Just One Night

Rate this book
From USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charity Ferrell comes a one-night stand romance filled with angst, heartbreak, and humor.

A one-night stand with a single, widowed dad can change everything.

“What the f*ck have I done?” aren’t the first words you want to hear after a one-night stand.
Yet that’s what he gave me.

Dallas Barnes is tall, dark, and handsome.
He’s also scarred, rough, and broken down by burdens.
A single dad. A widower. A lost soul.

We found each other in the back of a dark pub.
He brought the whiskey.
I brought the bad decisions.
He called it a mistake.
I vowed never to speak to him again.

That vow is broken with one test.
Two pink lines have turned my life upside down.
One night can change everything.

3-3.5 Dallas and Willow Stars

I did enjoy most of this book and the story took an unusual turn that I did not see coming. However , there was a major part that didn't sit well with me and I think it is down to my own personal preferences and not a reflection on the author at all.

Dallas is the former bodyguard to Stella , from ' Just Her Bodyguard' and he is also Hudson's big brother from the same book. When we last saw him in 'Bodyguard' , his wife had just died from cancer at the age of 30. Dallas had been with Lucy and no one else since childhood. She really was the love of his life and we hear this repeatedly through the story. They have a young daughter called Maven.

Willow has known Dallas as a colleague / friend for five years . She is Stella's assistant and has just finished a long term relationship.

They are both in a bad place when they meet up at a function for Stella and Hudson. They get drunk. They get intimate. And they get pregnant.

The morning after their hook up , Willow awakens to find Dallas pacing the floor and wondering out loud what on earth he has done. He is full of regret and remorse at sleeping with another woman. I felt so sorry for Willow. Her humiliation , mortification and distressed state at his reaction is very well written.

Fast forward a couple of months and Willow is back in Blue Beech and she is pressured by Hudson to tell Dallas about the pregnancy - I was really cross with Hudson & thought he behaved like an utter ass. I get that he was trying to protect his brother but he was not nice to Willow. When Dallas finds out , he is beside himself but does step up. My issue with this whole story was that I never felt like he loved Willow anywhere near as much as he adored Lucy. I always felt like Willow was very much in second place and if she had not become pregnant , I don't think they would have ever connected again after that night.

My heart broke for Willow. She had been treated so badly by her ex and then Dallas was still giving his heart real estate to his dead wife. When she visits his house, Lucy's things are everywhere as if she is still alive.
Seeing their relationship made you believe in love again. And that’s why I can’t get close to him. He’ll never give me that. You don’t get love like that twice in a lifetime.

And then again, there was an example of him not thinking of Willow first:
“What happened that makes you question our night wasn’t special?” His gaze is fixed on me, intense, and he settles his elbow on his knee. His free hand rests on my thigh. “You called me her.”

And the real problem for me was how Dallas just didn't seem to want to change his life:

I can’t forget her if I see her favorite pink top when I open the closet. I don’t want that to change. I don’t want to forget the woman I loved. I don’t know if I can move her things yet, but I have a feeling that Willow won’t be comfortable until I do.

The story is good with a couple of unexpected twists. The resolution is done well and the person who makes Willow give Dallas a second chance surprised me.

It really is a book where if a love for a dead spouse doesn't bother you , you will likely love this book. I just like my Hero to be totally focused on the heroine. For me, Willow was always second choice but the author makes it clear that Dallas can love them both but differently. Maybe I'm a bit shallow and possessive!!

“You can’t love me like you loved her.”
“You’re right. The way I love you is different than the way I loved her. I’ve fallen in love with you in different ways, for different reasons, than I did with Lucy....I’ll never stop loving the memory of her, but I can love you right along with it.”..."I loved her for as long as I can remember, but I don’t remember falling in love with her because I knew everything about her. This is something new to me. A different love but still love. You don’t love the same every time."

2 stars / 2nd read - 06/01/2024

I don’t hate the dead spouse trope, nor do I avoid it, but I definitely need it to be handled in a way where the hero or heroine (depending on the story), don’t feel like second best, or a second chance for one of the MCs to have a less miserable life after they lost the ”love of their life”.

This story did in no way convince that Dallas could ever actually love Willow the way he professed to love Lucy (his dead wife). Don’t get me wrong, they fell in love sure, but it was a nice, comfy love after loss kind of thing, not what I actually want and signed up to read about.

He kept describing how he loved Lucy more than air, more than anything and how indescribable his feelings for his late wife were. Lucy was turned into this person who is forever immortalised into some sort of sainthood after her death. And well, we never got anything close to that when it came to our heroine Willow. No big love declaration - a meagre ”I love you” - which wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t have that freaking flowery poetry about the dead saint.

This book is a very good example of how NOT to write the dead spouse trope. At the end of the day, our heroine is the one living in the present, the one who we actually wanna read about getting her HEA, not the dead lady who we read about in every chapter.

Don’t get me wrong, in real life this is a complicated and more nuanced situation but in my romance books I want a hero who although respects and cherishes the memories and relationship he had with his late wife, makes it clear that the love of his life is actually the heroine and what he feels for her is stronger and bigger than anything he’s ever felt..

Also, I absolutely loath when the late wife still has a hold over every interaction the hero and heroine have. I swear I barely read half a page of them having a convo when the discussion or someone’s thoughts (mostly the hero) go back to the dead wife.
And also the wife’s sister handing the heroine a letter from the freaking grave (to clarify - Lucy, the late spouse wrote it before dying) explaining to her “how Dallas loves and thanking her for loving HER family” which included a daughter cause the hero is a single dad. And after that letter the heroine decides to give the hero and their relationship a try. Bitch please.

Look, dead woman or not, it’s pretty fucking enraging to receive such a message.
Again, real life it would be a different situation(maybe) - I don’t wanna sound like a heartless bitch, but like, if I fall in love with a guy I don’t want to get a letter from his ex explaining to me all the ways in which I don’t know my boyfriend and how she knows him best, and then thanking me for being a placeholder basically. Like it’s a freaking temp position until we get into the afterlife.
And I feel like people make excuses for this whole situation because the woman is dead, but like in a way that’s worse, cause you can’t ever be better, love better, get along better with someone than a memory can.

Also, I truly don’t like it when the late spouse has to ”give permission” to the hero or heroine - in this case both, in order for them to be together. I hate those scenes. I wouldn’t wanna read a letter from a person who passed, that I didn’t really know assuring me she’s okay with me being with her husband. Excuse me? Why even include that, cause we as the readers sure as hell don’t need that permission from a lady we don’t know and tbh don’t care to know about.

I genuinely, honestly, wholeheartedly wanted Willow to have a good co-parenting relationship with Dallas, cause was a stand up guy, but in no way did I want him to be her HEA. This is a romance book, I want her to get the greatest love, not some watered down version of what Lucy got.

This opinion was also reinforced by the fact that Willow mentioned more than once that she would rather take a “broken” man like Dallas who is capable of love than an immature fuckboy like her exes. I feel like she really closed herself off from the possibility that she didn’t have to chose just from those two options.

It was enjoyable, nothing too angsty nor dramatic also not cheesy. I tend to compliment books by enumerating annoying things that I didn’t find in them as you may have noticed.

All in all, it will not be memorable and I will probably forget all about it by next week but it was a good pass time.

This started out so perfectly strong, then kind of turned into meh after that. Those words that Willow woke up to hear Dallas saying, were gutting, horrible and embarrassing for her. She jumped out of bed, and took off out of his house as quickly as possible, and moved out of town so she'd never have to see him again. Everything that happened up to that point was spectacular, and I thought I was diving into some angsty goodness. NOT SO! When Willow finally did come back to town and was forced tp admit her secret, Dallas was nothing but sweet to her. And Willow was nothing but annoying AF. All of her actions irritated the shit out of me. She never intended to tell Dallas he was going to be a father again, and no matter how much he tried to extend his olive branch, Willow just acted distant, cold and actually rude to him. I never really did warm up to her and that really put a damper on the entire rest of the story. I went ito this thinking this would be a grumpy. asshole-ish hero, who was going to be vindictive to the heroine because he couldn't move on from his dead wife, but this isn't that kind of story at all. This story is very safe for the easily triggered and somewhat boring.

I really wanted to love this book. I really did. it was different. I normally don't read single parent kind of novels but it was written by an author I really enjoy reading from. I enjoyed the writing. Just not the characters. that was a big problem for me. I didn't connect with either one of them and that's why I gave the rating of just 3 stars. Some might like this. Just wasn't for it.

Romance of the grieving widower father and the pregnant one night stand. Neither were very likeable.

She gets pregnant but won't tell him because she's mad. Then has to move to his small town, and it is always about him, his grieving and his dead wife.

Not fair to rate this one, but I'll try another book of hers.

I picked this up because I can be a sucker for a widow hung up on his dead wife, but I just can’t with another of these heroines that can’t handle a ONS. The book opens after Dallas and Willow have a drunken ONS. She awakens to Dallas pacing the floor freaking out because he hasn’t had sex since/with anyone other than his dead wife and needs a moment.

“Willow, please,” he pleads to my back with a strained voice while I fight with the lock.

“Don’t cry.” He blows out a stressed breath. “Just give me a fucking minute, okay?”

He’s staring at me in agony with the door handle gripped in his hand. For a split second, I’m stupid enough to think he’ll fix this. Stupid enough to believe he’ll say something, do something to make this right. But he doesn’t. He drops the handle, spreads both palms against the glass, and bows his head.

That’s it, no cruel rejection, no anger or blaming, simply a man freaking out saying to himself… What the fuck have I done? That’s it. They know each other well, she knows he’s somewhat recently widowed and still struggling, but she blames him to the point of HATING him and planning on never telling him about his child because he didn’t roll over, smile and declare his love. Pfft…

I kept waiting for him to turn into an asshole to warrant her anger and hostility or generate some drama, but he’s trying to be supportive and nice... so just because he didn’t/doesn’t want a relationship… he’s a dick??!! That generates ZERO feels for me.

Bottom Line- I’ve said it before… TWICE (The Child Between Them & Favorite Mistake) that I love seeing these women living their lives and not sitting on ice, but I HATE when the authors make them petty and immature to build drama. AKA- them having hissy fits because their ONS doesn't declare their love the next morning or want to start relationships… you know… cuz it’s a ONS. I tried to hold on to get to the “is she second best” drama, but it feels so childish, and I peeked at some reviews, and it sounds like Willow will hang onto this grudge while Dallas tries to be an adult about the situation, so I’m calling it.

2.5 out of 3

After being so pleased with the previous book I read in the Blue Beech series, Just Friends, this book was quite a letdown.
At one time Dallas and Willow, our two main characters, worked together for an actress, Willow as her assistant and Dallas as a body guard. However, Dallas quit before the book opened to spend more time with his wife and daughter. Tragically, about a year before the book starts, Lucy, his wife, dies of cancer. Dallas is still deep in mourning and finding it difficult to move on. But one night when both Willow and Dallas spend time together when they are in town for an engagement party, they drink some and then some more and end up spending the night together. Dallas is horrified the next morning at what he did the night before and feels like he betrayed his wife. Willow’s main reaction is anger towards Dallas because of his behavior and the fact he calls her by his wife’s name.

Fast forward in time and it seems there is an unexpected result of their one night together. Willow really has no intention of telling Dallas he’s going to be a papa again but she confesses to her boss and friend who engaged to Dallas’s brother so within the same night Dallas finds out too. Dallas is shocked but ready to be there 100% for Willow.

Now to why this book didn’t work for me. Willow is a brat, a real brat and I found it difficult to feel much sympathy for her. She spends a good deal of the book being angry with Dallas. He’s only been a widower for a year and he had been in love with his wife most of his life, childhood sweethearts and all that. But Willow seems to resent him for it. He really steps up to the plate but I find her quite immature and not at all sympathetic to his torn feelings. He is starting to care for her but he’s also cautious. I really liked the character of Dallas and really did not like Willow. Still, I have the entire series and I’m looking forward to reading more of them.

5 Stars!

There are books that just scream to me and pull me in before I even start. They draw me in and never let go... rooting themselves deep, knowing they are going to be special. THIS! This was that book for me. Epic in every single way.... and a complete surprise. Charity Ferrell might be brand new to me but I plan to rectify that fast because I've got vibes other books are out there and also holy hell am I in love with all of her words and her super dreamy characters..

Just One Night was a beautiful, sexy, emotional, angsty, second chance - slow burn romance that gave me all of the feels and completely stole my heart. Willow and Dallas took me on an incredibly deep journey that was complicated, hard, intricate, heartbreaking, passionate, undeniable, beautiful, and most definitely unforgettable in every single way. And as I moved through the pages with these two, I couldn't help but feel what they felt, losing myself in their complicated story, only coming up for air after they had devoured me whole.

Two pink lines changes everything for them. It was just one night...until it wasn't and everything became a mess. Dallas is a single, broody, sexy as sin daddy who is still grieving and hurting from the loss of his wife. And Willow? She's a strong, independent, fierce, loyal woman and totally torn on what to do or how to feel to how her life is changing. But one thing is for sure... every time they are together their connection is magnetic in an intoxicating way..

She's jaded.
He's broken.
Together they are a beautifully tragic mess.

Love isn't easy and it's surely not kind. But it's pure even in tragedy and comes when we least expect it but undeniably need it. It won't be easy and they will have to fight for everything but I can promise you that it's completely and totally worth it.

Read this book. Buy this book. Yell at the rooftops about this book. Believe me, you won't regret it.

I highly recommend this book.

My friends didn't love this one, but for me, it hit the sweet spot. It's been about two months since I last got lost in a solid 5-Star read, so I'm relieved 'Just One Night' came along when it did. Maybe it was perfect timing, with me in the right mood for it. Whatever the case, the stars aligned and I loved this book. I loved the writing, the characters and the story. It wasn't crazy angsty (my usual jam) or had lots of drama for that matter. It was "just right." I think I instantly fell hard for the writing and the main characters, Dallas and Willow. I can be very picky when it comes to 'dead ex' or 'unrequited love' stories, because I really need to be convinced the heroine is the hero's biggest love (soulmates), not a consolation prize or second best. Here, I was simply convinced love can happen more than once. A second chance at love. It's possible, it's just as real and beautiful. I thought it was incredibly heartfelt. I even appreciated the dead ex, Lucy. The letter she left behind for the woman Dallas was in love with...I cried. I got very emotional towards the end. I was happy too. Happy that Dallas, Maven (his 5yo daughter) and Willow, got their happily ever after. They deserved every bit of it. I'm definitely reading this again in the near future. Instant favorite!

This author has some weird obsession with children. Dead children, living children, unborn children, foster children, secret children... anything you can imagine, this series has it.
Just like it has these "broken" men, who need these women to love them and save them and fix them. Not kidding. If I got a dollar every time I heard "I'm broken" and "he's broken", I would be rich. Not to mention they were pretty much the same.

Sorry, I don't want to be upsetero, but I've read five of these books in a week (because they were easy to listen to during work), and the amount of hetero bullshit I had to consume was too much for me. It had it's moments, but it's time to move on.

When I read the first book in author Charity Ferrell’s Blue Beech series, I’ll admit the typos, misused words, and editing errors almost made me stop reading it numerous times, but there was something about the characters that made me keep reading. I finished that book (Just a Fling) and was happy I did and because I knew who the hero and heroine of book two was going to be and I was curious I jumped right into Just One Night. Let me first state that the editing was much better on this book and I quite enjoyed this story. It was a bit more angst filled than I normally like but it wasn’t contrived, the story actually warranted the amount of angst. Widowed single dad has a drunken one night stand with someone from his past who recently broke up with the only man she’d ever been with, the morning after is not pretty and their night is not without lasting consequences.

Let me just say this is not your typical “oops baby” romance, not by a long shot. Dallas Barnes lost his childhood sweetheart, his wife, his everything to cancer leaving him to pick up the pieces of his life and put on a brave front for their 5 year old daughter. On a rare night out with his daughter at his parent’s home he meets up with his sister and Willow, a woman he worked with prior to his wife’s illness. They spend time in the bar talking about their past relationships, they talk about the time they spent working together, and then they have a night of unbridled passion leaving Dallas to feel like he’s cheating on his late wife and making Willow feel horrible in many ways. I won’t lie, this wasn’t a pretty romance. Both Dallas and Willow spend a lot of time during this book figuring out who they are and regretting choices they made and things they said, but it felt real. Their situation wasn’t ideal and when you add in Dallas’s daughter Mayven and an unexpected pregnancy and things get really complicated fast.

Throughout this book both Dallas and Willow went through some very realistic feelings and while there was no doubting their physical attraction to one another, they had to put in the work to actually become friends and learn about each other. I’ll be honest in saying about 80 percent into the book, I wasn’t sure they would get their HEA, Ms. Ferrell wrote a realistic story of love lost, remorse, heartbreak, and finding love again and while at times hard to read I very much enjoyed this book.

An emotional roller coaster from the first page to the last, Just One Night was an outstanding romance.

1 ESTRELLITA.
NO me gustó!!

I was so intrigued about Willow and Dallas' story after reading Just A Fling and Just One Night didn't disappoint me.

Those two have a one-night stand that leads to a surprise pregnancy. Willow is reticent to give a chance to Dallas as he's recently a widower and she's been hurt by her previous relationship. She sees he's a great man and father to his daughter Maven, but she's also afraid to be second best to his late wife. She's keeps pushing him away, but it only makes him fight more to prove he's all in. I loved how Dallas is just so charming, sweet and caring. He's conflicted about his attraction to Willow and his growing feelings, but he's ready to take his responsibilities and be a father again. He needs to learn to heal and trust in love again. It's quite an emotional and lovely process to watch. This couple shares an intense chemistry that can turn to burning hot in a second.

The supporting characters bring a lighter tone with their humor and always present support. We get to see Stella and Hudson (Just A Fling), Lauren and little Maven. That girl is the sweetest! This single dad, surprise pregnancy romance was so pleasant! The Blue Beech Series is truly addictive! Now I'm ready for Lauren's book!

Dallas really hadn't been a widower for very long and also had a six year old daughter so he truly was a bit shook up after a one night stand with a family friend. "Shook up" or freaked out (whatever) but he made Willow really mad with his reaction as she laid in his bed that morning.

So, month later she realizes she has more reason to be shook up than just Dallas muttering that sleeping with her was a mistake. She meets up with him again and there starts their story.

Dallas is intense. You realize he's protective of those he loves and he loves hard. Willow is a bit more complicated.

Story seems real and they are likable characters with great secondary characters.

This was a cute story but I was not a fan of the MMC nor his brother. Like I’m sorry, to the brother, who are you to a tell this secret? Not yours to tell? And who the HELL are you to demand things from the FMC. He just barges in and demands that she change her entire life even though he’s not willing to compromise? And can’t get over his dead wife (which, fair, but it’s time to start moving on which he can’t and won’t do). Idk. The males in this book sucked. But otherwise I really liked the story and found it cute. I know it doesn’t sound like it but if you can set those points aside, it’s great! Lol

~ 4 Light in His Darkness Stars ~

Just One Night was an enjoyable read and I loved the storyline and most of the characters. I will say that I had trouble with the heroine. Her insecurities started grating on my nerves by the end of the book.

I have read almost all of Charity’s books and have loved all of them. I will say this wasn’t my favorite and that was because my connection with the heroine struggled. I thought the flow and pace of the story worked well. As with most of Charity’s books this book will draw on most of your emotions while reading. She writes stories with serious subject matter and I would say are pretty emotional reads. Now don’t get me wrong even though this is an emotional story it isn’t a complete downer….she did add some laughable moments and an adorable 6 year old girl who totally melted my heart.

Just One Night is a standalone novel told in Dual POV. I will say that when I started the book I kept feeling like I was missing something in the storyline and that’s when I realized this is a companion novel to her other book Make Me Yours. I am not saying that you have to read Make Me Yours first, because I didn’t and still enjoyed this book, but I do think it will help with some of the back story and connection between all the characters.

In this book we follow the story of Dallas and Willow. These characters are first introduced in Make Me Yours. Dallas is the older brother of Hudson (Book 1 Hero) and is a grieving widower, who is also a single father. Willow is the personal assistant to Stella (Book 1 heroine) and has come out of a long relationship that ended really bad. That was a very toxic relationship. Dallas and Willow are drowning their sorrows one night in a local bar in Blue Beech, Iowa, when one too many shots of Whiskey turn into a one night stand. What Willow wasn’t expecting was Dallas reaction the next morning. What happens when that one night stand turns into something completely life changing?? Can Willow and Dallas get past all their insecurities and hurt to find love again?? Read this story to find out.

I would recommend this book. I also look forward to what Charity gives us next.
