El deseo del highlander

Rate this book
He’s a fierce Highland warrior. She’s a struggling history student. Can they transcend the bounds of time to claim the love they desire?

Scotland, 1310. Fiercely protective Highlander Angus Mackenzie fought for Scotland’s independence. Now, unable to pay his clan’s tribute, he has agreed to give up his own freedom by marrying the powerful and predatory Euphemia of Ross.

Scotland, 2021. Historian Rogene Wakely has felt responsible for her younger brother since their parents died. But when the teen disappears in Eilean Donan Castle, her search leads to a rune-covered rock that sends her plummeting through time. Waking up to a gorgeous Scot who makes unsavory assumptions, Rogene slaps the man and runs for her life to the local church.

Discovering that the village priest is ill, Angus asks the beautiful stranger’s forgiveness and implores her to write his marriage contract. One forbidden kiss with Rogene makes his impending wedding feel like a death sentence. But rejecting Euphemia would put Angus’s clan—and Rogene—in grave danger. Rogene can’t help being drawn to the rugged Scot, but she won’t interfere with his engagement, which will result in an important heir. But when Euphemia sees Angus’s longing for the dark-haired beauty, neither can escape her rage.

Will forbidden lovers risk their lives and Scotland’s future by choosing desire over duty?

THIS IS THE BEST YET!!!! Highlander's Desire by Mariah Stone is book 5 in the Called by a Highlander series and this series is truly amazing. Though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. What I especially liked about this book was the heroine is a history student trying to prove her deceased mother hypothesis regarding Robert the Bruce. I just love leaning history and a really good romance… what a combo. I found Mariah’s time traveling writing to be easy to read, her story original and just a joy to read. I think this is her best writing yet. I am so looking forward to the next in this series. This story has a sister and brother who are orphaned, feeling lonely, a need to take care and protect, an unwanted marriage, evil, revenge, jealousy, duty to clan and family, a tyrant of a father, taking other’s punishments, a love between brothers and sister, heartbreak (get the tissues out) and love. I highly recommend this book and the rest of this series.

***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.

I love reading time travel historical romances, especially when it's Mariah Stone who writes them!! I thoroughly enjoyed Rogene and Angus' story, it's filled with exciting twists and turns that will keep you not wanting to put the book down!!

Rogene is from 2021 and has read the history books so when she finds herself in 1310 Scotland, she knows she cannot change history by doing something to alter it....like falling in love with Angus who is supposed to marry another woman. Angus has always done everything to keep his family and clan safe and if that means marrying an evil woman, then so be it! When he meets Rogene, though, all his plans go out the window except she tells him that he must adhere to his plans lest history be altered. Danger surrounds them as they try to figure out what to do. When hearts are involved, decisions are not easy to make!

*Spoilers*

I absolutely adored this story. I was so mad when it ended. I need more from these characters! Its not your typical highlander story and it has slight similarities to outlander like the time traveling. I loved how Rogene still remained feministic even though she was in the 14th century. Like standing up for that woman in the village who was gonna get beaten by her husband. Also even though she loved Angus she took none of his masculinity crap and put him in his place. I want to know where the story is gonna go for Rogene's brother David since he went with her through time. I hope the author writes more from this world I would definitely read it.

If you've been following along with Mariah Stone's "Called by a Highlander" series, then you'll know 'Highlander's Desire' if book five and the series just keeps getting better and better with each book she releases. This is a time-traveler story that kept my heart pounding not only for the intrigue of the plot but the chemistry between the hero and heroine. This is a fast-paced, action-packed romance adventure that has great, well-developed characters and a storyline that kept me glued to the pages to find out what would happen next and how things would play out. This is a wonderful and enjoyable read that I'm happy to recommend.

What could be more exciting to a student of history, than travelling to the past and finding proof for her thesis? But the author doesn’t make it easy for her, causing her multiple difficulties she has to overcome. Having had no one to rely on, the heroine’s biggest fear is having to rely on someone, of giving up control. The hero too has this issue. He’s always been there for everyone, sacrificed for family, but you’d be surprised what you can do for love.

Great addition to this wonderful series. Rogene and Angus are a delightful couple who struggle to overcome outside influences and commitments in their journey to love. The ending was certainly unexpected for me and I am looking forward to finding out the consequences of David’s actions in future books. This book is full of suspense and danger and I found it hard to put it down. Don’t miss this one. I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Omg!! Wow!! This book was great. I loved how the author put together the story. It flowed BEAUTIFULLY. Angus and Rogene are great but together. It had its downs at certain points and have you as the reader worry about the HEA. I couldn’t put this book down, read it in one sitting. I highly recommend!

A fair read but too much happened that was not realistic or be!ievable. Story started off well but the longer it went the worst it was. I wanted to like this book but it just wasn't there for me.

Rogene, a modern historian, gets transported to the SCotland of 1310. She meets Angus, a man who has always protected his family. They fall in love and want to be together, but a wicked lady tries to keep Angus for herself. Excellent time travel book in a series.

Another engaging time travel story. I am always amazed how elements from the present could be woven into history and what the effects could be. Rogene and Angus meet during the time of Scottish independence involving The Bruce and his link to the Mackenzie and Ross clans. I really enjoyed both of these characters and all the suspicions and baggage they bring. I must say, Euphemia while being not really likeable did bring a different twist to the story. There was suspense right to the end where many of the loose details were explained.

I just can’t say how much I came to HATE this book!

I’ll WARN you now ⚠️ there will be spoilers ⚠️

I almost don’t know where to start.
Hated the TSTL heroine. Wasn’t a fan of the H but hated her.
Both the MC’s and the plot were TSTL in my opinion.

Woooooooooo. Trying to calm down. Some times a book almost leaves ya wanting to punch something . A book that leaves ya wanting gnome gloves and a bag to punch 🥊,not good.

Ok, you have this woman/girl who is ( shortsighted, immature, untrusting and honestly just not the sharpest tool in the drawer). She finds some supposed Druid rock which some misguided “Fae.” woman uses to send her back in time. A time which she is startlingly and sickeningly unprepared for even though she’s supposedly working on a doctoral thesis of medieval Scottish history. She does understand that it’s no5 all rainbows and butterflies and unicorn farts. How ,how on earth is this stupid stupid B getting a doctorate from Oxford of all places and she doesn’t know women are men’s property ( the still are in some places in the world) and can be treated as their families and husbands like ?
That it was rough and violent and unbelievably unfair and bloody and nasty ?
She and her sainted mother both were supposedly writing about Robert the Bruce, how was she this dumb?
gods, she stumbles for one inept stupid turn to the next. The woman Angus feels forced to marry comes off as evil at first sight and yet everyone is incredibly lax and dumb around her.
Rogene is definitely one of those h’s that isn’t a tenth as smart as she thinks she is.
And WTH kinda name is Rogene ?
Ugh!
Anyway,,she’s falling for Angus but thinks she can’t have him because history says he’s having a child that will be important with the OW. Dear gods,I can’t believe I’ve found two awful books with this in their plot in one week. F.
At least Angus believed in love and didn’t force Ro into marrying him, then after deep in lust with her demanded they get an annulment so he could marry another for her dowry and then keep the h around to be hi# mistress. WTH ? Right ?
And kept up that BS til over 75% of the book.
Nah our Angus is dumb but not a d bag.
gods, at a lil over 1/2 thru the book or so Angus finally Ro in his bed, partly due to lust and partly to hoping it will piss off the evil B enough to drop him and walk away.
Seriously?
Well she does. Well, she says she will. And these morons knowing what and evil, evil B she is believe her. And when she knocks out Ro and kidnaps Angus no see it or seems to know til their long gone . And No, no sadly I kid you not!
Then Ro rounds up troops Angus chicken poo brother is too scared to get together and Ro and his sister abs another get some men and ride off to rescue him. Meanwhile ,the evil one is trying to rape him.
gods,I’m hating this. But wait it gets worse. They go and “rescue” Angus and lose half the men they took with them only for Ro to tell hi on the way back she must return and he needs to go back and have this important baby with Ms. Evil Mc Crazypants. Seriously? You go to all that trouble just to send him back ? WTF?!?!?!?!?!
Lil Miss Ro the stupid B goes back because her and mommies doctoral thesis is so important and writing a book on it. WTH!?!?! Also for modern pregnancy test I’m guessing. Book was for her equally stupid brothers education but it’s all just a waste because stupid brother gets sucked with her.
I’m boiling over with silent screams I wish I could release!!!!!!!
What . The. Hell was the point of this book ?
Mistrusting ppl and getting a doctoral degree is more important than common sense and love ?
I don’t know and I don’t ducking care. ( ducking was on purpose)
TLDL
STUPID Moronic characters and
This was a frustrating mess or a story. All of it but especially the whole kidnapping a man to try and rape and then “rescue” only to send him back. Seriously,What. The. Hell?
A dozen men are killed for a warped version of “catch and release” ?
Never coming back.

Will their encounter unbalance the future ...

Oh my I nearly missed the date, it is only by some weird hazard I saw I had a wrong release day marked on my book to read schedule.
Ouffff, I have today to read it.

Angus is such a honorable man, he uses his size and strength to be a shield for everyone he cared. He is always the one jumping in battle to he can protect his men. Why he steps in when he sees no other issue to save his clan.
Rogene has trust issues but also trouble to delegate. Yet it is not these character’s flaws that could cost her more than she expected.
How I do hate when characters act recklessly and Rogene did it just for some ill placed hope of fame. From there she opened the Pandora’s box and unlocked the ire of a dangerous woman.

While everything is in league against Euphenia and there are few to no moments to pity her. I still feel sorry for her. She is a dangerous woman but it looks like it was life and its hardships that changed her in this bitter woman, because when she drops her guard, she shows there is still a heart beating with hope of love and respect.

This book is a transition in the series as it is set among a different clan, I liked the different siblings and the ending leaves me curious about the fate awaiting them.

Ick ...

Where do I begin? Finishing this book became an exercise in perseverance. I’m not gonna lie, I hated it almost from the beginning. I had so many issues with this story. I hate that we’re supposed to be okay with the hero cheating on his fiancé and breaking promises repeatedly because Rogene is his “soul mate.” I’m not a fan of instalust, which most of these stories have, but it felt worse to me in this one. And Rogene’s distrust of people and need for control was taken to an extreme that felt contrived and not genuine. I was honestly rooting for Euphemia up until she committed sexual assault and then I was on no one’s side. I also didn’t appreciate the way the author handled the assault of the hero, it felt disrespectful to the seriousness of the issue, and male sexual assault is taken way too lightly in society anyway.

Let’s be real - the whole series is pretty silly, and I don’t read them because I expect them to be literary gems. But this one actually made me angry. I just hated the lack of morality in it overall. And don’t get me started on how the heroine’s grand plan on explaining her disappearance when she returned to the past was to leave her brother a suicide note and a last will and testament. The brother she supposedly loves. Disgusting.

Ok

I think the author has written so many books in this series that she started to slip with this one. Angus seemed to understand a fair amount of modern terms used by Rogene and didn’t question her speech nearly enough. He even used some terms himself like “thanks” “playdoh” and “handcuffs”. The h arrived in high heels and it was never mentioned. Another pet peeve was the excessive amount of profanity used by the main characters. Euphemia, the hardcore villain was just over the top and at times just plain vulgar. I found it hard to believe how weak willed her brother was especially being the Laird of their clan. Angus’s brother, also the clan Laird was a huge disappointment when he allowed Euphemia to order him around in his castle. I think the author needs to refer back to the first books in this series and make this one more believable and clean up the language.

Davvero. Fatevi un favore e passate oltre.
⭐ 1 stella, solo perché meno non è possibile.

Mariah Stone’s “Highlander’s Desire” is a thoroughly captivating read you won’t want to put down. I am always looking forward to her next book! With the stroke of the key she magically transport you to another time and place.

Angus Mackenzie the second son of the abusive Laird is a warrior, a huge man in both stature and honor and he spent a lifetime protecting his family and clan. Unable to pay tribute to William II, the Earl of Ross, Magnus finds himself obligated to marry William’s sister Euphemia. Euphemia is a wickedly evil woman who’s already had her first two husbands killed. Angus of course doesn’t want to marry her but feels he must.

Rogene a young, modern day historian from Oxford is at the castle with her brother David to attend her friends wedding. Where Jean and David were orphans because their parents died while they were children and she’s always felt responsible for David. While searching for David in the castle she meets Sineag and soon finds herself transported to the year 1310 and meets Angus the man she’s meant for. Being a historian this can be exciting because she knows who Angus is and she knows enough about history to blend in. Yet she’s fearful of doing anything that might change history though there’s definitely a bond and connection between them.

Mariah’s descriptions of past and present are so authentic and well described. Her imagery is so rich with detail it’s amazing! She seamlessly weaves the story into the history so that you don’t realize where one begins and the other ends. Her dialogue is always on point and she makes you feel her characters emotions and trepidation’s.

Mariah’s characters are always so beautifully created and well rounded. Angus is a wonderful hero and such a good man. It’s exciting to find Rogene as a historian with knowledge of time and place. But as a historian she worries about the butterfly effect and resist her pull to Angus. Angus is torn between loyalty to his family and his clan and his feelings for Rogene thereby he tries to resist the connection between them. The secondary characters are so well written and fit into the story perfectly.

I enjoyed the story immensely from start to finish. I’m fascinated by time travel and loved that the plot revolves around Rogene’s fear of changing the past. Making her a historian was a excellent idea. Mariah has a wonderful way of writing magical stories that envelop you as you read always leaving you wanting more. Simply put, she has a lovely way of transporting the reader to another time and place.

Thank you so much Mariah for this beautifully written, exciting love story.

This book will pull you in and you will not be able to put it down. So much going on with all the players. Angus Mackenzie is the second son of the Laird. All his life he has used his big, strong body to protect his family. First from his own father then against enemies that would ruin Scotland. He is a mountain of a man, and a warrior. His clan can not pay the high tribute to William II, the Earl of Ross. When William finds this out his sister, Euphemia Ross comes up with a way he can have the debt forgiven. He must marry her !! Euphemia is pretty, but also is sly, evil witch who has had her last two husbands killed. The last thing Angus wants is to marry her but what choice does he have. His older bother and Laird now is already married and his younger brother,Ragnull is a nomad. His sister Catriona is ready to join the church and become a nun. He has always put the Clan and family first and so once again he will suffer his own feeling and marry her. Many things are different in the year 1310.
Rogen Wakely is a historian who is trying to prove her mother's hypothesis and keep her legacy intact. Her parents were great teachers. They were both killed in an accident. Rogene has raised and taken care of her brother, David since. David has a learning disorder, Dyslexia and life has not been easy for him.
While at a wedding at the Castle Donan she loses David and can't find him. While trying to find him she meets the fairy Sineag. Where she falls thru time to Angus period.
These two don't trust each other. But the attraction and pull to the over is so strong. As they spend time with each other and help the other their lives will be changed forever. Love doesn't use reason but feelings.
How can two people from very different worlds, save both the past and keep the future from changing. Will love win over duty? What will the evil Euphemia do to them when her plans are ruined.
Can there be a happy ever after for anyone ??
I really loved this book till the end, it seemed rush to me, and left us with so many questions.
I would have like to have more of the issues explained.
Am hoping they will be in the next book. I don't like cliff hangers and not even sure you can call it that. I just like a neater finish.
That being said this is still a great book and story. I hope you give it a read; you will laugh and cry both.
I received and ARC and want to thank the author. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

Of all the hundreds of Highlander books out there – DO NOT BOTHER with this one. I DNF. Albeit, I listened to the audiobook – and good God, the narration of the FMC made it even worse. So between FMC character issues, shenanigans of story choices made, and ridiculously inept henchman, this book was abandoned.

The FMC Rogene from 2021 is monotone narrated by Emma Wilder. It is truly the most bizarre thing as Rogene is voiced as a robotic TV reporter. BUT, Wilder nails it when voicing Scottish side characters. It is so weird! And irritatingly the character of Rogene has overdone inner-monologue. There is truly more of her inner monologue than her talking with others. If I had to hear one more time about her Oxford accolades in Scottish history and her thesis, and her mistrust issues, etc., etc. I was gonna scream.

Now, for the dumb storyline choices. Rogene doesn’t overpower Scottish henchman, but she can easily evade them time and time again with ducking and side sweeping movements - even swinging a “big stick;” It is insulting to ancient Highlander warrior legends. And then there is the poor decision making of the lead role MMC and his kin. You don’t keep making the evil protagonist furious and then just go night night. If they’re staying in the same castle, are you really so stupid that you don’t think there will be some sort of retribution? Did you even lock the door?

And when there is an abduction situation, why would a skilled group of Highland Men send the lone female by herself into a lion’s den with no knowledge of who’s in there or where the psycho antagonist might be lurking… And the clearly shaking FMC literally has just a dagger. 🤦‍♀️The plot choices were getting so stupid, I just couldn’t take anymore.

And the biggest tragedy of all for audio listeners everywhere… Shane East narrated the MMC!! Shane East! Who has such a sexy Scottish accent. I couldn’t even drag through for him. That says a lot.

Life is too short to push myself to the 50% mark and realize it’s just getting worse. I’ll find another Highlander series to get my romantic adventures from

Rogene is a young woman who has not been happy in love but is the maid of honor attending her friend's wedding at Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland. Rogene was worried about her brother and his bid for a scholarship to play college football he was still living with their aunt sister to their mother, she and her husband had children of their own and never really cared for them but tolerated them all these years but now that she was working on a paper to prove that her mother's believeth that Robert Bruce had come to Eilean Donan in 1307 on his way to surrender but things did not turn out that way, but she has not found the proof and she is unwilling to accept help from anyone in the department. David and she have a fight and he walks away she thinks he went one way and she goes into an area restricted and she goes down some stairs to a dark and dank place that looked like a dungeon and she sees what looks like a pile of stones one with a handprint and she is fascinated she touches the handprint and she meets a female name Sineag she told that the rock opens a passway through time but of course Rogene does not believe but is told her destiny awaits her. Angus Mackenzie is second to his brother Laomann who is hardly the alpha in charge. Angus is to marry Euphemia Ross and her brother wants to take control of the Island they own but Angus is having none of it so they are trying to work at a contract between his family and theirs. Angus goes to the lower levels where he makes the fermented drink he hears something and goes further into to the back room and finds a beautiful young woman on the floor when she opens her eyes she is shocked to find the man standing over her dressed weirdly and when she's standing up again he calls her an unfortunate name she didn't appreciate and she slapped him and their story begins.
A fascinating storyline and the characters are very intriguing. Time travel from 2021 to 1310. Drama, romance, and suspense. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Mariah Stone seems to keep writing a better story than the last one! This one is outstanding! The characters are great, well developed and were introduced very well too! The story line is wonderful and you are grabbed right away and will not want to put it down until you finish it!!!
Angus Mackenzie has spent his life protecting his family and doing what is right for the clan. To save his clan a lot of grief to clan Ross over not having all of the money for their annual taxes Euphemia of Ross wants to marry him. Euphemia, is not a nice woman and has beheaded people and already has been married twice and both of those husbands are dead. Angus feels like he again has to do his duty to and for his clan even though he does not want to be with Euphemia, nor does he like her.
Rogene Wakely is a modern day history student working on her thesis for graduation which happens to be the time period that Angus lives and she is studying about Robert The Bruce. Her parents died in an accident when she was 12 and she and her brother were taken in and raised the rest of the way by their Aunt and Uncle. She has always watched over and helped her brother David as he has dyslexia and she is the one who has helped him through it all. While at the castle ruins of Eilean Donan for her friends wedding she discovers the room with the Rune Rock that allows people to travel through time. She winds up in 1310 Scotland and the first person she meets is Angus. They both feel an immediate attraction, she is trying to resist as she doesn't want to be responsible for changing history and Angus is having trouble with not doing what he has always done,,,forsaking his own feelings and desires for the clan or family.
This is a wonderful and enjoyable read!

This story is the fifth book in a wonderful series, wrote by Mariah Stone,I have read them all and they get better with each story. Highlanders Desire is set in the year 1310 at Delny Ross in Scotland, Angus MacKenzie is the brother of Laomann who is the Laird of the MacKenzie clan, but Laomann is a very weak man and Angus really leads his clan. Angus has always been very protective of his sister and younger brother Raghall, because their father was a cruel and hateful person. The Earl of Ross who was their overlord was at their castle to collect taxes. The Earls sister Euphemia was also there, and Angus agreed to marry Euphemia because of lack of money. In the year 2021 Rogene Wakeley was helping with her friend Karin wedding, Rogene was exploring castle and meet Sineag(fae) who sends her back to 1310. Where the first person she meets is Angus, this ebook is very exciting to read has drama ,romance kidnapping. I could not stop turning the pages,I felt involved in their lives and what they were going through. The family of Angus and Rogene played a fabulous addition to the story,I would recommend you read this book if you enjoy a excellent wrote book,I was given this ebook as a ARC for my honest opinion. If I could I'd give it a higher level than a five stars, can't wait to read the next book in the series.I can't tell you to much more about the plot, you must read to get the full excitement and anticipation of what's going to happen next. Thanks so much Mariah Stone for letting me review your book.
