A very well thought out fantasy novel. Written well away from the normal run of the mill fantasy books that abound from average authors. Myself and others, I am sure, will be ever anxious for the next tale that will take us deep into things unthought of.

It's been a long time since I was so mesmerized by a book I finished it within 3 - 4 hours (A night). I started around 10 pm reading thinking I would read a few chapters and suddenly I was finished with the book and it was after midnight. I've always loved fantasy stories that don't quite follow the same pattern as all the classic fantasy novels or others I've read. Witterkin caught my attention immediately and I was enthralled. Many times when reading a story I can see where it's going, or predict ending. This did not happen with Witterkin. Not only did I have a completely different picture in my imagination of what the Witterkin was, but when I finally caught a glimpse, it was a surprise, plus the later story didn't follow a normal fantasy plot and had a refreshing ending that left me with more thoughts and questions. Thank you W.K. Greyling for this amazing fantasy romp!

Welcome to the world of the Witterkin, a place where magic exists, and wonder grows in the world through a plant-like species with the titular name. The story features Nya, a lonely young lady who’s always felt different, who’s always felt like she didn’t belong in her small town, and Yaro, the town’s master Windsinger who acts as the community’s stonemason for windstones which mark the graves of the dead and allow their voices to continue on with the wind that blows through them. With the Witterkin, Nya finds comfort. Having lost her mother and father, she can only sort of talk to Yaro, but things have been strained for them since the accident that took her mother years before. When the Witterkin, the green, plant hivemind begins to turn red, and the land around them begins to die, it’s up to Nya to cross the border between her world and another realm, a place she never even knew existed! With only Yaro’s windsong in the air, and a fascinating cast of monsters and fae, Nya must traverse this new realm and save Yaro so that he can save the Witterkin!

With an atypical female protagonist, fresh looks on the concept of Fae and monsters, and a wholly (as far as I can tell) new “other realm” that doesn’t rely on classic tropes nor known mythologies, W. K. Greyling has created a standalone story that both engages and entertains the reader and keeps them coming back for more. The narrative talents of Kat Bohn are exquisite, with differing characters effectively brought to life in a way few single narrators can accomplish, the story is lively, enjoyable, and very quick to listen to. The novel is a new take on a hero’s (heroine’s) journey with trope-smashing characters, settings, and lore that relies on nothing except the characters themselves and the sheer wonder that Greyling weaves throughout the story. The world-building is fantastic, the characters are 3-dimensional and interesting, and the story itself will have you wanting more. I highly recommend this audiobook and look forward to further offerings from this author!

I love fantasy novels that bring me to a place where I ache deeply for good to happen to the main characters. My goodness, I loved Naya and Yaro in this stirring fantasy. Though we are introduced to them as merely friends, it is evident that there is something between them and something unknown keeping them apart. It is very interesting discovering the secrets in this book, as the story unfolds in a beautiful way with a delightful pace.

In this book, there is something utterly touching the way both Naya and Yaro strive to keep each other safe. It reminded me of the enjoyable dynamics between Edward Cullen and Bella in the Twilight series. There are other pleasurable characters, and my favorite is Nenad. I might vote Nenad as one of the top ten characters I've adored in any book, he is too adorable. This truly was a fun book with an awesome characters and an awesome ending. The satisfying ending made me laugh and also cry tears of joy.

Kat Bohn's narration was just as awesome as the story. I loved the way she brought to life the many characters, it was part of what made this book a solid five stars.

Interesting story line. It is about a young girl who feels the whole village is "against" her. The village is located close to a mountain which surrounded by a plant called witterkin. When her father dies and divides his estate her brother suddenly decides he wants what would appear the least favorable portion of the estate. She goes to see why and finds he is killing the witterkin which is supposed to be protected. This draws her across a boundary between worlds where she finds herself in constant danger and discovers things about herself she was unaware of.

The story is well written and does not give away the conclusion during the reading.

I listened to the audiobook and the narration was well done. The narrator put a lot of feeling into the presentation and the emotion was spot on.

I loved this book and did not want it to end. It follows protagonist Nya, into another world where she hopes to find her soulmate, and windsinger, Yaro. After her father died and her brother was murdered, Nya finds the origins of the Witterkin and must find Yaro and a way home. Can Nya get past Yaromirs past that haunted her and prevented her from pursuing him after a horrible accident. Keep an eye out for the quirky, somehow loveable Nenad.

Its a wonderful journey and I shall certainly read more of this authors imaginitive work.

4.5 stars. I read a lot of fantasy, but I never expected to enjoy a book about magical plants. The story starts benignly, then goes off the deep end before a nice recovery. Excellent character development. Good choice for a change of pace fantasy novels.

Amazing Fantasy Story

Let me start by saying that Witterkin is a fantastic story. I found all of the characters to be very well written as well as likable. As far as the story is concerned W.K. Greyling has created quite the addictive storyline. Once you start you will not want to stop till you are finished. I also found the narration by Kay Bohn really well done. All in all I would recommend this story to anyone who likes a good fantasy story.

Witterkin was an okay book, but it felt like the author couldn't tell what kind of book it was supposed to be. At times, it appeared to be an adult fantasy romance, sometimes it read like a YA fantasy novel, and at other times it read like a paranormal thriller. I wish the author could have decided what kind of a story it was supposed to be an fully developed the tale in that genre.

I highly recommend this book! It is original in its way as a fantasy book, yet stays strong to what you desire from the fantasy genre. when you think the story must be over, it gives you more, making you realize that this story is much more than the world beyond, and the witterkin.

The Witterkin by W. K. Greyling

Unattractive Nya feels the world is against her. She has only one friend, a wise woman who is as interested in plants and potions as she is. And then there’s Yaro, another oddball who creates “windsingers”, rocks that sound like the voices of the dead. Nya has feelings for him but is unsure if he feels the same.

Even Nya’s own brother has little time for her. So, it’s rather surprising that after her father’s death, her brother gives her the lion’s share, and accepts the least favourable piece of land for himself. It borders the land occupied by the Witterkin: plants that collect and record information and should be left alone.

When her brother disappears, Nya’s word is turned upside down. Yaro and she are plunged into another world where they must appease the Witterkin or the world as they know it will never be the same again.

An interesting, original storyline with a lovely, unexpected ending.

The author kindly gave me an Audible of this book, but I also got the Kindle edition because I like to read along sometimes when I'm listening. This is an epic story, not at all rote or rehashed, and I really liked that. You have the story arc of the heroine as you will in a fantasy, but the plot itself is different from the norm and a bit eerie. I enjoyed that there was a mild but consistent love story underneath, and that there were lessons about ecology and greed that are so appropriate to the genre. I was truly pulled in by the audio narration, and the author's writing style is memorable. I will definitely read more by this author and hope there is more from this world.

I received a free audiobook code in exchange for a review.

I’d wanted to read/listen to this book for a while. When the author received more US codes, she messaged me and here we are now.

Overall, this was an awesome story. I didn’t come across any big-picture problems, thankfully. I did find small mistakes like redundancy; for example, “She looked around HER” or “She lowered herself DOWN.” And, while I know “that that” and “had had” are grammatically correct, I can’t stand them. Why? Because the sentences can always be rephrased. There was also the overuse of adverbs, which I’m not a fan of either because, most of the time, a stronger verb can be used.

This type of story delves into the author’s imagination and turns full force into a rollercoaster of twists and turns that leave the reader wanting more. I forgot the foot-tall guy's name but I enjoyed his dialogue and personality. In the end, I loved the story!

Other than that, the narrator did a great job. I loved her accents, which helped the story come to life. I noticed that when she’d say “Iron,” it sounded more like “I-rin.” That could be from her natural accent, but it stood out to me.

The only question I was left wondering was why Naya didn’t tell the truth about her injuries after her brother’s death. I get, sort of, not wanting to tell the “higher-ups” about the land of Witterkin, but...

Space for a Journey

Nya loves learning about herbs and has customers who seek to acquire particulars she keeps inventory of. Sundyr is the town she lives in, it is known for its mystical population of Witterkin—light beings who live in a fence guarded partitioned area. They emit a coursing sound through the air, and are dangerous to people. One day the sound changed, and subsequently there was evidence of offense against the Witterkin’s state. Nya and Yaromir are motioned through various challenging sequences before they realize a mend to the problem.

The narration is ok I believe it fits the storyline.

This is a strange type of story and it starts out very slowly. The MC is a young lady who's looks put off the people in here town. She is treated poorly and referred to as a Witch because she makes herbal remedies.
I usually truely enjoy this authors work, but this one left me wondering where the works are heading.

Inventive and charming dual-world fantasy.

A nicely written tale, with unique characters and environments and an engaging storyline. My only criticism is that some details of the plot are perhaps a little light, but that's more than compensated for by the easy flow and rich descriptions, not to mention Nenad's somewhat self-centred humour.

This was a slow story for me, but I have learned over time that often such stories hold deep secrets and pearls of wisdom. Overall, I did come away with thoughts to ponder, and I look forward to reading more from this author.
