"As terrible as the factory was, Rebecca understood that Uncle Jacob and Josef needed their jobs. They were trapped, like the other workers."Rebecca and her cousin, Ana, start the book with pretending to make a movie about a factory worker (Rebecca) and the owner (Ana) but Rebecca quickly loses interest when she feels Ana is being unrealistically mean.
Aunt Fannie and a few other women from the tenement building join their men on the picket line and she gives firm instructions that the children are to remain behind.
"They've gone on strike!" Aunt Fannie covered her mouth with her hand.
"Get your hat," yelled the women. "We're going to march on the picket line."
But Rebecca feels spurred to action. If no one does anything, nothing will be accomplished but if everyone contributes, then they could see lasting change.
"A picket line is no place for children."
Sheeeeesh.
"We have to do our part, Ana, even if it might be dangerous."
