this issue. If you skipped on the intro (shame on you!) I'll make it easy: The number three is big here. Not only is it a crazy magickal number, but that's also how many frames are on each page, not to mention the fact that the Avendschrook aka jealousy monsters travel in packs of three as well. It's a pretty cool and well thought out process for this run. But the best part of this story was Spike. In the previous volumes it was clear he hadn't reached the peak of his love for Buffy. In this volume, however, you get smacked in the face with his longing for her. The good thing about Spike (even though Buffy abuses his love for her, ugh) is that he doesn't just care about Buffy. He takes care of her friends too even though he really doesn't have to. And he especially looks after Dawnie. This is becomes prevalent in this story and continues on throughout this volume. Lots of love for Spike.
Next, and really my favorite, is Lost and Found. Dawn narrates most of it, and really dives into her emotions over Buffy's death, and how she feels responsible (See: Buffy sacrifices self so the world can survive, but really it was for Dawn). Everyone else is trying to ignore it as much as they can but it ends up backfiring pretty badly. I won't go into a lot of detail, because it's a pretty powerful addition to this omnibus, and I feel like you should live through it when it's happening. Just know I got weepy going through their emotions, seeing Spike fall further and further down without Buffy by his side, even having Anya express sympathy in her very special ex-demon way. It was pivotal to the entire Buffy franchise. This should have been filmed, honestly, because it dives so much deeper than the show did.
Lastly, I loved Note from the Underground. Okay, so maybe I loved it because Pike randomly showed back up (where have you been for six seasons, my original leather jacket wearing friend?!). I definitely liked Faith jumping back into the gang as well. And we all know I didn't love it because Angel was involved (ex-nay on the Angelus, I say). This story was a really good refresher for the fan who is about to jump into season eight. It goes back through the boyfriends of Buffy, the mistakes that she made, the people who are important to her, heartbreak, loss, and even all of the happy times in between. I feel like it really gets you ready for new Buffy adventures. We even revisited the original Slayer. Plus, Xander makes a lot of silly jokes that Anya gives him hell over.
There were also stories in here that were just plain funny (See: Reunion, where Anya delves deeper into her fear of the ever terrifying Bunny Rabbit!) and a pretty rad Willow-Tara-Dawn only issue. This was just a winner. And a great way to end this part of the series. I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT SEASON EIGHT HOLY SHIT. Bye, now.
Solid collection and a decent end to Dark Horse's classic run of BTVS comics.
Ratings for each story: Night of a Thousand Vampires 3 Ugly Little Monsters 3 Chaos Bleeds 3.5 Lost and Found 3.5 Wilderness 2 The Death of Buffy 4 Reunion 4 Withdrawal 3 Note from the Underground 3
An epic end for the BTVS Omnibus. There was closure for past villain encounters, epic reunions, and surprising tales. Chaos Bleeds is a major favorite of mine, but I also look back on playing the video game. Though short, it was so awesome to see an alternate dimension bleed into Sunnydale and to see Sid. He was a memorable and powerful personality. And the recalling of Adam and nearly every other memorable demon and monster was intense! When you get cameos like that then it's a great and nostalgic ending. Eye-catching and epic artwork alongside engaging storytelling. BTVS has always done a great job in tying its stories in from the past and I like that. The memory this show has is a big part of why I think it stays a powerful favorite for many. It's that way for me. Still, this hit some emotional spots for me much like the series did. This one is probably my favorite from the entire Omnibus collection.
This was a perfect end to the Buffy omnibus series! Every comic had a clear place in time, making it easy to tell from just one or two text bubbles where in each season an arc took place. The stories were also just more enjoyable than some of the ones in earlier books, and each one felt essential to the collection. I also really appreciated having the series end on an arc that Angel, Faith, and even Pike appeared in! Definitely one of my favorite, if not my favorite, Buffy comic collections.
I really got into this collection that tied into the end of Season 5 and the beginning of Season 6 - the stories were more interesting and varied. Faith and Angel guest appearances were great.
But did anything ever come of Chaos Bleeds?? Was that going somewhere? I’m curious.
really enjoyed this collection, the stories set in between s5 and s6 were great filler for such big moments in the show like Buffy’s death, especially enjoyed the two centered around how each character was dealing with their grief. also the snippet of Buffy/spike was also !!!
This collection takes place between Seasons 5 & 6 and works to explain scooby life without Buffy and what drove the characters to take the actions they did.
This last volume of the ominbus set has some very good storylines. Looking forward to continuing on with the season 8 comics and others in the buffyverse.
After the loss of Buffy's mother, the Slayer must deal with deformed demon-children, a volatile teenage sister, and a love-struck vampire, Spike. Buffy must sacrifice herself for Dawn, and her death takes a toll on her Gang of friends. Without their Slayer, these close friends must band together and confront demons, reptilian sorcerers, and crazed forest creatures.
I loved the inner workings of all the characters as a result of the events happen around and to them.
3.5 stars. I've been on a roll this past week with BtVS and Angel graphic novels so I thought I'd just keep going and finish off the last Buffy omnibus. This should bring me up to date to start reading my long neglected single issues of season 8.
Volume 7 was actually pretty great. Not as awesome as Volume 5, but most of the stories dealt with pretty big events in Buffy's life so there weren't a lot of filler stories.
Notes From the Underground had buckets of cameos from the Angel crew to Pike from the original film and pre-season one stories. I loved seeing Faith again, and I'm glad they brought (mostly) everyone together again for this last story that not only was badass, but also served as a cliffsnotes version of the whole series.
My other favourite had to be Reunion. One of the least serious stories in the collection but it was damn charming. Xander, Anya and Dawn muse about what occurred during the meeting between Buffy and Angel when she with some hilarious conclusions. Everyone's interpretation is drawn in a different style, changing details as they see fit. Dawn goes for the romantic rendezvous:
Anya's practical meeting at Denny's interrupted by her favourite creatures:
And Xander's Angel is not as great as he thinks he is version:
I'm being generous by giving this three stars. Part of my problem was that it seemed many of the stories connected to specific episodes or past comics and I felt that because I couldn't remember the details of those prior stories, I was a bit disconnected. It may be because this season of the show wasn't the most interesting, in my opinion, thus making it kind of difficult good stories against that backdrop. I didn't think the issues about the characters dealing with Buffy's death and return did anything to add to how this was handled on the show. The best entry, I think, was the last one which served as a decent enough crossover episode with Angel. The main themes of the show were woven well through this one. It did feel like a few too many "throwback" characters were brought in just for cheap thrills but otherwise it was pretty good. Overall with these comics, there were some pretty good ones, especially in the middle of the collection (I'm talking about all 7 volumes here) but I'm glad to be done with these and ready to move onto Season Ten!
The Buffy Omnibuses collect various comic books that ran parallel to the TV show. The seventh and last one focuses on Seasons 5 and 6 and therefore deals with the aftermath of Buffy's death and her resurrection and the stories here are at time Buffy-free and concentrate on the Scooby Gang's emotions following Buffy's sacrifice.
Those collections are great for fans of the TV series. Only drawback is that some of the characters at times look a little bit.... off, I guess is the right word.
There were no Buffy comics for the seventh season so next in line (whenever I come to it) will be Season 8 stories that were exclusively created for the comic book medium and that are collected in a separate series of graphic novels.
I mean, mostly I was relieved to finally have this book after waiting for years to get my hands on it. Like all the other BTVS omnibuses, it had a similar composition of hit/miss comics. I really like the ones that add to the existing canon rather than just random offshoots featuring the same characters but no relevance to the plot. The last comic was cool, just because of all the cameos they're able to pull off in comic book form that couldn't happen on the show due to actor scheduling conflicts. Season six is my favorite of the series, so this was an especially anticipated read.
Does anyone know if there will be an eight omnibus?

Another stellar collection of comics - maybe it's because I'm just a massive Buffy geek, I can't find fault in this series at all! I just like how everything has been sorted chronologically to avoid confusion and the inclusion of stories that not only focus on characters other than Buffy but the ones that revisit past issues (hello Hoopy the Bear!). Now I'm on to season eight... And boy, I'm excited!
Coincides with Buffy Season 5. A little less good than the previous few volumes, they seem to have regressed back to simpler stories. The art was okay, but for all the trouble I went to get this from the library, I was a little disappointed.
Great volume! I wasn't stunned by the artwork at all times but the stories were great. Notes from the Underground was my favorite, tying all the previous volumes together! Loved it!
