Random events ignite a chain reaction with deadly consequences.
A lone yachtsman witnesses a murder on board a luxury super yacht while making port in the glamorous principality of Monaco. He’s there to meet his daughter who’s part of the army of global media arriving in the south of France to witness the launch of the world’s first fully sustainable fusion reactor, ITER, and what they hope will be the dawn of a new golden age for humanity.
But in his efforts to persuade the authorities that a murder has taken place, he begins to uncover what he suspects is a clandestine plot by foreign agents to ensure that the most complex machine ever constructed, and all who have gathered there to report on this historic event, end up as a cloud of irradiated dust.
To make matters worse, he soon becomes a target to be eliminated. Yet he must somehow stay alive long enough to convince the authorities the plot is real and to act before it’s too late. Because if he fails, then his own daughter will be dead.
A witnessed murder connects town ITER sabotage attempt....
Xu is harvesting helium-3 from the moon to fuel a highly efficient fusion machine, but the Europeans already have their deuterium fuelled reactor ready to go so he needs to thwart its activation. Meanwhile a female spy is in his midst and he shoots her himself. Unfortunately this is witnessed by a retired surveillance engineer Charles, who records it and makes an anonymous call to the Monaco police, thus starting the chain reaction of the title - which also alludes to the act of fusion. This story encompasses intrigue, murder, surveillance, killer insect drones, suspense, sabotage and much more to create an entertaining thriller.
I don't know what the failings of the original were. This story brings science fiction to the contemporary world with a combination of police procedural and civilian engineering. Compelling. Fast moving. And a couple of characters who do the impossible before living happily ever after.
Different from what I expect from Kilby but you can’t miss his writing style. I enjoy his sci-fi books the best, but this was the same tightly woven story.
Fast-paced technothriller with a satisfying end. Interesting technology: drones with darts, energy fusion, and some soy tech. Another fun story from Kilby.
It is a techno/thriller and the story will keep you excited till the end. Full a gadgets to spy on specifics (or all) and even kill you on a modern scale. This story feels slightly short, it could have been a bit more pushed further but it remains excellent.
Gerald M. Kilby is my favorite indie/self-published author and after his beloved Colony Mars series, i was curious about another genre but his writing doesn't change, the pace always good (no dull time). He's choosing a very green topic and even if some may think this whole story is really just fiction, keep always in mind that every stories are inspired by real life! It is chilly at the end because i have no doubt it can happen.
You wanna feel threatened? You wanna bite nervously all your nails? You wanna read something that can easily smell like a 'Mission Impossible' type of story .. Reaction is for you.
Random events set the stage for this outstanding and riveting Techno thriller. It slowly drew mne in as I began to read this book and didn't let me go rul the last page. I loved it..
