The Grand Men #2

The Grand Ruin: Lance & Scarlet, Part One

Rate this book
Being stood up on your birthday sucks.
It sucks even worse when it's your brother's egotistical best friend and CFO who delivers the blow.

My first encounter with Lance Sullivan had me crying in an elevator as I clung to a stranger for comfort.
On our second, he stormed my dress fitting pretending to be my husband.
And by the third... I'd made the bastard smile.

I do not have time for a man in my life. Not when I already have two stubborn men at the centre of my world who can barely show up for me. But Lance is showing up, and did I mention he has the most beautiful green eyes I've ever seen?

Lance is fun to mess with. I just need to convince him to drop the 'your brother will kill me if I touch you' act, especially when his mouth has already touched the parts of me that matter...

One summer.
Two hearts.

And a promise... to not disappear on me.

This is the best five-star book I’m going to tell you not to read - not yet at least. Because if you read it, you’re going to be heartbroken. Then you’re going to be mad at me.

Orrrrr, you can read it, yell at me, and we can be broken hearted together until the second part of this story comes out.

📔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼: The Grand Ruin, part one of Lance and Scarlett’s story in the Grand amen universe.

📚𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Brother’s best friend, forbidden romance, angsty romance.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Scarlet meets Lance, who works as part of her brother’s company. What starts as friendly banter quickly morphs into a secret relationship, which overcomes deep ups and downs as they navigate time and the space between them.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: Ok, so if you’ve been with me since I recommended The Promise Duet, you already know where this story is going. But let me tell you, you don’t know the emotional turmoil you go through to get there.

For those of you who haven’t read any of JC Hawke’s work, start there and work your way forward. (P.S. see my note below…)

I missed a huge context clue when it said this was part one of their story, so when I got to the end and was crying through the last few pages, I was probably more wrecked than I should have been. But The Grand Ruin stood up to its name and demolished me.

It was great to delve deeper into Scarlet and Lance’s characters. She turned out to be so much more than I thought and I really, really felt for her. And Lance was absolutely perfect. Cocky and independent, but when Scarlet comes alone he’s completely undone. Like… read this…

“𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱, 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗿. 𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲. 𝗦𝗼, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱.”

Cue me fainting with happiness. It also had just enough of Hawke’s British drama style. It’s all over the top, and I love it.

Bottom line, this is an excellent next chapter. Lucy and Elliot’s story was epic, but turned out to be just a breather in between Mason and Nina and the heart break that is Lance and Scar. But it has me screaming for the next part NOW. And I can’t imagine how emotionally taxing that will be.

📝 𝗔 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲… You’ve got to start this one from the beginning. Start with Grand Lies and Grand Love, Mason and Nina’s story. You’ll love the series much better if you get the whole story.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 3/5 🌶🌶🌶

Grand Ruin - JC Hawke ARC

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️

No one writes an attentive male lead quite like JC Hawke.

He’s definitely going in our top 10 book boyfriends.
Lance Sullivan you have a bit of our hearts ❤️

We feel like we’ve been waiting for this book for so long and my word it did not disappoint.

Lance and scar’s love story is amazing so many emotions and it’s so nice to piece things together from reading all the other books.

There were parts of the book that made us cry and you just can’t help but feel for them both especially in certain parts we did shed a tear 😢

We just didn’t want this book to end so we read it extra slow 🙈

JC Hawke we beg of you please don’t make us wait too long. We need book 2 like right now.

Everyone if you haven’t read JC’s books before then go and read them now.

Highly recommended

Happy reading

Excuse me while I throw up!! That’s my review, don’t expect more from me.

I’m kidding but what the fuck!!!! Loved and hated every minute of it. I love Scarlet and Lance but I’m officially bald from pulling out all of my hair.

The cliffhanger? Sedate me.

Full review to come when I can breathe.

At the time of this review, this book holds a 4.24 rating. This is a remarkably high rating for something that reads more like a sociology study than a romance novel.

Now, let me explain myself.
This book fails at every single thing it sets out to do. And it fails spectacularly. It's actually kind of impressive how thoroughly it misses the mark.

Plots. Characters. Chemistry. Nothing is well executed. Nothing holds up.

Let’s start with the main character. Scarlet is a twenty-eight-year-old woman who is infantilised by quite literally every single person in her life. And to be fair, the narrative itself isn't much better. Despite being nearly THIRTY-YEARS-OLD, she displays the social maturity of someone half her age. Her world is awfully small: her brother, her brother's driver, her brother's friends, her brother's coworkers. That’s it. She has no job, no friendships of her own, not many hobbies, and barely any idea what's going on in the world.

The book presents her as the embodiment of passive and nurturing femininity. She's endlessly forgiving and incapable of anger or resentment. She drifts through life in flower-patterned innocence while the people around her leave her and hurt her. Worse, she greets each offence with quiet understanding. She’s not a protagonist so much as a hollow symbol of goodness.

Now, all of this is framed within the context of grief and sacrifice. Scarlet gave up her career to care for her sick father. But this is so poorly executed, it quite literally borders on absurd.

And to be clear, this premise can work. Earlier this year, I read The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center, which deals with a pretty similar scenario. That main character also puts her life on hold to care for a dying parent. The main difference is that in Center’s novel, the character is three-dimensional. She has a voice. She stands up for herself. She struggles, she questions, she grows. I repeat, she is allowed to grow. Scarlet, in contrast, is simply static.

This lack of depth isn’t exclusive to Scarlet though. Actually, you'll be happy to learn that it extends to nearly every other woman in this book. Where Scarlet is gentle, selfless, and idealised, most of the other female characters are her complete opposites. They are self-interested, volatile, manipulative. They are greedy and attention-seeking. They're nasty nasty women. And crucially, they’re never given the same benefit of emotional complexity that’s extended to the male characters. The men are flawed but layered. The women are just… bad.

It’s not subtle either. These women are not characters, they’re caricatures.
It feels like this story relies entirely on what feels like a watered-down version of the Madonna–Whore complex (not in the sexual sense, but in how it divides women into two extremes): the emotionally restrained, nurturing "good girl" who gets stepped all over but endlessly forgives and loves, and the volatile, self-interested women who exist only to betray or blackmail.

Needless to say I did not enjoy myself.

Onto the romance portion of this book. "Romance" is quite generous a term to describe whatever is going on between those pages, but I'll give it a try.

In a romance novel, I typically expect to feel yearning, anticipation, warmth. I want to see a relationship built on friendship and trust. I want to root for the couple, I want to believe in their connection. I want to at least believe that they like each other. None of that happens here.

This whole story reads like glorified lust at first sight. The book seems to assume that physical proximity and intense eye contact are enough to constitute a love story. They’re not. There is no tension, no progression. And quite frankly, when the inevitable love declaration arrives, it feels unearned. It’s hard to believe these two are in love, let alone that they carry said-love through the next seven years of turmoil.

I think I’ll stop here, because I truly only have bad things to say, and I’ve reached my mean quota for the day.

𝐀𝐑𝐂 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰

Living up to its title, this did in fact RUIN me

Every time Jess makes us wait, every time she releases a new book and every time it hits my Kindle I fall a little further in love with this exquisite world she has created

"𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭"

Taking us back to the same timeline as Nina and Mase's story, Lance and Scarlets story can only be described as heart wrenching, complicated and perfectly imperfect and it couldn't have suited them more. It was great to revisit this time period but from a different perspective

Their story is the epitome of she fell first, he fell harder and I plummeted along with them quite happily in fact I think I'm still falling

I can't wait for part two. Part of me hopes I have enough time to put myself together to read it before it comes and the other part of me wants it yesterday

Thanks, as always, Jess not only for my ARC but for making the start of Lance and Scarletts journey an outstanding one

I feel dead inside rn 😭😭😭 RTC

It took me quite some time to process and think of how I could possibly explain with the right words how much I adored this book. I don’t think I could express properly how much I LOVE this series. It’s everything to ME. JC did a phenomenal job, their story made me laugh, cry, get frustrated; it just put me through a lot of emotions and I couldn’t be happier

Phew okay let’s start with Lance.
We first met him in Grand Lies and Grand Love, tbh I hated him and wanted to punch his guts….I was super hesitant to get to know him but I’m glad I did because I’m in awe of his character. You get to understand why he is the way that he is and I just wanted to protect him at all costs just like he does with his loved ones. Oh boy when Lance loves you he loves you HARD. It definitely put things into better perspective.

Scarlett, she is be incredible.
There isn’t a thing I would change about Scar. She is perfect. I went through ALL the emotions with her. I loved who she was before Lance, with Lance and after Lance. My heart absolutely broke for her and I cannot wait to see their story continue in book two. There is so much more I want to write about her but don’t want to accidentally spoil anything so I’ll stop myself here.

Lastly just read this series and I hope you love it just as much as I do.

Ok. Where to start. I'm still kinda processing this amazingly beautifully written story.
With each new book, my favourite couple changes. But Lance and Scar have my heart. There was so many stunning and heart wrenching and simply beautiful moments I express what a ride this book is. It was so good to be back with this group. The emotions, the feels, the pain, friendships and straight up love and care and spice is on point. One of my top reads of this year Jess
💜. Desperately waiting for part two 💜

Infinite stars. I’m in literal awe…. speechless. My emotions are all over the place, but here comes my attempt at a review!

The Characters….
LANCE, MY SWEET ANGEL BABY, SULLIVAN 💜
Give me a man who NEEDS physical touch the way this man does. Give me a man who would drive an hour out of his way, just to sleep with me and hold me so that I’m not alone like this man does. Give me a man who time and time again chooses me, respects me, cherishes me, protects me, and loves me as deeply as Lance does with Scar. I will never complain and I will be the happiest woman alive. I was just so giddy reading his POVs, because every time, his sole focus was Scarlett. His every thought, was Scarlett. Scarlett is the beginning and the end for this man, and JC made me fall so hard for this fictional man. Idk how I’m ever going to be okay again. The raw emotions this man felt, the things this man has been through… I just wanna hold him, and love him. He’s life personified.

SCARLETT, “BABY LOWELL”, LOWELL🪻
I love Scar so much. I love her strength, I love her resilience, I love her love of life, I just love her. She was such a unique and complex fmc.. I never once, questioned her or how I felt about her. For her to give up what she did, in order to care for her father.. I’m in literal awe of her. She was such an amazing and truly fantastic fmc. One of my favorites I’ve ever read. Besides that.. I’m just saying, don’t think all of the innocent girlies out there are as innocent as they look.. Scar has a mouth on her 🥵 and she was bringing Lance to his knees with the things she would say to him. My mouth dropped to the floor several times lol.

The Plot….
I won’t give away the story, since it’s so connected to the other books. But what I will say is the storyline had me so invested the entire time. It was so well paced and I didn’t find any flaws with the speed in which everything developed. I’m addicted to this over-arching plot line, and I was super sad at the close of the book, because I just honestly want more!! I need Part Two like my next breath.

Overall….
I honestly think you should read this series. Each story in this series is so good, and each of them are different than the last while also connecting the plot points seamlessly between each of the books. All of the characters involved in the stories are so interesting and you’ll find yourself wanting their stories too. Hopefully Charlie’s is next, cause I would die without his story.

I binged this entire series in about 3 days whilst on holiday and all I can say is wow, I am not ok at all after that. I couldn't even see the last couple of pages as I was balling my eyes out. I felt the emotion through the pages. I knew what was coming as this was set on the same timeline as The Promise Duet, but did it hurt any less? No if anything it hurt more. 🥹

I didn't know how I would feel about Lance after the previous books and Mase and Elliot were tough ones to beat, but Lance stole my heart that's for sure.

Scarlett is Masons sister and Lance is his best friend. I just loved their chemistry and banter, the scene at the sex shop had me laughing out loud! Honestly, the way these two made me feel can't be put into words. I can't say too much about the plot without giving things away from The Promise Duet. So all I'm saying is please just read this whole series ASAP. I can't wait for Jess to repair our broken hearts with Grand Rise. We need the HEA so bad!

The friendships in this series are perfect. The way Jess writes is addictive and shes so clever how she's linked this series. I'm still not over this, it still hurts now!

All the damn stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ohhh how I’m so glad to be back in this world again 🥹🫶🏻

The Grand Ruin quite literally, ruined me. I have been an emotional mess from the moment I started reading it and I’m still a mess…I need the second book right this second gahhhh
Lance and Scarlett’s story is raw, real and heartbreakingly beautiful.

Let’s summarize a bit here m’kay??? So Scarlett left school to move back home and take care of her dad. Her dad and brother don’t have a good relationship at all so he never helps out and avoids their family estate at all costs (rude but I still love you Mase 🫶🏻)
Ok so anywaysss. It’s Scarlett’s birthday and she’s supposed to meet her brother but on her way up to his office, she gets stuck in an elevator with a hot guy. The hot guy ends up being our mmc whom also happens to be her brothers best friend/business partner.

I was not expecting Lance to be such a cinnamon roll mmc (ok don’t get me wrong he’s still an extreme alpha a-hole) but there is so many layers to this man and the way he treats Scar is just 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹❤️❤️❤️❤️

Scar is by far the sweetest and kindest FMC, she is unbelievably loyal and committed to the ones she loves and cares about. She just has such a big heart and puts everyone before herself and I just wanted to reach into the book and give her a big hug!!

This book is everything and more. It’s NEXT LEVEL SPICY….seriously….
It’s extremely emotional and angsty (get your tissues ready) and just so addicting from start to finish.

This was a masterpiece of a book, WOW. First of all, what an amazing thing, to go back to the original timeline of Nina & Mase, and watch everything unfold from Lance & Scar’s perspectives. It was truly brilliant & brought a new layer to all of the characters in the Grand group.

Scarlet…her story is just so incredible. One full of grief, but also hope and happiness. She truly is a light in the dark & the irony in that is not at all lost on me. She’s been cooped up for so long caring for her ailing father & when she finally allows herself to have a bit of fun she gets so much more than she bargained for, but continually pushes it away. She’s the epitome of deserving the world but she just can’t seem to accept it.

Lance’s story is also full of grief & pain. We love a broken hero, and he really embodies that phrase…the broken especially, but her hero above all. His family straight up sucks (seriously b*tches all around, my God, I hated them). For having gone unloved for so long, the way that he loves Scarlet is really beautiful.

OF COURSE we get our crazy girls nights, and our steaming hot spice, and our hilarious moments as well. Wouldn’t be a JC Hawke book without a mention of a Tuesday (#iykyk 😉🍑). This one will make you laugh, cry, and feel all the feels. I loved it endlessly, and the title is so appropriate, because I truly am ruined until part 2.

This book hurt so good. With my hand on my heart, Jess writes the most astounding, poetic and heart-wrenching love stories. Her delivery is incredibly powerful and I connect with her characters so strongly. The Grand Ruin is part one of Lance and Scarlet’s story, with overlapping timelines from previous books in the ‘Grand’ universe. Despite knowing what transpired between them, it still hurt to see them go through what they did. Jess completely destroyed me with this book, but the pain was worth it.

Lance and Scar met one another by chance when she went to meet her brother for lunch. The attraction was instant and you could tell there was a spark. The snappy banter between them quickly turned into flirty chats, and slowly blossomed into a beautiful connection.

Since Lance’s dad passed, he took on the responsibility to look after his family. Not only was his efforts not appreciated, his mom and sisters screwed him over big time. Safe to say he had little faith in women. However, Scar was not the spoiled princess he thought she was. She was wise beyond her years. The most devoted, resilient and selfless person he had ever known. She would do anything for her loved ones, even if it meant putting her life on hold. Never in a million years did Lance anticipate falling for his best friend’s little sister.

Their chemistry was palpable. Their passion was unmatched. She fell first and he fell harder. Scar was an absolute ray of sunshine, bringing light to the darkness he lived in for years. The possibility of love gave Lance hope. His relentless pursuit convinced Scar to give him a chance. To give them a shot at a life-altering love.

Lance and Scar’s story was imperfectly perfect. Their journey was messy, complicated, painful yet inspiring. They were everything I was hoping it would be and more. I loved the love they had for one another. I truly enjoyed every single moment reading this book, not only the achingly sweet parts but also the brutally tragic bits. Jess, I could tell how much time, effort and tears you put into doing them justice. It showed. It’s brilliant. You should be so proud!

As one of my most anticipated reads I was so ready for this book or so I thought, man Jess managed to pull out every emotion possible and I was t truly ready for the heartbreak and trauma that she was about to put me through. The trauma was real I felt every single emotion of each character and I was totally pulled in and immersed in the world Jess has created and I didn’t want to come out.

We have met both Lance and Scar in Jess’s previous books and this one overlaps with Nina and Mason’s duet and so we have an idea of what is going on but finding out from Scar and Lance how their love and relationship developed honestly we were kept in the dark, they have an amazing love story of turmoil and longing that they have kept from those they are closest too or so they think. The relationships Jess has created between both the friendship groups and the MCs makes this story real and life like I wish I could jump into their world and 100% I could image every scene perfectly.

Lance is the perfect mix of grumpy and swoony making him too boyfriend material and Scar is sweet but not innocent making these two the perfect match with their banter they are soulmates.

We are left in a cliffhanger but i believe Jess has left it at the perfect point, where we are all heartbroken longing for their HEA. Whereas this is a standalone duet I would 100% recommend reading Jess Promises duet before reading this one as the stories overlap.

How to even begin reviewing this book, I could be here for days! Firstly if you haven’t read the other books by this author I encourage you to, as they all follow the same group of friends/people and how they are each linked to one another, with numerous relationships within the group. It’s one heavy romantic smut fest and I’m obsessed.

But on to this book and Lance and Scarlett’s love story. We get hints at their budding romance in the other books but now it’s time to solely focus on them. I fell in love with Lance and the both of them numerous times throughout the book and made me feel all manner of emotions. The ending I was a sobbing mess as the cliffhanger is completely heart breaking and I’m in need for book 2 so J C Hawke can put both mine and Scarlett’s broken heart back together again.

A brilliant set of books that I have re read over and over. Highly recommend

The Grand Ruin - ARC
Tropes: Found Family, Brother's Best Friend, Soulmates, Billionaire, Broken Hero

This book is a must read! Quick little side note... Please start from the very beginning! Start with Nina and Masons story in Grand Lies and Grand Love! Trust me it will be worth it!!

This book will make you feel all of the emotions! When I tell you I was a wreck (in a good way) throughout the entire book with all of the emotions! It will leave you right where it needs to and once you get to the end you will be needing the next book immediately! I am still processing the entire thing myself!

I love Lance and Scarlet. They have my heart and the spice and tension between them is everything! We get to see them grow together and struggle together! I can't wait for part 2 to see what will come next!

The Grand Ruin - JC Hawke

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Grand Pact was my favourite book of last year and this has just become my favourite this year. Lance Sullivan you have my heart 💜

As I write this, I’m ugly crying.

“If it’s not life-altering—messy, crazed love, capable of tearing me apart—I don’t want it.” I lift my chin, brushing my lips to his. “I hope it leaves me in ruins because, Lance, your love’s worth hurting for.”

If this quote doesn’t sum it up, I don’t know what will. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Roll on part 2!

I felt so lucky to get an ARC on this book as I love the J.C. Hawkes other books. I did not think a couple could beat the relationship between Elliot and Lucy but she really did with Lance and Scarlets' story. As usual, it had me laughing out loud and crying the next. I am just not ready to wait for the next book, I need more of their story! It also made me love Charlie even more than I did which I didn't think possible. It is a must read!

Was so excited when I found out I received my first ARC for this book! Excited is probably an understatement, I was ecstatic!

The prologue already had my heart breaking, I couldn’t wait to dive into Scar and Lances story. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. I’ve come to love all of the characters even more since this is now the fourth book with everyone.

Spoilers ahead

First off: the playlist 💜💜, all of the songs fit these two so well, I kept it on repeat while reading. The banter between the two is just simply 😩ugh. Seeing the events that happened in the grand duet is a fresh point of view and a different look on things! The letters from Scars mom were absolutely heartbreaking 💔 but so beautifully written and just a glimpse into who her mother was. The pull between these two truly shows how much the care for each other. Knowing how things end just made it even more heart wrenching to finish💔. Part 2 can’t come soon enough 😩💜💜.

How can a book be so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time?? That’s because J.C Hawke wrote it! Lance and Scarlett’s story destroyed me. These two NEED each other. I love how Scar pulls out the bear in Lance. Lance hasn’t been my favorite in the Grand Men series book but he redeemed himself in this one!

I read this ARC in one setting! I couldn’t put it down and now I’m begging for the next book in the series. This book hurt but it was done so beautifully that it was worth the pain! This book is heavy but almost poetic in nature. These two have been through it and I’m so glad their banter turned into more.

Lance and Scar are 100% each other’s missing puzzle piece and their story is complicated but beyond beautiful. I think this is my favorite Grand Men series book yet!!

Lance Sullivan. Scarlett Lowell.
Their story, correction their love story (so far) is so beautiful. A complicated, imperfect mess that suits them both so well. This book is the definition of she fell first he fell wayy harder. It is not often that you get a dual pov book that allows you to delve into the mind of a man falling in love but JC Hawke manages to give us that time and time again with this series!
Lance has spent a majority of his life not truly knowing what being loved is like, after being rejected by his “family” (you’ll understand the quotations when you read the book) time and time again for what they deem as his failures, he has had no choice but to become a hard shell that only a selected few people are allowed to see past. Never in his wildest dreams did he think that the person to shatter that shell and find his heart would be a lavender haired beauty. Also known as Scarlett Lowell, aka his best friends little sister. Through meeting Scarlett he allowed himself to be vulnerable, to love and be loved. And by god does he know how to love.
Scarlett is a woman who is the definition of selfless. She has always put others first, putting her own life on hold to look after her dad and to ensure that he is never alone. However that came at the price of her own loneliness, something that she thought she was hiding well in the darkness. But there was one person who saw her and shone a bright light into the shadows and allowed her to shine bright. Like the sunshine she truly is. Meeting lance taught Scarlett that it’s okay to put yourself first, that the only way to have a life is to experience it by living. She didn’t want to fall in love, she was afraid of how much it would hurt when she fell but what she didn’t expect was for Lance to catch her and then fall right alongside her.

"The Grand Ruin (Part One)" by J.C. Hawke is a book I devoured months ago, and I can't help but still think about Lance and Scarlett all the time. This book has all the tropes I love, from brother's best friend, grumpy/sunshine, secret relationship, heartbreak, and an agonizing cliffhanger that left me yearning for more of their story.

Lance and Scarlet's connection is nothing short of powerful. From the very beginning, it's clear that they are meant for each other despite the odds stacked against them. Both Lance and Scarlett have endured immense pain in their lives, and their secret relationship offers them the solace and love they desperately need.

While this book had some great spice, what stood out to me was the emotional rollercoaster this book took me on. The depth of their connection and challenges are portrayed with intensity, making it impossible not to become deeply invested in their story.

I can’t wait part two of Lance and Scarlet's journey. I have no doubt that part two will mend the heartache left by the cliffhanger. I cannot wait to see the happy ending for these two.

A whole year after that absolute SHOCKER at the end of The Grand Pact we finally get Lance and Scarlet’s story 😭

JC Hawke once again worked tirelessly to write the most perfect story. Lance and Scarlet are so beautiful. Their love is everything you’d ever want for yourself. Getting to see what was going on with them behind the scenes of Grand Lies and Grand Love was the perfect way to kick start this duet.

I’m so glad I was able to savor this book because I never wanted to leave. I want to stay within the pages of their love forever. And this is only part one?! I’m already dying for what comes next!
