A Billion Hours of Good: Changing the World 14 Minutes at a Time

Rate this book
A billion hours is equivalent to 114,000 years. That's how much good we're going to do together. Just 14 minutes at a time.

You don't need more money, or time, or even another election cycle to bring transformational change to your community. What you need is to believe that daily microdoses of good over years and years can create a great return. Stop waiting for the big change moment and seize the good that you can do today.

Join Chris in pledging 1 percent of your time (14 minutes a day) to make the world a better place. Learn how to solve old problems in new ways, and walk with Chris as he shows you how he started Mercy Project-a nonprofit committed to ending child trafficking in Ghana. See how compassion and care can serve as rocket fuel for deep courage and untapped creativity.

Our responsibility in a world filled with suffering is to care, show up, and act. Not once, not twice, but a little bit every day for the rest of our lives. Accept this invitation and join a global movement for extraordinary good. Impossible alone. Transformational together.

Wow. This book came at just the right time for me. In fact, it is probably just the right time for our world. I found myself smiling and nodding as I quickly turned page after page. Chris Field inspires through excellent story-telling but also provides a practical blueprint for us all to follow to create A Billion Hours of Good 14 minutes at a time. I want to share this book with everyone.
―Terri Dorsey , Director of Executive Development, Boys & Girls Clubs of America

In A Billion Hours of Good , Chris pilots a metaphorical lawnmower. He clears a path by anticipating excuses and mowing them over. Chris started with my heart and then nimbly made his way into the part of my brain that too easily generates retorts-and in that very spot he worked his magic. Using pragmatism and relatable stories, Chris showed me I am capable of doing hard things, motivated me to do hard things, and helped me believe in my ability to make a meaningful impact in the world-in just 14 minutes a day.
―Corey Oliver, Former Senior HR leader at Nike and Deloitte

I'm all in! If you want to make a difference, if you are thinking about the legacy you want to leave, then this book is for you. Chris provides both practical and inspiring tools for making a difference-14 minutes at a time-through his mastery of story. Using a small piece of our day, we can make a difference in our world. A Billion Hours of Good gives us exactly what we need today to generate significant change in the world, wherever we are in our lives and whatever we have to give. The biggest gift and investment we can make is our time. This book teaches us how to spend it wisely. It is incredible how much progress we can make with small increments of time when we commit to being consistent. I'm all in for the Billion Hours of Good movement and for making a difference together. Are you?
―Shannon Deer , PhD, Interim Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, Mays Business School at Texas A&M University

With the skills of a true teacher, Chris Field not only inspires readers to live a life of courage, compassion, and creativity, he walks us through specific steps needed to shift our way of seeing the world and then motivates us to put those thoughts into action-driving us to commit just 1 percent of every day to do more good for others. He's delivered a well-structured, practical guide with emotional stories that will shape many a soul, all while fueling a collaborative effort to build A Billion Hours of Good . A must-read for anyone wanting to live a meaningful life.

Truly loved this one. We have so much time our day and while many of us are SO busy, taking 1% of our day to invest in doing good seems so manageable. That 1% is 14 minutes… Chris Field is engaging, persuasive and passionate about everyday people maximizing their days and their 14 minutes to do good in the world around them. This book reminded me about the passion my dad has and how he has always pointed me to similar things. Love love love!!!

To know or read the work of Chris is a masterclass in doing good.

This book is a practical guide to shaping your thinking and action toward a life of impact, beginning with compassion and courage, and furthering it with creativity and change. His personal stories of his family, friends, and neighbors, and an inside look at his founding of an organization called Mercy Project that has rescued nearly 200 kids out of slavery in Ghana are truly inspiring. But I think where this book shines is Chris' earnest belief that regular people can give a little time and effort, and it really can change the world, especially when we do it together. I believe it and this book hands us proven, tangible tools to remake the world into a better place. If it sounds radical and visionary, that's because it is. Because that's what it takes to disrupt for good, and move and shake the status quo, and dismantle systems of oppression that don't allow for the human flourishing this world is so desperate for.

This book is for you if you know you want to put your gifts and energy to good use and aren't quite sure how to do it in a way that's helpful. This book is also for you if you're wild about making an impact, you think or know you are, and you want someone a little farther down the road to remind you of the courage, compassion, creativity, and resilience you already have (thank you!)

With Chris as guide, I am reimagining my own impact, and I know it's for good.

*I received a copy in advance for my honest review*

"Changing the world happens one word, one choice, one minute at a time."- pg. 25

We all talk about wanting to change the world, but it seems like a huge task, doesn't it? But that's because we often think changing the world requires tons of money and large amounts of free time. In his book, Chris Field shows us that as long as we open our hearts and have compassion, we can change the world with small steps, and our only cost is time;14 minutes a day to be precise. The world is changed when millions of people make small, daily changes right in their own backyard. We can share our talents, share our joy, share our love, 14 minutes at a time. "A Billion Hours of Good" is inspiring. Since reading it, daily I think, "how can I make a positive change in my community today?" The answer is one choice at a time.

It says good things, great and inspiring stories, but has nothing unique that I haven’t read a dozen times elsewhere. Chris is the founder and head of the “Mercy Project” which rescues children slaves in Ghana. We personally support this mission (financially) and so they sent us Chris’ book. This guy is amazing. No question about it. A true servant doing wonderful things. If I was his editor I would have suggested the 14 minutes a day theme be better integrated in the book. The opening chapter relies on it heavily and the end chapter does, as well. Most of the book, however, has nothing to do with the 14 minute theme. The theme is lost in most of the book. That said, filled with great stories. Inspiring.

What are your biggest hopes and boldest dreams? This is what the introduction of this book got me to thinking as I began to really dig in to see what the author, Chris Field was trying to tell me. He says the book is an "invitation to stop believing the lie that you need more time and/or money before you can use your passion and talent to make an impact that outlasts your life." This book is encouraging me to be available and for me to not have a lack of confidence that hinders the good that I could do.

Chris unpacks the topics of compassion and courage. If you need the challenge to take action on your passions instead of continually putting them off this book is for YOU!

Excellent book with practical and manageable actions everyone can do every day. It is inspiring and motivating. The ease in which you can read this allows you to finish this quickly but I chose to take my time so I can digest each chapter one at a time almost like a good sermon. I would recommend not rushing through it too quickly even though the writer style is easy to want to keep reading. I guarantee there is something for everyone in this book. So many nuggets of good truth laced with compelling stories that make the reader feel like they were right then when it happened.

Chris Field finds a way to explain how to find a purpose in just 14 minutes of your time a day. So if you've ever felt like you wanted a way to take action and do more then this is the book for you. He writes, "The full power of good is almost never experienced at the moment it happens. It lives on through the person we showed compassion toward, who will then show it to the next person, ans on and on it will go well beyond our original act" (78). Let's join the compassion train together and do some good. If you are stuck on the how, just pick up his book!

If you are looking for inspiration on how to use the small moments in your daily life to impact your family, your business, or your community then this is the book for you.

One of my favorite quotes: "Rather than waiting for someone else to come along and fix the problem, compassion compels us to ask ourselves the question, "Why not me?"

Whether you are feeling stuck or on the precipice of something great then Chris's book will encourage and challenge you to use your unique gifting to impact our world.

An easily digestible book that will inspire you to begin right where you’re at to create a better world for us all. Each chapter is a little nugget of goodness that will give you the courage to move past your fear of failure to make the difference we intend to, but just don’t strategically plan for in the world. I highly recommend this book if you find yourself filled with good intentions and idealism, but struggle to put action to those ideas!

This is about little ways and big ways you can take those extra wasted minutes and hours in a day in order to do good for other people. Whether big or small projects, there’s always ways you can give up your time and help make the world a better place. I would love to say that I’m super inspired, and want to go start a movement or a charity or some such thing, but it was mostly just pretty words and lovely examples.

This book is an easy read that is full of inspiration. Step-by-step processes and real life examples of how to give 14 minutes a day for a meaningful impact. Now I need to go back and review the bullet points and take action. I also need to find out was the one who referred this book to me, I can’t remember.

“A Billion Hours Of Good” can really motivate you to start some charitable act on your own. The author provided ways you can find time to help organizations even when you don’t think you have the time or talent. Finding ways to use your own talents towards helping others is probably the easiest way to fit charitable acts into your life style.

Quick read! Useful ideas.
