When Oran falls to his death from the Cliffs of Moher, his friends believe it was an accident. One witness is convinced it was murder.
The police accept the account of Oran’s friends, but the witness will not be silenced.
Why is a stranger accusing Ben Weston of murder when his friends are convinced they witnessed an accident? Why would Ben kill his childhood friend? Plagued by sensationalist tabloid stories, Ben’s wealthy family need to clear his name.
Part time freelance reporter, Aoife Walsh, is coping with a dead-end office job and a lecherous boss when the Weston family hires her to help prove their son’s innocence. As someone who’s had a relative accused of murder, Aoife can empathise with the Westons’ situation.
Aoife’s investigation sees ex-lovers and innocents, busybodies and frenemies crawl out of the woodwork. It’s no surprise that their stories aren’t lining up perfectly. But who is lying?
Aoife’s relentless pursuit of answers will put her in jeopardy— leaving her life, and the truth, hanging in the balance.

I really enjoy this authors writing! This is the second book by her that I have read and I flew through it. The chapters are short and for most of the book I felt like I couldn’t trust anyone in this story.
If you’re looking for another indie author to support, look no further!
Where Loyalties Lie is Book 4 in an Aoife Walsh Thriller by Val Collins. Book 4 was exciting and I really had to pay close attention so I would not miss any clues. It is not a complex story, but a lot goes on and there are a lot of characters. This thriller really hit the mark for me. The pace is quick and non stop action. I really was surprised with the why of the many murders. I enjoy books that have surprises and twist and turns. I am hoping that Val Collins writes a book 5! I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Where Loyalties Lie is a fast-paced a thriller murder mystery. Aoife Walsh is a part-time journalist who has a knack for that being able to ask the right question and solve complicated mysteries. Where Loyalties Lie is the fourth in the Aoife Walsh thriller series by Val Collins.
Four young people are going to hike along to Seaside the morning after a night out at the pub. Three of the four are fairly hung over but it is the one who was the designated driver falls off the cliff. The three people claim it was an accident but one of the neighbours claims she saw one of the boys push the other boy off the cliff. Aoife’s friend Orla asks her to go and ask a few questions just to clarify what the neighbour saw and to make sure she’s telling the truth because of the accused boy is from a wealthy family and his father’s law partners want this settled quickly. Aoife asks a series of questions to the friends. Everything indicates that the two boys are the best of friends who grew up together. Many of their university friends also say they are very nice boys but there seems to be a hint that things aren’t always as they seem. It is Aofie’s job to sort out all the conflicting messages and determine the truth.
I really enjoy Val Collins writing because her character development is quite fascinating. Aoife is a really unique individual who struggles to make a living. She also has some difficulties with an ex-husband which keeps getting in the way of her making future commitments. But she is a very good mom and she takes care of her daughter, while doing an excellent job of solving mysteries in her journalist capacity.
Val Collins books are unique and the stories are interesting because they don’t appear to be about serious issues, hardly even crimes, until Aoife starts to asking questions. As the facts are revealed the issues become more and more complicated and there are a lot of twists which add to the complexity and interest of the stories.
Collins also has a short a glossary at the beginning to help you understand and/or pronounce the Irish names. This is quite unique aspect of these books. Some of the side issues give you a feel for the culture of Ireland which adds another dimension.
I recommend this book to people who love murder mysteries but also murder mysteries that are unique. I give it a five on five. I want to thank BookSirens and the author for providing me with a digital copy of the book. I give this a review voluntarily.

Val Collins is a native of Ireland; Val began reading at the age of three and still devours books at the rate of one per week. Her favourite authors range from Philippa Gregory and Sophie Kinsella to Lee Child and Linwood Barclay.
“Listen and learn.”
Aoife agrees to favor her friend, not thinking it would consume her. But the deeper she gets in this sordid tale, the closer she comes to the edge.
This was a journey. What starts as an innocent enough favor quickly becomes so much more. I loved the dual storylines in this book and that we got to know Aoife so much more.
I love how determined and stubborn Aoife can be. She refuses to be taken for a fool, and her gut is usually right. As a freelance journalist, I love that she cannot ask truly hard-hitting questions. The way her mind works, she sees things from multiple perspectives, and she observes the littlest details.
The plot moved very quickly, and the twists and turns continued until the end. Just when I thought I had a handle on where the story was going, another puzzle piece was revealed. It was all tied together so well by the end, all of the seemingly random or unimportant details suddenly came back with a spotlight.
The characters in this novel were so well done, and I fell a little more in love with both Aoife and Conor. Their relationship is so well balanced, and the love and respect are so obvious. I enjoyed Orla throughout this book, and I appreciate her friendship with Aoife.
The aspect of being ultra-wealthy and getting away with anything was well played in this novel. Val represented that imbalance of justice so perfectly. The concept that because one is rich, they can do whatever and get away with it was done in a seamless portrayal with the Weston family.
I devoured this book in a single sitting, unable to put it down. Once the ball started rolling, due to the momentum, there was absolutely no stopping. Every chapter plunges you further into the story until you’re free-falling into the chaos.
I enjoy this series so much more with the release of each new book, and I look forward to the next installation.
It’s a great coincidence that I finished Where Loyalties Lie on #IrelandReads Day (2-25-22)! This was my first book by native of Ireland Val Collins and I’ve just downloaded Book 3 in her Aoife Walsh series (all of the books can all be read as standalones). I encourage you to visit her Instagram page @valcollinsbooks.
This is a story of privilege (how often do the rich get away with crime?), dysfunctional relationships (who is lying?), and the relentless pursuit of the truth. There are a lot of characters, but the author provides a written and audio guide to pronunciation, which is very helpful in allowing the narrative to flow without tripping over names!
While it was a quick read, I did think the story ended abruptly, with a last sentence that seemed out of place, but despite that I really enjoyed the story line, the setting and Collins’ writing style. Thanks to NetGalley, VCB Publishing and Hidden Gems Books for an advance reader’s copy.
Oran and Ben had been inseparable since they met at school, sharing weekends, holidays, and a uni house but then one of them dies in tragic circumstances. Only one witness of many is absolutely certain it was murder and when part-time office worker and freelance reporter Aoife, pronounced Eee-fah, Walsh is asked to look into the case she is determined to find out why.
It soon becomes clear there is far more to the whole business than meets the eye. At the same time Aoife is dealing with a new temporary job and getting used to her ever evolving relationship with police detective fiance Conor. With evidence mounting but also becoming more confusing, desperation seems to be taking over some of those she has considered culpable, leading Aoife into more danger than she thought possible.
This is the fourth Aoife Walsh novel and is another great read. The scenes in the office and with Conor and daughter Amy worked well alongside the murder investigation where plenty of twists, turns, and potential killers, kept the story flowing towards a very satisfying end. There was also an epilogue of sorts which tied off the last few loose ends very nicely thank you.
This is a good standalone mystery, but can also be read as part of an entertaining series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the fourth book in this series. It can be read as a stand alone. I will definitely be reading the first three. When a young man, Oran falls to his death off a cliff all the witnesses say it was an accident but one. One claims he was pushed. Looking for answers and the truth Oran's family hires Aoife Walsh, a reporter to investigate. What she finds put her life in danger. This was a fast paced thriller that kept me guessing. I highly recommend.
An Irish journalist is having financial hard times, as there is little work in her trade, so she is taking a part time job with a serial groper, when a rich couple hire her to find prove a witness is lying about seeing their son push a friend off the edge of a cliff.
It seemed like the sleuth brought a lot of trouble upon herself.
With the death of Oran when he fell off the cliff side, tangled webs and cover-ups hide what really happened. A freelance journalist, Aoife, investigates the claims of Nancy that Oran was pushed to his death by Ben. Also, a side plot of a boss, Tony gives our female protagonist problems as she tries to stop unwanted groping. Through interviews and conversations layers of stories are revealed to bring you closer to the truth. Excellent read that keeps you searching along with Aoife for what really happened and why! Will be looking for more from this author!
I really enjoy this series so I was really pleased to be given an advanced copy by BookSirens and this is my honest review. One thing that I really like about these books is how Aoife goes about investigating just by talking to different people, it’s gives the reader the opportunity to pick up on little clues throughout the book. I liked the way that Val Collins blends the main mystery with things that are going on in Aoifes personal life, despite Jason being a secondary character he never fails to make me seethe and I’m hoping he gets his comeuppance soon! This story was well written as usual, there wasn’t a lot of shocks but the writing and the characters are so good that I still enjoyed it a lot and can’t wait for the next installment.
Compulsive and gripping! Suspenseful, addictive and complex! A very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters. The suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. Will keep you swiping the pages furiously. Worthy of your TBR list.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from in order to read and provide a voluntary and honest review, should I choose to do so.
This is a fun fast paced mystery. I really liked the writing style, the way it is written in quick segments kept me engaged. I kept telling myself “after this section I’ll take a break” but then I’d keep going and say the same thing over and over until hours had passed, it’s like the pringles of books!
This is the second Aoife Walsh book I have read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to Booksirens for sending me an advanced copy to read and review.
In this book Aoife is asked to investigate the death of a boy who fell over a cliff. While the police believe it was accidental, a witness is convinced his best friend was responsible….and is making this fact well known.
Alongside investigating the case, she is also trying to resist the advances of her boss at work, and maintain her relationship.
The strands of the book work well together, and the plot moves along at a good pace.
Although this is part of a series, I think it would work really well as a stand alone, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story.
Surprising, thrilling mystery: did someone kill Oran and if so, who and why? Another intriguing story about Aoife, part time reporter and sometimes sleuth. Aoife is asked by her good friend Orla who works for an attorney’s office to help prove Ben’s innocence so that the lawyers can pursue a libel suit against his accuser. Aoife must first prove that Nancy Duggan is crazy or unstable for insisting that Ben killed Oran, best friends forever. Nancy seems extremely angry but not insane. While investigating, Aoife is discovering so much about a group of young people, mostly acquaintances of the murdered boy, Oran and Ben the accused. At the same time, Aoife is having trouble at her part time job, trying to stay civil to her Ex, Jason, care for her 4yo daughter, Amy and navigating a new relationship with her boyfriend, now fiancé, Conor. Whoa Ms. Collins packs a lot into her books but it was so worth it! Poor Aoife as a single mom feels like she’s just treading water some days, but you’ll love how she gets her own brand of justice. The ending will keep you on the edge of your seat. Stunning ending. If you like page-turner mysteries in a well-thought out thriller, read this book. It is part of a series, but it is not necessary to start at number one to understand what’s going on. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through BookSirens.
I received an ARC for this one, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Yet another excellent pageturner from Val Collins!! I have read all of Aoife Walsh's mystery dabbles, but this one was without a doubt the most enjoyable one so far. While the plot starts off quite simple, it went in so many unexpected directions that I just couldn't help but keep myself glued till the book reached it's final solution. In the future, I don't think I would even bother reading the synopsis or catching an abstract, just the author's name on the cover would have me convinced to grab a copy.
It was a very enjoyable read. The characters are relatable, and after reading all of the books in the series, it feels like visiting old friends. As always, Aoife manages to get herself into all types of dangerous situations on different fronts. This time it is a part-time job she has taken on and the investigation she is working on. The story has several red herrings that keep the reader on their toes; at least, it did for me. There is confusion and strife on several fronts: job, investigation, and home life. I thoroughly enjoy this series and highly recommend it.
I received a review copy from BookSirens and this is my honest opinion. I would like to thank them and Ms. Collins for the opportunity to read it.
Just finished this amazing book!! I recieved this gifted copy from one of my favorite authors in exchange for an honest review! I love all of Val Collins books but let me say this is my favorite to date! It was definitely an edge of the seat, have to know who done it, and why kind of book! I loved Aoifes determination in not only her personal life but in finding out exactly what happened to Oran. This is a great fast paced thriller that keeps you guessing until the end! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Characters: I really enjoyed the lead character, Aoife. She was strong, likable, courageous, and self confident. The supporting characters were well written and a good foil for Aoife. I do wish we could have learned more about Colin, Aoife’s fiancée, but since this is the 4th book in the series, maybe the first three have more about his story.
Plot: I thought the plot was quite clever. The author kept you guessing through the book as to who could possibly be the killer, even though, she truly leads you to that person. I kept flip flopping as to who the guilty party could be, and was a bit surprised at the ending. I also enjoyed the sub plot, and was quite satisfied with how the author ended that situation.
Writing Style: The author’s writing style was easy and enjoyable to read. She was smart with the red herrings, and I liked the style of writing that let the reader feel like they were really solving it along with Aoife.
My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions expressed are my own.
After Oran falls to his death from a cliff, a part time journalist, Aoife is hired to investigate what really happened. What starts as a favour with a little joy ride takes a dark turn. Where do I start from; I love the way Aoife mind works, the different perspective she envisions when interviewing characters. It was like I was beside Aoife on her journey with both the case and her problems at work. The characters were beautifully and wonderfully created for a purpose in the novel no matter how little that purpose is. The behavior and attitude for each character was just well portrayed. I loved Louisa's character so much. After Aoife, she's my second. I don't really pay attention to humor in murder mystery but I loved the use of humor in this novel. I loved this book so much. It deserves the 5 stars rating I gave it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received an ARC and really enjoyed the book. It’s a quick read with short chapters. I enjoyed the mystery and has a guess what happened but never felt like I actually figured it out. The only downside to the book is that there are a lot of characters to keep track of and I was honestly confused at the end about who was who
Where Loyalties Lie is a thriller novel that centers on a freelance journalist named Aoife Walsh who is hired to investigate the death of a young man named Oran who fell off a cliff. Although his family and the people who were with him at the time of his death all say it was an accident, one woman claims she saw his best friend Ben Weston pushed him off and is determined that justice be served for Oran's murder. I really enjoyed the novel. I was kept guessing up until the very last chapter, but it didn't feel like it was dragging at all either. The chapters are all relatively short, many only 2-3 pages, which makes it a very fast paced read. There are really only two complaints that I have about the book. The first is that as Aoife is investigating Oran's death, she interviews many of his friends who all share their own stories of how they know him and Ben, how they met, etc. There are a lot of characters and it was a bit difficult to keep track of the relationships between them all. There is also a side plot where Aoife is working a part-time job with a boss that has a history of sexually harassing the young women that work there, including Aoife. This plot was a heavy focus for most of the beginning half of the novel, then wasn't mentioned much again until the very end of the book, and it didn't flow together much in my opinion. Note: I was given an advance copy of this book to read and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Where Loyalties Lie is a murder thriller with an investigative reporter by Val Collins. Released 1st March 2022, it's 270 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.
This is a very fast paced, action driven thriller featuring a reporter protagonist and a heap of unreliable witnesses. Despite being the fourth book in the series, it works quite well as a standalone, and readers coming into the series with this book won't have any troubles keeping up with the plot or characters. I liked that Aoife is tenacious and intelligent, and her interplay with the other characters is well written and nuanced.
Four stars. The ending is definitely a page-turner, and I found the climax, denouement, and resolution satisfying and well done. This is one for fans of procedural/investigative thrillers.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
When Oran falls to his death from the Cliffs of Moher, even though his friends believe it was an accident, a stranger accuses Ben Weston of murder. Ben’s wealthy family tries hard to clear his name.
Weston family hires a part time freelance reporter, Aoife Walsh to help prove their son’s innocence. Aoife investigates but the stories aren’t lining up perfectly. But who is lying? And is she safe herself?
Where Loyalties Lie is Series. All four books are standalone thrillers and can be read in any order.
My Review: This was my first Aoife Walsh book but still it worked perfectly as a standalone thriller. The plot starts with a bang without dilly-dallying. The development of the characters was surprisingly engaging more than the plot itself. There are no shocking twists, rather small consistent surprises and the mystery is revealed layer by layer. The main character Aoife Walsh was magnetic and i would like to read more about her.
There are rare cases where I'm interested in the side story equally to the main storyline and this book gives you that. The writing style of the author keeps you intrigued.
I will read other Aoife Walsh books without a doubt.
Thank you to @ehpmarketing for sending me a copy of Where Loyalties Lie!
I really enjoyed this fourth installment in Val Collins Aoife Walsh thriller series! Each book can be read as a standalone, so it’s easy to jump in wherever you can.
Aoife (pronounced ee-fuh) Walsh is a freelance journalist. Her best friend, Orla, works for a law firm. They are currently representing a client that is being accused of pushing his friend over a cliff. Ben swears Oran fell, and the two girls along with them swear the same. The witness, a woman named Nancy, says otherwise.
Determined to find the truth, Aoife is hired by Ben’s mother, Louisa, to find out more about Nancy and why she is claiming to have witnessed such a thing. Because Ben couldn’t have done it; he and Oran were like brothers. Will Aoife reveal the truth, or will she die trying?
I really enjoyed this story! The chapters were short and enticing, and I loved seeing where Aoife took this story. There is a small side plot line regarding her work and personal life, but most of the story involves her trying to uncover the facts about Oran’s death. The twists involved were ones I didn’t see coming, and I loved that! I can’t wait to see what she does next!
Hello! I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I am very happy that I did. The mystery of Oran’s death kept opening more and more doors to other mysteries. The ending was shocking! My mouth fell open at what happened. I couldn’t believe it. Aoife did an excellent job with her investigative journalist skills to reveal the truths.
I must say Aoife was driving me crazy with her part-time job situation. I understand her concerns about money and being a single parent but sexual harassment is not cool. Her boss was a nasty pervert. I am glad she finally stood up for herself but it was only when he accused her of theft and fired her. If that had not happened, would she continued to deal with her boss’s behavior?
Then when her fiancé offered to help her, she said no. Relationships are supposed to be couples working together and supporting each other through everything. So she was frustrating me with that too. I get financial independence but putting yourself through sexual harassment should make you reevaluate the current situation and letting your partner help you until you find something more safe. Towards the end, Aoife came to her senses on both of those situations. Thank goodness.
Recommendation for those who love mystery!

When it seems unclear if Oran was murdered or died as a result of an accident, his best friend is the one that suspicion falls on. Having done some sleuthing previously, and successfully helped clear the name of a family member once also wrongly accused, it's small wonder that the Westons turn to Aoife Walsh to help clear Ben's name.
Collins' Walsh is dogged and implacable. She leaves no stone unturned and nothing to chance - even putting herself in harm's way - to clear Ben's name.
Collins has long been a favourite. She writes characters with grit and determination who quickly become people you care about. While this is Book Four in the series, all four books read extremely well as standalones. But the skill of this author is that she will draw you in till you've read them all.
[I was fortunate to receive a copy of this book from the author via Booksirens, with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed herein are given freely and are entirely my own. ]
Review: Another great read in the Aoife Walsh series!! If you have not read these books, and are a thriller lover, I recommend picking them up now! She is about to release the 5th book at the end of the month. I thought I figured out who the killer was about halfway through the book, but NOPE!! The twist at the end, I did not see that coming!! Can be read as a standalone or in the order of release. I recommend reading in the order of release, but I didn’t, and was still able to keep up!

Overall 4.5* This is the fourth book in this series and they are improving with each one in my opinion. The main character Aoife is an investigative journalist however as that doesn't pay the bills, she takes up employment elsewhere as she is also a single mum. In this book she is recruited by her lawyer friend regarding an incident where a young man fell over the cliffs at Moher. But did he fall or was he pushed. And the more that Aoife digs into the story, the more that rises to the surface - not all wanted either. Like most in this series, this is not a pick up/put down book as there are quite a few characters in the book and so it is best read in a short time. It can be read as a standalone too. I enjoyed the description of the cliffs and felt that I was there with them which definitely adds to enjoyment of the story.
I enjoyed this suspenseful story. It is a story that has twists and turns that left me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. I enjoyed being pulled into the story by the characters. They are connectable and really brought the story to life on each page. They kept the story engaging and entertaining to read. They had great growth throughout the story where the story was easy to read. This is a newer author for me which I enjoyed their writing style and attention to details. This is a well written story that you don't want to miss. A story full of action and hard to put down. I really enjoyed this story and what the characters brought to the story. I highly recommend this book.
