This is my first time reading a HMB but the plot interested me enough to try it. It was... fine, i guess? There wasn't a lot of conflict and I've read steamier sex scenes, but the characters were well... nice, i guess. They were also pretty reasonable about discussing the little deceptions/omissions until right towards the end. Cute enough story, dont know if I'd read another. Epilogue felt a bit cheesy but hey, it's a Mills and Boon: i was expecting a light romantic read and it served up fine.
Carrie Nichols delights with her enchanting small-town romance, A Hero and His Dog.
Mitch Sawicki has had a rough couple of years. An explosion had ended his military career and the former Special Forces soldier has lost everything leaving him facing an uncertain future. With his life in complete tatters, Mitch cannot see any light at the end of the tunnel – until he discovers that his beloved dog Sarge – whom he had thought had been a casualty of that horrific explosion- is alive and well and living in Vermont with single mom Aurora Walsh and her adorable young daughter. Mitch has come to Vermont to claim back what is rightfully his, however, fate turns all of his best laid plans into complete and utter chaos.
Eternally grateful to her uncle who had taken her and her brother in as teenagers when their parents had died in an accident and raised them as his own on his farm, Aurora has great plans for her family’s future. But if she wants to grow her business then she is going to need help, but when she had put out feelers for an extra pair of hands to help her out at the farm, she had imagined her new employee to be a high school student or a fellow young mom wanting some extra cash – she never imagined that a handsome ex-military man would come knocking on her door! Mitch is certainly more than up to the task of helping out at the farm, however, he has also awakened feelings deep within her which she had thought long-buried…
Rather than tell Aurora the truth about why he’s really at the farm, Mitch has played along with the charade and become her new employee. With all of his plans in disarray, Mitch’s objective to take Sarge and head back home has hit a wall. But that is the least of his problems as the more time he spends with Aurora, the more he finds himself falling for her!
Will this be the second chance Mitch had been hoping for, but had long given up on? Can he build a life for himself on the farm? Will he put down roots in Vermont with Aurora and her daughter? Or will she show him the door when he finds out who he really is?
Carrie Nichols never fails to steal her readers’ hearts and she has done it again with A Hero and His Dog. A magical romantic escape that ticked all the right boxes, A Hero and His Dog is a wonderful tale of second chances, new beginnings and falling in love that will make readers laugh and cry.
Aurora and Mitch are two fantastic characters it is impossible not to care about and root for as they embark on a delicious romantic journey infused with hope, humor and charm by the bucketload.
Contemporary romance fans who like witty, enjoyable and emotional small-town romances will not want to miss Carrie Nichols’ terrific novel, A Hero and His Dog.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Mitch and Aurora’s (Rory’s) story is a sweet and rather entrancing romance. Both have been burned in the past in the romance department, and both are trying to make a new start in life. Rory and her daughter have moved to her brother’s farm after her divorce. She is trying to build a new business that will support them and allow her to put money away for the future. She put a help wanted ad up in town because she is concerned for her uncle’s health, but never expected a man like Mitch to apply.
Mitch, a former Army Ranger, didn’t come to the farm to apply for a job. Instead he came in search of his K-9 partner who was also lost a limb and discharged from service just like Mitch. Before he can even reveal why he has come, Rory’s precocious and adorable daughter meets him at the door and totally disarms him, making him put aside his reason for coming and leading him to take a job instead. Mitch has spent the past year recovering and adjusting to the loss of his leg, being ditched by his ex and trying to find a new direction in life. Little Phoebe is a charming, inquisitive and adorable chatterbox that he doesn’t want to disappoint. She is also totally devoted to his ex K-9 partner, and the dog is just as devoted to her, even though he still shows affection for Mitch. As for Rory…she makes Mitch think of possibilities and the future. What will happen when she discovers his deception? Could they really have a chance at a happily ever after?
Little Phoebe provides a lot humorous moments as she keeps all the adults on their toes. The blooming feelings between Mitch and Rory are handled beautifully and this book left me with a great big smile on my face. This is book seven in The Small-Town Sweethearts series and it is Mitch and Aurora's story and it is definitely a must read. When Mitch was severely injured while overseas as a army danger and lost part of his leg it not only cost him the career that he loved but also his girlfriend who walked away from there relationship and then Mitch finds out that his K-9 dog Sarge could have survived so he decided to go and see for himself if it is Sarge and hopefully being him home but things don't always go as planned. Aurora is a single mom to her daughter Phoebe who is Aurora's life and she always comes first but it is always so busy on the farm and Aurora has no time for anything else so she could do with some help. When Mitch meets Phoebe and Aurora and gets to know them he feels like he is exactly where he is supposed to be in his life and there love for Sarge makes him realise that he can't take him away from them so what will Mitch do next, well you will just have to read this book to find out. This book takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions and I couldn't put it down and had to keep turning the pages wondering what would happen next and what the outcome would be for them all. This book shows you just what the veterans to through and how they deal with there injuries and civilian life after everything that they have lost but have to try and move forward with there lives. This book was written with so much care and compassion on a very difficult subject by this author and I look forward to reading more of her book's in the future.
Mitch is a wounded warrior, a Special Forces ex-soldier and amputee, looking to reclaim his former K9 partner after recently discovering the dog had survived the blast that took his leg. He goes to a small farm in Vermont where the dog had been adopted, hoping the owners would let him reclaim his partner. Sarge, his dog, has been living with divorced mom Rory and her 4 year old daughter for the past year, and Phoebe has really bonded with Sarge. When Mitch sees this, he is hesitant to say anything. Rory thinks he has come to apply for a job to help on the farm, and Mitch goes along with that as he tries to decide what to do. As Mitch spends more time on the farm, he finds himself attracted to Rory and totally under Phoebe’s spell. Both Mitch and Rory have trust and relationship issues, Rory from her divorce and Mitch from a broken engagement and issues about his missing limb. These complicate the growing attraction but also increase fear of involvement for both as they try to see if this can or will go anywhere. Precocious Phoebe is adorable—I can just see and hear her in my mind’s eye as I read, and I laughed many times through the book. This was an enjoyable read with well drawn characters and a believable plot. A good choice for a read around the holidays.

‘Mitch Sawicki’s foot itched. Not a problem—if he could scratch it. But he’d left that foot, along with the lower half of the same leg, behind in the Afghan desert.’ I’m sorry, but this was the first line of the book and I started laughing. Am I a horrible human being? Probably.
Anyway, I really liked this book. It was sweet and had a good enough pace to keep me interested in the story. My favourite character was Phoebe, and Sarge was pretty great too (although he really should have had more cameos as per the title).
Rory and Mitch’s relationship felt realistic enough considering their pasts; the ups and downs in their emotions regarding the other person helped in the progression of the plot. To be honest, I didn’t like Rory too much in the beginning, but over time, she grew on me, like she did Mitch. The sex they had was very down-to-earth. The author did a good job of writing about sex with an amputee—although I don’t know if that’s how it actually works or not, as I have no knowledge of this topic.
To the readers who want a fun, cutesy book about an army vet, an amputee dog, a single mother, and an adorable AF daughter who will not fail to make you smile with her innocence, this is for you.
This sweet, touching story takes us back to VT . Former Army Ranger Mitch Sawicki has suffered a lot of losses this past year. He was injured overseas, lost the career he loved after losing part of his leg, his girlfriend left him, and he believed his K-9 partner had died . When he sees a video in which a three legged dog looks just like his, he travels to Vermont to verify his belief and take his dog back. Whom he never expected to meet when he found the farmhouse where his dog was, was a precocious four year old and her beautiful mother, Aurora Walsh. Mitch was smitten with these two and when he sees his dog Sarge, he can’t seem to be able to take him away from this family. A job is offered and as he spends time with these two and Aurora’s uncle, Mitch realizes that his future might be with them. But what happens when lies by omission get in the way? Will they find their HEA or will their past intervene in their future? Another wonderful addition to the series. Also a reminder, that as individuals and as a nation, we need to do more for the returning men and women in the service who are willing to put their lives in danger in order to keep us safe. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
A Hero, a hero’s dog, and a princess in red boots!!! This is about Rory, Phoebe, Mitch, and Sarge, the dog. Mitch lost his partial leg and his dog at war, so he thought until he saw a video about a three-legged dog chasing after a thief. Immediately he knew that it was his dog and that he hadn’t lost him completely. Now he knows someone else adopted him and is on the hunt to get him back. He was determined, and nothing was going to change his mind, well, that was until the door opened and a little princess with red boots changed his mind! That was now her dog, and she loved him very much, so how could he take his dog back?
The story touched my heart as I couldn’t imagine the connection between a soldier and his dog, especially when they had each other’s back at war! Also, it is hurtful when a woman who claims to be in love leaves you because you are not 100% back, but that is the reality. Some people are shallow and not strong enough to fight for what they believe in because they are different on the outside.

A sweet small town romance that brings a recently discharged Army Ranger to Vermont looking for his K-9, Sarge. Separated when both were injured when their military vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb, Mitch believed his K-9 partner had died until he saw a YouTube video with what appears to be his Sarge.
The determined Ranger feels like he fell down a rabbit hole when an adorable 4-year old princess opens the door and captured his heart, then he meets her beautiful mother and he starts rethinking his entire life plan.
The characters and the storyline definitely captured my attention. Phoebe is an adorable kid who adds to the storyline, and had me chuckling frequently.
It would have added to the story to have Mitch’s mom, Linda, visit ‘on the page’ versus the mention in the epilogue that is just a 3 months later. As much as I enjoyed this book, I just wanted a little bit more emotional connection from it or with it.

This was a very sweet story but also a little bit sad.
This story centers around a guy named Mitch Sawicki. He is a Former Special Forces soldier. He got injured while serving overseas in the military. He has a mission to find the dog who survived the explosion that ended his military career.
Mitch ends up meeting a Vermont farmer named Aurora Walsh who has a young daughter. Aurora thinks Mitch is the extra pair of hands she desperately needs. Her young daughter sees Mitch as a welcome addition to their family. Stage who was his K9 military partner is also a welcome addition to their family who also lost a leg while serving in the military along with Mitch. Mitch didn’t know that along with trying to find his partner that he was also looking for a family. I liked Aurora and her daughter and how they were with Mitch. I also liked how Mitch was with Aurora and her daughter. This was a very sweet love story and it was a bit spicy 🌶️. I really loved reading this book.
A wounded dog, a wounded hero, a charming little girl, and a skittish mom unwilling to trust again — when you bring those things together in a well-written, relatable romance you have my immediate attention. A Hero and His Dog tells the tale of Mich, a former Special Forces soldier who was wounded in combat completely changing his life, his dog Sarge who he had been told had died during the attack, and a family unaware that this man and dog had been separated as they brought Sarge into their lives as their forever companion, not caring that he isn’t as whole as other dogs.
Mitch is searching for his dog after learning that Sarge survived the attack that wounded them both. Is it his fault that he was dealing with the changes in his life and blindly believed what he’d been told? No, of course not. But Mitch is taking that blame to heart as he tracks down his dog and considers only having his friend, his companion back at his side. What he discovered is that Sarge is just as needed right where he is now. And Mitch cannot disrupt this little princess in pink’s world by snatching back his dog.
Aurora makes an assumption when Mitch arrives at her farm. She believes he’s there to apply for the help-wanted position that is desperately needed to keep the farm operating. Yes, it’s odd that Sarge seems overjoyed to meet this stranger… but then Sarge loves everyone. She’s recently gone through a divorce that has shattered her trust, she’s facing difficult choices on the farm, and this man seems the answer to those needs. She didn’t expect to begin to fall for him, to trust him, or even to love him — and when the real reason he showed up at the farm is revealed, well, Rory goes back behind her protective wall. Watching this couple go through so many emotional moments was a deeply moving journey. I loved them and their story.
A Hero and His Dog will put you on an emotional roller-coaster and eventually heal those feelings far better than ever before. If you love a romance that is heart-wrenching, believable, and relatable then you’ll want to grab this one right now.

This is a moving story of a wounded hero, his wounded dog, a nervous mother and a precious little girl who have a journey to get just where they should be. Former Army Ranger, Mitch Sawacki, was injured overseas, along with his K-9 Sarge, who didn't make it. He thinks that until he sees a video of what he instinctively knows is Sarge and goes in search of him. He finds him at the home of an adorable little girl in pink and red, and a mother who's still hurting from her divorce. When Phoebe answers the door, Mitch is smitten with her and her unique personality. Aurora assumed that he was there for the job, so she hired him and the rest is history. Not quite. How can he take Sarge away from the family who adopted and obviously loves him? I loved this story and it serves to remind us just how much we owe the men and women who keep us safe as a nation. Beautifully done!
Special Forces Mitch loses part of his leg and his best friend K9 Sarge in battle but when he finds out that Stage survived and is living with a family in Vermont he takes off to find his friend only what he finds is single mom Aurora and her sassy daughter Phoebe. Aurora is looking to hire someone to help with the farm while her brother is still serving in the military so she hires Mitch. Mitch could not see himself taking Sarge away from the family that clearly loves him so he stays to help with the farm and he is the one getting help he never knew he needed along with a sweet relationship with Aurora and Phoebe.

Our wounded hero has believed for over a year that his K-9 partner was killed by the same explosion that wounded him, then one day he finds a video online that leads him to believe that the dog is still alive. When the hero finds the dog, he also finds more than he bargained for in the form of a precocious four-year-old, her mother and adopted grandfather. There is also small-town nosiness and an ex-husband to contend with. All of this leads to a sweet story. I loved the little girl in this book.

Love a small town setting for a romance. Great characters to follow along on this story. Like the military aspect of a soldier that has to work through some issues to find love and has his heart stolen by a pint size princess. Really enjoy a good romance.

'A Hero and his Dog' was a poignantly written book. Its fascinating plot was focused on a recovering injured Army Ranger returning to civilian life while trying to track down the dog that he was partnered with in Afghanistan but had lost contact with him as he was convalescing from his injuries from a year before. Mitch, the veteran and a protagonist, encountered a family consisting of Rory (Aurora) and her daughter Phoebe who had adopted the said dog. Phoebe added comic relief to this narrative. One thing led to another and Mitch and Rory tried to reach their HEA. I really liked the narrative. I received a copy for free, and I am voluntarily giving my honest review.
This is a sweet and heartwarming story that is a touch emotional. I enjoyed every bit of this small town romance. The story is about a wounded warrior, a dog that saved him, a single mom and adorable little girl. This one really tugs at your heart strings and also makes you laugh. Mitch is on a mission to find the special dog that was his side kick in Afghanistan. When he finds Sarge he also meets Rory and her daughter Phoebe. They adopted the fun loving dog. This is such a great story!!
More dog and less Phoebe, 4yr old, is one thing I would change about this book. The first chapter was the best one. [This is the second book I have read in this series .. won’t be reading anymore.]
Sweet. Emotional. Haunting. Nichols pulls at the heart with breathtaking tale of love, loss and courage. A Hero and His Dog is a tale of second chances that celebrates love from every angle. From the painful to the triumphant, Mitch and Aurora are unforgettable.

A super cute book featuring an army vet, a dog, a single mum, and her cute daughter. A very quick read, easily able to be finished in under an hour, for those who are time poor or who are looking to fill a small spot of free time in their day.
