Leadership expert, activist, and executive coach, Reiner Lomb, knows that to address the many issues of our time we need to come together and collaborate. Yet we are divided - not by a wall made of bricks but one made of emotions, and this prevents us from working together. In his timely book, ASPIRE, he weaves leadership lessons learned from living through the reunification of East and West Germany, as well as building multiple businesses, to demystify the process for creating a vision of an aspirational new future. A servant leader, driven by a desire to facilitate sustainable change and show others how to do the same, Lomb artfully shows readers how to use the power of emotions to influence people to change their behavior and make that vision a reality. This book is the answer for anyone who has ever asked the questions, “What are the most essential leadership competencies to create the change I aspire to, and how can I learn them without spending too much time?” Whether you are in a formal leadership role or are a rising leader, entrepreneur, or changemaker driven by a desire to use your voice to create change, in this book you will discover how to positively influence key stakeholders, build trust, lead with optimism, ride the waves of negative emotions, mobilize people to take action, and choose resiliency in the face of setbacks.
“I have often said that effective servant leadership is an inside job—a question of the heart. Reiner Lomb’s book ASPIRE, and the leadership model it is named for, addresses this question beautifully. Read this book and discover, analyze, and apply Lomb’s seven essential leadership behaviors and emotions for creating positive change. When you do, it will unleash your servant’s heart and inspire you to lead at a higher level.” Ken Blanchard, Coauthor of The New One Minute Manager
My lifelong goal is to help a spirit of kind cooperation and mutual reciprocity flourish in the world. I believe it's the path to genuine unity, and will lead to the betterment of the world because it empowers everyone to contribute in that process, and will value all of those contributions.
Key qualities in that process are trust, hope, and resilience. This book's timely arrival, when extreme divisiveness threatens (even seeks) to undermine those, reinforced for me that the remedy truly resides in us, and in our capacity to honor ourselves and others in making our unique contributions toward what will benefit all of us, and the one planet we share. A big missing piece in that, I've found, is a genuine understanding of our emotions and how we can use them both creatively and constructively toward our highest aspirations.
The seven essential emotions the author explores here are ones he obviously knows from the inside-out, both on his own path and those of many others he has accompanied and served over many decades. With an inviting approach, and a sincere voice, he reveals the remarkable power of emotions that is freely available to everyone, and the highly transforming power of the awareness and understanding they can bring.
I rarely do the exercises in works like these, I usually don't feel drawn to. But I found myself applying them easily to challenges with others that have been persistent, and confounding. I felt inspired with a willingness I hadn't felt previously. And I began to see and feel differently about those situations, and those people. It was a bit like seeing clouds part, seeing steps I could take, and then witnessing unimagined, encouraging outcomes that flowed from them.
The author's use of the term "gateway" seems to perfectly describe the possibilities of what these seven emotions can open for us. As we gain awareness about and from our emotions, they can function like the helpful -- and informative -- resources they are meant to be. They help us maximize our power of choice in the matters over which we have choice or control. and avoid consuming ourselves with those over which we don't. They can help us free ourselves from outworn, often inaccurate beliefs and limitations in the stories we build about ourselves. They can also help us build strong relationships with others and help us learn and work and grow together.
The companionship of this book changed the way I FELT as I read it and pondered the power and potential of these key emotions it explores. It's rare that a work of nonfiction prompts this for me and when it does, I know that it's leading to spiritual perception, as well as new knowledge. The sections and chapters about optimism, trust, and positivity were especially helpful for me.
Whatever assists my own growth and development ultimately has its highest expression in how I can share it with others and support them. This is a book I expect to revisit and share from frequently.
I used to read many “business” books, but over time, I found them dry, repetitive, and formulaic. I came across Mr Lomb’s book and it was a pleasure to read. I felt that I could apply what I’ve learned from chapter one. For me this is about connecting with people; useful in business of course but equally useful in non-business situations. For me, there is a person in my life that I have always been cordial with but he was a complete turn off. He was brash, full of opinions that I 100% didn’t agree with and was never open to new ideas. Aspire gave me the tools to try a build trust. I learned a lot about him and I learned a lot about myself. Through discussion (and an openness to explore the root of our issues) I found that I intimidated him - shocking to me because I feel like the least intimidating person I know 😀 it is something I only heard once in my life, early in my career from a boss who was very much like this acquaintance. But it was his perception and in my mind, I put the blame on him. By practicing the tools I learned our relationship has vastly improved. I wouldn’t say that we will ever be best friends but there is no longer the same feeling in the air when we are around each other; we even laugh at each others jokes. I didn’t have the tools to do this prior to reading this book.
Inspirational, motivating, timely – YES, YES, YES! However, this book is not just for leaders, this book is for anyone and everyone who seeks change. The information given is really about how to live your life from your heart. With meaning. For the good of all. To make each interaction purposeful. To enhance all your relationships, including the one with yourself. The skills are sequential, building upon one another. They are practical and easy to incorporate into life. Be sure to read the preface and introduction - it makes a difference. Succinct, easy to read and understand, this book is the perfect "how to" for life. It just makes sense! Essential information that is truly transformational. If this is taught to our youth, WOW! what a difference we would see on this planet and among all humans. Highly, highly, recommended.
As General Manager of an international business, I can say, this book is a must read for any engaged manager and anyone who aspires to drive change and innovation. Reiner Lomb provides a structured and emotion-based approach to influence peer groups, co- workers and team members. The practical examples and best practices make it easy to understand and learn the seven essential emotions for fostering change. Going forward, I will use the emotion-based leadership skills in ASPIRE to accelerate my next passion projects and achieve my goals faster, and more effectively.
As the “convener” of two Colorado-based grassroots climate organizations, I wasn’t sure how useful Aspire would be to me. However, I found that the book’s focus on the emotional component of leading organizations both rang true in my experience as an activist and helped me analyze situations in which I and others could have done better. The author presents “seven essential emotions for leading positive change” that build on each other nicely. I believe that people in leadership roles in activist organizations – and that should be all activists, eventually – would do well to read this book.
This book contains good info for those who are looking to learn how to channel their emotions into positivity and change.
This book gets down to a human level, which is something I do not much see in books that are considered self help. It details accounts of people having to use these tactics and this information to change their mindset for the good of themselves those around them.
Overall, I’d recommend this book for those who are truly looking to change their outlook and their interactions with others.
This book takes the reader beyond the traditional thinking about management. It challenges anyone who reads this book to reflect on how they approach leadership. Additionally the book opens up a persons perception and understanding of the various roles different emotions play in the process of being an effective leader. Aspire is recommended reading for anyone who wants to create positive change in any organization.
I have read (and re-read) ASPIRE and have found it to be an extremely practical guide to incorporating emotional intelligence in how I lead and inspire my team at work.
The stories of individual leadership are inspiring and really make it clear how I can apply some of those behavioral drivers in my own way of leading, managing, and collaborating with my team.
Thank you to Reiner for this awesome book! Really instrumental in work.
I choose to read this book to learn how shaping my emotions can impact my leadership style and help my team. I found the book is an easy read and gave me time at the end of every chapter to do a retrospective.
This is definitely a book I will be recommending to my friends and leadership.
Very informative. This book really touches your emotions and how they relate to business decisions and development. But also on a personal level. Recommend for anyone who wants to self develop into a better leader, etc.
There are some very helpful scenarios in this book. I will be rereading the content and applying some of these practices in my managerial style. I can’t wait to see the positive changes in my team
