Wanted: Vampire's Assistant

Rate this book
She's scrappy and pure sunshine.
He's a 1,000 year old vampire.
Together they're magic.

Ever had life kick you in the teeth after it shoved you down the stairs?

Yeah, that’s how my day was heading.

And then I saw an ad in the paper that changed my life—Wanted: Vampire’s Assistant. Qualifications must include: loyalty, sturdiness, flexibility, dependability, fearlessness, intelligence, and please no applicants that are prone to temper or fits of terror.

Normally, I’d laugh at the absurd ad, but I emailed the prankster—Draven Leto, instead. People need jobs, Mr. Leto. Prank ads are not appreciated.

I wasn’t expecting to get a reply.

And I certainly wasn’t expecting for the ad to be invisible to everyone else on my floor.

Then a self-proclaimed vampire with a voice that could melt honey called and invited me to interview for the position.

And I accepted.

Like I said, life changing.

The writing is super clumsy in this one. It’s like the author has no idea how to progress relationships.
Everything is instant: insta-friendship, insta-lust, insta-problem solving.

The pacing is all off, and the author skips over things she needs to develop. Either, because she’s too lazy, or because she has no idea how to progress the plot.

The two main leads started out with the potential to have great chemistry but the whole thing was ruined by the terrible writing.

I try not to judge books by their covers. But this time the cover matches the contents.

Content:

Language: none that I recall.

Violence: mild peril. Bombs go off, shootings happen, there is fighting.

sexual: mild. some kissing, some snuggling. there is one instance of nudity in a non-sexual context.

When I first started this book I was pleasantly enjoying the fun little cozy-ness of the journey. It had an interesting premise, a little mystery surrounding the heroine, and an introduction to supernatural communities in an urban setting.

But the further I read the more I just asked, 'what is the point of the story?' There was little to no plot happening here. It's literally the main character meeting people and making friends immediately, and working for her boss that we all know she'll end up with. There is a slight side plot of who is trying to harm her and her vampire boss, but it was so haphazardly written in, it felt like a random tension device more than anything.

So, here's the thing. This story has great potential to be a fun urban fantasy series. Honestly, I was quite attached by the end to some of the characters that were introduced that it's probable I'll keep reading the series despite MAJOR issues with the writing itself. And the humor was fantastic. There were scenes I was laughing aloud at, and I don't do that too often.

But it is tragic. Just tragic, how poorly this book was written regarding transitions, major plot, and the romance. It just needed a loving line edit, a revision or two, and for the love of pete, some bridging sentences between paragraphs so I don't feel whiplash going from one scene to another. Nobody likes it when a book is onlyexposition, but it does need some! The flow kept getting interrupted by poor writing and it irritated me.

The romance and friendships are instantaneous, with little if any conflict at all, and anyone who has lived, ya know, life, knows things don't come that easily. Conflict is the meat of stories, and the character builder of life. The most conflict our heroine saw was trying to get the star elf not to use her shower. (which was both really weird and kinda hilarious when you got to know him).

I have never in my life been so tempted to contact an author and offer a free edit. The potential was there and it killed me to see this published in this raw form when it could have been great. I truly hope the author gets better with each series as she learns, and I'll look forward to seeing if there is improvement when the next book comes out.

Her friends are all dudes 🚩

This book has untapped potential. It’s disappointing that there really isn’t a plot - other than the broadest of Disney-fied Cinderella tropes. Mia is very poor and hardworking. Then, out of nowhere, a handsome billionaire vampire plucks her out of poverty and the rest of the book is a smorgasbord of food descriptions and non-stop partying. Every day is a pool party. Every night is a slumber party. Before during and after the parties, Mia eats and eats and eats and eats and eats. Everything she eats is the best thing she has ever eaten. Everywhere she goes is the best place she’s ever gone. Everything she does is the best thing she’s ever done. Every person she meets is her best-friend. And it just left me wondering: what’s the point?

This was a fun paranormal book with likable characters that I wanted to get to know more about as the story grew. I confess that Mia was often over the top with her delight at places and food but she seemed to calm down as the story progressed. I'm hoping that this is a series that will allow Rhys and Dice to have their own story as well as Mes and I'm hoping Virion will make more appearances.

This was a cute, quick read. There were parts I really enjoyed and parts that had me rolling my eyes a bit. It's definitely supposed to be light and funny, kind of like a fluff read, which is what I needed right now. I can see myself reading more of this series.

There were some editing errors that took away from the story but I still enjoyed it.

Gentleman Vampire

OMG, have you ever read a cozy mystery? Yea, they’re so sweet and clean and pure they make you want to gag? I usually don’t care for them, but guess what folks, I found a cozy vampire story and it was so fun!

Mia Durran had been on her own since she was sixteen and life had not been a bed of roses, but she worked hard for everything she has and went to business school and just the right time Mia saw an ad in the paper for a Vampire’s Assistant. Mia was so poor at the moment and she was actually hungry and it annoyed her that someone had taken up valuable want ad space for jobs, so she answered it and complained about his joke ad. The Mr. Draven Leto assured her that only qualified candidates could see the ad, so he asked her to show a neighbor and indeed only she could see the ad.

Mia did qualify for the job and while there discovered that one of the reasons that she qualified was that she was a supernatural being herself, an empath and possibly something more. The something more is some kind of weather controlling magic user and she even has a tiger familiar.

I don’t want to give it away because it’s cute and fun except for the part where someone keeps trying to kill them. (Oh, yea… that.) There will be a clean romance involved with absolutely none of the spicy stuff at all, this vampire is an old world gentleman vampire, thankyouverymuch. This was cute though, I really did like it for an easy read.

I wanted a cosy paranormal urban fantasy romance like K.M. Shea, and this one was free on my audio subscription, so I took a chance.

It was charming. A magic town on the coast in the PNW, found family vibes, and nice mix of action and romance. Some of the writing felt clunky to listen to, but I probably wouldn’t have noticed it reading a physical copy. I did have questions about the plot at the end, although it wasn’t substantially enough to dim my enjoyment.

I’m continuing the series because I’m very invested in 2 of the side characters whose stories we get next!

Content: light kissing; platonic kissing between a male and female best friend who are not romantically involved (because he’s a clingy elf who is affectionate)… felt kinda weird; magical creatures (familiar, vampires, elves, gargoyles, etc); accidental case of male nudity scene—no romantic or detailed

I’m angry at myself for not DNF’ing this book.
I wanted to like it, I really did.
The premise sounded interesting and I was really hoping for a well rounded rom-com.
Sadly, this book felt more like I was reading a ‘self insert’ story written by a young teenage girl in her paranormal/fantasy romance phase.
Which, no judgement, we’ve all been there. But sometimes some stories should just stay on Wattpad and Dreame y’know 😅

I had my first ‘I should DNF this book’ moment at 9% in but tried to push through the inconsistencies in the writing.
By 25% in I was having such a hard time believing in anything I read and about half way through I started questioning my life choices.

The FMC is supposed to be a personal assistant and yet there’s barely any content of her actually doing her job. I’m pretty sure in the entire book, her job and workload is spoken of 4 times.
You will, however, get at least one paragraph in every chapter describing a meal or drink FMC is consuming and if she’s not consuming something then she’s out and about NOT working.

Of course every time FMC leaves the house she’s in a life threatening situation where MMC just happens to show up and everyone just happens to know how to solve everything or save the day.
Note: Instantaneous activity seems to be a running theme in this book. Everyone is immediately attracted to FMC and becomes her BFF within three seconds flat. Every problem is met with an instant solution. Every strange occurrence has an immediate explanation and acceptance.
Want some examples? How about when Elf guy is just there, naked in her shower and wont leave, but its fine after all of 2 sentences even though he’s a complete stranger in FMCs private bathroom? Then they become besties and watch a movie together in the span of 5 minutes.
Or when the tiger shows up (which is black with white stripes, not to be confused with a white with black striped tiger) on the beach (because why TF not) they are concerned for all of .2 of a second before they get an explanation (from MMC who just shows up outta nowhere) and then they are cool with the tiger?ITSAFRIGGENTIGER!
No, wait, it’s a special tiger familiar that is magically bonded to FMC because of course she’s suddenly not a human, she’s a magical girl.

I should’ve stopped after that, but did I? Of course not 😅

FMC is supposedly 27 years of age and yet her character behaves like a high school aged girl.
Her inner monologue and dialogue is also that of a high school aged girl. It was painful to endure.
‘Le Sigh’ was used twice in one chapter as her inner monologue.
TWICE.
SHE IS 27 YEARS OLD FOLKS.

Did I stop after that? You bet your left booty cheek I didn’t.
Nope, I forced myself to read all 295 pages of this book. Pushed myself to endure every single moment of horrible storytelling, insufferable character development and agonising dialogue.
Hell, I even read the ‘sneak peek’ of book 2 at the end of the book.
Why? I honestly have no idea. You could hold me at gun point and I still wouldn’t be able to tell you why I did this to myself.
Maybe because I’m a closet masochist.

2.5 Starts off well enough but needs a lot of edits to tighten it up. Much too long of nothing happening. Some ‘drama’ that doesn’t lead to plot or character development so it’s just fluff. Not much world building but just introducing characters for little reason than to add them to series later. Meh. Some red herrings that I think doesn’t get resolved because the author lost steam over what to do with them.

The two stars are solely for the tiger!
The story started well enough and I like the quotes about Empaths being socially drained, feeling deeply and sensing other people's emotions. But it all went downhill from there. I am not invested in the story. In fact, I was, frankly, bored at around the halfway point. Mesmer is a redeeming quality and I loved Zion the tiger, but the rest of the story fell flat for me. I was not emotionally invested in the characters at all because the story felt surface level even though there were brief mentions of grief and a troublesome childhood/loss of loved ones.
All in all, the book read like it was written by a teenager. The story felt innocent, almost naive. For everyone that is looking for a lighthearted fluffy fantasy romance in pursuit of escapism, this is the book for you. However, I am not one of those people and I am actually disappointed by how flat this story was.
And RHYS. Ugh, he is pretty overbearing and keeps kissing Mia on the friggin mouth because he is "just an elf and they are affectionate blah" even though she REPEATEDLY told him not to do that. That is a major red flag and it is never adressed or resolved. Actually, it is seen as a funny quirk and a side effect of being an elf. No. Just no. That is illegal and no real friend crosses boundaries like that. Not that a stranger should, but this is especially dire.
And that ancient vampire guy that is still so immature and patiarchal even after 1000 years of being on this earth that he is jealous and threatens a doctor that is literally only doing his job?? I have no words.
Plus, instead of teaching Mia how to protect herself from HIS enemies, she is locked up in that prison mansion of his and "protected" by the men like it is still medieval times. She has no agency and spends her time eating food, gushing about her tiger, having fun with her bodyguard or creepy "best" friend. The rest of the time, she cheers on that ancient dude and lusts after him. She has no purpose, no life outside her job (that is never to be mentioned again) and her entire identity is her boyfriend. No. There is a great imbalance of power (him being ancient and attracted to a literal woman in her 20s and, on top of that, he is her boss ffs) that feels icky, but is never addressed.

Dice is my favorite character. I don't know whether that's because she doesn't buy into patriarchal BS or because the rest of the characters are so below mediocre.

I liked the "PJ's to work on Friday's" though.
This book could have been so great. Sigh.

I read this book following another that was heavy on the emotions and wanted to find something happy and easy to read to make myself feel better. This book was perfect for that! Whimsical, light, charming and well-put together. My only issue was the continuous non-consensual boundary breaking by a certain character and the fact that it was just brushed off a considered funny because “that’s who they are!” - that kinda weirded me out. The main character is in her late twenties and acts quite childishly at times, but it does make sense with her past. That, paired with the light tone of the book, sometimes made the book feel a little implausible and childish, but when you need that sort of storyline as I did, it works just perfectly :)

This is a cute and funny urban fantasy about a girl who finds out she is actually a supernatural and gets hired as the assistant for a very handsome vampire (you can see where that's going to go). The romance was light and adorable. This is not a very intense book and perfect if you are looking for a light and fluffy read.

holy hell in a hand basket.

I enjoyed Mia and thought she was funny and intense. I was sad about her past but it just made her a better person in my opinion. The story was really romantic and we never did get the scoop on their bond. I was bummed about that.

I think this book had potential. I loved the idea of the ad only specials could see! My favorite character and one I want to know more about wasn’t the main character. It was difficult for me to connect to these two. They were very surface. Someone else said everything was insta- love, friendships, etc. I agree! Everything was almost too easy!

I really did love this book. It was ADORABLE! I want the rest of the series right now. Mia is a great heroine, I really loved her. I liked Mes and Draven too. I can't wait for Mes's love story. Virion is interesting too and I hope that we see more of him. Rhys and Dice (whose relationship I am assuming is going to be Book 2's focus) is cute. I enjoyed Rhys's character and am interested to learn more about him. I also want to know what Dice's demon is. That book will be interesting. It will also feature Mia and Draven and I can't wait to learn more about their relationship and Mia's growing understanding of her power.

Part of me also wants Mountblanc's story as well as Tylen and Reece's story. Mountblanc seemed like a great guy and he was so kind to Mia. I want him to be happy. I also want Tylen to not be in pain. I hate that for him because he sounds like such a teddy bear.

I laughed for the whole book because Mia was so funny. I loved her personality. Such a truly interesting character with a huge heart! Draven is so kind and sweet. I really like that the author chose to bust the normal ideal of vampirism with him. He seemed like a much more realistic version of what a immortal vampire would be like. I liked all of the paranormal explanations in this book really. Everything seemed more relatable to normal humans which is good. It made the book seem more real and laid back and less like it was so out of our realm of possibility! Many paranormal books seem just unfathomable to us as readers and they feel so far removed from reality. This book made the paranormals way more relatable, which I appreciate. This author has quality writing, for sure!

Last - I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I would 100% recommend this book, series, and author. I liked the more conversational way that the author wrote this book in. It made it easy to understand and read. Paranormal books can sometimes be lengthy or drawn out but this one had just the right amount of information and intrigue. Very well written!

Cute

This book is about a girl who discovers she is a paranormal, and she gets a job as a vampire assistant.

I only got 77% through. I think most people would read this book and love it. I really liked a lot of the side characters. The gargoyle was a personal favorite. And I like how flushed out the main character’s personality was by the end. The writing quality could’ve used some work. Some of the sentences were cliché in my opinion, but most readers wouldn’t notice.

Now for my opinion. The beginning was absolutely fantastic, but for me, the plot and characterization became too shallow over time.

Mia starts out as something of a girl boss. She punches a guy, has been living on her own, and seems pretty self-sufficient. She’s never been able to make friends. Fast forward in the book, and she is unable to save herself ever (this doesn’t bother me, but it might bother some), she is suddenly very good at making friends, and she has a much more fragile personality. I don’t mind it, but it was an unexpected change.

I absolutely love the side characters, but the vampire lead doesn’t seem to have a personality. He is smart, attractive, and perfect (literally). One of the only unique details we get about him by 77% is that he is a very delicate eater, and he believes in traditional dating.

Another thing that didn’t work for me was the lack of planning. We were introduced to so many characters but saw very few of them more than once (the town police officer for example). The plot seemed to be that someone wanted to kill Mia. The only reason I really saw this plot being necessary was so that the vampire lead would need to rescue her frequently. I lost interest in the book, and I don’t know that I’ll ever finish it.

Omg this book sucked me in completely

It handles so many things that often bug me in other room com books. Like usually the whole story line is like two weeks. That's meeting, character arcs, falling in love, initial fall out and reunion plus handling whatever mystery or danger there is... Just always annoys me.
Dusty sets the story line up over several months. Giving it a more natural feel for the characters growing, falling into love an tying up the threat of the plot.
Her characters are lively, diverse and easy to understand.
Main characters are both very different and still some how just right for each other.
You can tell that this might be the first time she has written this type of story but by midway she has got many of the kinks worked out and I'm betting book 2 will be even better then this one.
I know we get to have Rhys an Dice in the next book but I seriously can't wait to see how love finds it's way to Mes, Reece and possibly a certain elf prince. Plus to see how being the king of vampires changes their world and shakes it up.
I'm hopeful that based on the avoidance of over used and basic plot gimmicks that the author will focus on making each love story and that books complications as unique and fresh as possible. Not just follow the same format for each new book. Let's make it fun, mix it up and see some new storylines that we dont see on the paranormal romance comes as much. Like unexpected child showing up, I would love to see Mes suddenly trying to fumble diapers, his reserves over relationships and how the rest of the cast would react to someone super cute but maybe super magical .. I love the humor this far and just want to see dusty lean into that more!!! 😂
Off to go read book 2

Thoroughly Enjoyable

I’m finding more and more novels that seamlessly and without long difficult backstories weave all the mythical creatures together in amazing settings. This book is no different. I felt drawn into Mia’s story by chapter 2. Her background is filled with losing 2 sets of patents and struggling through her teen and young adult years alone, awkward and often starving. But we meet her just as those fears are finally laid to rest and she catches a break. Draven Leto is a Master Vamp who introduces Mia to her Paranormal reality in the paranormal town of Moonhaven Cove. Mia is quirky and is kind of like an adult who expresses her childlike love of life and infects others. She quickly garners friends and protectors: Mesmer, Rhys, Dice, Zian, Henri, Reese, And Virion. Despite her being at the center of a secret plot to destroy Draven by constantly threatening her life she has brought together these amazing paranormals joy. I loved this story because I relate to Mia’s new personality. Her quirky is familiar to me. And she’s an accepting Empath, who is a constant reminder that your past makes you who you are, accept it, love yourself and those around you.
The action scenes are detailed and fast moving. Everyone working to help friends and strangers. The more moving scenes are packed full of love and laughs.
Who wouldn’t mind a life full of love and adventure? I know I do so I’m going to be a fan for awhile. I am interested in finding out if Mia stays the central character or if each novel delves into a different character.

It was a fun and easy read. All the characters were very likable, and Mia and Draven were very cute. However, everything moved so quickly, and some things needed more explanation. Many things that happened were told, not shown, but I felt like they needed to be shown. For example, when Mia suddenly had a date, I felt like that came out of nowhere. The reader was suddenly told that she had gone somewhere alone and met him. He asked her out, and suddenly, we were in that scene. It was too fast. Plus, he was such a great guy that I kind of felt sorry for him.

I had a lot of questions left towards the end. There wasn't a lot of clarity, and some things were just assumed, and there was no closure.

These were just some of the questions that I had:
- How did Draven's wife die?
- How old was Draven? He never told Mia.
- What happened to Mia's cousin? Why follow her around when he stole all her money? Draven said he was taking care of it, but we never know what happens in that situation.
- How did the world/town work? Was that town just full of magical creatures? Where were the humans?
- Why was Mia so stubborn when it came to going out when someone was after her life??
- In the beginning, Draven can sense Mia's feelings when he's so far away, but then once she meets him, those powers are nonexistent. Why?
- Draven is mentioned to see the future in his dreams twice. Those powers aren't explored or mentioned again. Why?

Overall, I would read again for an easy and fun read.

Mia Darren is determined to get her life together. She’s sick of fending off the weirdos that come into the diner, living off ramen, and hoping that her landlord doesn’t kick her out when rent money goes to finishing her business degree. When an ad appears in the paper for a vampires assistant, Mia is equal parts intrigued and amused. On a whim, she responds to the ad and finds herself thrust into the paranormal world. Her new boss is a vampire, her best friend an elf, her bodyguard a gargoyle, and her companion a tiger. She spends her time using her skills to help run the business while simultaneously fighting her growing crush on her boss. But that’s all in a days work right?

-Clean, feel good rom-com
-Boss x employee
-Age gap
-Paranormal
-Zero spice

This was a cute, fun read. The idea behind it was super intriguing and lent itself to be so much grander than it was. For me, it fell a little flat on the world building and character relationships. And although I don’t need sex scenes in my romances, I needed something. A couple chaste kisses really wasn’t cutting it for me in making the romance seem believable. If you’re looking for a really easy, light read this hits the mark. If you’re looking for something with depth and a really good story…maybe try something else. I will say this though- I’m a big fan of Draven. Give me a serious vampire with a cinnamon roll center and ‘I will protect you with my life’ vibes any day of the week.
