From New York Times Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff comes a suspenseful Dark Fantasy, Wall Men, Book One. (Book Two, coming June 2022!)
MONSTERS? VAMPIRES? GHOSTS AND DEMONS? MEN WHO GUARD THE WALL BETWEEN US AND THEM.
I’m sitting at my grandma’s bedside, moments away from losing her, when she begins to rant about monsters and men trapped in her old mansion. I practically grew up there, so I know it’s the pain meds talking. There’s nothing inside that drafty house except rotting books, rusty pipes, and neglected antiques.
“I’ve written down all the rules, Lake. You must follow them,” she tells me, gasping for air. “The Wall Men cannot get free. They are soulless and evil. They will try to seduce you. But you cannot listen. They must remain chained to the wall.”
What the…?
With her final breath, she makes me swear to read her journals. But above all, I must promise to never go inside her bedroom, the one that’s always kept locked.
Madness!
Weeks after her funeral, I’m forced to confront the neglected estate she’s left behind. I can’t afford the taxes, so it has to be cleaned and sold.
That’s when I hear a deep velvety voice on the other side of her bedroom door, demanding to be let out.
And dammit if I don’t want to break my promise and see who’s on the other side.

Whether it’s Romance, Suspense/Thriller, or Fantasy, there are always big heroes to root for, smart and resourceful heroines, and a ton of heart pumping excitement in every story.
Mimi lives with her extremely patient husband (“Be right there! Just one more page, honey!”), two pirates-in-training (their boys), and their three spunky dragons (really, just very tiny dogs with big attitudes) Snowy, Mini, and Mack, in the vampire-unfriendly state of Arizona.
This book hooked me. Gave me book hangover. And made me want to re-read Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. I loved every single dark and exciting part of it.
Let me start by saying that I find reading new to me authors is a bit difficult. I’m not good with change. That also applies to new to me genres. BUT there are a select few authors I would read whatever they put out and Mimi Jean is definitely one of them.
I won’t spoil you with anything too detailed regarding the plot. I believe the blurb has enough info. But I can comment on how I felt. Which was in one word: hooked.
The story starts out mysterious and kind of spooky. Where are those voices coming from? Are they real? Is it a hallucination? What could they be? And then our heroine’s reality is flip on its axis and her life will never be the same.
I found myself racing through the story and yet wanting to slow down and enjoy every morsel of the world building. It was exciting and I even laughed more than a couple of times because Mimi is great at including Easter eggs for her readers. And even though I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2, I found myself content with where the story left off.
Wall Men: A Haunted House is book 1 in the Wall Men series by author Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. It is told from the heroine’s point of view with semi resolved ending. Genre: Dark Fantasy.

Lake Norfolk was raised by her eccentric no nonsense grandmother Rain after her parents disappeared. Taught to be self-reliant, never make a promise she can’t or won't keep, her world is very black and white. When Rain's deathbed confession spirals into the rantings of a severely mentally disturbed woman, Lake is crushed. Men chained to a wall in the main bedroom forced to guard a bridge between her world and a world of monsters that want her dead? Impossible! It leaves her feeling guilty and heartbroken for not seeing it and not getting her help she’s clearly needed all these years.
When she starts hearing voices in the old crumbling mansion, Lake begins to question her own sanity. Until suddenly she finds Rain wasn’t crazy. Ripped from the safety of her own world and beliefs, Lake must navigate a world where manners and pleasantries are frowned upon, the weak don't survive, and everyone has an agenda. She discovers she has been lied to her entire life and is suddenly thrust into a world she is painfully unprepared for and important without knowledge that was purposely withheld from her.
Lake must fight for her survival and trust her own instincts, where she finds unexpected allies, beautifully deadly traps, and nothing is what it seems.
I started this book with no expectations other than to be entertained. This book is truly something different and unexpected with a title that makes complete sense once you dive into the rabbit hole. Mimi Jean has built another intriguing world where as a reader I am starving for more and I’m not sure anything can satiate my hunger and anticipation for it. Lake has a long and I’m sure perilous journey ahead of her and I can't wait to take every step with her.
I am always in awe of this author and her ability to write in almost any genre, and yet put her own stamp on it that is so unique, I’d still recognize her work anywhere. Part horror, part dark fantasy, part snark, Wall Men is an introduction to a new world of monsters and men that is impossible to put down.
Lake Norfolk was raised by her curmudgeon of a grandmother after the death of her parents. And while her upbringing was eccentric, it gave Lake no clue as to what mysteries the house held for her once her grandmother died. Voices calling to her, warnings of men chained to the wall, rules she needed to follow. It all seemed too fantastic and unbelievable to be true. But nothing and no one in Lake’s world was as it seemed, and the Wall Men needed her to fulfill her destiny.
I loved this story. It was engaging and wild, thought provoking and ridiculous all at the same time. It also quickly took a turn that I did not see coming. I assumed that this story was going to be a haunted house/gothic horror romance, but leave it to Mimi to totally veer this into a different direction. Instead, in a magic wardrobe type situation, Lake enters another world inhabited by vampires, trolls, giants and other unspeakable beings, and learns the history of her family and the secrets her grandmother kept from her. This story was a whirlwind fantasy tour, and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more.
Firstly, as always, my thanks to Mimi and her team for supplying me with an ARC to read and review, this in no way affects my review..
So, here we go Mimi lovers, a brand new world to invite ourselves into! Go on, I dare you!
As always with our wonderful diverse author, we get loads of laughs out of the blue. I loved that I was reading and being serious, and the next second I was laughing out loud. And the Mimi smart ass Heroine is there mouthing off at the bad guys like we've come to expect. What's different about this book then, you ask? Well, everything else! This is a whole new creepy world for the reader to immerse themselves in with some really screwed up characters, with some gross habits.
Lake appears to be your average girl, she's had a boyfriend, Dave, until he cheated on her, she's fantasized about her grandmother's 'man Friday' Bard, for most of her life, but he refused her advances, and she's lived in the cottage on gran's estate, alone, since she was a child. Normal , right? By why does gran live in the huge mansion, with a ballroom, all alone.? and why is the main bedroom door always locked? who's voice does Lake hear, why is the dog named Master, and what kind of name is Bard? All perfectly normal, yeah right. So many questions!
What will Lake do? Will she survive, and face this strange new world? And who will her love interest be!!? Dopey DAVE, man Friday Bard, Alwar, or one of the other Wall Men, or could it even be Bard's nephew, there has to be something to that story? How does he even have a nephew? Ugh, Mimi! The questions just keep coming!
As always with our favorite author we get some little cameos, which I love, and a mention of leather pants, which could be a cross over to lots of books, lol! Never underestimate the power of Mimi's writing.
I loved this weird, freaky new world from the pen of one of my favorite authors, and damn, I need to finish this story! will one more book be enough? So, a few more weeks to wait for closure. Thank you, Mimi, for your amazing imagination, and also for trusting me with your babies.

As Grandma Rain lay in her hospital bed, dying, she says, “You’re late.”
Grandma Rain had raised Lake, after her parents disappeared. As they talk, Grandma Rain cracks me up with her dialogue.
“Lake, I broke the rules. Once and only once. It cost me your mother’s life. Your father’s too. Not that I gave a crap about him. Useless prick. But you loved that man. And you lost him because of me…The Wall Men took them. They did it to punish me because I wouldn’t set them free.”
A haunted house. It is so much more than that. Wall Men is not like any other haunted house story I have read. I love when an author takes an original approach to an oft told tale. No one can say that Mimi Jean Pamfiloff doesn’t have original thoughts.
Lake has no idea what is happening in the house, but did she have to do that to get the answers? Worlds collide and she has a vital role to fulfill to save them all and prevent a War of the Worlds.
I won’t share her travails, only tell you that they are worth finding out for yourself.
Thrills and chills abound in a world you need to ‘see’ to believe.
I never know what will happen when I crack open a Mimi Jean Pamfiloff book, but she never fails to surprise me with her ability to create worlds and characters that will keep me reading until the last page is read.
We have smiles and laughs with the pain and loss…BUT, the story doesn’t end here and I can hardly wait to read more.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Wall Men by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff.
The thought of loosing her grandmother was heartbreaking for Lake her grandmother was a constant presence in her life since the disappearance of her parents no matter how her grandmother hated the people of the town she lived in she was always there for Lake.
Instead of having those peaceful final moments that she should have had with her grandmother being lucid and reminiscing about the past and being able to say goodbye this wasn’t the case her grandmother was talking about things that were so impossible to believe she must have been suffering with confusion to make up such things.
So on her grandmothers passing Lake decides to sell the home and grounds she grew up around yes the house was creepy as hell but it should fetch a good price as it’s a large house set in it’s own land. However there’s only a few catches that might effect the sale.
1. The house is falling apart and in desperate need of repair. 2. Lake has no funds to fix it up to make it more presentable. and finally 3. Ohh yes the important one the one her grandmother didn’t get a chance to explain in depth about is that the house is a bridge to another world one that isn’t so friendly and who’s inhabitants would eat ya as soon as look at ya and is guarded by creatures that are locked in the house to stop them crossing over into the human world as they are.
Yes these are a lot of things to cope with the first two are barely manageable however the last one is going to open up a world of new adventures some not so good as Lake will soon find out. There are dangerous places and adventures to be had just not in the world as Lake knows it.

Wow, can I just stop there! A new genre for Mimi Jean and I couldn’t put this book down. What an imagination she has. Lake is thrown into a mysterious world of all kinds of creatures. It is hard for her to comprehend how deceitful the people were in her life. Her life seemed pretty normal until her grandmother died. What evil lurks behind the walls of her home? Well she soon finds out. They are vampires, giants, trolls, all manner of creature that she stumbles upon. She is a pawn in the game of two would be kings. She is torn. What will she do, who will she help, her life seems to be planned out for her, she needs to be strong. What more will happen, how will it all end. I guess we’ll find out in book 2. Kudos again to Mimi Jean on an outstanding book number 56, and her entry into this new genre. But, of course, we do like the appearance of our favorite librarian and her assistant, and men in leather pants!
I thoroughly loved reading the mesmerizing, engrossing, and spellbinding paranormal story by the phenomenal, amazing author, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. Right before Lake's Grandma dies, she has Lake promise to read her journals and tells her about the Wall Men and monsters. When Lake discovers the voice in the house talking to her and asking for her help is in the locked room, she finds the key and opens the door, discovers the Wall Men, makes a meal and feeds them, and becomes sucked into another world with giants and monsters. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, engaging & captivating characters, riveting story from the first page of the story until the last page of the story, and leaving the reader full of anticipation and yearning for the next book in the series!
An intriguing start to something new. Mim Jean Pamfiloff never fails to deliver a great story and leave you craving for more. Wall Men has the added feature of keeping you on the edge of your seat. A fascinating story of a young woman figuring out life after the passing of her grandma leads to so much more than she ever thought. If you love a good world building story than I highly recommend this one for you.
Wow! I’m not even sure what to say here… it’s an entirely new world you’ve built. Vampires, giants, dragons and even trolls but not in a way I’ve ever read about them before. And the way the Norfolk family and our world coexist with theirs??? Mind blown. Why does it have to be a cliffhanger? Write faster, would you?? I NEED book two to find out what happens…
This author has the ability to suck you into every world she creates. Wall Men is no exception. I started reading this and thinking ok, I have 2.5 hours of this and all of a sudden, I’m at the end! Lake is a really likeable character and I was really hoping Bard would return her feelings, I can’t believe he’s not going to be there now she’s back. I love Alwar and really hope he turns into a good one. I’m also hoping Dave turns out to be the other proxy, just for her to really get revenge. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

That was over way too quickly! And I took my time with it. A dark and terror-filled world full of bloodsuckers, war giants, vicious beasts, and one bridge that connects our world to theirs. Lake has no idea what's going on no one gives her a straight answer and she had no idea who to trust. A fun and dark story.
I rarely read fantasy romance, but I had read a handful of Mimi's books in the past and since I loved her writing style, I trusted her to write a sensual romance with elements of a world that I never experienced before. And I'm so glad I did, because I really enjoyed Wall Men. Her world building is phenomenal. Her characters are both realistic and fantastical. Her writing style had me hooked from the first page and held my undivided attention until I finished it. And now I wait patiently like everyone else for the next book in the series.
Oh this is another promising series! I enjoyed it a lot despite a lot of cursing ( in this case it's for survival^^;;) and i simply want more!!
Lake just lost her grandmother who, on her death bed, spoke of monsters she must be careful and avoid at all cost, asking promises and such....For Lake she was dellusionnal but when she starts hearing voices from the house she starts fearing hidden secrets.... When suddenly in another world, where rules are completely differents, she will need to decide who to trust and show her hidden strength to survive.
I really loved Lake, she is trying to do well yes she bothered me with her addiction, and how stupid she can be ( really we tell you to read something you do it girl, information is the key) but she does her best. And she does take care of Master, the dog I'm still wondering about the wall men but i sure hope there is a way to twist some vow to save one ( yes i could not resist his kindness).
really it was full of action and the cliffhanger is arg too cruel but i definitively want to read more also to discover more about that universe definitively a must read
Do you believe in monsters? Lake Norfolk for sure didn’t until her grandmother died. On her deathbed, Lake warns her that she needs to read her grandmother’s journals so that she needs to keep the Wall Men chained up. Lake thinks her grandmother has lost her mind. That is, until voices in the house start calling to her to help them. Did Lake read the journals? Of course not! She should have because perhaps then she wouldn’t have been sucked into the land of monsters, where she is caught in a war about to erupt between two kings, and she is the only one who can stop it! Nothing and no one in her life will ever be the same anymore. Will she?
What can I say other than I devoured this book in one sitting! Wall Men is a clever paranormal story that ensnared my attention immediately from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. One of the things that I admire about this Author is that she has this amazing ability to create entertaining stories that cross multiple genres.
Lake is the leading lady and I adored her. She is tough as nails, independent, caring, and very skeptical of what her grandma revealed to her on her deathbed . . . That is until she starts to hear voices in the old house. Pulled into a dangerous world that she isn’t familiar with; one full of alluring and manipulative creatures, Lake isn’t sure just who to trust.
This novel is original, fast-paced, and full of adventure. With spectacular world building, I was completely enthralled by that story within the pages. Told solely from Lake’s POV, Wall Men is a relatively quick read where the story flows seamlessly between the pages. As this is book one in the Wall Men series, there is a the cliffhanger and I find myself eager to find out what is next!
I voluntarily read an early version of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Lake Norfolk was raised by her Grandmother - River, after her parents disappeared. River made Lake live in a separate house from her growing up. So, Lake wasn't in the 'main' house growing up and isn't used to it now that her grandmother has passed away.
Lake has been hearing voices in her grandmother's house since her passing. Lake hears a man's voice asking for food and blankets, voices coming from the wall. She swears she feels someone looking at her. Lake finds answers when she opens one of the doors in the old decaying house. She is pulled into a picture and thrust into the unknown world of the men with the voices.
Lake must decide who is telling the truth. Who can she trust. Who will help her get back home? Will she be able to get back home?
This book is from Lake's point of view.
I did receive a free ARC copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.
This is an amazing start to a new UF/PNR series that promises to be as awesome as the King Series. There is drama, suspense, touches of humor, defined characters, action, and adventure. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
Mimi Jean Pamfiloff is always a one click author for me but I wasn't really sure what to expect in Wall Men. I will say I was fascinated by the world Mimi conjured up from the get-go. A world filled with giants, dragons, vampires, trolls, demons and all sorts of fantastical beings. Then she surrounded them with mysterious ways and lives lived in complete contrast to humankind. Deceitful and nefarious intentions to gain control of Monsterland seem to pervade warring factions and Lake Norfolk is at the core. She had no idea what lay ahead of her when she made a death bed promise to her grandmother. Now she feels that she, like Alice, has fallen down the proverbial rabbit hole and ends up in a place where right is left, down is up, nice is rude and kindness is considered a weakness.
By far one of my favorite books this year. An epic story telling by MJP and dare I say this is now one of my absolute favorite. I felt this book is perfectly balanced and can appeal to many different genre lovers. Wall Men is mysterious and keeps you enraptured with all of the endless possibilities of where this story can take us. I am dying for part 2 and I will definitely be reading this again.
So excited about this new series from Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. Right before Lake's grandmother (who raised her) passes away she rambles on about the Wall Men in her house. My attention was definitely captured then, I couldn't wait to find out about these men. Of course, when Lake heard the voices in the wall, I believe she realized her grandmother wasn't a looney bird. This story has lots of ominous happenings and kept me flipping through the pages as quickly as I could. I loved the entire book; Mimi has exceeded my expectations once again. Her Dead King series gave me some of the same creepy vibes and that was my favorite book of all times. This is definitely going to be another one!
ARC read. This book kept me hooked. It is fast paced and action packed. Without giving away spoilers, Lark learns there is more out there than she thought. There is a monster world and the rules are different. She doesn't know who to trust. Does she trust the Vampire king or the war giants. There are a few Easter eggs if you know what to look for.
Looking forward to book 2. What a cliff hanger this one ended on!!
Eeeekkk another thrilling world created by Mimi Jean for our entertainment and excitement! So many twists and turns as Lake learns about her family history and all the monsters and monsterland that she is destined to save. After her grandmother’s death Lake wasn’t ready for what she’s about to be dragged into but it’s definitely not going to be a boring ride! Cannot wait for book 2!!
A brand new genre for a favorite author! I was a little worried that it would be too dark for me, but it was similar to the King series -- except now there are all these monsters and tons of new rules. Lake has to be on top of her game to figure out what is happening, but there are lots of competing interests involved. I had a hard time putting this down because I had to know what would come next. I can't wait for the next book to answer my questions and probably bring up even more.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wall Men: A Haunted House by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff is the first book from the Wall Men series.
Lake Norfolk was raised by her very unique and not so likable by everyone, grandmother Rain. She taught her to be independent, strong, and to always keep her promises. When Rain was dying she revealed a huge secret and gave a warning to Lake. Everything she said sounded like crazy talk which saddened the young woman. A few days later when the whispers began at the house and she opened the forbidden door she found out that her grandma wasn't crazy at all. With one little trick by the infamous Wall Men, she ended up in another world filled with all kinds of monsters. Lake discovers that she has been lied to her whole life and that she is a pawn in that supernatural world. Her only goal is to survive and go back home.
This is one of the best fantasy novels I have ever read. The plot is incredible, filled with mystery, suspense, and danger. It sucked me in from the first chapter. It has a steady pace and good world-building. I love the descriptions, especially on the haunted house. The characters were amazing, especially Lake. She is an innocent-looking girl with bravery and so much love inside her. This book leaves us with many unanswered questions and a cliffhanger.
I loved this book and I can't wait to read the next one. I will rate it with 5 stars.
I read this book having already read every other book by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. I knew that this one was supposed to be different, and it was. It's not as light-hearted as most of Mimi Jean's books. It certainly doesn't end with a HEA. It's not really a romance, and there aren't zany jokes to crack you up. What there is is a main character, Lake, who is very confused when her grandmother (her only living relative) dies and the family secrets start to come out. And wow, those secrets are BIG. In some ways, literally. Lake is now having to make life or death decisions that affect both her and many others, without having been taught who to trust, or what her responsibilities are. She has to guess at who is/has been lying to her, including people she was sure that she trusted before things became so complicated. The characters and the world that they live in are interesting, and I plan to read the next book to see what happens, especially since I want explanations. Lake is an adult, why wasn't she prepared for this by those who knew? I was already grumpy (not feeling well) while reading this book, and I kept getting distracted by being pissed and baffled by Lake's grandmother's actions. So maybe take my review with a grain of salt, since I probably should've read something more lighthearted until I was feeling better.
Her upbringing is unconventional, forcing her to be self reliant and strong. With her parents death, Grandma was her teacher. But now with her death there are things she's discovering that don't make sense. Voices from the locked room she'd been forbidden to enter. Bard, the caretaker acting strangely. She meant to read the journals her grandma left her but they are burned when her home burns. Forced to live in the mansion she can not afford, she must try to sell it. Suddenly a surprise find makes it possible to stay. The painting of the three chained men in the locked room call to her. Now she's pulled into a different world. Monsters, dragons, giants and vampires are just a few of the things she must contend with. Does she side with the Wall Men who claim they protect her world or the Blood King whose bite intoxicates her. Will she be safe here or can she find her way back to her world. You will want to follow Lake on her journey, will she be strong enough to make it home.
I have been in a book funk for a couple of months now and have tried to start a book with not much interest, but I finally was able to start this and enjoy it! I love Mimi's mind! The things she comes up with! This book is so different from other stories I've read and some of the things that get said or done crack me up. On to book 2!!!
