With sparks flying, the delinquents’ brawl begins! It’s a one-on-one showdown between Bofurin vs Shishitoren, and only the strongest team will come out on top.
The devotees of strength, Shishitoren, is here to raid their turf!! Haruka Sakura moves to a new town in hopes of becoming the top of the infamous delinquent school, Furin High. But when he finds out that the delinquents have rebranded into a team unified by their duty to protect the town, he joins them down their path as a member of their team. Unfortunately, his start is a rocky one when he finds himself in a conflict with the rival team, Shishitoren, who owns the turf right next to theirs. The Furin leader, Umemiya, gets dragged into their bought and a Bofurin versus Shishitoren one-on-one tournament begins, with their teams on the line!
This is weirdly a comfort read/watch for me. Sakura's changing dynamic with everyone is so cute, and seeing some hints to the backstories for the other members of Bofurin is interesting too.
Oh, Suo's fight will always make me kick my feet. You're such a delicious gremlin. His little, by-the-way comments always rilling everyone up, especially Sakura.
Umemiya is such a cool and sweet leader. "Lets take you into adulthood with me" is a dangerous phrase Suo san. The smiley guy is always the scary one. So as Suo said to become an adult we need empathy.. we cant have empathy if we can’t imagine ourseleves in someone else’s shoes.. damn so poetic but correct!! He just summed that up so beautifully in so little time especially in that kind of messed up environment and he's so little too. I am really looking forward to Suo's backstory. I do believe he is kind.

Well, i still dislike the setting, if i‘m honest. The overall situation with the gangs is still not something i can take seriously, since there is still no real explanation as to why they exist and why they feel the need to beat each other up. Bit apart from that, i simply love the humor and adore the characters, so i had fun with this volume.
One thing that stood out to me, was that in the scene where Suo mocks his opponent, his friends notice how that is not a „nice“ side of him. I found that quite unusual, since most of the times, i would say that very confident characters who lock down on their opponents are mostly viewed as overly strong and it‘s not something they get criticized for. The fact that Suo was not only viewed as dangerous but also as someone who has a fowl character trait despite him smiling a lot and being easy going, made me reflect a bit. I liked that detail very much. :)
The way these boys are so serious about the fights but at the same time they’re so unserious??? 😭💖 I can never have enough of them (and Sakura yelling and blushing at everything is just too cute dO IT MORE BABY BOI)
Brutal.
Loved the anime and loving this one as well. Well technically this came first and I’m glad I bought this one. Glad that the anime sticked with the manga.
OH I KNEW HAJIME HAD THE FACE OF A MEGANE! (Delusion.) Never mind. Two volumes in, everyone is so UNSERIOUS and yet, I'm weirdly emotionally invested already.
In saving a junior high student, a fellow first year and Sakura have provoked a neighboring gang, the Shishitoren, whose general and several members challenge a select group of Bofurin to a one-on-one style tournament to settle the score. The matches include Sakura and Bofurin’s general, Umemiya. At first meeting, Umemiya doesn’t seem like the type of person to be leading the school, and Sakura is not at all impressed by his bubbly nature and proclivity for vegetable gardening. Within the Shishitoren turf is their headquarters and the site of their fights. It's an abandoned theater with plenty of good views of the fights happening on the the stage for everyone to see all of the action.
I found it a little bothersome that both of the generals for Bofurin and Shishitoren have the same childlike attitude until it’s time to get serious. They’re a little too similar. But Nii-san could be doing this to make them easier as foils for one another, so we'll have to wait and see if there's something more that comes of their similarities later. Some of the bad guys in Shishitoren are underdeveloped and more like caricatures of the typical Japanese "delinquent" stereotype, so I wish there was more done to develop them and make them less two-dimensional. This volume had some good pacing and didn’t try to cram all the fights in at once. I appreciate that the two big fights will be broken into another volume other than this one.
“Okay! Then it’s decided! In the name of our teams…let’s all have the time of our lives and duke it out!”
We’re barely two volumes into this series and we already got ourselves a tournament arc! …But can you really call taking turns fighting each other, with the winner getting less beat up(?) a tournament? Not really, but I don’t care because this is clearly an excuse to show off the personalities and fighting styles of each of the Furin boys. And it does not disappoint.
The Shishitoren team is also a great first antagonist. I’m all for crazy guys full of bloodlust going all out just because they want a good fight (and maybe something more…).
