The third five-star read in this wonderful series! This book was so intense I loved every sentence, every word. I had butterflies in my stomach all the way through to the HEA. I think Luke and Tristan had the most obstacles to overcome. But they were two more wonderful characters in this excellent series. I love Lydia Michaels for the wonderful men she writes about. Thank you so much!
This series deserves to be read! To say that it's highly recommended does not nearly begin to cover it.

The first 90% of the book was spent going over the past 7 years repeating what we've already come to know from previous books in the series. Because of that I was never able to fully connect with the character's story and actually believe their love was true. When we finally get to the last 10% and learn what happened after the event's that took place in the previous book Faking It, the story is rushed through until the end. 2 1/2 star read for me.

Tristan and Luke.. I've been waiting for their story ever since I read my first McCullough Mountain book..
I'm speechless right now. It was everything I wanted to read (and more). I had my concerns, I'll admit as I wasn't sure if Lydia could write an M/M romance like I was hoping.. (my expectations were extremely high). I'm ashamed I had doubts, these are Lydia's McCullough men and she did right by them. I feel that it's so much more than just an M/M romance. So much more.

I gave Luke the benefit of the doubt through this book (& series, I guess) because I felt his shame, for me it was so real I could almost taste it.
He hated who he was (and that he loved a man). That this series evokes such passionate opinions, in my opinion, shows what a truly gifted story-teller Lydia Michaels is.
I'm so thankful that JLC introduced us (me and my reading friends) to LM books.

Soo.. I knew this one wouldn't be my favorite. I knew enough about Luke and Tristans story to know it would suck.
I love this family and I do love these men.. but this is my least liked type of MM Romance. It's everything that hurts and I don't like...
Years and YEARS of having to be a secret and then random hate crime at the end to get us all "outed"... it's just... not romantic or sweet. And while it was well written, of course, it's not enjoyable and I wish I had passed on this one...
Also, WHY DIDNT LUKE ASK KELLY TO COME WITH.
Just so painful. Anyway, this series is still great. It's beautiful and I will continue to love it forever. The author is so talented and she REALLY makes you feel it all. There was just too much of the painful ones for me.

Forsaking Truth took almost seven years to tell. The fifth installment of the McCullough Mountain Series, this is the story of Luke McCullough and Tristan Hughes. The best friends who were reallypartners and lovers. The lovers who hid from all for fear of condemnation.
Luke is an angry man. He is angry for having lost his chance of becoming the athlete he lived for. He is angry that his siblings were seemingly getting the chances he thinks he should have had but never will. When he meets Tristan, he gets even angrier at having to face himself in the mirror, unwilling to accept who and what he really was.
Tristan had always known he was gay but his best friend and lover turned on him when they were caught by his father. It did not take long before he realized that he was losing everyone. As soon as he could, he got out and never looked back. Then he meets Luke and things fell into places he never thought they would. He meets the love of his life, but he could never publicly claim the man as his.
The story of Luke and Tristan was really an affair. It was a secret both men strove hard to keep from prying eyes, even from their families. Pretending to be someone whom they were not for almost seven years was painful to endure and it was really taking its toll on their relationship. What will it take to make both these men realize they were meant to be together?
I have to be honest, when this was offered up to me for review, I was just shaking my head. I knew author Lydia Michaels was a good writer, but to attempt to write an MM novel? Out of a character that had been brewing in the background for four series installments? I did not know what to expect.
Let me make something clear: I have never read the series before, never even heard of it. Is that blunt enough? Thing is, what scared me most was having to read an MF author write an MM book. That scared me but I should have known to trust this talented writer to not only succeed in her endeavor, but to guarantee that readers such as I would never once get lost within the mystery of the series. All I know is that this story encompasses what had already obviously been written about, but with this installment, all those questions left hanging are finally answered.
We have two angry men and the things they did to get to the HEA of their love affair was quite an eye opener. The author did not hold back with this one, in terms of character development. Both men were simply and obviously imperfect. Both of them had a lot of faults, there were times I just wanted to drop the book and scream at the two then realized that this was the point of the whole read. My getting agitated meant that these two men were getting to me.
My relationship with the two men would best be described as love-hate. I loved their commitment to each other and yet I hated the way they handled things. And their egos. Wow, if they could just drop their egos a bit they would have been really lovely, but these two are typical men with matching sky-high male egos! Not to belittle men's egos! Don't shoot me, its just that these two were so typically male.
Then again, it was because of that fact that made me love them both! They frustrated me no end, but I just loved them to bits. Faults and all.

I had my doubts going into this book. Both Luke and Tristan had aggravated me in previous books. Luke’s interaction (or lack of) with his family made me angry, and Tristan’s mixed signals where Sheilagh was concerned had me seething. But I should have known Lydia Michaels would have me loving these men by the time their story ended. She’s done that to me before. Always managing to pull me in, giving me a closer look at characters, and leaving them completely redeemed in my eyes. She is a master!
We’ve been given glimpses of Luke and Tristan’s story throughout the series. I loved that this story went back to the beginning of their relationship rather than just picking up where the last book left off. For one thing, I loved that return to the early years and being reminded of each of the siblings’ stories. I also loved that in going back to the beginning, I really understood Luke and Tristan better.
Theirs was not an easy road. While Tristan had dealt with the pain of being outted years ago, it was all new to Luke. Tristan had always known he was gay. But for Luke, it took him by surprise. McCullough men were manly men, not pansies. So he fought it by going through women at first. And later, whenever he felt the least bit threatened by exposure, he’d talk and act crude like he thought a hetero man should. I felt for his struggle and when he cried, finally realizing what he’d been missing, I cried right along with him. But it’s one thing to realize you’re gay and another to proclaim it to the world. Luke wanted to keep their relationship hidden, worried about his family’s and friends’ reaction. He decided how everyone would react without giving them the chance to decide for themselves. Tristan hung on to the hope that eventually Luke would come clean to his family and they’d be able to live openly. Yet year after year, they continued to hide their relationship. But no secrets stay buried forever. When theirs was exposed, Tristan hoped Luke could handle it.
What a beautiful and moving love story. This one particularly reminded me why I love the McCulloughs so much. Lydia Michaels takes issues many of us have never dealt with and writes them so exquisitely that readers understand and feel these struggles right along with the characters. In this particular story, she delves into the very heart of what it means to be gay, how relationships can change as a result of living authentically, and how disapproval from society can alter ones self esteem. Struggles many of us are oblivious to. While this may seem like heavy stuff that could be a depressing read, not so. Lydia Michaels writes this story with such a perfect blend of heartache, humor, and romance. And sexiness! Who would ever have thought that cutting tile could be sexy? The chemistry between Luke and Tristan is intense and the sex scenes, while steamy, also move the story and character development forward. I have loved every minute on McCullough Mountain. I can’t wait to return and see who’s story is next.

Although this is book 5 in the McCullough Mountain series, Forsaking Truth can be read as a stand-alone without any confusion. That said, as someone who has read it as a stand-alone, I plan to add the previous books in the series to my reading list as the McCulloughs are a rather entertaining and delightful family and I would like to read each of the siblings’ story. In this installment in the series, we are treated to Luke’s story and his adjustment to major life changes.
Destined to be a professional athlete, Luke suffered an injury during his junior year in college that rendered his career path and dream an impossibility. As such, it is no surprise that Luke is a sullen and withdrawn man, even with those closest to him – his family. This is what makes his reaction when meeting Tristan so surprising to him. Luke doesn’t understand the effect that Tristan has on him until he and Tristan are working together on his house and Tristan kisses him. Luke has never been attracted to a man and Tristan’s kiss freaks him out, not because he didn’t enjoy it, but rather that he did. Because of his painful history, Tristan is just as distraught over the kiss because Luke’s reaction leads Tristan to believe he misread the situation and made a terrible mistake because he enjoyed hanging out with Luke as friends. The tension that mounts as the two deal with their reactions to the kiss come to head and makes for one seriously hot sex scene when Luke admits to himself and Tristan that he enjoyed the kiss and wants more. Unfortunately, Center County is not a liberal area, so the two are forced to keep their relationship a secret, which works for Luke as he is still struggling to accept that he isn’t straight; but Tristan has accepted himself for who he is and as time passes the secrets wear on him, especially when Luke feels he has to “play it straight” to keep their secret. I liked that the author addressed the trials and tribulations that Luke and Tristan endure as their relationship develops and progresses over six years. Ms. Michaels lets the reader enjoy the highs and endure the lows without getting bogged down in the monotony of day-to-day activities that I’ve experienced with some books.
Forsaking Truth is a well-crafted romance between two men, one who accepted his sexuality as a teenager and one who had never realized that he may have been destined to love a man. The fact that Luke accepted some parts of his attraction to Tristan easily, while other parts were problematic for him is what made their story feel so real. The fact that the sex scenes were scorching was an added bonus. I enjoyed reading Luke and Tristan’s story and it is a definite re-read for me. I look forward to reading more of the books in the McCullough Mountain series.

Forsaking Truth made my heart ache and the tears run down my face. It was both beautifully written and heartbreaking. Forsaking Truth is an ugly look at the injustice and fear faced by those that find love outside the mainstream of societal norm. Even those that are in the relationship can face punishing regret and fear of being outed. Love is a private thing, yet a joy you want to share, something that not everyone will find. How heartbreaking to find love when it shames you and you need to hide it.
Forsaking Truth hits so close to home. My best friend in high school was unashamedly, flamingly out there. I loved him to pieces and still do. Years later we are still friends though now separated by the span of our country. I remember being there, holding him as he cried or recovered from being beaten up just for being who he is. Forsaking Truth brought back those days to mind.
Forsaking Truth shows love, whether between a man and woman or a man and a man, love is the core. It is not bound by gender or beliefs and comes when you do not expect it or look for it. In Luke's case it came with something he considered taboo and shameful. For Tristan and Luke it eventually brings regret and heartache.
Love, somehow, will find a way.
Forsaking Truth is not to be missed. Lydia Michaels once again pulls at my heart strings, wringing out emotions as I read. I have yet to read one of her books that doesn't make me smile and make me cry. A gifted story teller she brings her characters to life by digging your emotions out and exposing them for everyone to see.

This was my first Male/Male romance. I have never been interested in reading same sex romances, despite the fact that I am very liberal when it comes to same sex relationships. As a heterosexual female, I just didn’t think I would be able to identify with the characters. Boy was I wrong. I absolutely loved this book. It's my favorite out of the series so far.
Both Tristen and Luke characters intrigued me whenever they were mentioned in books two and four of this series (the only books I’ve read in this series so far). After reading book 4 I couldn’t resist giving their story a try and decided to take the plunge and bough the book. I was hooked on page 1. Lydia Micheals did it again. Each of her books goes beyond romance and sex. She always adds real life issues with each couple she writes about and realistic resolutions. I have no words to truly described how much I enjoyed this book and how deeply it touched me.

Both Tristen and Luke characters intrigued me whenever they were mentioned in books two and four of this series (the only books I’ve read in this series so far). After reading book 4 I couldn’t resist giving their story a try and decided to take the plunge and bough the book. I was hooked on page 1. Lydia Micheals did it again. Each of her books goes beyond romance and sex. She always adds real life issues with each couple she writes about and realistic resolutions. I have no words to truly described how much I enjoyed this book and how deeply it touched me.

5 plus stars. This is my first ever MM romance, and I am blown away. I loved the heroes, and I loved their story. The author, once again, did an amazing job. I'm not one to re-read a book, but this one I will.

Oh man, this book ripped my heart out way more than I was expecting. You have two men who feel immensely at odds with not only themselves, but also the way they feel for each other. Living in a place where their love isn't always accepted, and at times around people who make it even harder to live with. Be sure to go into this book knowing it's not sunshine and rainbows, and some heavy, heavy topics are an important part of the narrative. Always check your CW/TW.
Luke and Tristan's story was a loooong road (it spans almost 6 years), and certainly held many challenges. As a cis-white-hetero female, I have absolutely no personal experience in what a situation like that might be like. However, their story certainly held kernels of details I have heard people recount anecdotally, and it's heartbreaking. They came together because regardless of gender, they found love with each other, but there were so many external pressures being pushed onto them that I wasn't surprised when they finally cracked. Even Tristan, who was so sure of himself from the first time we met him, started to waver in his identity. I think this story is best read somewhat "blindly" (as in, I'm not about to outline some key conflicts) because it allows you to really feel things in the moment. I also think if some things are explained out of context, it would make things seem more juvenile then they actually were.
The part that really got to me was the final chapters. I honestly wanted to cry. My heart broke for both the characters, and to then go through what they did was even worse. To even think that this is something that may happen in real life is devastating. Every person should have the right to love.

5 Heartbreaking Stars!!!

FINALLY! Throughout the whole series there has been a build up with Luke and Tristan and here we finally get to see behind their very beautiful and trying relationship. As well as this book has two of my favorite themes: friends to lovers and straight to gay.
Luke is a McCullough but he was also the shining star until his knee went out with all his dreams. Now back home, he is bitter and resentful and is taking it out on the McCulloughs. It was easier to lash out that accept defeat. Luke's cousin comes home from college with a best friend named Tristan who also will be the new employee to the logging company.
For some reason, Luke is drawn to Tristan but can't figure out why. The two of them spark up an easy banter and friendship which starts to make Luke happy and also confuses the ever living shit out of him. After getting mixed signals Tristan makes a move which both excites and repels Luke.
These new feelings startle Luke but make him want different things for a change. Giving in to Tristan was easy but coming out is harder. For Tristan and Luke from the beginning they have conflict with Luke's little sister Sheilagh falling for Tristan and catching them only made Luke uneasier with this situation.
Tristan is such a stand up guy and is ok with being Luke's secret because he loves Luke, but this secret is causing a rift between the two. So Tristan patiently supports Luke for six years in secret. SIX YEARS!! Yikes! Poor Luke and Tristan have to go through so much with Luke's many demons, to only find out that with the McCulloughs there were no obstacles only love and acceptance, but it is a small ignorant town and not everyone is as accepting.
Luke has to man up or lose his heart before it is too late. This story by far was my favorite. It was beautiful and heart wrenching where we feel everything that these poor men are going through. Their trials and tribulations broke my heart. You get your heart ripped out a time or two but thankfully it also swells and blossoms for these two beautiful men. *sigh*

My feels are all discombobulated! First and foremost, this is a male/male relationship. I have only read a hand full of them but this one was just freaking epic. *sigh*
It is slightly different than the others in the series as it spans a great deal of time. We see what was happening on this side of all those hidden scenes in the previous stories and how their relationship began from the first moment.
This story was about being who you are and not being ashamed of it. It hit right into my cold heart and has stayed there. An absolute beautiful story. Oh. And there's this one scene that just made my jaw drop and I had to take a moment. You know what I mean? Oh man. Woooo. *fans self* I mean, there is more than just that scene but once in awhile you come across a scene that is just so hot and so well written that it sticks with you. *sigh*

This was my favorite of the series so far.
This is the story of Luke and Tristen. It starts right when they meet and incorporates all the past books. The stories are all happening together, not one after another. The angst is kept to a minimum and the sex is hot. What else can a reader ask for?
This series is about how a "perfect" family is not all perfect but quite "normal" and they all accept it. Sometimes people within families have expectations for themselves that the rest of the family does not have for them. They see things that are not real, just perceived. Lydia Michaels hits the nail on the head every time. Don't go through life living the life you think others want you too....live your own!

This Book to me really hit home...From the beginning I knew it would grab me and get my Full attention . With dealing with some of these issues in my own Family I could completly unite with these Characters. I have loved this series from the beginning,the McCullough's are such a fun and interesting Family and even though this book was a little darker than the usual series ,it was needed to show the hardships and struggles of being Gay in a Small Community . Thank You Lydia for hitting another Home Run!!!!!

As with all the McCollough Mountain books, Forsaking Truth is not your typical love story. It is an in depth look at life and society. At the trials and joys that Gay men face today and this couple faced in particular. In my opinion Lydia Michaels is virtuoso of prose, addressing sensitive subjects with intelligence, emotion and empathy. Kudos Lydia, on another shining gem in your tiara!

Broken Man is the fifth book in the McCullough Mountain series from Lydia Michaels, and it’s a must-read for fans of the series who have been curious about the secret relationship that has been occurring throughout the series. In this one, we finally get to understand everything that was happening.
While a decent amount of the book goes over things we have seen and read about in the prior books, there was enough new content to suck the reader ever deeper into their relationship. It was great to finally get answers, to watch how the relationship unfolded, and to feel the love instead of having it as a curiosity at the side. While I did enjoy finding out the specifics, I do feel details toward the end were a bit rushed. The events had such a huge impact, and yet I felt they were over in the blink of an eye. I really would have liked to explore those aspects more, to see justice served.
All in all, this was another great addition to the series. It’s certainly one you need to read if you’ve been enjoying certain side characters.

Damn you, Lydia Michaels! Tristan & Luke's story is so painful to read. So much hatred for the things we Don't or won't understand. Having guy people in my family I understand the fight probably more so. It's an unfortunate fact of life. However, once again the McCullough Parents come through for all their children with undivided love and acceptance. So many current issues discussed in just this particular family.

I cannot get enough of this series.
I fell in love with the McCullough family with book one, Sacred Waters. Lydia Michaels has created an Irish family you cannot help but want to be a part of, and more importantly, married into, lol.
This large family has had its ups and downs over the years and its share of emotional turmoil. But Luke's story has its own unique circumstances and Michaels does a superb job at writing a heart-wrenching tale of two men who struggle coming to terms in their romantic relationship.
Luke McCullough was born to be a professional football star when an injury took him out of the game--permanently. He returns to Center County feeling like an utter failure. Now working at his father's lumber yard, he tries to find his way in a world that doesn't fit right. He is bitter about the future now denied him and feels about as useless as tits on a bull (Luke's own words from Forsaking Truth). In a nutshell, Luke is his own worst enemy.
Tristan Hughes moves to Center County and moves in with a relative to the McCullough's and accepts an entry position at the local lumberyard. This is where both Tristan and Luke meet and where friendship turns into something...more.
Forsaking Truth flashes to scenes previously seen in earlier books, but are told from Luke's perspective. So a lot gets explained on the hows and whys of Luke's burly behavior. He is coming to terms with sexual feelings toward another man--something that has never plagued him before. He has had relationships with only women at this point. But there is no denying the attraction he feels with Tristan. Luke finally feels like those odd pieces of his life are falling into place. He feels accepted for who he is and most importantly, he feels a love that is all encompassing.
But there are bumps along the way as Forsaking Truth covers five years. Five years of fights, hurt feelings, and denial. Both Tristan and Luke have to work through some serious issues. The major one being Luke's unwillingness to come out to his parents.
There were a few things I felt was missing in this story and I had wished to have seen more conversation between Finn and Luke. They are twins and I felt their relationship was sort of skimmed over.
Also, there is not enough interaction with Mama McCullough. I seriously love this woman. She is a secondary character that has wormed her way into my heart. She makes me laugh out loud and giggle like a little girl.
However, Michaels does provide a very touching and emotional scene with Luke and his parents.
Be prepared for a more serious subject matter with Forsaking Truth. It's not as humorous as previous books, but I didn't expect it to be. Luke is a quiet and private person, so unlike the other Chatty Cathys in the McCullough Clan. But the romance, the heat, and the sizzling sexual chemistry is still strong and very present.
A great addition to the McCullough Series.

This review has spoilers guys, one thing I'll say before that, I can't recommend this book, too much suffering for my liking. If I would have known about the violence in it I wouldn't have read it.
This book is a total drama, it's like this famous book, “The Thorn Birds” but with two guys. They've been together for six years, for God's sake, and they're still keeping their love a secret.
Luke is a good guy, but he lives in terror. He loves Tristan, but he wishes he were a "normal guy," able to marry a woman and have children—"the whole package."
Tristan doesn't want to keep it a secret anymore, but at the same time, he had to leave Texas when it was discovered he was gay. His parents and friends turned their backs on him and completely ostracized him.
How unpleasant can it be that your partner talks sh*t about women when he is with other men? Talking about his past conquests like they are just goods so his coworkers don't suspect his sexuality. What about listening to gay slurs and not even flinching about it? You don't need to declare gay yourself to reject those kinds of words.
However, what did Tristan do to Shelaigh?? Wtf... Pinning for her, confusing her when she already knows about her brother's relationship with Tristan. WTF man... Such a low move. Still it's understandable because six years like that... I can't imagine how hard it can be.
But gosh... Again Luke doing low moves, trying to be, bisexual I guess? Gosh these two men have it really hard
At the same time, we follow the story of Luke's brothers and sister, and oh my god, the drama is palpable. This book would fit perfectly as a soap opera because that's exactly what it is. A real melodrama.
I hope this book has a HEA because gosh this is a hardship. If not I will feel cheated
I cried hard when Luke finally came out to his parents😭, finally a good move towards himself and his relationship with Tristan.
I don't know what rating to give it. It made me feel everything. The characters are well-developed, the story is good, but at the same time it was torture. I suffered so much for Luke and Tristan. It was too much 😭😭
Reject that... I can't recommend this book. 3 ⭐ maximum. I thought about DNF at 85%. I chose this as a fiction book, not to suffer all this. Was it really necessary to add this awful, heart wrenching beating?💔💔😭😭. What's wrong here?
Now I fully understand when people online were saying how refreshing was to have a show like heated rivalry where none of the guys were seriously hurt by hate crimes or simply by the bad luck that seems to haunt so many fictional characters within the gay community.
So. True. This book was a wrecked... If the book didn't have that terrible assault I suppose I could have give it 4⭐ even with all that drama. But nope. Not a good book to recommend. I wish someone would have told me about the violence in it. I wouldn't have read it.

Tristan and Luke are a pair, boy what a pair. Neither has come out and admitted to their (Luke's) family, but Tristan accepts who he is for the most part. Luke on the other hand, absolutely refuses to come out to anyone. At first he says it's because he fears his family's reactions, but he really fears himself. So the two remain in a secret relationship for 6 years until something horrific forces both their hands. Sounds like a painful but perhaps realistic take on the way some in the LGBTQ community have to live their lives.
I wanted to love this story but I just couldn't. This is the most messed up, toxic relationship I've read in quite awhile. Luke not only keeps Tristan and his identity a secret, but he exudes toxic masculinity with other men even in front of Tristan, just to save face so he doesn't have to confront his true self. Time and again he hurts Tristan because he refuses to come to terms with himself. Then there's Luke's little sister Sheila, God don't get me started on her...anyway, while I appreciate how hard some LGBTQ couples, particularly this one, have it in parts of this country, I just could not connect with this story or its main couple, at all. I don't like Luke, I don't like the way he treated Tristan, and I wanted much better for Tristan than being kept a secret for so long. The best part though is the ending, rushed though it is. It's seriously sweet and brought a few tears to my eyes.

I wanted to listen to this story based on the narrator alone because David Allen Vargo is just that fantastic (though, to be fair, the blurb also sounded good). Listening to that wonderfully deep, gravelly voice got me through this emotion-ravaging book. The echoing special effects to signal internal dialogue was an interesting touch too.
This was nothing like the small-town love story I was expecting based on the blurb (particularly because it lacked any content warnings), which greatly impacted my star rating. It was extremely angsty and dealt with very heavy topics, from Luke and Tristan's six-plus years as a closeted couple and both working through internalized homophobia, to dealing with homophobic parents and coworkers, toxic masculinity, and graphic on-page hate-crime violence.
Neither MC is especially endearing and both behave like asshats at times, but that actually made them more believable given their story and circumstances. Their hard-won HEA and self-acceptance comes at a steep cost, and it's not overstating to say this book should come with a boatload of content warnings, either in the blurb or as an Author's Note that's read aloud in the audio, because chalking it all up to "adversity" doesn't cut it.

For me it was the first book by the author Lydia Michaels. It is the 5th volume in a series, but it is the first book with MM main protagonist. It's good to read as a standalone or listen to.
The story started out pretty well. Luke and Tristan are torn on the one hand, and confused about their coming out on the other. It's not always easy in love and not everyone is perfect. You also make bad decisions in your life sometimes. But the more I listened to the story, the less Luke could convince me.
But overall, the book entertained me well.
This was also due to David Allen Vargo, who delivered a great narration. I could always tell the difference between the various characters and he has a pleasant pace of narration.

I was so hesitant to read this after Sheilagh’s book… Luke made me SO angry! But I guess there’s two sides to every story. And what a story this was.
Luke finds himself wanting this man, when he’s never thought about men sexually before. He and Tristan start this romance and it’s so passionate and endearing. But Luke is so afraid. Tristan knows who he is and he falls madly in love with someone who is conflicted about himself. Luke knows he loves Tristan but he has some deep rooted issues that cause a lot of strife in their relationship.
As always, Michaels evokes so much emotion in her stories. She depicts the vulnerability so well, especially with Luke giving himself to Tristan, it’s almost heartbreaking.
Luke finds himself wanting this man, when he’s never thought about men sexually before. He and Tristan start this romance and it’s so passionate and endearing. But Luke is so afraid. Tristan knows who he is and he falls madly in love with someone who is conflicted about himself. Luke knows he loves Tristan but he has some deep rooted issues that cause a lot of strife in their relationship.
As always, Michaels evokes so much emotion in her stories. She depicts the vulnerability so well, especially with Luke giving himself to Tristan, it’s almost heartbreaking.

Broken Man is the fifth book in the series, but I started listening to the audiobook not realizing that. While I was able to follow along in the story, I still felt like there was a ton of details and backstory I was missing. Maybe that’s why I didn’t connect with the story the same way other readers have.
This book supposedly centers on the relationship between Luke and Tristan, but honestly it feels more like a book about the unhealthy relationship between Tristan, a closeted gay man, and Sheila, the younger sister of his secret boyfriend. After awhile, Tristan feels less like a real character and more like a literary device used to create opportunities for Sheila’s character growth. That really detracted from the romance between Luke and Tristan. When an entire relationship is used as a plot device to craft a tragic backstory of the emotionally damaged female lead, it feels kind of shallow.
What saved this book for me was the sweet moments between Luke and Tristan. When the author actually focuses on developing Luke and Tristan’s relationship, it really works. They have to overcome so much —especially internally—to be together. I wish we had more story and plot focusing on Tristan and Luke to balance out all of the other family drama that kept stealing the attention.
The audiobook was narrated by David Allen Vargo who does a great job. The audio production was also nicely done - clean with no outside noises to distract from the performance.

BROKEN MAN follows the trials and tribulations of Luke McCullough as he grapples with the loss of his athletic career and pursues a romance he never saw coming. Author Lydia Michaels once again offers readers insight into complex emotional situations within the conventional structure of a romance. In this case, a gay romance and the multiple community and family responses as the relationship progresses. This book provides another angle on multiple scenes that were originally described from other characters’ POVs in earlier series books. This is an excellent addition to the series. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
