Wait Until Morning is an absorbing journey into the lives of three women faced with the absences of their men during WWII. Anna Aubrey’s desire to help with the war effort grates against the wishes of her cousin Freddie, the head of the family. She has reached a point where she has had enough of his interference in her life, especially when he rejects Corporal Daniel Blair’s request to marry her the night he leaves for Europe as a field medic. Anna has no choice but to leave Alexandria for her sister’s home in the peaceful town of Harpers Ferry. Upon her arrival, she finds her sister’s health in decline, and ends up in a tug-of-war with the local doctor whose skills are antiquated, while struggling with whether she has lost or won the man she loves…and if he will return.
Rita Gerlach lives with her husband in a historical town nestled along the Catoctin Mountains, amid Civil War battlefields and Revolutionary War outposts in central Maryland.
"Inspirational romantic fiction is one way people can escape the cares of life and be transported back to a time of raw courage and ideal love," she says. "The goal of my writing is to give readers a respite, and inspire them to live fully and gratefully."
So very good! Each of her stories keep getting better and better! This is my favorite story by her. Each of these women has captured my heart with their life's journeys through an era that most of us find fascinating but at the same time heartbreaking. I simply couldn't put this book down it was so good! Lots of interesting historical details in this awesome book. I love how the author has included her historical notes at the end. I highly recommend! My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
The price of war is long lasting, something that unfortunately is not new to anyone. Our heroine has experienced this in the loss of a loved one. Will this loss happen again? For Anna, an opportunity to learn patience clinging to the hope that comes from loving someone. Her positive attitude permeates everything she does.
A lovely story of what life was like during the Second World War, I appreciated the wonderful details about how this family worked to survive the shortages of many of the items they took for granted. What a fabulous reminder of the many ways to endure when your way of life must change.
An ARC of this novel was received through Dusk to Dawn Books. These comments and impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
Set in 1944 Alexandria, Virginia and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia during WWII; Wait Until Morning takes the reader into the characters lives as they face many challenges and struggles, heartaches and joys, uncertainties, grief, learning to stretch rations to meet basic needs, surprises, love and faith.
I like the way Avella and her two daughters, Anna and Meredith and granddaughter, Georgie, encourage and help each other during such difficult times. Young Georgie is precious and soon captured my heart. Mrs. Abernathy and Uncle Stephen are two favorite characters too. I really like Freddie’s valet, Mr. Palmer, and the way he secretly cares for and watches out for both Anna and her mother in ways that would certainly cost him his job if Freddie learned of it. I like the way Anna meets Corporal Daniel Blair and his dog, Champ. She was literately swept off her feet. I love the surprises at the end of the story!
I enjoyed the authors notes at the end of the book; it contains a wealth of historical information and other interesting information. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Wait Until Morning! Once again, Rita Gerlach takes readers on a historical journey with strong and courageous characters. Weaving well researched historical elements within the storyline. She is one of my favorite Christian historical fiction authors. A heartwarming story.
~As a Beta reader I received a PDF/ARC copy of this book from the author/publisher (no monetary gain were exchanged), I also purchased a copy of the book, this is my honest review~
'Wait Until Morning' totally ensnared me from the onset—wrapping its tentacles around my heart and not letting go—as I became wholly invested in the lives of these women awaiting their men's return during WWII. Courageous women, helping in any capacity they were able...from working at the Red Cross to even driving taxi cabs. Yes, that one surprised me as well!
I've said it before and will continue to do so as long as Ms. Gerlach keeps writing novels—she is absolutely unsurpassable in descriptive imagery. As I followed Anna's journey from Alexandria, VA, I was truly there amongst the grape hyacinth mingled with the perfume of trimmed boxwoods and reveled in the picturesque beauty surrounding the Potomac River in Harper's Ferry.
The author's witty, humorous voice was prevalent throughout and I especially enjoyed this quote as I remember my mother cooking Spam during the lean times. "There’s a lot you can do with a can of Spam. Fry it. Grind it. Grill it. Eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It isn’t called ‘the miracle’ meat for nothing.” That miracle meat was, well...I'll let you try it! (chuckle)
With unique, lovable characters who willingly helped one another during the trying hardships of war and a plot so intriguing—I literally put this book down only out of necessity (sleep for example-lol), 'Wait Until Morning' is a romantic, exceptionally well-researched novel I highly recommend!!
“If it is truly love, and he is the one, there’s nothing in this world to end it. It will go on forever.”
I so enjoyed reading Wait Until Morning. Mrs. Gerlach creates relatable characters that I would love to meet in real life. There’s romance, yes, but there’s a great deal more facing trials with grace and strength, even when things look impossible. I also really love all the tiny, tiny details Mrs. Gerlach weaves throughout her story that pull the reader into the story with all the senses on alert. Wait Until Morning is a satisfying read.
Ms Gerlach captured not only the time of WWII, she captured it's heart at home. Yes many go to the war, but she stayed home and brought that time home... the suffering , the realities of waiting. If just for one word from over there. Great read. Don't miss it
Well written book capturing the hearts of those left home waiting for loved ones during WWII. Intriguing plots and sub-plots. Breathless moments of what will happened next. Nice job!
